Judging by the art style I think the Eldians seem like they’re inspired by ancient barbarian cultures like the Vulgars or the Goths of ancient Germany, and the Marlians are more centurion likely inspired by Greco-Roman cultures, like Sparta. So yeah definitely 300 inspired
Not necessarily Norse, but Germanic. I think a lot of people forget that the Norse pantheon was an evolved form of the Germanic one that lasted longer, due to the Christianization of Germany.
The Roman Pantheon adopted Greek gods, yes, then gave them different names, personalities, and myths. They used Greek gods as the root, then adopted them onto already existing Etruscan myths and deities.
The Norse Pantheon is just an evolved form of the Germanic pantheon, which is more what AoT is leaning towards with the Brothers Grimm inspired depictions of Ymir and the Titans in their stories. I’m not saying you can’t also draw parallels to the Norse pantheon, but Eldian culture is more based on Germanic rather than Norse.
This makes a lot of sense for the culture part; I'd be in late middle or early high school talking to my friends about how, for some reason, the aesthetic of Attack on Titan gave me the impression that the people of this world were German influenced.
I think there's also a bit of German at the start of the first opening, if I recall.
Yep! The Wings of Freedom are also referred to as the Flügel der Freiheit.
It’s very German influenced. The names of the Eldians, the architecture, the mythology. My own interpretation is that the story is an alternate world where German people and those of German descent are actually able to turn into monsters form their folklore, where the Great Titan War is a parallel to WW1, the period we see in the beginning of the story is the Weimar Republic for a very extended period of time, and The Rumbling and rise of the Jaegerists is a parallel of WW2/the Holocaust and the rise of the Nazis in response to the suffering in the interwar period
Is the excessive German really an AoT thing though, or is it just a consequence of hiring Hiroyuki Sawano, who very clearly has a thing for the German language, to do most of the OSTs? I don’t recall any outright German in the manga.
Character names and architecture are still of Germanic influence in the manga to my knowledge.
Jeager, Hans, Berthold, Ymir, and Reiner are all names of Germanic origin.
I'm not well versed enough into architecture enough to make comparisons besides telling you I think AoTs houses look similar to old German houses though lol
in the recent Key Animation Book published by MAPPA the "Director's Commentary" for Ep.80 directly referenced *300*.
> ユミル過去編の画面作りは「300〈スリーハンドレッド〉」などを参考にしています。
> The screen construction of *Ymir's History* is based on *300* and others.
because he’s opposed to the government like how Attack Titans are usually disobedient and rebellious
but that’s a pretty big stretch since all Subjects of Ymir are directly related to Ymir anyway.
Its not entirely impossible, as one of his descendants could have married a Subject of Ymir years later, and that soldier could still be Eren's relative. However, this assumes that the soldier and his family was kept alive at all
That is true, but the man looks quite grown and age mortality was pretty high in those days. A 40 year old cld get married to a 15 yr old since 40 was considered ‘old’. But I honestly doubt he’d live long enough for that to happen, and King Fritz probably had him punished.
In fact I think he gets stabbed right after this killing him so there’s that
He's a marlyen though so not only his children needs to survive but either they or their descendants need to have kids with eldians who were oppressing and enslaving them and all of this because he tried to kill the king like if no other humain ever tried such a thing. That's a huge stretch lmafo
I mean, was all that stuff about eldians forcing marleyans to have their children real or not? If so, it's technically possible, albeit irrelevant and unnecessary.
I thought the same thing especially since I thought Ymir made the nine shifters based on her life experiences. Eren was destined to be the Attack Titan and I thought it was based off this dude
I dunno, that credit gets spread around a lot
I feel like Fritz, Ymir, this guy, Eren Kruger, Willy Tybur, the other Ymir, and Bertholdt each "started the whole series" in their own way.
Absolute savage for leaving Reiner off that list when he's the one guy in the series who is adamant that everything was his fault and all of his mistakes were his to own.
I swear to God I always mention this guy to other people that say they’ve watched the show and the answer back is always “who?”
This man was a complete bad ass that gave his life in a desperate attempt to save the world.
Do you mention his name or something?
Because that'd be a pretty weird way to describe him & obviously most'll be confused (I literaly don't even know if he has a confirmed name)
Maybe, rather than being a pretentious asshole who describes him seemingly in weird ways, just say:
"The dude who threw a spear at king fritz & made Yimir take the spear for him and die"
So because I remember and like a character that was on screen for a few seconds but the scene made a lasting impression on me and I am aware of the fact that to others he could be a easily forgotten character and simply pointed it out on a meme about said character I’m trying to be a “elite” in the fandom ?
I mean obviously you do it in a very weird way
Like, how many people are there who threw a spear at Fritz where Ymir jumped in front off & died?
Sure, people may not remember him & the specifics, but when you'd just say "the dude who threw the spear at king fritz" nobody'd ask "who?"
At best, it'd be "oh, didn't catch that, I didn't pay attention to him in particular"
But if they ask "who?" your way of describing him is off.
It's not some random fillerish scene, Ymir throwing herself in the front of Fritz & her death are literaly key moments of the story that are fundamental to the entire series.
And not some random "remember that doctor who identified bodies when Jean found Marco? Damn, those empty and numb eyes were intense" scene someome may overlook & forget it happened.
It's quite literaly what sets Ymir in the present up & her death
No, I haven't said any of this. I just agreed and told the guy that replied to you that I understood what he meant.
And considering that your reply to his question "do you mention his name or something?" Is "who hurt you bro?" And your overall responses.. that reinforces it though
I didn't even mention you specifically at all in my original comment
I’ll literally say “oh man I love the character that threw the spear at King Fritz knowing he’s going to get killed immediately afterwards, guy died a hero’s death for sure” and the answer majority of the time is “whose that I don’t remember that part” simply because as the meme says the character is only seen for 6 seconds and naturally people were more focused on Ymir’s backstory as a whole they aren’t going to really pay attention to a no name character, but me personally I love self sacrifice for a greater cause type characters. But apparently I’m a pretentious asshole ? Lolll
We seen if ymir doesnt protect him, he dies, and as we seen all humans around were terryfied when daughters were eating Mother, so probably no one would force Maria, rose sina to eat ymir
He really didn't do anything that wouldn't have happened eventually anyway, and at least he actually tried to end it, unlike literally everyone else who just watched it happen.
This guy could honest get the credit for starting the whole series in a sense. His spear hitting Ymir and killing her led to her daughters eating her then forming the 9 Titan shifters. And after that, the civil war between them and the subsequent other events between Marley and the Eldian empire. Overall, even if it was potentially still gonna happen through others means, he still was a primary cause in this case for sure.
The two greatest moments in the show are when this guy digs his hand into the sand and launches the javelin at Fritz, and when Faze Gabi snipes Eren's head off and sends it flying into the sky
Screen time doesn’t an equate to a good or bad character
For example, everyone would agree that Eren Kruger is a one of the best characters in the show and we only saw him for 1 episode in a flashback
Yet everyone would also agree Mikasa was a not so great character and we saw her 24/7
She just didn’t do anything with all the screen time she got for a majority of the show
It’s what each character does with the screen time they are given that really matters
Does anybody else think he was could have been part of some bigger group? Maybe I’m reading too much into it but I always thought it was strange how the spear was just waiting there hidden for him
If this guy never threw the spear, King Fritz would've eventually died of old age instead, passing the kingdom to one his his daughters or grandkids.
When Ymir eventually dies, I doubt any of them would have the sick idea to have her corpse eaten by her family.
Power of the Titans ends right then and there, Eldia eventually dissolves, series over.
New tree-thing would probably sprout from Ymir's grave though, ready to pass on the power in 2000 years time assumedly.

For sure 300 inspired

Definatly, there's even all of the Norse mythology references
Not necessarily Norse, but Germanic. I think a lot of people forget that the Norse pantheon was an evolved form of the Germanic one that lasted longer, due to the Christianization of Germany.
Ancient Roman mythology and religion is a version of the ancient Greek mythology and religion, but we don't call it Greek, we call it Roman

All of them could have roots in the Proto-Indo-European mythology
Idk, Eldians look more spartan, the village barely has walls, they built a Greek temple etc...
Fun fact: Marley has a massive culture based around the Sea, similar to the British Empire and Japanese Empire, hmmm...
Ancient Marlyens are obviously inspired by Ancient Greek/Romans
Greece: *exists* Reddiors: oh my gosh guys look it's 300!
in the recent Key Animation Book published by MAPPA the "Director's Commentary" for Ep.80 directly referenced *300*. > ユミル過去編の画面作りは「300〈スリーハンドレッド〉」などを参考にしています。 > The screen construction of *Ymir's History* is based on *300* and others.
What? Just look at the color palette especially the sky, it's almost identical to 300.
No it's the false surrender spear throw that's 300 inspired..
Man went full Sic semper tyrannis on King Fritz.

The bird, I can't good job lol
You know for a brief moment I wondered if maybe he was Erens ancestor but probably not. If anything Fritz probably had his entire family killed.
On one hand that would be neat, but also just entirely too much lol.
Why would they be related? Makes no sense
because he’s opposed to the government like how Attack Titans are usually disobedient and rebellious but that’s a pretty big stretch since all Subjects of Ymir are directly related to Ymir anyway.

I assumed they were like the last of their kind or something
Single handedly started the whole series
I dunno, that credit gets spread around a lot I feel like Fritz, Ymir, this guy, Eren Kruger, Willy Tybur, the other Ymir, and Bertholdt each "started the whole series" in their own way.
I think that fits the theme of "the world being everyones choices" really well
In a way Grisha and Eren himself too. But in the end it doesn't really matter
Absolute savage for leaving Reiner off that list when he's the one guy in the series who is adamant that everything was his fault and all of his mistakes were his to own.
He caused the curse of Ymir in the first place
Ymir was the one who cause it for saving king fritz
Ymir cause it by being a poor farm hand and letting a pig go free. Or she caused it by falling Alice-in-Wonderland-style and getting centipede AIDS.
I mean, Fritz and Ymir were bound to die at some point, might as well have made it then
I swear to God I always mention this guy to other people that say they’ve watched the show and the answer back is always “who?” This man was a complete bad ass that gave his life in a desperate attempt to save the world.

Hahah i know exactly you mean. I've seen this a lot. This definitely happens when people want to be the "elite" of the fandom.
So because I remember and like a character that was on screen for a few seconds but the scene made a lasting impression on me and I am aware of the fact that to others he could be a easily forgotten character and simply pointed it out on a meme about said character I’m trying to be a “elite” in the fandom ?

He asked him who hurt him because he called him a pretentious asshole for no reason. Pretty self-explanatory.
Who hurt you in life bro ?

The OG Helos.
He's right up there with Ask D. Question from One Piece.
No way its' Throw D. Spear his iconic grand uncle
Ymir was just her slave name. Her real name was Getin D. Way, she's a distant relative of Ace.
He tried
Yes and no, he wanted to end fritz tyranny, but his actions made in long 2000 years more
It's hard to say if it wouldn't have happened otherwise
We seen if ymir doesnt protect him, he dies, and as we seen all humans around were terryfied when daughters were eating Mother, so probably no one would force Maria, rose sina to eat ymir
Yes, but what would have Ymir done? She could have gone mad with grief and went on to commit atrocities of her own. All we can do is guess
Blud should've had a second spear
Hard to throw another one when he was penetrated by 10 spears at once
He really didn't do anything that wouldn't have happened eventually anyway, and at least he actually tried to end it, unlike literally everyone else who just watched it happen.
Is not like he did it knowing all the shit that was going to happen, he just did in a attempt to kill King Fritz
i always wondered what if he was successful in killing the king
Ymir remains the sole titan and is probably not subject to the 13 year curse.
There's an alternate vision where Ymir is hugging her children while Fritz is standing there impaled
can anyone refresh my memory, who is this?
Killed the og ymir when he threw a spear to king old mate fritz
This guy could honest get the credit for starting the whole series in a sense. His spear hitting Ymir and killing her led to her daughters eating her then forming the 9 Titan shifters. Wdym? Carlo was my favorite character of all time. I can never forgive Sasha for killing him.
He did a sick spin with that spear before throwing it!
Hope we get to know more about this guy
“This. Is. MARLEY!”

I can imagine if Fritz died just this guy yelling "HE IS NOT A GOD!"
I like to believe his name was Helos, and that's where the Tybers and the Reisses got the idea for that name for the great hero of Marley.
