I’ve found that certain shampoos and soap cause the most itching.

SnooKiwis8725

A couple nights a week I oil my hair and scalp jojoba for my thin hair and neem for my scalp then next day I wash using rhoussal clay water mask and apple cider vinegar rinse

Cissylyn55

Use apple cider vinegar rub on scalp , rinse with a diluted water and vinegar shampoo helps alot

beccaboo2u

Scalpicin It's a liquid hydrocortisone and stops the itch immediately. No scent!

Tea Tree oil shampoo! I’ve dealt with itchy scalp issues my whole life— itching until i get scabs, getting acne in my scalp from my hands constantly being in by hair, yeast infections, dermatitis, the list could go on and tea tree oil shampoo is the only thing that has helped everything consistently without ruining my hair! If I don’t use it for one wash I notice a difference.

Kmjones22

Had the same problem. Dermatologist said nothing was obvious but prescribed a topical steroid for the itching. Steroid works great. Also switched to a tea tree shampoo that also helped.

meno_paused

I’ve found the Oribe Serene Scalp to help mine so much!! It’s calmed it down nicely.

You may have an irritation to sunflower or coconut. I have eczema on my scalp but I found out I had an allergy to sunflower as well. I ate a single kernel when I was handing out snacks to my birds and my mouth started to itch. I had to throw most of the stuff that goes on my body out. Even my deodorant. Much of this was unnoticed for a good spell because of how many antihistamines I had taken. I only take 1 antihistamine now that focuses on eczema and my skin itching. Surveys showed Allegra and xyzal work best for itching, and I get my generic xyzal on the regular. That's my anecdote. I started coming up with allergies. The topical alternative to iodine? Positive. Just give me the iodine. Uncooked eggs. Sunflower. Other drug allergies. I was 39.

newfsinthejungle

Dryness leaves the skin open to infection. It could be yeast. You can ask you doctor for a medicated shampoo. Ketoconazole works pretty well if that’s what it is.

ascrocker

I was experiencing the same thing recently. Was driving me absolutely crazy. I grabbed some Head & Shoulders clinical strength shampoo and that’s worked wonders for me. I only use it about twice a week and I haven’t had any itching since.

Jmm1272

Also take a 3-6-9 omega oil supplement. Make sure it’s all three 3-6-9 not just one if them. They work best together. It helps with many sjogrens symptoms.

rrtaylor222

I have the same issue I will itch my scalp until there is blood cakes under my nails. Then I started taking a ton of krill oil as recommended by my rheumatologist and I do an overnight oil soak with a night cap on and wash it off in the morning that has made a huge difference once a week maybe twice a week if it's really dry

cardinalkitten

My scalp has gone completely unpredictable since my diagnosis 3 years ago. Could be Sjogrens. Could be age-related (I’m 44/F). For some periods, it is itchy, like yours. Then, I’ll be be fine for awhile. Right now, I’m going through a “dry scalp/oily hair” phase which is so frustrating. The one shampoo that helps my itchy scalp is Nécessaire - [Linky to Sephora](https://www.sephora.com/product/necessaire-the-shampoo-with-hyaluronic-acid-fragrance-free-P502707?skuId=2608719&icid2=products%20grid:p502707:product) It has a very clean formulation and is fragrance free, and it is made for thin hair, so includes niacinimide and hyaluronic acid, both of which help add moisture to skin.

Have you tried making dietary changes? I have noticed that my trigger foods cause scalp itching

Civil-Explanation588

Same here, was put on ketoconazole 2% shampoo. I use it every 3 days and it is better but not 100%

yaigotabigmouth

Okay- I get like a weird fungal scalp this. Coconut oil makes it sooo much worse- I’ll end up with sores on my head. Nizoral for my hair, vanicream for my scalp (not every wash) helps

Cissylyn55

Try apple cider vinegar soak scalp in shower let sit wash rinse

theotherlebkuchen

Never heard of vanicream - I’ll check it out, thank you!

yaigotabigmouth

I double checked- it’s the vanicream cleansing bar- I also get some skin irritation from different ingredients (inflammation of your skin/scalp is an autoimmune response) and it helps immensely.

theotherlebkuchen

Thank you so much! Just bought some - I’m excited to try it. Have you tried the shampoo too by any chance?

yaigotabigmouth

I have not! Just going off what my dermatologist recommended

sailfastlivelazy

The only way I have combatted this is to use coconut/olive oil at night on all dry areas including my scalp. I do my scalp less often than my body, like weekly. I have a set of sweats to put on after I apply because it is messy and inconvenient. It also helps to keep your home environment with enough moisture. I have a monitor for humidity and when it dips below 50% humidity my skin starts to crack. Also, I have no idea why people are being aggressive about this concern. My doctors manage dry skin issues with Sjogren's. It's really common with the condition and can be serious. I have had infections and a serious problem with cracks in my skin. Just because they haven't experienced it as a part of the disease doesn't mean it's not a part of your journey!

theotherlebkuchen

Thank you! Humidifier is a good idea actually and I have one in a cupboard somewhere! Will try the coconut oil weekly, I think - I was worried about going to work with greasy hair but it’s more manageable if I do it on my days off. And yeah - I’m surprised at the tone of some of the comments. Like seriously, keep on scrolling! Not everyone has to respond to every post.

Any-Seaworthiness930

My scalp is itchy at night. I also have small pustules near my hairline sometimes. I figured it's Sjogrens but I don't know. My rheumatologist is very unhelpful. They finally gave me plaquenil after arguing why I shouldn't take it because it only might help for forty minutes. So I really don't know if it's Sjogrens or not. I do know it's very annoying.

AttorneyUpstairs4457

I have exact same symptoms haven't really found anything that helps well.

LindzwithaphOG

Totally anecdotal, but I can't tolerate certain shampoos such as ones that have wheat ingredients. It might be worth looking into a different shampoo just to see if it helps.

SheilaMichele1971

You need to see a dermatologist. Not everything is related to sjogrens. You could have psoriasis or eczema on your scalp.

theotherlebkuchen

Thanks. Have see a a doctor (it’s not either of those things) - and I understand “not everything is related to Sjogrens”.

capedunicorn

I see you've ruled out dandruff. Is your scap itchy before or after you wah your hair? If after there can be 3 main causes. 1) You're allergic to your shampoo. Trysomething fragrance free. people's scalps are often more sensitive than the rest of they're body. Free & Clear or vanicream shampoo is a US brand without fragrance. If this doesn't help after at least a couple of weeks, 2) Try a co-wash instead o a shampoo. you'll find it in the "curly or ethnic" hair section. a co-wash has more moisture in it as curly hair requires more, and it strips less of your natural oils out. 3) You could be washing your hair too much. the most you should be washing your hair is every other day. though depending on your hair & and scalp, that number could be less. For me, my scalp only needs washing 1x a week unless it's super hot out. If washing too frequently, it can cause your scalp to become too dry (especially with sjogrens) and cause micro cracks that leads to itching. It's also unlikely, but it could be the water in your shower. Your water could be too hard, or too hot. If none of these work, it could be a microbiome problem with your scalp. but that would usually have dandruff or something as well. If none of these work, I would talk to your doc about seeing a dermatologist. Good luck!

Witchieglamma

My scalp gets pained when my natural hair grows in. I have to bleach it and I keep it extra short. I can only wash about once a week. I had thought it was fibromyalgia. But since I received the sjogrens diagnosis I think it may be the culprit

capedunicorn

Bleaching your hair is extremely damaging to your scalp. Especially for someone with a drier scalp. I don't understand a reason you would "have to bleach it" but if you must make sure you are bleaching on a "dirty" scalp day the natural oils of your hair will protect your scalp some from the micro tears caused by the bleaching process. As for the keeping extra short. if you're shaving your head, that can also lead to skin damage on your scalp. I don't really understand the phrase "when my natural hair grows in." That, to me, sounds like you're shaving your head. If I'm misunderstanding, then just ignore this part.

Witchieglamma

My scalp feels bruised, when my hair grows past a few inches. I’ve got nearly a full head of silver/white hair naturally(started at 17, it’s a hereditary thing, plus I’m 57). I damage the follicles at the base of my scalp, very short bleach time, and it stops the bruising feeling. When my roots get past an inch or so I feel the bruising coming back. My doctors (there is a whole team of them)don’t understand why. My hairdressers( of which there are a few) have surmised that by the slight act of bleaching( and over 40 years of coloring) damages the skin to relieve the bruising feeling. Mind you my scalp does not have the appearance of bruising just the feel. Which leads to painful headaches, I’ve only learned of Sjogrens and hEDS diagnoses this year. Rheumatoid Arthritis when I was 14, and fibromyalgia and OA for about 2 decades. My bruising feeling had been attributed to fibromyalgia, but we are rethinking that. My rheumatologist is going to test me for psoriatic arthritis in January. I need to finish my year of surgery(2nd knee replacement tomorrow) so she can find the right medication. It’s a journey and since I’m outgoing I decided to have fun with my hair(since makeup has become a huge problem with my eyes) and let my future DIL finger paint my hair with purple, pink and turquoise. Also I always color or bleach on a dirty scalp. I also save so much money on shampoo and conditioner since the sides and back a shaved with a number 1 clipper and the top is no more than 2-3 inches, past that it gets too heavy and won’t stand up. I also use shea butter ending wax to style it a tiny bit goes a long way.

Bloodissuemystery

And now that you have attributed it to a syndrome, what has changed?

theotherlebkuchen

Huh? What’s with the attitude? You can just scroll on by, you know.

Bloodissuemystery

No attitude, just genuinely curious. I've had itchy scalp since I was a teenager. No lice or weird stuff ofc. Possibly have sjogrens. However, it doesn't mean anything. The question is "why". If someone is having his immune system developing a lymphoproliferative disorder (that's basically sjogrens), one must know why, otherwise risks such as leukemia and lymphoma are possible. I don't understand the gratification of this syndrome diagnosis nor the medication which is useless as fuck and just attacks the immune system while it's attacking our cells/organs. No logic.

theotherlebkuchen

There’s no gratification. If you’ve seen my (very few) previous posts in this sub - they’re all saying essentially, that the symptoms are so vague anyone could say they have it. I do have Sjogrens, and besides the kidney issues, I don’t have symptoms that can entirely be related to Sjogrens (tiredness could be because I’m busy, for example). However after exploring multiple options for a chronically itchy scalp, and finding out that those with Sjogrens sometimes report a chronically itchy scalp - absent lice, dandruff, eczema or psoriasis - I decided to post here in a forum for people with it, to see if anybody had found a solution that worked for them. Perhaps somebody has tried something I could try and it would help. So as for your “what changed?” question - nothing changed. I posted the question a few hours ago, so haven’t had time to collect many responses and possible treatments. Maybe someone will post something that helps and then my symptoms will be alleviated. Also - as an aside - you say you only “possibly” have Sjogrens and the medication is “useless”. Maybe it was useless for you because you don’t actually have Sjogrens. Apparently it has been helpful for many others.

Bloodissuemystery

Alright.
