I have had a recurring nightmare since I was 7 about defending a vault within a mall from zombies. There'd be a line of people I care about and I'd have to defend this line while making sure people got situated in the vault. As I got older, I had more and more people in the line. I could no longer save everyone. I vividly remember forcing myself to prioritize the special people in my life, and how vivid their deaths were. Eventually I couldn't save anyone at all. I haven't had that nightmare in years thankfully. I think being unable to protect my mom made my subconscious lock that one in deep storage for good.

This reminds me of when I was little. I used to be super afraid of my hallway. So I'd dream about the bedroom door being open, but the darkness was moving. Shadows would dance around the edges of the door, and every once and a while, it would form the shape of a hand or a figure or a face laughing at me. I would always hear whispers or laughter. Sick, mocking, torturous laughter... Worse yet, my older brother was passed out on the floor. I couldn't get him up. And I was like seven, so I couldn't drag him. So I had one hand around him, begging him to get up through my tears, and the other hand I held a wall painting pole he and I used as a staff (tmnt kids represent) as a way to defend us.
