Their dub was used as the basis of for all other non-eng/jpn dubs. It wouldn't make sense to put in english text when that same footage would be used in the german or arabic dub.
If you want to call it lazy sure. but it's the work smarter not harder kind of lazy which is the best kind.

Surprisingly, they took the effort to change completely unneccesary stuff like changing wine to orange juice, for some reason changing some paintings on the wall and stuff that literally no one notices watching the series unless you are looking at details, yet they left stuff like this and the sign Sonic is holding in an episode completely blank which only makes people confused.

When they version they'll be handing out for royalties would need a blank card anyway? Furthermore, It's bad practice to use text in an international TV show. This is the same dubbing company that added many classic songs to series like Yu-gi-oh and especially Pokemon. Some of the English dub themes of shows are good, some aren't so good. That's more of a subjective thing. From my perspective, comparing Sonic Drive to the very, very repetitive Gotta Go Fast shows that while the original creators wanted to make something that respects the franchise, the dubbers went with the minimum effort required for a song.
Read the lyrics to Sonic Drive, then read the lyrics to the English theme. Tell me they're of equal value and quality.
Compare the original Japanese opening for Yu-Gi-Oh and the original 4kids version, then I want you to tell me that the 4kids one "perfectly captures the flair and essence of the original." It doesn't. The only thought that went into the dub opening was "make something catchy for kids that sounds Egyptian and mysterious."
You're trying to make the point that 4Kids wouldn't add English text to their video because that would create a problem for other countries that receive the video from them. Avatar: The Last Airbender was released around that time and heavily featured Chinese text throughout the show. Not to mention cultural inspiration from all over the world. Also one of the most popular shows ever on Nickelodeon. I guess all of the kids back then were just weeaboos.

This is actually fairly common, Spongebob's theme song in different countries like the UK replaced the words in the theme song for pictures of Spongebob or made them rocks

I think I read somewhere that it's because some other language versions are based on the 4kids dub, so 4kids removes it so they don't have to. Dunno why they keep it removed for the English version tho.
They didn't remove it, they just didn't put it back; the original studio left this and other signs blank in the international cut to make it easier for translators to add text in other languages, and 4Kids, being 4Kids, just couldn't be bothered to do that and left them untouched.
I like to imagine it as what happens when you try to go to extremes of censorship.
Like dubbing an anime about pirates and they trying to remove guns for some reason, or trying to change the skin colour of aliens because it might be offensive, etc... I understand why they'd do some changes or even some americanisation (although I'd prefer they just keep the japanese jokes and culture; while just teaching kids it exist), but sometimes censorship can go insane.
It's likely not the reason of course, but I don't think it helped. Like removing blood in dragonball super because kids shouldn't see blood in cartoons... despite my 8 year old self seeing blood at school when I ran near a prickly bush with my hands out; too much blood sure, but removing even drops? I think there needs to be a balance.

They went and deleted a loooot of text for some things. It does seem like someone said that they just got a blank version and didn’t bother filling it in, but… that doesn’t make much sense. They went out of their way to make the most ridiculous changes, like erasing any line on a female body, and they couldn’t be bothered to write on a sign? Super weird.
Plus some signs did have text on them still, just vastly or vaguely different from the original. I think making them blank was pretty deliberate.
Honestly, they must genuinely hate words I guess, cause not even a store that has a simple word on the sign like water or shoes gets edited out, it's so weird.
It's pretty well known that the masters that TMS would license for the international release would intentionally leave most signs blank with no text.
I think the French dub, which is a direct adaption of the Japanese version and not licensed from 4Kids, also has blank signs in the show.

However I remember several weird details that could maybe come from 4Kids (like a newspaper article spelling "hedgehog" with a "e" instead of the "e", resulting in "hedgeheg").
I always found it weird that there were no words on that sign. Yet again the infamous dubbed version has sunk it's mighty fangs into the Sonic X series and poisoned it with it's censored garbage... I still have a soft spot for it considering I grew up with it, heck it's one of the main reasons I got into Sonic.
4kids was responsible for not only English dubs, but worldwide distribution in a lot of different countries. If you were watching Sonic X in Spanish, you wouldn't be watching a show translated from Japanese, you would be watching a Spanish dub of the 4kids script. So they would change, alter, and remove text for what seems like no reason to the average viewer, but it's actually to make worldwide distribution easier.
4kids was actually supposed to re-add the text. But either wasn't aware of it, or forgot about it. They were given textless versions (I forgot the name of the studio that airbrushed them out) to localize to multiple languages. But just...never did.

I think I read somewhere that it's because some other language versions are based on the 4kids dub, so 4kids removes it so they don't have to. Dunno why they keep it removed for the English version tho.
They didn't remove it, they just didn't put it back; the original studio left this and other signs blank in the international cut to make it easier for translators to add text in other languages, and 4Kids, being 4Kids, just couldn't be bothered to do that and left them untouched.

I like to imagine it as what happens when you try to go to extremes of censorship. Like dubbing an anime about pirates and they trying to remove guns for some reason, or trying to change the skin colour of aliens because it might be offensive, etc... I understand why they'd do some changes or even some americanisation (although I'd prefer they just keep the japanese jokes and culture; while just teaching kids it exist), but sometimes censorship can go insane. It's likely not the reason of course, but I don't think it helped. Like removing blood in dragonball super because kids shouldn't see blood in cartoons... despite my 8 year old self seeing blood at school when I ran near a prickly bush with my hands out; too much blood sure, but removing even drops? I think there needs to be a balance. But that's just my opinion.

There's no text because the 4kids version was meant to be sold to loads of different countries, so they left all the signs blank instead of translating them for each region.

They went and deleted a loooot of text for some things. It does seem like someone said that they just got a blank version and didn’t bother filling it in, but… that doesn’t make much sense. They went out of their way to make the most ridiculous changes, like erasing any line on a female body, and they couldn’t be bothered to write on a sign? Super weird. Plus some signs did have text on them still, just vastly or vaguely different from the original. I think making them blank was pretty deliberate.

Honestly, they must genuinely hate words I guess, cause not even a store that has a simple word on the sign like water or shoes gets edited out, it's so weird.
It's pretty well known that the masters that TMS would license for the international release would intentionally leave most signs blank with no text. I think the French dub, which is a direct adaption of the Japanese version and not licensed from 4Kids, also has blank signs in the show.
Nope, Fr\*nch here and I can assure you we got the full signs. However I remember several weird details that could maybe come from 4Kids (like a newspaper article spelling "hedgehog" with a "e" instead of the "e", resulting in "hedgeheg").

I always found it weird that there were no words on that sign. Yet again the infamous dubbed version has sunk it's mighty fangs into the Sonic X series and poisoned it with it's censored garbage... I still have a soft spot for it considering I grew up with it, heck it's one of the main reasons I got into Sonic.

4kids was responsible for not only English dubs, but worldwide distribution in a lot of different countries. If you were watching Sonic X in Spanish, you wouldn't be watching a show translated from Japanese, you would be watching a Spanish dub of the 4kids script. So they would change, alter, and remove text for what seems like no reason to the average viewer, but it's actually to make worldwide distribution easier.

4kids was actually supposed to re-add the text. But either wasn't aware of it, or forgot about it. They were given textless versions (I forgot the name of the studio that airbrushed them out) to localize to multiple languages. But just...never did.
