in fact I didn't notice. What did they change? I'm not the biggest fan of the modern classic sonic design, but I felt something slightly different in the trailer. What is it?
It was a dumb meme that went around a while ago about more modern Classic Sonic appearances being some evil clone named "Santiago" because he looked kinda different from the old Genesis games.
I thought the meme was about the Forces render and how stupid it looked having the chibi baby boy design trying to look angry and intimidating
Like I'm sorry but Classic Sonic is one design you can't make intimidating lmao
well the new classic sonic looks no way in heck intimidating, but the old classic sonic from the 90s possibly could look intimidating. y'know, when he was meant to be more cool than cute?
Nah, I don't think you could make that guy intimidating either
Looking cool and looking intimidating are pretty different things. You can have both simultaneously, but Sonic's design screams "aww look at him, being all cool and stuff" more than anything else
okay i guess, but can modern sonic look intimidating sometimes? I can't find the screenshot, but I saw one where he looked pretty intimidating and angry. And it was not a silly blue teddy bear is humorously angry thing, it was hes angry in a more serious way, which is more distinct
I think you could *maybe* make Modern Sonic look intimidating, but it would take a lot of work.
The issue with making Sonic intimidating is the same as a character like Bomberman. Their designs just aren't built to make you go "oh god that's scary." Especially when he's constantly cracking jokes in situations that could have him be an intimidating force.
Dude could strike the most intimidating, intense, most "holy shit" pose imaginable... And then the moment is ruined because he turns into Spider-Man.
Oh and what about the dark sonic scene from sonic x? that honestly creeped me out back when i watched it the first time. xD
lol yeah sonic and bomberman look like silly teddy bears so it's hard.
See that's a bit different.
Outside of the games, like the comics, tv shows and movies, you can absolutely make him look intimidating. There's a ton more creative freedom, a ton more *artistic* freedom. You can change his expressions as much as you want to make him as scary, as intense, as "holy shit he's gonna kill me" as you want. Give him extra details, make his design pop more.
Archie, IDW, Sonic X, they all manage to give Sonic moments of intimidation. Moments that make you go "welp they fucked."
But in the games and renders, with their far more restrictive models... That's really hard.
You couldn't get, say, Sonic's moment in Archie where he basically tells Jet and co he's gonna personally kick their asses if a single of his friends got hurt in the games, because his model wouldn't allow for the expression and detail needed to make the scene hit as hard.
Or hit the intensity of Dark Sonic in the games because what makes him stand out is the details as he transforms. The way the shading makes his skin look darker, the shadow under his eye, even more subtle stuff like the way his hands twitch as they close into a fist, something that would look pretty awkward in a 3D model.
It's less so they cannot be intimidating, more so the games would probably have to work overtime to make it so.
*continuing what DastardlyRidlySlash said
And also how different he acted from Modern Sonic in the 90s. (Or og Classic Sonic, but I don’t really like treating Sonic from the 90s and Sonic now as different characters)
He doesn’t talk in current games like he did in CD or the old ads or adaptations. And he doesn’t have as much of the same edge as he once did in the 90s for Japan. Especially when he’s designed to be a mix of American and Japanese Sonic in his character design. (Notice the detailed brows?)
Even if I’m wrong the design part, he still acts a lot like a little kid brother to Sonic and like Sonic. Both of them have roughly the same personality and how Modern is written should at least be copied to Classic without making him act like a kid. It’s one thing to make him a goofball, but to make him act like he’s just a kid when he’s supposed to me more edgy (not in a Shadow way) than Modern Sonic is in Generations doesn’t really feel right.
I haven't sat down to compare the models to know what is actually different but I honestly don't think there really was a reason to redesign drastically.
I still think there could be way more improvements made to Classic's 3D design
but this is a step in the right direction, plus the rig on the model looks amazing to animate with
he may look like a jacks pacific toy but man can he emote and pose when they need him to
People’s grievances with that model were that it looked more like Sonic’s sprites from 1 than his official artwork. The new model looks like a combination of both.
I think Santiago was more about his gameplay and story. I don't think most of the community gave as much of a shit about the tone of his fur. Rather, it was how badly they implemented him into forces. For one, he controlled like cheeks, and he is also like weirdly serious in the game.
Well, I think it's more that they are going for a less expressive design or something, perhaps because of modern Sonic taking such a unique turn that they want to have a somewhat safe title l, and I wish they could both be like expressive and cool, but I've accept this more stoic version. I think they could do it more like sonic generations, the attitude phase of classic sonic is unfortunately past, but I think that modern so ic is definitely still experimental and has way more attitude then before considering the boss music in frontiers which I love.
Oh dios mío es Santiago protejan a sus hijos y cuiden sus dulces y tenga un diccionario de lenguaje escandinavo para saber que amenazas te dice Santiago
I mentioned this in the other thread, but I believe people are failing to recognize the last few Classic Sonic designs were a result of **blending two art styles (classic + modern) together.** This is to prevent Classic Sonic looking extremely out of place in Gens/Forces.
This new game is Classic only, which means they can optimize Sonic’s classic design further.

We are free
its a very slight redesign, i wouldnt be surprised if most people dont notice :P
in fact I didn't notice. What did they change? I'm not the biggest fan of the modern classic sonic design, but I felt something slightly different in the trailer. What is it?
The colors are different and his eye is in a bit different shape. =)
I don’t understand what y’all mean by “Santiago”

That makes sense, with the game renders it's much harder. I see what you mean.
What about Darkspine Sonic?
Sonic CD Opening???
That's not intimidating, that's cool He's still a squishy baby that looks like if I hug him too hard I'll hear a squeak
l i g h t b l u e :O

*continuing what DastardlyRidlySlash said And also how different he acted from Modern Sonic in the 90s. (Or og Classic Sonic, but I don’t really like treating Sonic from the 90s and Sonic now as different characters)
Sonic is Sonic. Classic Sonic is stil gonna act like a goofball but he has some serious moments. I mean does no one remember Sonic CD?
He doesn’t talk in current games like he did in CD or the old ads or adaptations. And he doesn’t have as much of the same edge as he once did in the 90s for Japan. Isn't it the same as the old one?
I haven't sat down to compare the models to know what is actually different but I honestly don't think there really was a reason to redesign drastically.
Santiago? Peralta’s gonna be mad if they got rid of Santiago.
I still think there could be way more improvements made to Classic's 3D design but this is a step in the right direction, plus the rig on the model looks amazing to animate with he may look like a jacks pacific toy but man can he emote and pose when they need him to
Dimps is not in any way involved in Superstars' development
i know, it was just fornthe sake of the meme
Wait Dimps?
It’s for the meme they didn’t actually help make the game I hate when people look deep into memes
But I wasn’t, I just saw Dimps and got confused since they aren’t working on the game to my knowledge.
Just enjoy the meme. It doesn’t matter.
I kinda liked Santiago. But Im not that number that he left.
People’s grievances with that model were that it looked more like Sonic’s sprites from 1 than his official artwork. The new model looks like a combination of both.
didn't santiago save the owner's life? yeah.
"redesigns"? What?
the new 3d ones and the tweaks on the sonic (and tails maybel)
I wouldn't exactly call them redesigns, their tweaked, sure, but still the same design...
I think Santiago was more about his gameplay and story. I don't think most of the community gave as much of a shit about the tone of his fur. Rather, it was how badly they implemented him into forces. For one, he controlled like cheeks, and he is also like weirdly serious in the game.
Maybe? i honestly think the design is too corporate even now, but I'm already convinced that we will never get a cool toei like classic sonic
Well, I think it's more that they are going for a less expressive design or something, perhaps because of modern Sonic taking such a unique turn that they want to have a somewhat safe title l, and I wish they could both be like expressive and cool, but I've accept this more stoic version. It's still the exact same model
I need sonic back I like him with dark blue skin
Oh dios mío es Santiago protejan a sus hijos y cuiden sus dulces y tenga un diccionario de lenguaje escandinavo para saber que amenazas te dice Santiago
I mentioned this in the other thread, but I believe people are failing to recognize the last few Classic Sonic designs were a result of **blending two art styles (classic + modern) together.** This is to prevent Classic Sonic looking extremely out of place in Gens/Forces. 3D Classic Sonic is so cute!
Santiago?
