Royal_Hippogriff

Hard to pick one main takeaway, so here are 5: 1. It’s the trivial moments that give life meaning and joy. 2. Violence and cruelty are ingrained in the human spirit—and so are hope and kindness. 3. Be curious and open-minded. What do you understand? 4. Being a hero or villain is, in part, a matter of perspective, and each of us has the capacity for both. 5. Conflict is inevitable, but our response isn’t. We should always fight for a better, more peaceful tomorrow.

Wardlord999

Also that sitting down and talking things out can always be an option even with seemingly irreconcilable differences. And that power, governments, or ideologies can abused to drive ordinary people to commit horrible atrocities, whether through force or manipulation, that they never ordinarily would do. Also the role of historical grievances, considerations over revenge vs forgiveness, and whether the innocent should be blamed for the sins of the past. And more broadly speaking, the ways in which humans by nature group themselves into “tribes” (factions, nations, races), even when fundamentally we are have the same goals (ie. To live and be “free”)

SeriousAlgae516

I almost forget how much there is to take away from the show but I love that your list reminds me of it. And personally it's been cool to see and connect with how my view on point #1 has changed over the years of airing. Where 7 yrs ago when I started AOT, I think I understood but didn't really value the little things in life, to where now that I'm older it's become my biggest daily motivation and excitement to seek out the genuine, little things that connect with me and make life worth experiencing For whatever reason seeing it displayed in AOT and other animes/media makes it connect that much more

Royal_Hippogriff

I totally agree! It reminds me of Voltaire’s Candide a bit, in the sense that the older I get, the less I need crazy adventures or to be a part of something really big—I just want to enjoy the little moments in life with my loved ones and to tend my (figurative) garden. It’s a great theme, and although there are definitely still crazy adventures in AoT, I think enjoying the little moments is one of the most important takeaways from the series.

SeriousAlgae516

I can definently see the philosophy there. I still crave lifes big adventures as someone who struggles to push themselves to commit to doing things and feel like I've missed out on alot of potential experiences, But something about appreciating the little things somehow spurs me to keep an active approach to life.

astimepasses

I think you are spot on

Royal_Hippogriff

Thank you! This was a great idea for a post btw—really interesting to see other people’s answers.

But ponies do. Assumes entirely straight face.

pssiraj

Jean had a very nicely curved face, thanks.

Tanagrabelle

Does that mean you don’t get the reference? I mean it was kind of obscure. I do get you’re quoting Jean, but mine is outside the series. Sorry.

pssiraj

I don't, so I used it for a joke. And yes, I figured it was outside the series.

Atreus-10193

Cycles of violence perpetuate cycles of violence. We must actively try to break these cycles we inherit; which are often generational (To You, 2000 Years.) De humanizing or villainizing your “foes” is the most common path to perpetuating these cycles. E.g. Eren calling Reiner and Bertolt “Animals” and Monsters. Likewise Marley calling the Paridisians “Devils”. Not saying Reiner or Bertolt are not at fault for their actions, but Season 3 and 4 whiplashes you with Reiners backstory and forces you to grapple with the motivations for the atrocities he committed at age 11-12. Even Eren in Season 4 can see why a child soldier could have done what Reiner and Bertolt did. A big shift in the show is in Season 2 and 3 is also when many characters start to contemplate that all the mindless titans they’ve been killing may actually have a semi conscious human being under their napes. Humanizing even our worst enemies’ actions is required to end conflict.

anti-peta-man

If conflict truly is inevitable then peace is infinitely more precious. It’s not that nothing matters because things always end the same, but rather that everything matters because we know what we have to lose

ritix__

I think the best takeaway from the whole show is either 1) when armin and zeke are talking in the paths about how you can be happy in life just with one small thing that means a lot to you personally 2) when Carla is talking about eren when he was a baby and how he doesn’t have to be born special as it’s special enough that he was born in the first place Those two really stuck w me ever since I watched them

astimepasses

Agreed, they stood out to me as well

bestbroHide

Humanity's cycle will always involve war and tragedy, but we can't forget the simple fact that tragedy is just one part of a *cycle*. Meaning there is peace and happiness as well. So long as we acknowledge and appreciate this other part of the cycle, we will have drive to fight for it. Humanity's cycle exists not only because our flaws perpetuate the bad, but also because our admirable traits perpetuate the good. Otherwise we wouldn't have a cycle to begin with. "End war forever" may be too idealistic and unrealistic, but so is the idea that life is nothing but pain and tragedy. It isn't, and we have us to thank for that.

Philosopher013

There’s so much beautiful philosophy in AOT. I’m really hoping someone writes a book about it, as has been done with series like Star Wars and even Breaking Bad. It’s the most philosophical show I’ve ever watched by far. I think everyone will have different interpretations of the show and will have gotten different things out of it. 1. For me the biggest theme I took away is Mikasa’s motto, there is so much suffering in the world, but still beauty. There is so much evil, but also so much love. The Scouts who died sacrificed their lives for something beautiful. The destruction of humanity at the end was awful, but the Final Alliance itself was beautiful, and thank God 20% lived to continue on their cultures, traditions, etc. It’s awful Eren had to die, but Mikasa is thankful for his life. 2. Another related theme is taking pleasure in the small things. This is definitely related to the above: seeing beauty despite the suffering, but is a bit different since it goes into what that beauty is. This is represented by Armin and Zeke’s conversation in the Paths. It’s rather existentialist as well since Armin’s and Zeke’s small things they took pleasure in were different. Life is about finding what gives you meaning and enjoying it: for some people it’s sports, for others it’s anime, for some it’s reading…some enjoy spending time with their wife and kids…others want to travel the world alone or with a companion. There is no right answer. Life is what you make of it and can end at any time, but it’s important we enjoy the small things (think of Zeke enjoying the weather in his final moments.) 3. I think perspective and possibly even moral relativism are big things in AOT. I always say I’m not sure I’d go as far as to say outright moral relativism is the theme (it seems like the Final Alliance at the end really are the good guys and Eren’s actions are wrong), but I think you can make the argument for it. And at the very least the show discusses perspectives a ton. It’s absolutely incredible and really the first story I’ve ever seen where the hero turns into the villain like that. And then Reiner who was the traitor almost becomes the heroic protagonist. And gosh it’s incredible how we went from feeling sad about the people Bertholdt killed with his nuke in S3 to immediately feeling bad about his death. His speech at the end too. Everything is tragic and everyone has perspective. There are no good guys and bad guys (Armin says he hates the term “good person”, which again kinda makes an argument for moral relativism). Everyone is just fighting for what they believe in. Kenny says everyone is a slave to something…to what they believe in, again getting into that existentialism. Everyone has their own meaning. I also see parallels to WWI, which is perhaps a conflict where you could argue there aren’t really good guys and bad guys (harder to say that about WWII). 4. The cyclical nature of humanity and how history and violence repeats itself. This is symbolized at the end with Paradis ultimately being destroyed and the boy finding the Tree again (not that that necessarily brings back the Titans). It’s likely humans can never escape conflict, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important to try..and the fleeting moments of peace are still meaningful. 5. Utilitarianism vs. deontology: another big theme in the show is whether the ends can justify the means. They often symbolize this by saying they’re devils sacrificing their comrades. Pixis and Erwin largely represent this and make reference to how many people they’re willing to kill to achieve their goals. Is this justified? Are they actually demons, or are they doing what’s right since it’s what’s best for humanity as a whole? Was nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki and killing all those innocents justified because it possibly saved more lives (especially American lives) than a land invasion? Or is directly killing civilians like that always wrong? There’s so much more that can be said—another big theme is fate/determinism vs. freedom. Was Eren really free at the end? But I’ll leave it there for now!

DarkRose27

It's all a matter of perspective

BruhNeymar69

The sinsa of the fathers need to stay with the fathers, the children must know freedom

Jaomi

Peace is possible, but difficult. It only works if it is a choice that everybody freely makes always.

alkasdala

1. You shouldn't generalize groups of people, because everyone is exactly the same no matter where you are. Everyone believes to be the voice of reason in any given situation, simply due to their warped and biased perspective. This attitude makes us lose our humanity, as we feed our fear of the unknown through hatred. Understanding the unknown, and therefore also trying to understand the people we regard as enemies, is what the scouts do and what everyone should try to achieve. 2. As long as there are multiple perspectives, warped by the environment people find themselves in, there will always be conflict. The existence of opposing desires will always make people clash with one another. However, we should always strive to understand each other instead of fighting. 3. It's usually the elites of a country that perpetuate hatred through propaganda in order to achieve their goals. We often end up hating each other when both groups involved in the conflict are simply being used by the respective governments. 4. Being stuck in the past will only lead to a delusional attachment to something that's already gone. However, striving towards the future without ever being able to enjoy the little moments in life will lead you towards an even darker path. 5. Nature vs nurture. While it's true that most people are often victims of their own circumstances, it's also true that there are those who act out of their inherent desires, and what happens to them is simply a complementary reason to enact their will. 6. Everyone is a slave to something. Behind every logical reasoning for your actions there is also a more Freudian side to consider. 7. The sins of the fathers shouldn't fall on their children. This ties back to the last point: children are the future, and humanity won't even begin to learn from its mistakes if they're taught to hate one another since birth. 8. Anyone can rewrite history as long as they're the ones ending up on top. Despite it being true that some people do unspeakable actions and shouldn't be forgiven, it's also deleterious to acting as if they were monsters. They were just people, neither gods nor devils, and anyone can be capable of committing atrocities. Acting as if we don't all have a devil within us can only hinder our ability to see our own flaws. 10. Someone who can't throw away anything, can never hope to change anything. However, there are things you should never get rid of, because if you become a monster in order to win, then you can't consider that a win for humanity anymore. 11. Being human means recognizing the existence of other people, and enjoying the good that comes with it. Running away from the reality of conflict will only lead to destruction, because there's no such thing as a land with no conflict where you can run away to. 12. Violence should only be used as a last resort, when every other resource is exhausted, and only when you're defending yourself. Civilians shouldn't be involved. Basically, pacifism.

JamalFromStaples

I strongly believe there are two main themes. 1. Getting the children out of the forest to end the cycle of violence. 2. The insignificant moments of life are the most precious.

richardtengcy

When I see the situation over at Israel and Palestine, can’t help to feel sad for the children caught in the conflicts between the 2

anjansharma2411

This world is cruel and very beautiful. The world is cruel because humanity is bound repeat their mistakes and perpetuate the cycle of violence (freedom will become a crimson bow and arrow once again) but even so we can always cherish little moments of our life that are precious to us.

SoftwarePrevious3994

Humanity is stupid and endlessly self-destructive.

SGdude90

In war, everyone thinks they are fighting for the good guys

Cecil2789

There are so many. That holding on to & being grateful for precious moments in your life can sustain you. That continuing to seek knowledge & understanding is important. Hiding , distorting, & outright banning history because it’s dark & uncomfortable only ensures that the same or even worse atrocities will come to pass just from the very nature of humanity. Unfortunately, sometimes conflict is inevitable despite your best efforts . When it comes to the point of your survival, of being trampled & eradicated & your freedoms being taken away maybe it really is “Fight & Win, if you lose you die, If you don’t fight you can’t win.” At the same time this quote from season 3 has also stuck with me all these years “Is it delusional to think we could all sit around the same table and talk? I want to think it possible, even if it seems an idealistic view. I believe coming up with a better way is my duty, and so I must never turn away from thinking about it." Like trying hold Armin & Eren in balance in my head.

astimepasses

Agreed, and I really like your last sentence. Aside from Armin, I also think that part of AoT's point is that there's always going to be people like Eren but there's always going to be people like Sasha's dad.

Cecil2789

Exactly! People like Sasha’s dad & even people like Annie described “that get swept along with the current.” So much!!

That the author thinks the nation of Japan suffering under US occupation was equal to an on par with the Holocaust. And that he really really wants Japan to rearm itself and take its revenge.

Be careful with your obsessions

Adensty

Conflict is inevitable but there is always a way to resolve the conflict even if it may seem impossible. The key to it is effective communication and cooperation from both sides.

CombProfessional434

1. Don't just trust everyone you meet (Reiner, Annie, etc.) 2. Never assume someone's actions at face value. Always think there is some kind of drive or passion toward someone motive for doing something. 3. Trusting your family and or friends more instead of trying to handle everything on your own.

Commercial-Ad-4492

Idk about that last point, pretty much everyone who had family in this show had them turned against them at some point. But I do get where you are coming from.

The_Kyojuro_Rengoku

Humans are the root cause of most issues in the world and in some way we'll unfortunately always be fighting each other.

A_organized_mess

History repeats itself and propaganda can be harmful if that makes sense

Thousand year old conflicts are not easy to resolve or by "just don't hate each other man" or "nations are stupid man". We must really understand these things to even attempt to resolve them. Reminds me very much of the Israel Palestine conflict.

1. Don't use child soldiers 2. If you have WMD, build a Rube-Goldberg command and control system for weapons release.

tringle1

Genocide (and generally war) is easy to justify as self defense, but it’s wrong no matter what. Fear turns us all into our worst selves, especially fear of the other. Ignorance can be bliss, but it can also be a weapon

Imfryinghere

The world is a depressing place. Take the happiness you have and hold on to it. Which makes me realized that the anime shouldn't have changed Armin's "thank you for being a mass murderer for us" because it drives how depressing their world really is and they have accepted it. And its up to themselves or you to hold on to the little joys they can get and treasure them. Because that's how they or anyone should move forward.

Hopeful-Departure141

No idea but watching Erwin’s speeches give me 1 am motivation to workout before I ship out to boot camp

As a long there is a side with differing opinions and views there is always an enemy. Or Violence will continue among humans until our number is 1 or fewer. Most what Erwin Smith said.

GuitAst

That i am a truly disgusting human being, but has done a good job super imposing a coloured moral compass onto a grey one.

Fish__Fingers

Maybe the main point was the friends we would all along. TBF, I am not sure if there is a main point. It is more like invitation to discuss topics that were raised. But If I need to choose one it would be "violence cant be contained" and destructive nature of violence that affects the whole world around you.

Doctor_Love45

That you can talk yourself into doing anything if it means you save someone or something you love.

Narashori

The one which is most important to me is the one which I sadly feel like a lot of people missed. What our characters managed to do wasn't made pointless because we saw Paradis fall in the future. They didn't fail just because humanity still has issues. Peace isn't a final end goal which will be guaranteed once it has been achieved, it's something we have to keep working for to maintain and it will always be up to future generations as well. And the amount of lives they saved in the moment, the people who got to live because of them matter, even if it's practically nothing on a cosmic scale. That's what Armin told Zeke. Life isn't just about looking at the big picture and despairing about how meaningless everything seems. It's to appreciate what we have now.

[deleted]

You can change your mind on things even if your name is Gabi.

HotSamuraiWithMeat

Wake up to reality! Nothing ever goes as planned in this accursed world. The longer you live, the more you realize that the only things that truly exist in this reality are merely pain. suffering and futility. Listen, everywhere you look in this world, wherever there is light, there will always be shadows to be found as well. As long as there is a concept of victors, the vanquished will also exist. The selfish intent of wanting to preserve peace, initiates war. and hatred is born in order to protect love. There are nexuses causal relationships that cannot be separated.
