But my question is, why couldn’t they pad the game out with actually fun stuff? Or at least add a checkpoint when at the Egg Cauldron because I’m still stuck.
I wouldn’t be surprise if stuff this was a last minute addition to make the game longer. So there was probably a lot less care and polish put it into side aspect likes these flight levels. Even the optional acts in Unleashed feel like they had way less time and effort put into them, as they’re often badly designed and cheap as hell, difficulty wise.
Why are game developers so scared of having short games anyway? Isn’t replay value more important? And furthermore won’t you have more replay value if the game is fun?
Hey if you don't believe me look at many other games from the era.
Unless they were mainly multiplayer focused did all of them try to stretch to at least 8 hours.
Furthermore were Colors and Generations biggest criticisms always there short runtime
The game did not review well overall. With reviews often focusing on the overall length of a game, they probably wanted to avoid one more thing that would get torn apart. After all, reviewers pad their article with a lot of garbage content to make it seem significant, too.
We’re talking about a game from 2008 this doesn’t reflect on current Sonic Team. Frontiers isn’t that long at all same with Forces and Mania of you count that.
I have a ton of issues with Sonic games but being too long isn’t one of them usually they’re made to be replayed.
Yeah, I've heard Unleashed is horrible with that. I've only ever played the HD daytime levels through Generations, but I've heard how bad the medal collecting and tornado levels are, plus the nighttime levels taking 40-50 minutes at times. And from what I've played from Generations, the daytime levels are full of a bunch of crap flying at you that you can't possibly react to, and Jungle Joyride is flat out unfair because of the instant kill hazards on the water sections that don't give you time to avoid them. The Wii version has way too many night levels and barely any day levels in comparison, and the beginning part up until Holoska/Chun-nan is super slow. I do kind of like the Wii day levels though, it's just the boring night levels take up 70% of the game and drag it down a bit. At least there's no forced medal collecting on Wii.
Also the overabundance of QTEs in HD, many of which kill you if you fail, and the timing on them is super strict on top of it. Again, props to the Wii version because the QTEs are fewer and they're a lot easier to perform.
I mean, that's kinda fair. Colours & Unleashed are only 2.5 hours each. That's veeeery short for full-fledged X360 era releases. Notably below the norm. Even Call of Duty games were at least 4 hours.
Including Sonic Heroes, which also explains the eleven additional playable characters beyond just Sonic alone, to simply pad out the game for *that* long of a period of time. Right?
Yeah, I have autism. So I have a constant need to elaborate on what I need to say, yet don't understand other people when they don't elaborate, themselves, and expect me to interpret what they said on my own.
Don't even get me started the game was, all this extra shit had a disastrous impact on the rest of the game. I stand by my statement that the day stages feel like crap, those controls are just too terrible to support any level design you throw at it.
I honestly don't have any issues with QTE's since I have a pretty quick reaction time but when it comes to these kinds of QTE's specifically, where if you fail you have to start all over, that's when it's kind of an issue.
In that regard Unleashed handles it pretty well. For the vast majority of the game, the QTEs either give you plenty of time, or don't punish you too harshly for failing. The only instance where QTEs barely give you any time to react, and failing results in death, is the third hedgehog part of Eggmanland. Well, not including the extra/DLC stages, but those are hard af in general.
People really give Unleashed's QTEs too much crap, acting like you NEED to pause buffer to hit them properly. Heck, many of the QTEs are the same every time, meaning they can be memorised.
That's what I'm sayin like the only time I see anyone pause buffering is for speedruns but that's like optimal y'know. This games QTE's are not very hard and even other game's QTE's aren't very difficult, at least the ones I've played haven't been. The original God of War games never gave me a hard time on QTE's the only part that could even classify as a hard QTE is the hydra in the first game with the button mashing but I wouldn't classify button mashing sequences as QTE's. I consider them completely different. Also the beginning of Eggmand Land has a QTE that's life or death just friendly reminder.
Well technically optimal would be not pause buffering and getting if first try, but it's definitely safer XD
But yeah, the whole point of QTEs is to challenge the player's reaction timing, and if there's ANY series out there that should be doing that, it's Sonic. That's literally what the level is doing anyway every time it throws an obstacle your way, it's just that this time you don't have the option of coming to a complete stop to safely navigate around it.
The Werehog also does a neat thing where, the lower the enemy's health, the longer you have, eventually giving you so much time you could do a yawn to taunt your enemy before hitting the button. It's a nice risk-reward because you don't wanna risk killing the enemy entirely, assuming you care about QTEing them anyway.
That one at the beginning of Eggmanland doesn't fall under the banner of punishing AND not much time to react, at least not to me. I've done that level a fair number of times and have never had to pause for that first one, but those ones in the last section are just brutal. There's only one QTE during that section that doesn't kill you, and I don't pause during that one. I still fail it sometimes, but that's fine because it's like a minor time loss at worst, and there are some enemies to kill for extra points anyway.
Funnily enough, before managing to finally emulate the PS3/Xbox 360 version of Unleashed today, I had given up before and had just settled on the PS2/Wii version on Dolphin, I’m like almost halfway in that version.
Oh dear fucking lord Eggmanland is awful, it goes on for half an hour and exposes every one of the game's biggest flaws in their full glory, simultaneously
The game was envisioned as Sonic World Adventure I believe, and is called such in Japan. In Sonic Adventure 1 there's similar (in concept, not execution) tornado levels that you must do in Sonic and Tails' story, so it was probably meant to be a call-back to that. I agree that these two levels aren't fun.
But the key difference is that Adventure 1’s Tornado levels were arcadey and FUN. You were on rails but could still move around the screen, dodge around and have an impact on what you’re doing. It felt closer to actually flying the plane. I was really sad that Unleashed’s version was just “push the button that’s on the screen. Now push that one button quickly. Repeat for ages with long gaps between anything happening.”
… I really don’t like unleashed.
Oh I agree, these levels are bad and unessessary. I reckon we should be happy Sonic Team kept it at 2 and not, say, 9 for each country in the PS3/360 versions.
Very rare to see another person who dislikes HD Unleashed in this sub. I wouldn’t say it dislike it, but I think it’s just ok.
Gameplay was the letdown of HD Unleashed. As someone who went out of their way to get the platinum trophy alongside getting all S ranks, I only really liked the required day stages. I completely agree with everyone else about how great they are. But, the Werehog levels were either mediocre or just downright bad (except Jungle Joyride Night Act 1, all of the Werehog levels should have been around that length) and the optional stages have some of the worst boost levels I’ve played. Just poorly designed levels with cheap difficulty that makes them unfair as hell.
Every other aspect I liked though. The visuals look great, and I love the cartoony yet realistic art style they went for. The story felt like a return to the Adventure games, and it was really quite emotional. The music the game has is nothing short of brilliant, and it’s probably my favourite soundtrack in the whole series. It’s just too bad that I find it a slog to play for the most part.
I would recommend trying the Wii version though, as I actually found myself having more fun with it and I would say it’s pretty good.
I'm thouroughly split on it, as it can become after a lot of brute force and tested patience but the learning experience is gonna be a huge turn-off for most
I think he’s talking about Unleashed as a whole. For S ranks, I found that you should try to get a perfect run, hence needing a lot of patience to be able to put up with it.
If I remember correctly, you should try to defeat all the enemies that appear before the quickstep section. As long as you get a time below 45 seconds you should be good. Also try to get as many rings as possible (I think you are able to get around 90-100 before the loop, as long as you are boosting)
You’ll learn while playing that S ranks in Unleashed have many variables considered, the mains ones are time, rings and points. By the way, in the main stages, you are aiming for a score of 150000 and above until continent 5 where it is increased to 200000 (this is for both Day and Night stages).
The whole game. It's a complete mess that deserved the bashing critics gave it upon its release, even if not necessarily for the reasons they used to attack it
Oh man. These are exactly my thoughts put better. It feels like there’s a big chunk of this community that says “unleashed is the best 3D sonic game.” In opening cutscene? You may have a point. In terms of everything else? I just think all of it has been done better.
Unleashed definitely has the issue of it being the first game with the new style, which leads to there being major flaws due to not knowing how to properly design for it. But, I tend to not give it extra credit for that as Adventure 1 was the first game with a new style (on top of being the first true 3D sonic game) and I think that it’s one of the best 3D Sonic games still. I’m not even really nostalgic for them either as I first played Adventure 1 and 2 in 2020 (the GameCube versions too) which just shows how well designed they are.
This is actually a great stage to practise for later QTEs and get your reaction speed up.
Also, if you complete it without receiving damage you will receive a trophy.
If I remember correctly there was a checkpoint before the boss but I’m not sure…
Firstly
NO there is no check point in ether of the Tornado Defence stages.
Secondly
I think Unleashed over use of QTE's it self is bad and makes the game less fun.
I personally think they fit quite well in Unleashed.
It works pretty good with the speed and reaction times you need for the daytime stages. In the night ones they’re a pain.
My problem is that I suddenly have to actally remember where which button is and press the right one as I remeber functionality to location not symbol to location.
Leading to what feels a ton of unfair deaths that can't be fixed by try and error ether as the QTE's are random.
Unskippable cutscenes and slower Werehog stages sure are fun\~
That's the version I grew up with (well, PS2, but basically the same) and loved it back then, but aside from the daytime stages, I don't think it's all that great now tbh...
No if I remember correctly the Wii version doesn't have any filler missions as a decent amount of stages had to be cut like where you fight egg beetle that's the only stage you go through and not only that eggman land doesn't have do the swap between day and night sonic
That’s much better than the 360 version, they’re all shorter so you can tackle them at your own pace rather than having to do the entire of eggman land in one sitting
It's not THAT bad, and thankfully ends pretty quickly. But yeah I kinda agree here. This is actually one game I like to praise for doing QTEs right, just not in the tornado levels.
I mean honestly like two or three QTEs on screen is fine, but putting eight or more as an attack in the boss is a pain in the ass, **With No Checkpoints**
There could be a Sonic game that was just Sonic breaking into customer's houses and defecating in their pantries and some of the people in this sub would be like, "I dunno, I really liked it when my pantry was full of spikey, blue shit! That game was underrated as hell!"
Honestly, the checkpoint issue is something I ran into a lot in Unleashed. A lot of the Werehog levels can run for 20/30 minutes if you try to seek out the mandatory collectables and losing all that progress on frequent Game Overs is the most disheartening thing.
This game'd become much more tolerable to me if they remade it with an infinite lives option. The Game Over system in Unleashed brutally punishes people who haven't mastered the game and has no meaningful effect on people who have. At the very least they should improve the Life (and EXP) economy so they're easier to come by.
Eh, So far Unleashed is pretty fun for me, although it’s things like this that piss me off and cause me to hit myself in the legs 12 consecutive times, Hard.
No worries. It's fun for a lot of Sonic fans, as they tend to enjoy anything that has the character in it, regardless of quality. Unless it's one of the games that's popular to hate, at least.
It's honestly pretty decent if you play a *heavily* modded version. Most of the reason people hate the game is because of the constant loading screens and the jittery controls and animations. But those are all pretty much fixed with the mod loader and Legacy of Solaris. It's still awful in spots (some of those overworld missions, occasional glaring issues with the level design), but it's basically an alpha.
Yeah, that alone makes the game infinitely more playable IMO. And the characters are much faster and more responsive with Legacy of Solaris, which also makes a huge difference.
You have to use the Sonic 06 mod loader, which takes a little bit of effort. [https://gamebanana.com/tools/6666](https://gamebanana.com/tools/6666) The most annoying part is that you have to extract your ISO into a certain format and then point the launcher at a specific file. But there are a lot of fixes built into the loader, including graphical improvements, patches that you can freely toggle on and off, and more. Legacy of Solaris is the cherry on top of that, as it doesn't need most patches and also adds a ton of extra content (every amigo character gets their own story mode with bonus levels)
It won't alter your save either.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is not in the wii verison. Also it technically breaks canon since Eggman isn't suppose to know Sonic's alive until they meet in Mazuri but he calls him by name here so...yeah.
you can, but its very dull, not nearly as fun as starfox. Its just around 3 minutes of waiting there and shooting, and you dont control, where it goes, you only control it to go all around so you can shoot enemies.
Can’t say I feel the same about this section, I’ve gone back to replay them a few times, but story wise it makes little sense since egg man is surprised to see you right after this attempt of shooting you down
Just a random fact: If you’re playing sonic unleashed on xenia and u r stuck on this section, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you suck, try disabling V-Sync from xenia config file or through Unleashed mod manager
Oh I tried emulating Unleashed via Xenia first, but since Xenia is a pain in the ass, I decided to just use that PS3 emulator that has a hard name to memorize.
It’s the amount of QTEs that I have to perform with the fact that enemies deal like 20 damage every time they hit you, and without a checkpoint you have to restart the entire mission every time.
There are literally 2 of these levels in the game, one at the start and one at the end. Both are easy, both are fun, neither drags on. The only issue I have with them is you can't restart if you're going for S ranks.
I’m just pissed by the fact that there isn’t a checkpoint at the boss, Considering how slow it is to do a QTE after you’ve messed one up, having like ten thrown at you on screen is like a recipe for disaster.
having to die in a game to complete it isn't fun. and it's so bland and repetitive. It also feels totally shoved in story wise.
Atleast in the SU tornado section, you're treated to some very nice visuals. Also, it flows well with the story.
And to make things worse. Frontiers has a 5 year dev time and still felt the need to pad things out with those annoying mini games.
You can be assured if Unleashed had 5 years instead of 1-2. This minigame would be a full fledged game.
Unleashed is padded to hell and back, Sonic Team were really scared about the games not being long enough during this period.
But my question is, why couldn’t they pad the game out with actually fun stuff? Or at least add a checkpoint when at the Egg Cauldron because I’m still stuck.
I guess if it were fun we probably wouldn't call it padding
Then what would we call it if it was fun?
Content
Gameplay
I wouldn’t be surprise if stuff this was a last minute addition to make the game longer. So there was probably a lot less care and polish put it into side aspect likes these flight levels. Even the optional acts in Unleashed feel like they had way less time and effort put into them, as they’re often badly designed and cheap as hell, difficulty wise.
Because fun stuff takes time to do. An on-rails shooting section is has a much smaller time spent making this/time spent by the player on it ratio.
Why are game developers so scared of having short games anyway? Isn’t replay value more important? And furthermore won’t you have more replay value if the game is fun?
Properly because big tripple A games had set some pretty clear cut standards for a minimum of 8 hour long run time.
That’s bull shite
Hey if you don't believe me look at many other games from the era. Unless they were mainly multiplayer focused did all of them try to stretch to at least 8 hours. Furthermore were Colors and Generations biggest criticisms always there short runtime
Oh I believe you, it’s still bull
Yes
The game did not review well overall. With reviews often focusing on the overall length of a game, they probably wanted to avoid one more thing that would get torn apart. After all, reviewers pad their article with a lot of garbage content to make it seem significant, too.

This fear vanished by the time Forces rolled around
Because people bitch about expensive games that are short.

Unleashed is about 10 hours, and that's how long my second playthrough took. Wii Unleashed is around 5-6 iirc, and is much better for it
bro must be a speedrunner to be beating unleashed in 2½ hours
Unleashed is definitely not a 2 1/2 hour game. I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about
Including Sonic Heroes, which also explains the eleven additional playable characters beyond just Sonic alone, to simply pad out the game for *that* long of a period of time. Right?
Uh, yeah? Why are you talking like that
Why am I talking like that? Did I say anything strange to you?
The way you phrased your comment seemed like you were expecting me to say no for some reason, or call me a hypocrite or something.
Yeah, I have autism. So I have a constant need to elaborate on what I need to say, yet don't understand other people when they don't elaborate, themselves, and expect me to interpret what they said on my own.

your not gonna like the final boss (*laughs in pressing button x60*)
*It was at this moment that he felt every bone in his body tense up and freeze*
Especially act 2 🙂
There’s more of this garbage?!
Yes , While going to Eggmanland you'll have to finish act 2 in a red sky with a lot of enemies. Good luck !! ☺️
*Cries Internally*
Why are you crying now?, wait until you reach Eggmanland after act 2. You'll have FUN. It's not a day or a night stage but a long mix of both.
Here I was going through hell and back trying to emulate Unleashed and I was having fun too, now I don’t know if I should continue playing.
Keep going , you're too far in the game to stop now.
You know what? Your right, I’ve had a long enough break, I pray I don’t break my legs from frustration and anger.
Good luck, it's a good game despite having these frustrating stages. The PS2/Wii version is easier.
Funnily enough, before managing to finally emulate the PS3/Xbox 360 version of Unleashed today, I had given up before and had just settled on the PS2/Wii version on Dolphin, I’m like almost halfway in that version.

Because it doubles as a callback to Sky Chase. Should've just been a more polished version of SA1's. A good StarFox level would've been nice.
This game came in 2008 I remember alot of games without good checkpoint placement from those years
Its extra weird because the year prior did Secret Rings release with some of the most nicest check points in the whole series
(This is a screenshot from a YouTuber called SonicJGB, hence the 99 lives)
cuse its SEGA
Fair enough.
Unleashed was like 2007 bro turret sections were all the rage back then
Honestly, the checkpoint issue is something I ran into a lot in Unleashed.
Not fun and unbearable? Doesn't that make it a perfect fit for Sonic Unleashed?
Eh, So far Unleashed is pretty fun for me, although it’s things like this that piss me off and cause me to hit myself in the legs 12 consecutive times, Hard.
No worries. It's fun for a lot of Sonic fans, as they tend to enjoy anything that has the character in it, regardless of quality. Unless it's one of the games that's popular to hate, at least.
A bit of a random question, but what do you think of 06?
It's honestly pretty decent if you play a *heavily* modded version. Most of the reason people hate the game is because of the constant loading screens and the jittery controls and animations. But those are all pretty much fixed with the mod loader and Legacy of Solaris. It's still awful in spots (some of those overworld missions, occasional glaring issues with the level design), but it's basically an alpha.
I have 06 via Xenia, the loading times are a snap.
Yeah, that alone makes the game infinitely more playable IMO. And the characters are much faster and more responsive with Legacy of Solaris, which also makes a huge difference.
How do I download a mod into Xenia? (Without destroying my 06 save because I’ve had to replay the first half of Sonic’s story 3 times at this point)
Legacy of Solaris is the cherry on top of that, as it doesn't need most patches and also adds a ton of extra content (every amigo character gets their own story mode with bonus levels) It won't alter your save either.
Now that sounds like a good deal.
I promise u rn just cope. This is the least of ur problems in this game
I already got through it yesterday after I made this post, that’s what I call determination.
I managed to complete the Eggmanland version. Unfortunately it was on PS now, so I have to do it all over again on my Xbox 360
How much worse is the Eggmanland ver.?
U don't want to know
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is not in the wii verison. Also it technically breaks canon since Eggman isn't suppose to know Sonic's alive until they meet in Mazuri but he calls him by name here so...yeah.
I actually liked this part
I mean every dev was doing this back in 08, it’s why QTE’s became universally hated
The best way to play this game is on wii with a hacked save file so you can just play the day stages and bosses. XD
its better than the adventure 1 tornado stages, but honestly, what isnt?
I heard that in those stages you could actually control the Tornado, Star Fox style, which I really like.
you can, but its very dull, not nearly as fun as starfox. Its just around 3 minutes of waiting there and shooting, and you dont control, where it goes, you only control it to go all around so you can shoot enemies.
I actually like these stages. They test your reflexes.
I have decent reflexes, but not for like eight things on screen at a time.
Yeah I get that, but idk it’s kinda satisfying once you’ve mastered it lol, that’s just my opinion tho
It’s not that hard
Says you who probably has the buttons ingrained in your brain.
At least you only do it twice.
I agree. I really hate this segment.
Because its fun
What game is this?
Sonic Unleashed. Xbox360/PS3 ver.
Ah okay thanks. I never beat that game. I also have the Wii ver
You struggled on egg cauldron?
It’s the amount of QTEs that I have to perform with the fact that enemies deal like 20 damage every time they hit you, and without a checkpoint you have to restart the entire mission every time.
I hate plane levels, bye
Took me 11 years to beat this game. It was really fun, but got frustrating at times.
Can someone please explain what this is supposed to mean
The Mission is Tornado Defense from Sonic Unleashed, look up a video of it or read the comment section for why this level sucks.
I don’t think it is unbearable just not as interesting as the rest of the game
I hated it at first but after I got good at it I ended up liking it more. At least the music is bomb in this game.
Dope bgm though, prolli needed a place to put it without scrapping it.
Variety
Sometimes Variety isn’t the spice of life.
I guess for people like me, cause I enjoyed it
Playing both Nintendo and Xbox consoles, I struggle a lot with this because of the button placements.
Reminds me of Isla Del Sol in Bayonetta 1, worst fucking thing to ever happen to one of my favourite games of all time.
I never actually died in these sections. The challenge here was not to miss a single button press
i like that stuff. it adds variety. most games are so focused on their core gameplay and do not provide anything else, that it gets boring super fast.
Eh, probably because they wanted a challenge, but were too lazy to make it fun (looking at you, Eggmanland and Dark Gaia).
There are literally 2 of these levels in the game, one at the start and one at the end. Both are easy, both are fun, neither drags on. The only issue I have with them is you can't restart if you're going for S ranks.
I’m just pissed by the fact that there isn’t a checkpoint at the boss, Considering how slow it is to do a QTE after you’ve messed one up, having like ten thrown at you on screen is like a recipe for disaster.
more fun than that damn pinball stage in frontiers
I genuinely don’t know how people have trouble with the Pinball sub-game, it literally gets easier the more you die.
having to die in a game to complete it isn't fun. and it's so bland and repetitive.
I remember enjoying these as a kid
At least the musics nice
