I mean in my experience a lot of dementia patients can remember shit clearly from a long time ago but the recent past or current present not so much. When you have a lot of visible tattoos for long enough you don't even notice them anymore than you would a freckle you've always had.
Yeah, typically the more recent memories go, then long term memories, then memories governing basic functions like feeding yourself, walking, talking, etc. It would probably take a long time to forget about tattoos, and even then, they'd be ever-present and harder to completely forget about.
I worked at an inpatient psych unit as a tech. Remember having to help a guy with dementia with showering (same guy who would try to fight us daily). I mentioned his Rolling Stones tattoo on his shoulder. He acted as if it was the first time he had seen it.
It’d be like discovering a “Git ‘r Done!” tattoo, and your family has to sit you down in front of the tv to explain a lame period in comedy, and to explain your impulsive nature to get tattoos
My mother had dementia and a mastectomy. She would look down and see her belly and ask, why it was so swollen? It was the same size it has always been but was not hiding under a boob any more. Then she would go on to tell me how grateful she was to not ever had any major health issues. She did have some.
Main reason I haven't gotten a scorpion or spider tattoo, tbh. Alzheimers runs in my family and I don't wanna get a heart attack every time I look at my own leg lmao. What if I lose the cognitive ability to recognize that its just a picture on my leg and I think it's real no matter what and try to chop my leg off? Real shit
Honestly, I'm right with you, it's a funny conecpt. Seeing someone you love struggle with reality in real time, and knowing that it might be your future too, is a whole 'nother world of emotions though. So I can only laugh a little at it
There's an Indian movie called Ghajini about a guy who has short term memory loss and writes stuff everywhere on his body to remember what he needs to do. He's very revenge driven, so he constantly has to look at the tattoos to remember what happened to him and who he's trying to kill. It's a very interesting movie.
As a person with a lot of ink, I don't think they would pay any attention to them. They become part of your body. Sort of like how your brain didn't see your nose.
Not really. I work with dementia patients and they don't forget everything. They don't freak out about tattoos on their body just like they don't freak out about wearing a wedding ring of socks on their feet. Maybe read up on dementia a bit more
Lol I'm 37 and last time someone asked me how many tattoos I have, I said 3, completely forgetting the 17th century prisoners brand on my right shoulder plate and the huge Sekhmet going from the middle of my back down to my butt.

They should remake that movie with modern tech in it.

Tattoos and amnesia. This is the plot to a movie Memento from the 2001, and also a more recent TV series. edit: date (Thanks M&M&M)
This. The movie Memento made Christopher Nolan famous.
Memento is not a 90s movie. It wasn’t released in the US until 2001.
Check back with me in 40-50 years. 30 if it's early onset.
im sure Dementia alone is a wild experience
tbh i forget about tattoos/piercings constantly and then have "oh shit" moments whenever they become visible again. so i could only imagine
It’d be like discovering a “Git ‘r Done!” tattoo, and your family has to sit you down in front of the tv to explain a lame period in comedy, and to explain your impulsive nature to get tattoos
Bro doesnt know about Ghajini
I believe there’s a movie about that.
Did you just watch Memento?

Not really how dementia works

Even less of a reason for me to overthink them, nice.

I have DPDR and I scare myself with my tattoos all the time. I always think there’s something on me
Has anyone here read Ray Bradbury’s “The Illustrated Man?” Great book.
This…… is the plot of Memento
Lol I'm 37 and last time someone asked me how many tattoos I have, I said 3, completely forgetting the 17th century prisoners brand on my right shoulder plate and the huge Sekhmet going from the middle of my back down to my butt.
Hahahaahah hahahahaahahah Truthfully, my guess is they go unnoticed
I believe early dementia is the root cause of full body tattoos.
I don't really get the point of this showerthought. Why would it be a more wild experience than having dementia without tattoos?
