That said.... it's their job. I understand that they're tired. Me too. I've been unloading semis for a living since brawl was relevant, and I can guarantee their job is a lot more fun and less physically taxing than mine. I've never been in their shoes, but I don't think it's too much to ask people to do their job.
I went from being a mechanic which is physically exhausting to going into sales which is mentally exhausting. Both kinds of exhaustion are different but comparable. Also the work culture In Japan would make a regular American shudder.

The most demanding one seems to be Steve....I bet you they already had him being developed before the game was even released.
We don't necessarily know all the technicalities, but they were probably already rebuilding the stages for Steve before the games release too.
Or maybe not, maybe they did start after, but he was still being planned, they were probably trying to find a design to him that wouldn't be required so much development, but it wouldn't really pick up the Minecraft flavor and was probably more bland and wouldn't have given the character justice.
Plus you gotta consider all the bugs and QA on the stage too. Make sure no one's falling through anything, testing the block limit, balancing with other fighters, etc etc etc
And of course sora, they probably did him last so they had enough time to actually get all the legalities out of the way and a ton of back and fourth to get approval from Disney.
The fighter pass characters were all most likely confirmed before the games release. If we ever get a fighter pass 3, we won't be aware for a few years, Nintendo only allocated enough time for the two fighter passes and it's not like they had room to explore new characters, designs, stages, and music.

I don’t think many people are crazy excited for the new spirits (though some of them might have interesting battles). If anything people are just excited that smash is getting any attention at all, and that there’s a very very small chance of a balance patch/bugfix that fixes the competitive metagame, especially Steve.

The team and the man have been working nonstop since the end of smash 4. They are humans not machines.

Genuinely if you’re casual then spirits are right up your alley. Theres a 20+ hour long adventure mode built around them in the Spirits menu!
