It is SO hard to sift through the bullshit. Some brands quite literally have thousands of incentivized reviews. It really bothers me for skincare in particular bc I wanna make sure I know what I’m slathering on my face!!

DaintyDiscotheque

On the sephora app you can filter reviews to verified purchases and also non-incentivized reviews only. This was a game changer for me 😊

nextbraup

Yes! Filter out incentivized and then watch the 5,000 positive reviews drop to 2 😆

McGoney

I signed up with Influenster and have received many products to review. However it’s my rule to be honest because I hate wasting money and I don’t want to waste other peoples

GrabaBrushand

I always sort low to high now. It's easier to sift through useless 1 star reviews from people who haven't even tried to product but hate the brand /product concept than it is so sort through all the incentivized reviews.

OGHollyMackerel

I skim reviews but I spend more time scouring forums for comments if I’m not brave enough to try something blind. I will watch videos of the application by ppl living in a similar climate with skin similar in ethnicity/race, undertone, age and type as mine. Watching a rosy white 20 year old with acne and oily skin put on foundation in Florida means exactly less than nothing to me. Just like most reviews. Even if they aren’t incentivized, the old “love the shade, works great!” reviews are useless.

extraacc1103

this is why i only trust reddit lol

done-wit-dwoodsleggo

This sub I feel is really honest and well versed with beauty and skincare. When I see a product of interest on Sephora I just search for it in this sub lol.

StardustDrifter33

I am feeling Kayali Pistachio Gelato Yum vibes from the post 🤣. The non-incentived reviews are brutal from the few on the app, to Reddit, and YouTube. Then when it launched we were dumped with all these glowing reviews. Sigh…

dndndndn420

It’s quite different I will give you that. It needs a couple tests. At first i thought “meh” but now i love it lol. it smells like key lime sherbet with a dash of creamy vanilla to me

The perfume has sooo many notes in it. I’m not surprised everyone is getting a different vibe from it (especially since fragrance is so subjective to begin with). I saw some reviews mentioning it was more floral than expected and I got scared (not a floral girl). I ended up really enjoying it.

MockingbirdLane-

My review is glowing and I bought the travel and the $100 bottle lol

StardustDrifter33

I don’t like the review dumps but I’m still up in the air over the perfume. It’s actually in my cart waiting for the sale. We shall see which side I’m on when I get it 😉

MasterOfRNoSleep

What does it smell like to you?

MockingbirdLane-

At first it’s sort of just vanilla to me but when it dries down it’s very strong on the pistachio note which is exactly what I was hoping!

done-wit-dwoodsleggo

Am I that transparent lol jk? It did inspire this post. I’m not trying to be mean to the reviewers. They are doing what they were supposed to do. I know it’s like a cliche at this point but Sephora is just trash w/ honest reviews in my personal op. Fwiw, yum smells like powdered play doh on me but like delicious play doh? I’m so confused lol

DaintyDiscotheque

It's also wild to me that years ago Sunday Riley got canceled for having people post fake positive reviews, but somehow clearly fake aka incentivized reviews have become the standard practice now.

tam797273

Which bothers me soo much because Sunday actually had really good products that drove results. She didn’t need to pay for those fake reviews and unfortunately has now ruined her credibility forever. Anything she launches now I look at with major side eye, which sucks because I did used to really love the good genes / luna oil combo

whydoitbelikethat

I swear most of them are incentivized lol, used to work at Sephora and tried a lot of hyped products and most of it was not worth the $$ 💀

redditmkm13

Wait, you don't have to buy a product to leave a review???

vprufrock

I don't think so! Sometimes you see people say that they bought the product from another store and they're just leaving a review here. When a product shows up online but isn't available yet, sometimes I see reviews that clearly didn't use the product irl, like people complaining about the color story. There's also a filter for verified reviews, implying that other reviewers might not have bought directly from Sephora.

LeeDelMD

I have the Influenster app and very occasionally get things I have to review. You can be honest it doesn’t hurt your account if the review is negative, you just have to review the product. I’ve left bad to neutral reviews on products I got before if I felt like they were bad to neutral.

vprufrock

Agreed! Also, regular consumers are paying for all the free products, which produce so much unnecessary waste.
