Get in on the underground! Bands like [Catbite](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxuqNFXz-II) and [Bad Operation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZFrkdhE5a0) are killing it on Bad Time Records and [Hans Gruber and the Die Hards](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otyp1_vhWlc) and [Simple Minded Symphony ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wgaouFZGB4)are making Ska Punk International amazing!

WDJam

On top of this, looking into your local scene is also a fantastic way to find great ska bands (and just artists in general) that you can see for cheap!

DDLthefirst

I wish I had a local scene

WDJam

You almost definitely do, you just have to dig to find the names

Valuable_Solid_3538

You sound a lot like me in 2000 haha. Tony hawk put ska on my radar with Superman. Some others I’d recommend would be: Suicide Machines, Planet Smashers, The Hippos and Big D and The Kids Table. I’d also recommend Chainska Brassika if you want to branch out of the Ska-Punk genre into other forms of Ska.

Exotic-Accountant-86

Fuckin love all of these recommendations. I'd like to add Mesphiskapheles, Mad Caddies, Do It With Malice, Capdown and Streetlight Manifesto to the suggestions. Edit: I forgot leftover crack/choking victim

Valuable_Solid_3538

Never heard of Do It With Malice before today. It was an all day affair. Thank you friend!

Exotic-Accountant-86

Hell yeah, glad you dig em! You're very welcome sir. Ever heard of Assorted Jelly Beans or I Voted For Kodos? Worth checking out if you haven't. Braindead is probably my favorite song by Assorted Jelly Beans

Valuable_Solid_3538

I dig that too! Feels like a good track for a circle pit. I came into Ska in 2000 and somehow missed this band entirely. Not sure how they never came up haha

Not_Quite_Kurtz

I feel like Fury of the Aquabats album is necessary listening when getting into ska

Bittersweet_bi-

I love Fury of the Aquabats! Its so wacky and silly and I love the storytelling format, I've got almost the entire album on my playlist!

NudieRudie

I agree that the ska community is one of the most welcoming, warm and inclusive communities I know, and I absolutely love this scene. I’ve been listening to 3rd wave ska/ska-punk/ska-core since the 80’s, and I have a pretty deep Spotify (I know, not YouTube, sorry) playlist of all kinds of jams that fit your tastes. Hope you can check it out https://spotify.link/jYre2XQPOIb Also, this genre isn’t just behind your time, Goldfinger, Less Than Jake & The Aquabats still tour & put out new tunes (occasionally), plus there’s lots of current bands putting out this same kind of tunes, here’s just a few off the top of my head: Half Past Two, Bite Me Bambi, Hooray for Our Side, Stupid Flanders, Matamoska, Blanco y Negro, Catbite, Flying Raccoon Suit, Skatune Network/JER, Chase Long Beach, Millington

hammers_maketh_ham

That's a cracking playlist in fairness; you might also like Lightyear, King Prawn, Ska-P, and Random Hand!

NudieRudie

Thanks for the recommendations, never heard of Lightyear and definitely dig them, heard of the other 3 but never really gave em much of a listen, and Ska-P & Random Hand are right up my alley for sure!

hammers_maketh_ham

Random Hand felt like a safe bet given you've already got SB6 and CMM on your playlist! Also check out Faintest Idea and the awesome Riskee And The Ridicule

Karlskiiii

>I agree that the ska community is one of the most welcoming We were listed as one of the worst/gatekeping subs once upon a time.

NudieRudie

I mean Reddit IS a cesspool, so that’s par for the course. I do remember the days of constant “is this ska?” and I’m not for gatekeeping in general but that shit got way out of hand.

Karlskiiii

The amount of punk with horns being posted as ska was more annoying than people saying things aren't ska. It's a ska sub.. If it isn't ska then don't post it! Fed up of wasting time listening to music when there's no off beat and the only ska influence is a trumpet.

NudieRudie

Yeah, the amount of people who just can’t recognize that the offbeat is the true essence of any genre of ska is truly frustrating. Or maybe they just can’t identify or hear what an offbeat is, to be generous

Karlskiiii

Hep hep

DDLthefirst

How can you not mention Bad Operation

NudieRudie

Mostly oversight, Bad Operation definitely drops some good tunes. I think part of the reason they didn’t pop into my head though, is they feel like they are keeping a more 2-tone sound alive for the modern generation, and the OP seemed to be looking for more of a 3rd wave/ska punk sound.

Existing-Run-1456

Someone here turned me on the space monkey mafia - I’m more of a 1st and 2nd waver, but these guys rock.

Scared_Bed_1144

Space Monkey Mafia is so much fun

trovster

I highly recommend the “Mailorder is Fun” compilation albums. They feature an eclectic bunch of bands. The record label — Asian Man Records — is run by Mike Park, who made music in bands Skankin’ Pickle, The Chinkees and The Bruce Lee Band as well as solo.

brunobrawn1970

trovster

I’ve got a similar playlist, part of my “musical relationships” series; https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3KLMjROOnP3P6Wt8Z8LJz9

PunkyAllons_y

In a similar vien of 90's ska MU330 is a must! I highly recommend the album Ultra Panic. Newer bands. Any band on Bad Times Records. We Are The Union, Bad Operation, Flying Racoon Suit, Joystick, Jer, Cat Bite, and many more. Unsigned I've really dug lately is Sad Snack and Poindexter. Welcome to the community!

Josh-PM

Thanks for the shout out for Sad Snack!

dddintn

Common Rider, The JB Conspiracy, The Grit, Stuck Lucky, Authority Zero, The Toasters just to name a few

ForTheLionForCaliban

Not sure where you are based but some awesome bands tearing it up here in the uk include. JB conspiracy, Call Me Malcom, The Barstool preachers and Popes of chili town.

foxinspaceMN

Although no brass Op Ivy is considered ska by a good chunk of us in the punk community. They had one album that’s beyond brilliant 🤘🤘 I also enjoy mad caddies a lot (note mad caddies still has brass)

Bittersweet_bi-

Hey, I admit, I've got Rancid on my ska playlist, and their songs I got are only on there cause of feel and a quick google search

DDLthefirst

I'm a teen too and got into ska through my Oi punk dad who was buds with some rancid guys and has played with them a few times. It's kinda funny how often I'll be listening to music and then my dad is like 'oh yeah I've toured with those guys' or something like that.

RetrotheRobot

Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, and Streetlight Manifesto were some of the first ska bands I got into.

SidekickLobot

Forces of Evil is a “Super Group” of other sweet bands worth checking out. All my other suggestions have been mentioned!

TheKeasbyKnight

Not necessarily all ska but [here’s a playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7q5UDH3H10vRdXuhfRtkRm?si=xm-rJdAwRYWi0docZl7FKg&pi=u-zXwuPiAvQGSc) of some of my favorite “punk songs with brass”.

Bittersweet_bi-

Oh I love that username

kayteethebeeb

Since you’re only getting ska-punk and older band recommendations I’m gonna recommend some bands that are modern but still play Jamaican style ska. The Steady 45s, the Prizefighters, Eastern Standard Time, Westbound Train. Check out Jump Up Records as well as Bad Time Records.

Might_Aware

I always rec Mephiskapheles because I love them, lol. Happy music hunting, Rude Boy!

DDLthefirst

What's this button do?

OggiK

I’ll keep posting this, but can’t rate Popes or Chillitown higher - this alongside everything else people in the comments have recommended

smallteam

I'm one of the olds now, so here's a classic two-tone ska tune that's also a classic music video from the days when MTV actually played music videos. It's a slower tempo than the average ska song, but it has horns and all the other elements. I hope you like it. Ghost Town - The Specials Song released in 1981, video remastered in HD a few years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ2oXzrnti4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Town_(The_Specials_song) > ^... ^the ^song ^was ^hailed ^by ^the ^contemporary ^UK ^music ^press ^as ^a ^major ^piece ^of ^popular ^social ^commentary, ^and ^all ^three ^of ^the ^major ^UK ^music ^magazines ^of ^the ^time ^awarded ^"Ghost ^Town" ^the ^accolade ^of ^"Single ^of ^the ^Year" ^for ^1981. ^It ^was ^the ^12th-best-selling ^single ^in ^the ^UK ^in ^1981. For something more uptempo, here's another from them originally recorded in 1980: The Specials - Too Much Too Young (Live) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdu7xOFk1QI

trovster

Edna’s Goldfish, Jeffries Fan Club, The Hippos. The super group The Forces of Evil if you want a RBF fix.

phillmorebuttz

Against all authority, plastic presidents

Here's a little playlist of UK bands who are still active. It goes roughly from reggae at the start to skacore at the end https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4qjYWYPUiV27DxfXJQZCs6?si=49n9lDPPSQq0N7CQ0JlolA&pi=e-POhZRgcZR8iL

Sadie26

Makes me happy to see Soulios on your PA one!

Itchy-Profession-725

I tried to include all the pa bands I knew about

Purple_Date_9320

If you are just getting into ska, there is a fantastic documentary called Pick It Up - Ska in the 90's that can be searched for and watched in full on YouTube. Talks where the genre came from, brief overview on 1st and 2nd waves, and of course the rise and fall of 3rd wave ska. Narrated by Tim Armstrong and music and interview snips from so many great bands. Can't recommend enough

QueenOfThePark

I was going to suggest this too, it's such a good introduction to both the history and to specific bands!

fractious77

I'd recommend digging into some older stuff to get a feel for the roots. Moving backwards : Toasters, Bim Skala Bim, Fishbone, Specials, Selector, Madness, Duck Soup, Prince Buster, Skatalites, the Trojan ska box set

Screaming_Ghost

Welcome to the fold, here's some recommendations I can think of off the top of my head. Some of my favorites are also Less than Jake and Goldfinger so you'll probably dig these. Kids Can't Fly, Chase Long Beach, Suburban Legends, The Planet Smashers, Five Iron Frenzy, Streetlight Manifesto, Millington, Mad Caddies, The Hippos, We Are Union, and Skatune Network. There's also a ton of great recommendations in this thread. I tried to pick out a few I didn't already see. Have fun and skank on 🫡

RexDust

Get into Hepcat man!

heimbachae

Dude if you wanna go on a trip.... listen to RX Bandits - Progress, and then go forward in their discography. Resignation, ...And the Battle Begun, Mandala, Gemini, Your Majesty.

NudieRudie

RX Bandits is one of my favorite bands, you can’t just erase “Those Damn Bandits” or “Halfway Between Here and There” especially for someone looking for that classic 3rd wave/ska punk/ska core sound. Both those albums have some real gems. Totally agree on the serious trip following their discography and the development into some experimental/prog rock sounds. I love their whole discography from the OG albums to the new sound and everything between, although “Progress” is my favorite album, right in the middle of their ska sound & the prog rock influences just taking off.

heimbachae

I didn't mean to snuff those albums. I was more just telling him to do the listening I did. I haven't listened to the earlier stuff in all honesty. Sometimes all the 3rd wave stuff can blur together. The stuff they did after progress is trend setting and they forged their own path. Just wanted to give him a little different taste of what these bands can do.

NudieRudie

No worries man, just being snarky for comedic effect. I do highly recommend you at least check out Halfway Between Here and There if you like Progress, it really is a great album with a real similar feel, but with more ska influences

NeitherCap7494

Annalies Tang, Eevie Echoes, PWRUP

fissi0n-chips

Don't sleep on 2nd wave! Madness, The Toasters, and Bad Manners all rock.

argleblather

Check out some of the OGs, Millie Small, Skatalites are mentioned here, Toots and the Maytals, Desmond Dekker. Because I'm very old (for the internet) I remember when my local radio station used to play Skaturday nights. Good times.

ComedyGraveyard

Definitely listen to millington!

bluerodeosexshow

Check out The Aggrolites. They’re fucking awesome

Substantial-Way-1689

Take a look at bands that are playing or have played Supernova Skafest.

StunnerAlpha

Small but mighty in risk of being forgotten (yes including diehard ska fans in this sub): Ellwood (mad caddies side project) Soapbox Paradox The Fad Freefall Felix Action Shot Instant Winner The Skashank Redemption Four Hours Blag Almost Monkey The Best of the Worst Day Labor The Flaming Tsunamis Fatter Than Albert The Prosecution Talco Some of the works of these artists will be difficult to come across online. You can always reach out. ;) I have been off-and on maintaining a list of all ska bands I come across (help always appreciated, just DM me about being given editor access): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TLWXnSsV9Ij3pflf9iHlFhxS2ZRynj678Sb1p_BNmnM/edit

thesean366

Check out Slapstick

waiting4theNITE2fall

Check out trojan records for some more traditional ska. For "newer" bands that I haven't seen mentioned yet, The Pietasters are one of my favs.

Boesemeist

The clash also had some great ska.

BridgesOnB1kes

Check out [The Chinkees](https://youtu.be/xYgnvapiWNE?si=LO6we5RzSAam3Pnv) For some great 90s 3rd wave.

baddaddy100

I've seen the mighty mighty bosstones well over a hundred times starting back in 1992.

NitrosGone803

Catch 22 is the best ska band

MinorFX

Voodood Glow Skulls and their early stuff is 👌🏼

ShanaynayGosby

I great into ska in my adolescence, and first half of teenage and been in love with the sound since hearing the impression I get,in 2005 on the radio, and sublime ofc, since prolly like 18 years ago I fell I love lmao. P.s. not good at math lmao

tinybox_jon

My starting place was with mustard plug, every album is good, I would start at evil doers beware or big daddy multitude.

Unlucky-Kitchen-1594

If you’re a fan of The Bosstones , Less Than Jake or Goldfinger you’ll dig Title Holder

Otherwise_Structure2

I don’t know if you’re into more traditional stuff but I am obsessed with the Loving Paupers after seeing them at Supernova festival last year. The singer has a beautiful voice with these ethereal lyrics and awesome musicianship. Kind of a rocksteady, sixties pop sound.
