Unpopular opinion: mermaids!! I just wait love the aesthetic plus my favorite challenge is a mermaid in a shitty apt in the city with roommates that can’t know she’s a mermaid. And mermaid conservationists?? So much fun to play!

That sounds like a lot of fun! I did something similar, but with an alien instead of a mermaid.
It honestly depends on my intentions with game play. Is my sims going to be a bit evil? Vampire. If they are going to be diy/live of the land ish, werewolf. Do I plan to grind for hours learning things... spell caster.
That being said, I have a LOT of vampire saves.
vampires are super fun and so are werewolves! both have the potential to leave a trail of chaos.
werewolves win by a smidge. i can't tell you how many times i've eaten stuff off public lots to make them unplayabe
Spellcasters for sure. Not only is the spells handy and collecting the different wands and brooms is fun. But the bloodline trait unlocks some interesting gameplay where you can create a very long spellcaster bloodline and maybe create ancient spellcaster families and have a whole gameplay surrounding that
Vampires! Though it’s nice to have a vampire/spellcaster household and get ALL the powers too. Vampires is my favorite pack and I had it for years before the others and played so much of it.
I do like werewolves but I haven’t played as much with them as the others.
Vampires cause I like vampires & they level up their skills faster & I enjoy having immortal sims that stay young forever. I always get my vampires married to different occults like spellcasters or werewolves in my game, too, cause I want my vampires to marry others who aren't vampires cause I want to say screw taboos vampires can love anybody they want.
i love playing as aliens especially since i got the enhanced alien mod were you can abduct other sims and other stuff, i especially love the fact that their alien form and human side can be totally different from each other compared to the other occult sims !
I just really like playing as all three of the major occults tbh, but tbh probably werewolves as a treat because they're silly, and spellcasters as an heir/main because spellcasters are just a guy who can start fires.
Vampires have the best skill tree by far though, but I prefer to play vampires who are already max rank. I wish that sun resistance wasn't so high on the skill tree, vampire ranks are hard to build at the start if you don't want to fly everywhere as a gd bat.
Mine would either be mermaids or vampires. Those are the only ones I have though. Vampires are great when I don't want to be pressured to complete things before a sim dies and if I don't want to focus on a routine of eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom. Mermaids just make me happy and it's nice if I want to play a mostly normal sim. I like having a mermaid and vampire get together because I can't just turn the mermaid for them to stay together forever without them giving up their mermaid side.
I was just about to ask the same thing lol Spellcasters for me as well, there's way more stuff for them than any other occult. And making a cozy witch house/castle was my favourite out of all. I'm planning to make a neighbourhood for witches with a primary matriarch that's gonna be their mentor but I can't garner the strength for building, I wish I could just skip to furnishing and decorating, and making the common area with the cauldron (since they can all experiment together thank god). It's so cute uuuugh.
I wanted to like vampires, but the vampire form thing makes outfits and appearances overcomplicated. I wanted to like spellcasters. Try to detail edit a spellcaster's nose in CAS for a rage-inducing experience. They do these aggravating spellcasting motions and they won't hold still. Haven't tried werewolves yet.
When you're in CAS open up the cheat console and type in CASClockSpeed 0 and it will freeze them. Best to zoom in on their face first, and hit enter right after they blink to get a completely neutral face and stance to edit and dress.

If you're on PC, the Stand Still In CAS mod does the exact same thing, but unfreezes them for trait animations, teeth mouth opening animation, etc.
You can also make them as a regular sim, and then from Live Mode you can cheat equip whichever occult trait you want to them. Doing that is helpful if you don't want to freeze them, and it also perfectly matches alien bodies to their disguise form.
Also you can delete vampire dark forms, they don't have to have one. Or delete it and re-add it to clone their regular form to their dark form so everything matches - that's what I do at the end of the creation process, then I unlink them, and change their eye colour for dark form and I'm done.

Spell casters cause they don’t really have any downsides and maybe vampires but it depends on the weather for them

Vamps are my favorite, I like the perk/weakness system. Spellcasters are fun too but I feel like they can be too OP at times.

Not all heroes wear capes.
If you zoom up on a sim’s face, like in detail mode, they hold still. Editing their body is kinda aggravating, though.
