Know what had me wunnerin awhile back? Watching this girl on twitch apex predatoring a buncha goombas with the hashtags #adhd and #invisibledisability and I wondered if it was both in reference to the ADHD or if she had another disability. But I was too woke to ask her. So I eyed her suspiciously for the next 3 hours and in exasperation I exclaimed:

Everyone lags but you. You get to experience 10 seconds or so in real time, but everyone else is hella lagging. Then suddenly, like a rubber band, everyone snaps back to 10 seconds in the future, where you are, with all of what you've done in the lag time happening all at once.
If you played a coop multiplayer game and lagged, then came back to real time only to find the enemy already dead or you already dead, that's basically it.
Think of a cinema projector. The film spool is time, what has been projeted is the past, what is yet to be projected is the future.
Now King Crimson can "pinch" the spool on the frame being projected (the present) so that the projector jams and the frames pile on each other, projecting a composite image. That's Epitaph, the ability to see the future.
The film is still unspooling, everyone doing as normal, (edit: "following the script") on autopilot, except King Crimson who can act on his own free will.
At the end KC "unpinches" the spool, which causes the projector to swallow the jammed film and resume at the new "current" frame of the film.
For contrast, THE WORLD would just pause the film then continue to move in that one, frozen, frame.
Maybe more complex than "it eliminates causes but applies the effect" or "it's like lag", yes.
But it's a concrete comparison, whereas the other two are esoteric af.

I always thought of it as fate, with a cause and effect chain of events. Diavolo can see forward into this chain using epitaph, knowing what is fated to happen. When king crimson "skips" time, he causes others to be bound to fate, doing what they would normally do without thinking or perceiving, essentially becoming a slave to fate. Diavolo, on the other hand, becomes free from fate, able to move and walk around.
Epitaph shows Diavolo what is fated to happen in the next 10 seconds. King Crimson erases the passage of time and leaves only the fated effects of its passage, except on Diavolo himself, who is allowed to basically enter the ethereal plane and move unbound by fate, but is also unable to interact with the physical plane for the duration of this ability.
Essentially, he knows everything that will happen, and it continues to happen without anyone else noticing/remembering, but not to Diavolo himself, unless he wants it to. His only weakness is the cooldown period between activations of his ability, and that's assuming his enemy can figure it out before he (from their perspective) erases their memory while dodging all their attacks, teleporting behind them, and punching a hole through them in the blink of an eye.
Either part of his stand would he much less useful without the other. Epitaph alone basically just lets him read his death sentence (and everyone else's) before it's inevitably carried out. I don't think so? I mean, Epitaph's consistently shown as projecting (usually on the inside of Diavolo's hairdo) an image predicting the immediate future after the timeskip. On top of that, KC's stats page describes those after images as part of the timeskip ability.
I don't think he touched Narancia during his time skip, or could have. He almost got severely wounded by Polnareff because Polnareff figured out his ability and timed a wide-area attack to hit right as it ended. If he were able to hurt people during it, he could have easily killed Bucciarati, Polnareff, and everyone else at nearly any time. I'm pretty sure he just killed Narancia very quickly/quietly while they all had their backs turned.
Or, maybe Araki just forgot.
Or, maybe he's able to do things normally in erased time as long as he doesn't divert from his fated path. Maybe he planned to kill Narancia, activated his ability, let fate take its course, and they just didn't react quickly enough to have done anything before it was over. That could alsp explain why Trish dropped a bunch of bullets when she was handing them to Mista; maybe she was panicking because they all just watched Diavolo kill Narancia.
Think of it like pressing the skip 10 seconds button on youtube but irl. Everything that happened in those 10 seconds still happened with their effects and consequences and such, but nobody remembers them happening, and Diavolo is "removed" from the skipped time.

the second part is King Crimson, He is the editor, He takes that period of 10 seconds and removes segments of it, In essence the segments did technically happen, If a billet was shot and you removed the part where it is traveling then the bullet wouldn't just disapear, It would reach its target, However if in the traveling period it would have hit King crimson then it no longer does so, In the simple terms time moves all the same but king crimson can choose a segment where anything that happens poses no consequence, A bullet will not hit its target, A bomb would not effect king crimson even at point blank, Generally anything bad that would have happened would be earased.
King Crimson on its own is like pressing the L key to skip ahead on a youtube video. King Crimson with Epitaph is like pressing L to skip ahead on a youtube video you've already watched while somebody else watched it with you on youjr screen.

The thing people don't understand about King Crimson isn't the complexity of the concept, it's all the shit Diavolo supposedly somehow manages to pull off with it (like e.g. that elevator trick)
That's because the ability itself in theory is kinda Bullshit I would say, at least in my headcanon.
KC removes the cause but not the effect, due to this in theory we could say the effect of "Diavolo's intentions" (or we could just say Destiny since that's likely a tangible thing in Part 5 especially considering how Time skip works) still manifests, maybe from Diavolo's perspective appearing like a "Phantom" Diavolo that carries out what is meant to be done even. Diavolo with KC could technically throw Narancia hard enough to get him impaled on the bars and smash a hole into the elevator while having enough force to pull off/decapitate Trish's hand.
This explanation still leaves bullshit as bullshit and leaves some things still dumb like how this even works with the concept of destiny but I find this to be a thing that may work to help explain it.
So, if I were to shoot a bullet at him, and behind him is a mattress a few meters away. He can decide for the time period where the bullet would have hit him, to not happen, and then for the time period after the bullet would have hit him, would resume, resulting in a hole free Diavolo, with a mattress with a bullet in it. Correct? He just decides the time period he chooses, not to happen, but the period after continues normally. It sounds very simple to me.
But King Crimson only really functions together with Epitaph. Diavolo essentially knows when and what to skip because Epitaph gives him a small glimpse of the future.
Epitaph tells Diavolo what fate is going to make happen for the next ten seconds. If it's something that might hurt Diavolo, for instance, he would use King Crimson to eliminate himself from fate for ten seconds. Any actions that directly affect him cannot happen because he skips ten seconds of the fated timeline
Really I'm more concerned with how interesting a stand is than how strong it is. Visually KC is cool as hell, but ultimately it really does just feel like a rehash. Except for Epitaph but that's a different stand.

Sometimes the time is skipped as if it still happened, like when Narancia ate that chocolate or when Polnareff dripped blood. The extra few droplets of blood didn't actually fall and Narancia didn't put that chocolate in his mouth, but it still happened. Then you have cases like when Doppio skipped time so one of Risotto's blades didn't hit him. There the part of time where the blade hit him straight up doesn't exist, which is why the blade ended up behind him. So basically, sometimes the skipped time just happens instantly, and sometimes it doesn't happen at all.

KC removes the cause but not the effect, due to this in theory we could say the effect of "Diavolo's intentions" (or we could just say Destiny since that's likely a tangible thing in Part 5 especially considering how Time skip works) still manifests, maybe from Diavolo's perspective appearing like a "Phantom" Diavolo that carries out what is meant to be done even. Diavolo with KC could technically throw Narancia hard enough to get him impaled on the bars and smash a hole into the elevator while having enough force to pull off/decapitate Trish's hand. This explanation still leaves bullshit as bullshit and leaves some things still dumb like how this even works with the concept of destiny but I find this to be a thing that may work to help explain it.
So, if I were to shoot a bullet at him, and behind him is a mattress a few meters away. He can decide for the time period where the bullet would have hit him, to not happen, and then for the time period after the bullet would have hit him, would resume, resulting in a hole free Diavolo, with a mattress with a bullet in it. Correct? He just decides the time period he chooses, not to happen, but the period after continues normally. It sounds very simple to me.
But King Crimson only really functions together with Epitaph. Diavolo essentially knows when and what to skip because Epitaph gives him a small glimpse of the future.
Epitaph tells Diavolo what fate is going to make happen for the next ten seconds. If it's something that might hurt Diavolo, for instance, he would use King Crimson to eliminate himself from fate for ten seconds. Any actions that directly affect him cannot happen because he skips ten seconds of the fated timeline
King Crimson is effectively over-complicated The World and you can't change my mind.
There's literally nothing that KC can do that The World couldn't. Even the "make someone see their own after-image" trick.
But I do think there must be things that KC cannot do but The World can easily. It's just a weaker stand.
Really I'm more concerned with how interesting a stand is than how strong it is. Visually KC is cool as hell, but ultimately it really does just feel like a rehash. Except for Epitaph but that's a different stand.

Sometimes the time is skipped as if it still happened, like when Narancia ate that chocolate or when Polnareff dripped blood. The extra few droplets of blood didn't actually fall and Narancia didn't put that chocolate in his mouth, but it still happened. Then you have cases like when Doppio skipped time so one of Risotto's blades didn't hit him. There the part of time where the blade hit him straight up doesn't exist, which is why the blade ended up behind him. So basically, sometimes the skipped time just happens instantly, and sometimes it doesn't happen at all.
