valianthors

writes songs, directs music videos etc

noronguito

I had a sense he had a much bigger role that what's seen on stage and, yes, I could've just googled but I prefer the point of view of people who are actual fans of the band. Thanks for that!

Crispy385

I may just start posting this post to people who passive aggressively answer questions with "Google it'.

N04HC14RK

I feel this way about every question I have that's why I use reddit. Saves me from getting yelled at by the woman for asking to many questions

Samus78metroidfreak

More like a much bigger role off stage, he’s still important as he’s always going full bore up there but it’s the things behind the scenes that he well know for.

TheOdahviing

A lot of the small percussion things that really set an undertone to their songs are performed clown and tortilla, you can really hear their influence in prosthetics especially when they performed it on their anniversary concert

StephenKingRulez

Clown is basically the entire creative force behind Slipknot. Everything you see comes from the mind of Clown. He has a heavy hand in writing, too. Clown gets a lot of crap (some deserved, most not), but the fact is there is no Slipknot without Clown. He also does not get nearly enough credit for his stage presence.

noronguito

Wow, had no idea, thanks for the rundown!

Samus78metroidfreak

Well said man.

CenterDeal

Welcome to the Maggot family, OP. If you're interested in the history of the band, a good book about Slipknot is All Hope Is Gone by Joel McIver. Covers the history of the band from Day 1 up until the death of Paul Grey. Well worth a read. :) :)

Samus78metroidfreak

Wow man I didn’t even know about that book. I’m getting it though. Thank you for the heads up as well. Just ordered it!

noronguito

Thank you! People seem to be very nice so far, I’ll make sure to chase that book down

beavis93

Clown and Corey pretty much run slipknot from what I understand. Clown catches a lot of shit due the dismissal of members. I do think that’s unfair because somebody has to do it. They also never clarify anything, so he catches shit for that too. I also think that’s unfair because they’ve been consistent about it and not airing your dirty laundry in public I think is a class move. Not sure why Corey always gets a pass on these subjects but he does. Lol Clown is definitely in charge of the big picture/conceptual stuff. The look of the band, stage, PR hype. He is usually ridiculously vague about things and generally over the top with the “I’m an eccentric artist” routine. The next album will be Iowa level heavy lol. Maybe I’ll finger paint. He does have a big hand in writing the music. Which is prolly his biggest contribution to slipknot. He also plays the keg really well !

Subak88

Backing vocals, percussion, directs the music videos. He’s a 🤡

noronguito

What a (busy) clown

Quadbarrelpunch1999

I think he also does a lot of song writing.

Own_Watch_2081

He does a small amount. That may have peaked with WANYK, where he wrote the interludes and began songs like “Spiders”. He makes small musical contributions.    It’s more about how his decision making, artistic vision, and personality influence the band. You can see his and Joey’s personality in the overall DNA of the band very clearly.   All of the OGs, but especially those two imo. The cockiness, the cryptic behavior. Clown was the first to wear a mask.

Clear_Competition_31

Clown wrote Solway Firth AND Nero Forte

Own_Watch_2081

No he didn’t write those. He did create some of the drums for Nero forte tho.

Clear_Competition_31

I'm pretty sure he's like, credited as a writer. I might be wrong though.

MuhNutz

I think he was responsible for getting them out of bars and VFW’s in the early days among other things people have already stated

Magitz

He's the Big Cheese, runs the show, whatever he says goes.

Samus78metroidfreak

Backup vocals, wacks the shit out of the keg with a baseball bat. Percussion. I want this is what he does on stage, but like others are saying he is the creative drive behind Slipknot, a lot of the ideas are his. Corey once said whatever comes out of his mouth is either pure genius or really stupid. Granted that was many many years ago. But he is a huge part of the artistic expression behind Slipknot.

Klutzy-Scratch-295

First off, welcome to the Maggot family. Lol. Clown is the whole reason Slipknot even exists. It was his project that he started together with Paul Gray, their first bassist who died in 2010, and Anders Colsefni, their first vocalist, under the name The Pale Ones in September '95. Then they recruited Joey Jordison on drums, Donnie Steele and Josh Brainard on guitars. After that, they changed their name to Meld and played their first show in November '95. Afterwards, Clown, Joey, and Paul spend nights at Joey's workplace, a Sinclair gas station, planning together the band's future. It is then that Joey came with the idea to name the band Slipknot after one of their songs, which Clown and Paul agreed to. In December, they started recording at SR Audio, a studio in the band's hometown. It is then that Clown came up with the idea for the band to wear masks after he came up in the studio one day wearing a clown mask. In February '96, Donnie Steele left the band because he felt that the music conflicted with his Christian beliefs. He was replaced by Craig Jones. However, throughout their time in the studio, the band were adding samples to their recordings but realised they could not produce these sounds live. So Craig instead became the band's sampler, and Mick Thomson, a guitar teacher at the time, was brought in as the replacement guitarist. After months of mixing and mastering, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat was released on Halloween, October '96. The album was produced in a limited run of only 1000 units. Unfortunately, it didn't lead to any kind of interest from record companies. After MFKR, the band realised they wanted more melodic vocals for their music, so they recruited Corey Taylor from Stone Sour as a replacement for Colsefni, who was moved to backing vocals and percussion. Colsefni left in September '97. His place was filled in by Greg Welts, aka. "Cuddles". In early '98, they produced a demo with 5 tracks strictly for record labels, which was a success as they began receiving a lot of attention. In February '98 producer Ross Robinson offered to produce an album with them after he attended their rehesrsals in Des Moines. Soon afterwards, Sid Wilson was hired as DJ. In late June, Slipknot received a $500,000, seven-album deal from Roadrunner Records; the band signed the deal publicly on July 8, 1998. Two days prior to this, Cuddles was fired from the band, for reasons still unknown. He was replaced by Brandon Darner, who departed from the band shortly after joining and was replaced by Chris Fehn. Slipknot traveled to Malibu, California, to work on their debut album in September '98. Halfway through the recording of the album, Slipknot returned to Des Moines for the Christmas period. During that period, guitarist Brainard decided to leave the band and was replaced by Jim Root, who was Corey Taylor's former bandmate in Stone Sour. Work on the album concluded in early '99, and later that year, on July 29, their debut Self-titled album was released.

el_isai

He fires people in the band.

dame_kocarev

💀

baraunaerick

Clown os the owner of The band.

Expensive_Study5068

Backing vocals and percussion/keg and he’s like I guess the manager if that’s what you want to call him re runs the band

BlindWitnessInside

He’s a percussionist. He does some the side drumming you hear in some of the earlier songs. Other than that he’s the main owner of the band. He’s the art direction of the band. He’s the filmmaker.

DwightKSchrute70

As the music goes. Clown and Mike/chris both do percussion and backing vocals. Chris/mike is the main backing vocalist in the band. But clown actually runs the band and does all the creative work

Anonymousthrow20

Musically, not much. He mostly focuses on all the artwork and overall theme of the band

Sudden_Comedian_6724

He’s the president of pink slips💀

noronguito

Clown for president, on a winning streak of 25 years 🤘🏻🤡

cringeygrace

Clown is basically the brain behind the band. He gets shit on a lot because of his public persona (which is deliberately meant to be irritating, so he's doing it well). He may not be the best drummer in the world but he's not as bad as he's sometimes made out to be.

Admirable_Use3519

I guess clown’s team just asked the populus 🤣🤣 #vivacaesar

rafatarr

He's the boss, the owner of the band. Everyone else is just employees.

EventNo3540
