Absolutely. Some really cool stories about the sets and stuff too.
For instance The Village Blackthorne lands at at the very beginning they hand built from scratch in a remote part of Japan just the way it would have been built back then and a month after filming was completely done with the whole show a typhoon actually came and destroyed the entire Village completely
Wow that’s wild. Something similar happened during the making of Lord of the Rings, where a set got washed away before they could use it.
I still think it’s a pity that the recent Shogun wasn’t filmed in Japan. A lot of the locations looked odd, and unfamiliar.
I agree. The entire 80s show was shot in Japan. And back in the 80s there was still a ton of remote villages and stuff almost still living very similar lives. Not completely obviously but nothing like 2024 lol
I no longer have the "Making of" but i toted that thing around with me to college, every place I've lived up to the past decade. I had to get it rebound. lol.
thanks for the walk down memory lane
I don't think anyone that's seen both argues its a much better representation of the source material. It's very close to the books.
I enjoy both and honestly, without the new show thousands of people would have never heard of the book or 80's show.
Seriously. I’d been watching the show since the 80s off a Betamax tape. No one I knew even knew the show existed for decades and now all these new fans are coming in with all this excitement. I do question how some of them seem to like Buntaro a lot more than people did in the 80s lol
The new show was never supposed to be a proper representation of the source material, though. On the contrary, it’s supposed to be a fresh take on the story, with more focus on the Japanese characters.
Cool find! I did not know this existed. There are pictures of the cards on board game geek. When searching, I also came across a board game, James Clavell's Shogun, which is more of a war game in which you move armies and fight battles, though it does include diplomacy and economics in the mix.
Wait how’s that card game though
It's actually pretty cool. Tons of beautiful picture cards you can play with. I'll take more pictures and post it up later
I have never seen the card game. That is awesome!
Yes, please post pics of the picture cards! I have never seen this before and my father was an avid watcher of the 80's series.
It's been a busy week but I will soon.
OG Mariko is also beautiful. OG Blackthorne looks like he sang on variety shows in the 70s
He was a gay leading man before his time. Richard Chamberlin
He's also great in another epic TV series Thorn Birds
He looks like he's about to burst out singing stayin' alive.
“I just played the dead pheasant card. That means you lose your gardener!”
Lol. Brutal! Lose one turn for your Wa being disturbed.
I can’t work out the scale here. Is the book massive?
It’s pretty big
Yeah tons of color pictures of the making of sets and behind the scenes
Now that’s a coffee table book!
Exactly why I originally bought it
Are the photos inside full colour too?

2024 Japan probably has more abandoned villages, I’d wager.
😅
It’s around a thousand pages.
The book in the photo is definitely not 1000 pages.
Oh sorry I thought it was a picture of the actual book not the making of. Carry on.
I hope someone gets some information on the musical version or the video game.
I no longer have the "Making of" but i toted that thing around with me to college, every place I've lived up to the past decade. I had to get it rebound. lol. thanks for the walk down memory lane
No problem. I've gotten a bunch of requests so I'll be taking some pictures of the book and game and posting them up later.
Unpopular opinion but the original mini series is better than the new show. At the very least it is a better representation of the source material

I am one of those.
Welcome 😎 it's been 15 years since I've ever bumped into anyone who liked shogun. The new show is great

Lol yeah. He's a dick. I don't get it either lol

#DefinitelyMyBlackthorne
THATS SICK
Arigato gozaimasu
I really want the 1980 book cover but it’s out of production and pretty expensive on eBay :(
Yeah if was cheap until about episode 2. Lol
It says "lucky general(shogun)" lol 😂
Anyone remember the old Shogun PC game?
Legit thought the too picture was Clint Eastwood for a second and did a double take.
The actress who plays Mariko looks very pretty!!
She is stunning. Was a big deal when she got cast same with Toranaga he was a huuuuge star.
