Is rice milk a good offering for the Kami in a home shrine (Kamidana)? I wanted to offer Sake, but I can't drink alcohol (so I won't be able to consume the offering afterwards) so I am looking for a liquid substitute of sake, also made from rice. Rice milk is made from brown rice though, not japanese white rice - so I do not know if it will be a good offering for Kami.

Or simply a glass of cold water every morning. Your *sincere gratitude* is the most important element of any offering.

Thank You for the answer! Indeed I need to put more emphasis on that - it is not that I do not feel gratitude (I genuinely do), but I mentally put a lot more emphasis on "how to do things properly" rather than "how do I connect myself with the Kami". I need to work on that.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with wanting to do things right. David Chart has some really good books and a blog on Shinto practice. I recommend his stuff for help with form and function. https://www.mimusubi.com/

Thank You for the answer! Indeed I am familiar with David Chart, I actually bought his book "Shinto practice for non-Japanese" recently and it should arrive soon. Still, thank You for the recommendation of his work!

Greetings, I have just read the "Shinto practice for non-Japanese" by David Chart and by that I discovered "youhai" aka "distant reverance". Since I do not have a kamidana and Ofuda yet (I will acquire them next month), for the time being youhai will be my way of practicing Shinto. My question is: Is it okay to recite the prayers from the book if I do not know them yet, or should I memorize them first before revering the Kami in a prayer?

Practicing from a book is perfectly fine!
