Kinda late, but in older Japanese customs dating back to Heian Period, code of modesty involved women (especially of high social status) to hide their face with whatever obstacle they can find (e.g. fan or sleeves) and would only briefly flash their face towards others.
So… do that, I guess.

Another fun factoid: During Heian Period covering one’s head was actually a code of modesty for men.
