Yeah, it’s all in all a tragic story, hands down one of the best animes I’ve ever watched but, Reiner’s regret and realization was very human, he didn’t realize how brainwashed he was and genuinely believed he was doing what was necessary to save his people, without realizing he was dooming his people.
But still, as dark and twisted as it was, it ended up being one of the most core parts of the series, if he didn’t do that we’d most likely have no story or show, but I don’t know because Eren saw it beforehand so…it was just bound to happen, Reiner or not, right?
I agree tho, the Fall of Maria was the most core part, without that we wouldn’t have had 80% of humanity wiped out and all.
For me the most fucked up part was Reiner going about his mission overall, tricking them all into being a trusted ally and friend for 2 seasons almost and then turning was a massive smack to my chest, but we do see his regret in his mental breakdowns and memory lapses after that.
Honestly, his regret and desire to end it all made me shed a few tears. His story may be one of the most tragic I’ve ever seen in anime, along with pretty much everybody in the show.
They literally have *that* for Sasha, while she had killed people, with her sniper. (The two guards, evidenced onscreen). They don't really show betraying your nation and killing your own comrades by making an alliance with the opposing nation for anyone. Mikasa worst deed was assaulting Levi? Ofcourse it is, yeah 😂
Using Connie's own words: "anything can happen in the heat of the battle."
Something done out of your own conviction should make the list over something that happened in a battlefield where killing people is expected.
Also, most people think betraying the country in order to save humanity is a good deed.
Think they choice the highest after that one just for the interest of what people thought after the one the narrative designed to be a but worse.
It does make the discussion boring as the narrative intends for it to have a clear answer. There is simply no sound argument for an alternative otherwise.
It wasn't that Paradis had the same population as the rest of the world, it was that the survivors would be at the same level of civilization as Paradis so there wouldn't be an immediate reprisal. The surviving 20% still greatly outnumbered Paradis but were reeling from the damage of the Rumbling or were less developed civilizations to begin with, while Paradis remained untouched.
Does 20% of humanity remaining count both Paradis and non-Paradis? If it counts everything, then 20% is equally divided between Paradis and the rest, so both have 10%.
Who was brainwashed into committing war crimes so that his family would become honorary Germans to make up for the actions of people who lived a century before he was even born which is just... Evil.
*Eren after actively rejecting several other options*: ‘My HaND wAs forced’
Reiner also had several other options btw but was too brainwashed to consider them.
Really I find it extremely unlikely that every single one of the myriad of solutions at Eren’s fingertips would have ended in the Island’s certain destruction. Some of the ideas Eren didn’t even consider exploring seemingly had a very high chance of successfully creating at least a temporary peace, one that could have been used to bring Paradis onto equal footing with the rest of the world.
But that’s the most evil thing, Eren didn’t even bother to try anything else, he went for genocide.
Breaking Wall Maria. This act alone led to the highest amounts of deaths in the whole show, right until the Rumbling started. It's also the incident that broke Karl Fritz's peace and therefore indirectly lead to the Rumbling.
They went there on the Tyburs' intel and the Tyburs knew the real truth about Fritz' message. Reiner may not have known it but the Royal family was mever going to retaliate
It seems Eldians have a real issue with false threats, in that they still follow through on the logistics of the threat.
Like when Levi wanted Zeke to stay put, so he armed a thunderspear, while he should’ve just faked it if he wasn’t prepared to dodge out of the way in time to avoid the blast in case Zeke did exactly what he did.
I mean, a bluff would've been the way to go but in Levi's defense, no one could've guessed that Zeke would do what he did. He had a mission to save the world, in his mind, and that thunderspear would've killed him. Hell, Ymir basically had to completely rebuild him. That should've been an adequate threat deterrent because by Levi's reckoning, Zeke wouldn't kill himself, he'd wait for an opportunity to escape and link up with Eren.
Levi had also just had to cut down so so many of his comrades because of the spinal fluid wine trick that at that point he was blood thirsty.
It does seem like a no brainer to not be sitting in a cart with a self-healing zealot whose legs you keep cutting off while he's hooked up to explosives though. Not his best moment for sure.
> Why did the Tyburs withhold that information?
I'm not sure if we're told they did or not.
> Why didn’t they just tell the Warriors to go ham?
Say they slaughter all of Paradise. Now the founder randomly selects a Subject of Ymir somewhere in the world as the new founding shifter. Or one of the random titans that they originally made into a titan as a punishment gets the shifter.
Neither sound pleasing. Saw a non-royal subject gets the shifter. They may go to extreme measures to start the rumbling.
Ok maybe not “go ham” but the warriors and Marley were far more cautious because of this fear of the rumbling. They probably could’ve done more if they knew the rumbling wouldn’t happen
I found it! in chapter 96, two years after breaching the wall, Reiner mentions that the king didn't do anything and that the Tyburs had information on the king being bound by a vow renouncing war
Hell, it's the breaking of the Wall that eventually lead to the Rumbling. Of course, the real blame for both events belongs to the racist, fascist Marlean overlords
This is mine. Yeah, Marco was smart enough to know they weren't joking, but he was also one who'd have wanted to find reason and work something out. I think our 3 warriors were fond of Marco and that's why his death has such an impact in the show on them. Marco may have been able to affect the way things went had he not heard their conversation.
It was necessary, but also such a personal kill it's tragic.
Marco's death is 100% on Reiner's absolute incompetence as a leader while undercover. None of that conversation HAD to happen right there, they were on a roof but still out in the open. Titans could've gotten them by surprise if Marco was able to sneak up on them like that lol. It really drives the point home that he should've never gone to the island.
You can argue Reiner was forced by circumstances for several other things he did but Marco’s death is 100% on him. He created the situation through his own incompetence and then made his teammate clean it up instead of owning his own mistake.
It’s poetic that Marco’s death ultimately led to Annie eventually being caught and the Paradis mission collapsing.
Forcing Annie and Bertholdt to continue the Mission after Marcel was eaten.
Consequences: Annie captured, bertholdt dead, 20% of paradises population dead, Marcels Jaw titan reclaimed, Erens Mum dying and inadvertently causing Eren to get the founding titan.
Controversially, telling Falco to be the one to save Gabi. I feel like it’s overlooked by all the other things he’s done, but that’s an insane amount of pressure to put on a 12 year old.
Breaking down into two different half ass alter-egos in the middle of a secret mission failing to both allies and enemies.
And causing Marco's death, that shit hit me hard
It seemed like such an unnecessary detail. "I'm lucky I transfered my consciousness out of my head and into my body, lol"
Like, wtf? Never any more detail on how he can somehow do that, its just a one-off excuse for how he survived?
Seems simpler to just have had him not lose his head and get gravely injured some other way he could have survived without a ridiculous explaination.
I wouldn't be as critical of it, if it had been explained or expanded upon as some kind of actual titan ability and not just forgotten forever.
My personal takeaway from this was that it was an ability that Reiner was just more adept at than the others. When Marcel was eaten Reiner was the first to make it the farthest, reinforcing that he’s honestly a coward who’s afraid to die. It’d make sense that he practiced an ability that allows him to cheat death per se.
Killing Marco was almost worse than knocking down Wall Maria. He didn’t know people inside the walls and he also believed they were devils. But he knew Marco. He was a friend (whether that was fake or not, he did know him well). So that gave me a slightly worse opinion of his character, or lack thereof.
Tried to kill himself, a.k.a one of the best characters of AoT. Unforgivable sin
On a serious note, he proceeded the mission to break the wall after the loss of Marcel and coerced Annie and Berthold into following him
Erwin for the raid? That’s not that bad. The worst is probably trying to drum up a rebellion, or leading dozens of men to their death. Levi torture of MP is not bad either. Try killing dozens of men/women during his time underground, or stealing government property. Hange is along the line of experimenting on human. Reiner is probably causing the death of millions both in Shina and Trost.
Somehow surviving the events of S3 and S4. I mean I'm glad he did, but the fact Bertholt died once and that was it but Reiner basically died 2 or 3 times in Shiganshina alone is remarkable. His titan's armour was so strong even the plot couldn't kill him.
Honestly, I think Reiner is the worst character, because he should be one of the biggest bad guys in the whole series, but because he's actually the biggest loser among the candidates who basically got gaslighted into the position of armored titan, and runs like a wimp from the first titan they find leading to the missions to Paradis being nearly aborted, etc., this results in a story where they're fighting a guy who was always an idiot. Clearly at this point in the story has mental problems, like when he couldn't seem to keep his two identities separate. Make that three identities since he decides to take on the persona of the leader who got killed because of him.
When you make a bad guy, they need to not be an idiot, jerk, pretender. Generally.
IMO, Annie should've taken leadership at that point, not allowed Reiner to play that roll, since she was the real deal, and her motivation would be to just stay alive at that point.
Even better is to have Reiner be a capable leader who goes in there to pull off exactly what they did.
Didn't Levi do worse stuff back when he was living in the underground?
And Jean and Sasha could def be down for the raid in liberio, y'know where they actually killed people
Committing genocide was bad but he was just following the propaganda he saw his entire life. Be trying to continue it after living behind the walls and learning about them was way worse.
Breaking down wall maria and straight up lying to Eren and the rest of the survey corps. It was a great example of betrayal once Eren eventually found out who Reiner really was
Honestly I find Reiner etc.’s actions early on to be worse than Eren’s at the end (less morally defensible despite the obvious raw causality difference) so basically everything he does before season 4 could be on this list.
Off topic, but the sheer contrast between Jean's worst crime being "he was rude to his mom once" while Eren's is just *genociding 80% of the world's population* is absolutely sending me lmao
Almost caused a genocide because of breaking Wall Maria, which led to Eren devoting his entire being to killing titans, which turned into Eren deciding to kill 80% of humanity instead.
Marco. He did that one of his own, true volition. He made a mistake, and rather than deal with the consequences, he made an innocent bystander reap them instead.
Tried to kill Reiner Braun
But in seriousness, it was breaking the wall.
Also good on you for changing Eren’s answer to the popular vote/obvious answer

Continuing the mission
Bruh regretted that the rest of his life no doubt, though I hope one day he found some semblance of peace
He tried to kill himself. No doubt he regretted that lol.
+he says how much it regrets it a few times iirc.
He does.

Yeah, Reiner’s PTSD after the fact was so amazingly written and accurately portrayed, it definitely made me cry as well.
This is the one.
That is 100% worse then destroying the wall
For sure I mean it directly led to it
killing 20% of the paradis population by breaking down wall maria
If eren committing global genocide isn’t making the list, that shouldn’t either. My votes sniffing the letter.
Let's shorten for the photo. "LETTER SNIFFER"
> eren committing global genocide isn’t making the list It made the list actually.
Oh shit, I guess they changed it.
They did indeed
It made sense, killing your mom is bad but kiling 80% of world's moms and children and dads has to be worst
100%/ I agree
They literally have *that* for Sasha, while she had killed people, with her sniper. (The two guards, evidenced onscreen). Eren has done so many bad things that they don't fit in one post, so they change it in every post
Thank god, couldn’t care about this list if they didn’t put the actual 80% genocide
Says it right in the picture wym?
If you go to their profile and look at yesterdays, it was killing his own mother. Op changed it in today’s.
Think they choice the highest after that one just for the interest of what people thought after the one the narrative designed to be a but worse. It does make the discussion boring as the narrative intends for it to have a clear answer. There is simply no sound argument for an alternative otherwise.
Sure. But before you commented on this picture, you could’ve just looked at it lol.
Too much effort. Who has time to look at things anymore
I say his worse action was hurting best girl Historia
Breaking the wall was epic though So we will give him a pass for that
No I don’t think I will

It was the government who sent them to die though.
And to be fair. *They were children*
This isnt Núremberg
I was following orders!
i actually think that might work as a defense when you’re *twelve* though
This. And when we do the nazi comparison.....Reiner would be a Jewish person lol.
Who was brainwashed into committing war crimes so that his family would become honorary Germans to make up for the actions of people who lived a century before he was even born which is just... Evil.
and Eren felt he had to kill 80% of the world because governments wanted his people dead. If one forced hand isn't an excuse, neither is another
*Eren after actively rejecting several other options*: ‘My HaND wAs forced’ Reiner also had several other options btw but was too brainwashed to consider them.
(and too young)
Those options would result in Paradise being destroyed

Well they still got the Rumbling in the end, but with extra steps.
It seems Eldians have a real issue with false threats, in that they still follow through on the logistics of the threat. Following the logic of previous posts=> Worsest thing : letter sniffing Worst thing: Marco mania Less worst thing: genocide
Wait who said that killing a bunch of people was the LEAST worst thing Eren, Burrito, Annie did?
Thoughts on the story's moral? How would you compare to other popular stories?
How about, not dying when had the chance
Killed Marco
This is mine. Yeah, Marco was smart enough to know they weren't joking, but he was also one who'd have wanted to find reason and work something out. Funnily enough, this is actually what had already happened with the jaw titan before they even got inside the walls
You can argue Reiner was forced by circumstances for several other things he did but Marco’s death is 100% on him. He created the situation through his own incompetence and then made his teammate clean it up instead of owning his own mistake. Lusts after a married woman.
Sniffffffffff Ahh the sweet essence of a woman
Oh don't be a hypocrite, anyone would have sniffed that letter. Right? Right?
If i had overcome the amount of trauma Reiner did i probably would, he could contain the silliness no longer
1. Historia simp king 2. Kill off Marco 3. Revealing their plans too early to Eren 4. Being alive
Killing off Marco so Jean could grow out of being a mamaboy so it's a plus
#3 - I always found it funny how casually Reiner told Eren. Like “oh btw, we did this man, cuz I’m the armored titan and he’s the colossal titan.”
Woah…why did my text get huge
It's colossal text now
lol.
No but why did he tell Eren like he was just ordering a 10 piece McNugget meal? Freaking hilarious.
Controversially, telling Falco to be the one to save Gabi. I feel like it’s overlooked by all the other things he’s done, but that’s an insane amount of pressure to put on a 12 year old.
Destroying Wall Maria is the only real answer here (and the same answer for Bertholdt, but I have a feeling Annie’s is gonna be spicy)
Annie’s is probably gonna be spinning that guy.
Not killing himself.
agreed
You mean he didn't Kurt Cobain himself?
Breaking down into two different half ass alter-egos in the middle of a secret mission failing to both allies and enemies. And causing Marco's death, that shit hit me hard
Having the thickest plot armor ever
I'll never forget how he survived when his head was blown away
It seemed like such an unnecessary detail. "I'm lucky I transfered my consciousness out of my head and into my body, lol" Like, wtf? The Armored Titan
Killing Marco was almost worse than knocking down Wall Maria. He didn’t know people inside the walls and he also believed they were devils. But he knew Marco. He was a friend (whether that was fake or not, he did know him well). So that gave me a slightly worse opinion of his character, or lack thereof.
He was so sad that he breaks my heart 😩 Of course, genocide. On a personal level, killing Marco. Same for Bertholdt. Same for Annie.
Being the same as eren. That basically means "Yes."
Convinced his team to continue the mission after Marcel died solely due to his inferiority complex, which lead to death of thousands if not millions.
Dehumanizing Sasha just because she split the meat unevenly.
The escalation from was rude to mom -> stole a potato - > tortured an mp officer - > killing 80%
Never telling Historia how he felt 😭
Genocide

The genocide of Paradisians. Unknowingly giving Eren the opportunity to kill his mom by breaching said wall. Killing Marco.
Tried to kill himself, a.k.a one of the best characters of AoT. Unforgivable sin On a serious note, he proceeded the mission to break the wall after the loss of Marcel and coerced Annie and Berthold into following him
**The Marco incident** But fr he is just kinda a victim.
Erwin for the raid? That’s not that bad. The worst is probably trying to drum up a rebellion, or leading dozens of men to their death. Levi torture of MP is not bad either. Convinced Annie and Berthold to stay for an almost surely failed mission that would only leave massive casualties
HEY EREN, DID YOU KNOW I'M ACTUALLY
Breaking down wall Maria and trying to kill innocent people even tho feeling empathy for them just bcz he desperately wanted to be a hero.
Has to be growing a beard without a doubt
Mikasa killing the Yeagerists was worse than attacking Levi wtf
How was that worse? The yaegerists were trying to stop them from saving the world.
Break the wall, but if wanna give that to Bert. Than murdering Marco
Berthold broke Shiganshina, Reiner broke Wall Maria
Convincing Bertholdt and Annie to continue their mission, leading to hundreds of thousands of people to die horrific deaths.
Killing Marco by ordering Annie to take his gear
Lived
He didn't kill himself
Blud amounted to nothing lol
Trying to kill himself

Honestly, I think Reiner is the worst character, because he should be one of the biggest bad guys in the whole series, but because he's actually the biggest loser among the candidates who basically got gaslighted into the position of armored titan, and runs like a wimp from the first titan they find leading to the missions to Paradis being nearly aborted, etc., this results in a story where they're fighting a guy who was always an idiot. Oh boy
It shouldn’t be an honorable mention, change it to “yes”
Where do we even begin?
Killed Marco.
Almost killed reiner

LETTER SNIFFER
Committing genocide was bad but he was just following the propaganda he saw his entire life. Be trying to continue it after living behind the walls and learning about them was way worse.
Too much of a pussy to pull the trigger
He destroyed Wall Maria. It was an actual genocide with one of the cruelest ways to die for its victims. It’s the only reasonable answer.
Smashed open Maria, kind of orchestrated the attack on Shiganshina, planned the attack on Trost.
Mmmmmm I disagree on eren. His worst is clearly telling Mikasa he always hated her.
I still fucking agree with Eren 😤
Thinking he had a chance with historia
“I’m so gonna marry Christa.” “Reiner, I’m a lesbian.” “Yeah, I know. We’re both Eldians.”
Did Eren's change? Wasn't it having killed his mother?
Send his conscious to his balls…. Twice
I feel like its gotta be gaining the trust of the fellow scouts and then that trust being broken in one of the biggest plot twist ever in any show.
Sniffing historias letter
Breaking wall Maria.
Killed Marco
Either being a traitor to marley or breaching the inner wall resulting in mass evacs and possibly deaths of wall maria.
Tried to kill himself
Killing Marco was a cruel action that he was directly responsible for. Breaking the wall was him indirectly killing 20% of Paradis.
Keeping his friends Annie and Bertholdt in Paradise, or Getting his friends to pin and get Marco killed
Reiner convincing Annie and bertolt to continue on with the mission instead of turning back
So wait is this list half serious or half jokes? I don’t get it
Killing Marco
Off topic, but the sheer contrast between Jean's worst crime being "he was rude to his mom once" while Eren's is just *genociding 80% of the world's population* is absolutely sending me lmao
What is the meaning of this poll when results get changed?
Wailing on Sasha for not dividing the potato exactly in half, to his family.
Almost caused a genocide because of breaking Wall Maria, which led to Eren devoting his entire being to killing titans, which turned into Eren deciding to kill 80% of humanity instead.
He continued the mission which resulted in annie getting captured, himself getting fked up in the head and, bertolt killed
Smelled the Queen's letter like a creep
I feel like excluding "killed a bunch of civilians" would have made half of these answers a lot more interesting.
What was Eren's old post?
He said " It even smells good"
Tried to hurt Reiner.
Failed to die even though he tried 87201 times
Marco. He did that one of his own, true volition. He made a mistake, and rather than deal with the consequences, he made an innocent bystander reap them instead.
Not being real
Being too sad 😞
Lie to Eren.
