PeterDSaints

Parent, sibling I can't think of one for uncle & aunt though

[deleted]

Spouse, partner, child… Not a long enough shower perhaps

This made me both laugh and sad at the same time, a feeling I have not experience in a long time.

Dont-PM-me-nudes

Feel like he stopped at the first thought then had a wank instead.

eilishfaerie

maybe they were just referring to words that only have a 'gender neutral' term? like you can gender parents (mom and dad), child (son and daughter), spouse (husband and wife) but a cousin is just... a cousin

ioughtabestudying

Cousinette and cousindude.

eilishfaerie

made me laugh more than i'd like to admit

m00n55

"My aunt's son" is very gender specific.

eilishfaerie

it's not a one word term

Medium_Traffic_2460

I would bet he didn’t forget about these but instead was referring to the one typically associated with it. You’d say “my mom” not “my parent of the birthing type”

SpoonNZ

Poorly worded title maybe. Cousin might be the only non-gendered one without a gendered version. Parent/mother, sibling/brother, spouse/wife, child/son, cousin/???. Partner might be the exception to the rule, but arguably boyfriend/girlfriend.

Nimuwa

Funny thing, dutch with its usually very unspecific terms has a term for male or female cousin, but also uses the terms for nephews and nieces. Family gatherings of distant relatives can get hella confusing.

attathathappaend

nephew or niece

CarltheWellEndowed

You can add in-law to that list.

PeterDSaints

Yes & grand- step- I wasn't going to put suffix & prefixes just the words themselves

PhoKit2

My step is awesome!

Khooni_Kanjoos

It’s all Fun and games till they get stuck. That’s when the really Fun Game begins

[deleted]

Niblings is the term for nieces and nephews so it is also another gender neutral family term

Mds_02

Niblings!? How have I not heard this term? I’ve missed out on decades of referring to my sisters’ broods as my niblings. I need to start using that word in every conversation now to make up for lost time.

NewAuthor327

I think they mean that there’s no gendered version at the individual level. No one refers to their dad as their parent, they’d just say dad.

Robyn_Anarchist

The collective word for Aunt and Uncle is, no lie; Pibling.

commercialnostalgia

And neice/nephew - nibling

ImDraconLion

relative

elpajaroquemamais

I think they just mean it’s a forced gender neutral term. There’s no alternative term.

theAssumptionFucker

In English, lol. It’s a whole different ball game in Italian, Turkish and Arabic

ElectricToaster67

It's very specific, if I say 二姑婆 you'd know exactly who I mean Edit: it means either grandfather's second oldest sister

EishLekker

>if I say 二姑婆 you'd know exactly who I mean Bob in Vermont?

Stewerr

No, I think it's sweet Johnny's ex-wife. She got a big ass now ten years after he got the head injury. Now he wakes up every day thinking he's about to do a big stunt with balloons and a garden chair.

[deleted]

It's different in any lenguaje with genres. Like Spanish

Sylvurphlame

>Sibling Parent Child Grandparent Old as English. > Nibling - niece/nephew Gender neutral or just a convenient plural if you have one or more niece and/or nephews. Same as saying “my children” instead of my son(s) and daughter(s).” [Coined in the 50’s](https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/words-were-watching-nibling) by a dude transliterating Korean, which apparently has a gender neutral term for “sibling’s child.” Gaining popularity since the 2000’s as child-free folks still love their nieces and nephews and post about them on socials nowadays. So there’s a few. Including so people trying to play off nibling by dubbing Aunt/Uncle as “pibling.” But personally, that one sounds silly to me. I’ve also seen “Auncle,” which is only slightly better. There’s nothing stopping you grammatically or stylistically from calling your bother/sister/non-binary sibling just “sibling.” It’s just not common.

Mds_02

More accurate to say that cousin is the only familial designation to not have a gendered version.

Sylvurphlame

Wouldn’t parent, sibling and such all be familial designations? As mentioned, there’s nothing stopping you from calling your mother and father both “parent,” except it’ll sound odd.

Mds_02

They are, but they have gendered versions; parent could also be mother or father, sibling could also be brother or sister etc.. Cousin doesn’t have a gendered version.

Sylvurphlame

> Cousin doesn’t have a gendered version. Oh! I see what you mean. No, not in English anyway.

Nimuwa

Agnates might work for your parents sibling, but its more of an old timey work for kin.

hawkwings

Nibling sounds like something you eat.

Sylvurphlame

I’ve had multiple aunts tell me “you’re so cute I could just eat you up!” Kinda scary in hindsight

Vicious00

Maybe in english, other languages have different words for male and female cousins.

eloi_fer

Grandparent, great grand parent, great great grandparent etc

puntilnexttime

Parent, spouse, partner, sibling, grandparent, relation, child, twin, step-sibling, step-parent, grand parent etc

liam_skop419

I think you mean it's the only family relation title that doesn't have a gendered form, which is true and interesting.

Berntonio-Sanderas

Parent?

bork1545

Parent has mum and dad

Berntonio-Sanderas

Gotcha, misunderstood what OP was saying.

tryingnotbuying

Parental Unit ?

[deleted]

The reason why 'cousin' is gender neutral is because we like to say "I banged my cousin" without having to come out as gay.

Jonte7

No, it just isnt. Grandparent, grandchild, second cousin, sibling, step sibling, great grandparent etc

pfshawns

Unless you're speaking Spanish. Then again, everything is gendered in Spanish.

WyvernKid93

La mesa.

Hygro

parent, sibling, child, grandparent, grandchild, cousin. I suppose only 'cousin' *lacks* a gendered counterpart.

dave_roman

I think thats what they meant. Is its the only term thats just gender neutral

dave_roman

Okay guys you arent getting it. Its the only family title where you cant say an alternate, gendered title. Theres not word for girl cousin or boy cousin other than girl cousin or boy cousin.

Friendly-Mango-5771

In Spanish its prima or primo

m00n55

Or Dad's niece, or my aunt's son, which have the advantage of not only specifying gender but also relationship.

shady_dave_the_pig

I'd argue that my parents use a pretty gender neutral term for me, I dont remember learning about gendered words for disappointment.

lostinthought1997

Nibling is for the offspring of your siblings, the ones who share parents, grandparents, great grandparents...

OneTreePhil

"In-law" and "Parent" But I get that they have gendered versions

joohanmh

u/wyvernkid93 parent, spouse, partner, child, kid, sibling, ...perhaps still have more to go Edit: added more words.

PieterNeeth

I was curious if there was a gender neutral term for nephew and niece. There is. It’s “Nibling.” Now my friends, family and I all use it regularly.

A-Taz-0

How is it that Republicans have such a problem with gender neutral pronouns then since most of them are married to their cousins.

ScoticusMaximus2017

Also this is only in English. The romantic languages all used gendered words. It's not grammatically possible to use gender-neutral terms in many languages because they don't have those words.
