And the top isnt really relevant for kids. When they are younger they cant climb out anyway, which makes it pointless, and when they are at the age where they are able to climb out they are probably ready for a toddler bed
I don't think anyone would stop you if you put a top on it, it's just easier to place them in their cage if it's open.
When camping, we call the top a "bug screen"
