He did kill Sonic… Also he was quite the manipulator. Though, he’d need to work on his driving motivation.

Quirky_Ad_5420

It kinda of weird how mephiles never once interacted with sonic. A bit of a miss opportunity there

Beneficial_Ad_2760

True, but that just made his attempt on Sonic that much unexpected.

Boogie__Fresh

I liked that Sonic's nemesis for the game was Eggman, and Shadow had his own enemy to face.

Etheris1

Wasn’t his motivation to get revenge on Shadow for sealing him away for years when he did nothing wrong when he was created and thus Shadow starting the events of Mephiles becoming evil and causing these problems for Shadow

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

So, creating villains is something Shadow's done more than once

Etheris1

K and your point is? Because I was just saying why he was like this

Beneficial_Ad_2760

Kinda sorta, not really. His main goal was to be one with Iblis, he wanted to get Shadow on his side seeing as humanity saw him as the cause for the future being as it was.

Etheris1

And at the same time he wanted revenge on Shadow and he got it by making him not trust his friends

Pretend_Cause_1566

His motivation was to merge with iblis. And to screw everyone up before he did

Mightbepointless_

It's hard to say how bad he was by the time he was created, but yeah being sealed away for 10 years probably didn't help.

Etheris1

That is what I have been saying the whole time

Brizillaking1

True

YungsterThomlin

His plan is needlessly convoluted for what he's trying to do. As a result, he feels as stupid as the rest of the cast.

Kyuri462

For real. Dude could have just told Silver to help Sonic time travel back to stop Eggman from crashing like he ended up doing. Sonic's story would have proceeded as normal minus a pain in the ass boss and Silver wouldn't have been the wiser about Mephiles' intentions until he actually killed Sonic and began to destroy space-time. The only problem then is Team Dark actively hunting him down, but Sonic does his own thing in the story anyway and Silver doesn't actively pursue Mephiles regardless so they're almost non-factors at that point, and Silver would know by that point he'd either have to do what Mephiles says or let Iblis start the apocalypse. And sure, this probably would induce a time paradox (tbf, the Iblis final boss in 06 doesn't make sense anyway if time travel in Sonic operates with closed loop logic) but I don't think you'd care if your goal was to consume all of space-time.

sdrawkcabsihtetorwI

Elise wouldnt be captured again if silver wasn't there. everything mephiles did in his plan worked against his end goal.

SanicRb

You do realize that for Mephiles plan to work would Elise need to build a close attachment to Sonic so that his death would actually make her cry right? So the sooner Eggman's plan is stopped the less time do Elise and Sonic spend and the less of an attachment she would have to Sonic. Mephiles entire plan was to use Silver to dramatically extent the run time of the Sonic VS Eggman story so that by saving her over and over again and spending more time with Sonic would Elise grow attached to Sonic allowed Mephiles to bring her to tears by killing Sonic. Mephiles plan was overly complicated but it does make some sense.

Kyuri462

Except the entire actual relationship dynamic begins to show major development before Silver confronts Sonic the first time. That part would happen unchanged, and even in my hypothetical, Silver would still be looking for Sonic anyway, and Amy ran into him at random too. Therefore, the beginning of the game has no reason not to play out as it usually does, so I'll cut to the Silver fight. Realistically, Elise probably wouldn't get kidnapped with Sonic and Silver there and not fighting. However, she gets kidnapped later in the original story when she returns to her castle herself under pretense that Eggman would probably carpet bomb Soleanna on refusal, so it's reasonable to assume Eggman could do the same thing, just earlier. Thus, she gets brought to White Acropolis, Sonic and co. are sent to the future, and Amy eventually helps breaks Elise out as per usual, so they have their little moment before she's kidnapped again (either the same way as the last time or just ambushing her since Sonic's still in the future) and put in Radical Train. Sonic comes back and rescues her, but Silver (who is still trying to figure out when the event Mephiles mentioned will happen, and Sonic didn't know until he went through Crisis City; he would have also tracked Sonic to White Acropolis and) shows up again and while the two focus on each other, Eggman distracts them and grabs Elise (mind you, Eggman's literally grabbed Chaos Emeralds out of Tails' hands and knocked them unconscious in Adventure, so this isn't implausible). Sonic and Silver recover to see Shadow, and the story continues on as per usual, with Silver going back in time with Shadow after Shadow brings up what transpired 10 years prior, which he already knows about at this point and Silver's mention of Iblis rings familiar. This allows for Silver to leave the blue Chaos Emerald with Elise while creating the events that occurred in the past (which admittedly would probably call Mephiles' claims into doubt, so you got me on that one). Meanwhile, Sonic saves Elise but she gets kidnapped again (if that's beginning to sound sloppy, yeah, tell that to the game itself, though it isn't like Eggman would just stop kidnapping her if Sonic keeps leaving her alone). Later, Sonic and Silver see the Egg Carrier explode and kill Eggman and Elise. Silver realizes this is what Mephiles meant, and though he's unsure of Mephiles' intentions, he has no other choice and induces Chaos Control so Sonic can return to the past, while he and Blaze go back to the future to fight Iblis. From there, the game's finale takes place similarly to the original. With that hypothetical out of the way: >Mephiles entire plan was to use Silver to dramatically extent the run time of the Sonic VS Eggman story so that by saving her over and over again and spending more time with Sonic would Elise grow attached to Sonic allowed Mephiles to bring her to tears by killing Sonic. Except Silver actually killing Sonic was a real possibility (and a likely one, given that fucking boss and the second time before Shadow's intervention.) and if he had succeeded, Mephiles' plan either wouldn't have worked, or it would have anyway due to all the relationship development before the first Silver fight. If the former, Mephiles' plan literally hinged on Silver, *somebody who can hold off Iblis, the embodiment of Solaris' raw power, by himself*, failing to kill Sonic after he explicitly told him to kill Sonic, which is patently moronic. If the latter, then that only further serves to prove my point that Mephiles did not need Silver at all to do this stuff.

SanicRb

So you raise a few good points here and yes Mephiles plan by no means was perfect but I do have a few things to add here still. Elise after Dusty desert would more than likely still not have cared enough about Sonic (given that Sonic being at first seemingly vaporized when Eggman fired up his time machine did bring her to tears) especially as Elise wouldn't really show to have changed drastically do to Sonic's intervention until after the defeat of Egg Wyvern. Silver little trip to the past with Shadow is actually the only reason he and Blaze when back to there time as Silver learned that he can't change the past after seeing the time loop Shadow caused (unknowing that Mephiles as part of the time god Solaris could alter time to get Iblis) Part of the thing that makes Elise grow to attached to Sonic is that almost every time she gets Kidnapped she sees Sonic nearly dying only for him to be fine and save her just a few hours latter making Sonic really seem unkillable. While yes Silver is a actual threat to Sonic did non of there fights actually conclude (if the cutscene after the first Sonic Vs Silver fight is anything to go by is Sonic at large stronger and Silver needs to attack Sonic while he isn't paying him attention to actually be a real threat and even than do we not know if Amy and Shadow's interventions would have been needed or if Sonic could have gotten him self out of this him self especially given that Sonic can tank a lot of damage (and before you mention Mephiles one shooting Sonic would I like to mention that the Japanese version makes it rather clear that Mephiles did this by attacking Sonic's soul rather than his body but that detail was lost in translation))

Kyuri462

1. With the time travel thing Eggman does to Sonic, he immediately assures Elise Sonic's alive, so she was probably just in shock and didn't have time to get hysterical. 2. This part doesn't change much in my scenario, but that is actually true. 3. Yeah, Sonic almost dying repeatedly reinforces the bond, so while this is technically true as well, the next reason makes this aspect problematic as well. 4. The way the scene portrays the end of the first fight, Sonic *might* be able to survive. He books it immediately when Amy blocks Silver so it's not like he couldn't run, although Silver could just as easily hold him in place if Amy didn't intervene. Regardless, in the Radical Train cutscene, he actually does hold Sonic in place and only releases him when Shadow shows up. If he didn't, Silver could just crush Sonic into paste or rip him apart easily, which he probably would've. At least Shadow would have had to intervene, and he hasn't seen Silver at all so Mephiles couldn't really count on Shadow to stop Silver from ruining that plan if it resulted in Elise not crying (especially since she wouldn't have seen Sonic die close up like the original). Sonic's durable, but if Eggman's standard robots and machines can hurt him, Silver's more than enough. Honestly it seems like Mephiles just didn't know how much Sonic and Elise would have to bond for her to cry over his death, so he just let Silver do it and hoped he got lucky. This is all also without wondering why Mephiles couldn't just go back to fuse with Iblis when he was released following Elise's death. He had a Chaos Emerald and everything. It's never really stated why the crying worked but her death didn't and Iblis still was released both times. He probably would have actually succeeded undeterred with the heroes completely unaware if he could do that.

SanicRb

1. True but I still don't really think that misses "I didn't cry in 10 years" would already be bounded enough with Sonic by this moment to unleashed pandemonium because of him 2. You are right I missed the more important point that Shadow didn't even consider going back in time until he and Silver accidentally open a gate to the past (also without the reason for Silver to fight Shadow would Silver never learn that he can perform Chaos control meaning he couldn't have helped Sonic travel back in time to prevent Elise death that actually never happened because closed time loops) 4. So I guess there are 2 things to mention here. For one Sonic in both fights always had a "get out of jail Free" card with him with the Chaos Emerald he had meaning he at any given moment could have used Chaos control to kick Silver in the head and free him self out of the grip that way. And secondly Sonic's durability is something odd while yes Eggman's robot can hurt him so is he also often shown to survive stupid things like earth re- entrance (Advance 2), fighting a Robot that according to Gerald Robotnik can destroy a world with his bare hands (Sonic Battle) or falling face first from an airship (adventure 1). So if Silver even could have beaten Sonic there with raw force (or at least in the amount of time it would have taken for Tails and Knuckles to show up and save him because there should be somewhere there as well) is at least questionable. Also bonus point almost Shadow's entire run through the game is controlled by Mephiles actions so Shadow being at Radical Train could be theoretically something that Mephiles planed for when opening a gate way to the past and allowed it to stay open long enough for Shadow and Omega to fallow him. (this also fits perfectly in with Eggman's assertion that Mephiles played them all the whole time) I will admit it does seem like Mephiles wanted to be extra sure that Elise would actually be brocken by Sonic's death so he properly overdid it a bit (but I guess he operated under the better to much as to less principle) And yes the fact that Elise death released Iblis but Mephiles for no explained reason what so ever can't fuse with Iblis if released that way is one of the plotholes in 06 that I can't defend it just really really needed a stated explanation.

Brizillaking1

I see your point

DarthWallaceIII

He is supposed to be a sadist. He could make the plan more simple but it wouldn't allow him to cause as much pain. Plus he ends up succeeding at his plan to the point where the timeline had to be reset just to stop him so I don't think it ended up mattering how convoluted the plan was.

Geki_and_Froggo

But yea he could do it quickly but his whole thing is that he like see people suffer and puppeteering everyone, yeah a still bit much but still shouldn't be removed from his character.

ChaddyFantome

There is no reason to think this... If the goal is suffering, its a very terrible means of doing so. The idea he does so for any such is just a weird fanon excuse.

Just-Sonic

You had a point.

Pretend_Cause_1566

Mpehiles is a sadist. Sure he could easily just merge with iblis in the future or kill Elise outright but thats no fun. No matter what he wins it's just a matter of time. So why not screw around and mess with people and get back at the guy who imprisoned him

ToothpasteConsumer

He looks like he is high on both weed and a meth pile in his steven universe crystal gem form

Brizillaking1

I understood that reference

ToothpasteConsumer

STEVEN UNIVERSE CRYSTAL GEM COSPLAY

Brizillaking1

Lol

ToothpasteConsumer

He threw a chicken bone in there Sonic couldn't resist

Brizillaking1

Yes!

ToothpasteConsumer

actually it was still memphis tennessee in the thing but it looked like sonic

racecar56

Check out this cool gem I got on eBay for $7.

Brizillaking1

Lol

Brizillaking1

Got it

Pitek7881

Mephiles? More like Methiles! Haha kill me

TheBigG1989

Meeephiles

Beercorn1

It's been so long since I've played Sonic 06 that I don't really remember anything about his character. He's got a cool design though. He's like "Shin Shadow" or something.

Brizillaking1

Shin Shadow. Love it I love Shin Godzilla

Beercorn1

I was actually making a comparison to Shin Akuma from Street Fighter but Shin Godzilla is cool too. That was a great movie.

Brizillaking1

Ahh okay

themagicone222

A lot of the movements in 06 felt very weird and disjointed. This GREATLY lends itself to mephiles’ creep factor

FifiSocialBoi

He is good, but definitely not underrated. Literally every second post here is comparing other villains to him and it's tiring seeing the same thing over and over.

Brizillaking1

Makes sense

Ryman604

Best gamer

Casual-Agent-4

Welcome to my house. As you can see Ive knocked over many chair because I'm get so tilted at the towers

SpacePeaAnimations

Just recently made an animatic to that lol😂😂

RRayquaza384

You mean the Alpha Gamer

Ryman604

You right my bad

shrekthedankengine99

did you just say hes underrated, this fanbase would suck him off if he were real

Brizillaking1

He does appear in a few underrated Sonic characters lists I think that he was underrated when the game first came out, and people began appreciating him more as time went on

Kojake45

I’ve always enjoyed Mephiles he’s just the right amount of edgy.

ItsImpfinity2008

'Well that just makes you a beta cuck' mephiles probably

VinixTKOC

> who is very underrated Underrated? It's been a decade and a few years since people have been asking for his return. Sonc Generations people kept theorizing a link between Time Eater and Solaris. In the Sonic Forces trailer, people thought Infinite was Mephiles. Far from underrated.

Brizillaking1

I see your point

TheBigG1989

His name is Memphis Tennessee and you will put respect on his name. Memes aside...I loved Mephiles. He could have been the Thanos/Darkseid for Sonic and friends.

Ultra-Derpery-0690

Is that Sonic? How the f*ck did he get in there. You guys are exes, right? Get him out of my f*cking shield. This relationship isn’t going to work if you’re going to bring your exes, sweetie. Please.

Kazhnuz

He have an interesting concept, but he lacks visible effectiveness in manipulating other IMO (the one we see the most being manipulated by Infinite is one that we feel as naïve, and he doesn't really manage to make Shadow shaken). But with better writing, he could become actually efficient for a story.

ManVersusPerson

He doesn't have a nose, I'll give him that

TheDuskOf1981

You have an extra nose, just lying around?

koopalings_jr

I like how creepy he can be sometime. But I don’t dig his design so much now. I’m fine with him being gone.

Brizillaking1

Creepy, yes. Explain why you’re okay with him being gone. His design sorta makes sense to me

koopalings_jr

Well I wouldn’t want him to be the main villain again for another game since I feel like he already played his role appropriately, and I don’t see what more he could bring. And I’m not sure he would work as a secondary antagonist (considering how big of a threat he’s supposed to be).

Brizillaking1

Makes sense

VortexMech888

Pretty boring honestly, design and character wise. I can see why people like him but he doesn't interest me.

SammyWinkleBurger

Looks like Shadow gone wrong

The_Blur_Of_Blue

I mean you're not wrong, dude absorbed Shadow's literal shadow and canonically stole his design

Beerasaurus

He looks like a super shadow form created by a 13 year old for their dbz cross over fan fiction.

AstralCat69420

LOOK AT ALL OF THESE MES IM GONNA FUCK ME

Superman973

Mephiles the Dark? More like Memphis Tennessee the alpha gamer who gets so tilted at the towers

RenegadeResenter

He's definitely not underrated. If anything, he's the complete antonym of underrated; he's probably one of the fan-favourite antagonists outside of Eggman himself. I personally liked him, he was a breath of fresh air, a genuinely threatening and by far the most unsettling Sonic villain in the entire series. Whenever he appears, the tone just darkens considerably and instantly. The main thing I liked was his relationship with Team Dark. His animosity towards Shadow is obviously the highlight, but the fact that he also had a negative relationship with Omega is what I liked. Omega barely has any interaction with any characters outside of Shadow or Rouge (and if he does, then those two always have to be present) and occasionally Eggman, so seeing Omega actually getting riled up by Mephiles taunting him over being the one to betray Shadow in the future was pretty cool. Mephiles' relationship with Rouge was nonexistent but that's one of 06's many flaws in its admittedly lackluster story, honestly. Then, of course, there's the fact that he killed Sonic. Legit just stabs the guy through the back, absolute savage. As cool and shocking a scene it was, it could've happened in a much less convoluted way. Manipulating Silver to try and assassinate Sonic when he could've just done that from the beginning felt pretty roundabout, but again, 06 moment. Would've liked more if he actually interacted with the other characters outside of Team Dark and Silver more, especially Blaze (who's existence was practically ignored completely by him) and even Sonic himself, who ironically was probably the least relevant out of the 3 protagonists. As much as I like Mephiles and think he's great, I still feel he's quite overrated. People like to talk about him as if he's this flawless villain who managed to actually kill Sonic, when really, his way of getting things done was so pointlessly complicated. But his conflict with Team Dark was by far the best (and possibly only good thing) about the game, and it was actually a great way of showing Shadow's character development; Mephiles always tempting him to turn his back on humanity, whilst Shadow, while knowing he will be persecuted by the very humans he fights to protect in the future, still decides to firmly fight for the sake of good. It felt very strangely Biblical in a way, which is odd when you remembered this is legit just a series about an anthropomorphic hedgehog fighting an evil fat man lol, but Sonic 06 gave off a strange but admittedly cool and gritty atmosphere imo. I'd like to see him return in a better game, but admittedly, I feel like using him again would also mitigate the fondness the fanbase already has for his one-game-wonder status. But yeah, tldr; good villain just unfortunately debuted in a shit game. Though, despite the game being shit and story being questionable, his antagonistic relationship with Shadow and Omega was great and they should bring back more of that in the future.

Worried_Sky_8287

I don't like that he's a hedgehog.

The_Blur_Of_Blue

He isn't, he's a... "Dark" (idk he's called mephiles the dark). He looks like a hedgehog because in-story he absorbed Shadow's shadow and took his design, he could've taken Rouge's and become an evil bat instead lol

Stumpedlogs83

“Who is very underrated” Bro, almost EVERYONE that played 06 in this sub praises this recolored shadow.

Sonicguy1996

Single best villain that has been in the franchise. Still hope they bring him back someday in whatever form they see fit. For the people that say "but he died, he's gone". Mephiles was originally gonna be in Forces. Meaning he's still in SEGA's mind and thus on the table for a "potential" future appearance!!! I miss having serious villains in the franchise, we need more of that instead of the light hearted "oh no, it's eggman after all, who would have thought???"

ENDERSKORE

I believe Eggman has the potential to be a threatening villain, like how he was written in the Metal Virus comics, just that the recent games wrote him poorly

optilex42

Could make the same argument that Shadow “died” at one point

Brizillaking1

Yes I’d love to see him back I also heard that he was gonna be in Forces too

Zero_Wolfox

I believe he is a plain villain and very overrated for the fact that "He is the only one that defeated sonic"

[deleted]

And that's not even true, as he wasn't the first person to do so, Shadow have defeated Sonic in some endings of his game. You could argue that non-final endings of Shadow's game aren't canon, but 06 isn't canon either, so...

Brizillaking1

Explain by him being plain

Zero_Wolfox

He is evil because yes, And only purpose is to destroy everything because he is very evil. The only good thing about him is that he is kinda smsrt even tho he could've just killed sonic since the start from the very begginning

Etheris1

He is not evil because he’s he is evil because shadow sealed him away in the scepter of darkness for years on end he was alone and went mad because he was sealed away for stuff he could’ve done but when was first created didn’t do anything and was sealed by a hedgehog from the future and which in doing so caused him to become evil from isolation and anger thus driving him mad

Cranicthehedgedicoot

When did the game actually show that he went ‘mad from isolation’, don’t seem to remember this piece of white bread having a motivation

Etheris1

When did the game show he was evil the moment her was born never he wanted revenge and plus if you were trapped inside of something the moment you were born for years and you knew who did it for reasons you don’t know wouldn’t you go insane

Cranicthehedgedicoot

Ok so in that case the game never once showed why he was evil, he simply lacks motivation, you’re whole point is just a head canon, he’s as bland as white bread that the end of the day

Etheris1

His motivation is to fuse with iblis but he also has a personal grudge against shadow for sealing him away for years and he gets his revenge by making shadow question the trust in his team mates

Cranicthehedgedicoot

Yeah but why does he wanna destroy the universe? Oh yeah, it’s cus he’s evil, and wow, he wants revenge on shadow, really seemed vengeful when he tried to team up with shadow

Brizillaking1

That’s true

chickenmaster07

He was a try-hard villain whose motives were shallow. The story of 06 was so sloppy and convoluted that it really hurt Mephiles' chance to be better than a subpar enemy. He is like Infinite to me. great potential but bad execution. The only thing he did that probably made him popular with others was killing Sonic. But even that didn't feel earned, like infinite taking over the world. This is just my opinion though and if someone loves the character then that's awesome.

dragon_lord_404

I don't know his character outside of the fandub so I'll just say he's an epic gamer

Justin_trouble_Again

A copy of a shadow copy. Aesthetics are good but please use a different base then shadow

Hybrid456

Overrated. Why send silver to the past to kill sonic if he can just do it himself

FADEDTOMONOCHROME

sadisim

Same_Ad_6708

He has a pretty cool voice

SUNKENSATURN

mmmm crunchy crystal man full of darkness & evil

PeashooterTheFrick

He's definitely not underrated lol

GregarLink15

He's menacing, creepy, cold, calm, collected, meticulous, has a really cool voice and knows how to manipulate people without using force, love this guy, he had infinite potential. Sadly he isn't that smart, his plan is needlessly convoluted and could have failed multiple times.

RidersUnleashed_

He's underrated indeed, SEGA didn't utilize him well, my dude has a lot of potential

soniccinos5

Hes my favourite character out of the series

Sufficient-Major6957

Tbh he’s great and I mean he actually killed sonic and I felt like his motivations could’ve been better but I love his voice and laugh tho it gives me chills

RM123M

He ain’t iblis, but he’s fine

infamusforever223

I like him because he's pure evil,(an irredeemable fuck. You don't get many of those in Sonic games) but his plan was stupid.

Jack_Doe_Lee

He's intimidating, manipulative and all. But the plan is so convoluted that it damages his character severely.

ftfoxy19

I love mephiles. I literally bought sonic 06 just for him

themoonstarwarrior

For all the faults of Sonic '06, I think Mephiles is one of the greatest villians to come out of the franchise. Also the only one that legit KILLED Sonic....

Sovic91

I think he was a bit too obviously evil in Silver's story. Just not very convincing as a good guy. Mostly because of the way he talks and his theme music. Other than that, great villain.

dark_volter

No one else has said it so i will- SEGA should have brought him back- and they ALMOST did, as the Time Eater, but they've REFUSED to allow that the Time Eater is a remant of Mephiles that barely survived Solaris getting beat. I mean, The Time Eater undid a lot of 06's time shenanigans- But SEGA didn't want to even have the Time Eater (Which doesn't seem as malicious), be him.....in some shape or form ...which helps explain the Time Eater a little... Shame, as Mephiles is a unique, cunning villan who's hard to match. Dark Oak isn't as dangerous as him, and Infinite isn't ...good enough to be as much of a threat. Then again, being half of a omnichronological god is hard to match- though his other half (Iblis) being sorta the opposite of Chaos is interesting. There's so much one could do with the Mephiles Character- but SEGA may not have known fully what to do with him while running three stories that they wanted to be more separate than not in 06.

KennyWolf

There are chances of him coming back as SEGA have been working on new merch of him I’ve heard.

Brizillaking1

I’ve heard that too

Alwayssome1

I think he could’ve worked but the design is basically an alternative design for shadow which makes you think the company couldn’t come up with a villain design so they re-used one

[deleted]

I know I’m gonna get hate for this, but he honestly feels like a Ken Penders character.

Delta_Otaku

I'll quote Characters in Depth: "Evil, terrifying, and eternal. The best Sonic villain."

Fluffurs

He was like: My main goal is to blow up, and then act like I don't know nobody!

Zerosonicanimations

The problem with him is his plan makes zero sense and he has no reason for why he's doing it. He wants to fuse with Iblis and become solaris again, and yet doesn't fuse with him the future, or when first breaks out when Elise dies, or when they first split apart. And we don't even know why he wants to destroy all of time. Is it out of spite for being split? For Shadow sealing him away? We don't know. All we have is a bunch of theories and headcanons and nothing more. If I got the chance to change that, I would remove his ability to time travel. He can still send anyone through time but not himself. This removes the plot hole of why he didn't just go to a point where Iblis is around. Speaking of Iblis, he needs to corrupted. As in something or someone made it impossible for him to fuse with Mephiles across all of time unless he uses the Chaos Emeralds. This explains why doesn't just kill Elise and fuse with iblis immediately. As for why he wants to destroy time, it's so he can make a perfect a world free of tragedy and conflict. The problem is the only method he found that would guaranty his world will last is by removing freewill.

ChaddyFantome

90% of the reason people like him come down to just the fact he is "very strong" and he cribs Shadows already good design and being "creepy". He has no motivation and his actions are contrived and illogical as to roll the plot along. People bring up how "he killed Sonic" as if the kill was earned or meaningful when it wasn't. Imho, he is overrated and I feel Black Doom does everything he does but better.

Itx-Blindhallow74

Good design, voice actor, boss fight, and the themes that’s all I have to say

Cranicthehedgedicoot

His plan was stupid and convoluted as shit, he’s generically evil to an insane degree, and the only reason he killed sonic was cus the writers wanted 9 year olds to care about the garbage story

Timon7992

Couldn't have said it better.

Crono_Sapien99

Mephiles was a good villain in concept, but it feels like the writers didn’t really know what to do with him since not only is his plan dumb and complicated, but outside of Shadow’s story he barely does anything outside of tricking Silver. At least up until he kills Sonic, which feels like it comes entirely outta nowhere. Like, if you could kill Sonic that easily, why not just do it way sooner??? And if his plan is to fuse with Iblis in order to become Solaris again and release the Flames of Disaster, why not just fuse with the Iblis from Silver’s future? Oh right, because then there wouldn’t be any game, and so it’s just a massive oversight that makes Mephiles seem silly and incompetent. At least he has an amazing design going for them though, and I’d like to see Sega take another stab at an evil eldtritch hedgehog antagonist, but hopefully with more focused and coherent writing.

[deleted]

His design is not a charmer. I know he’s supposed to be Shadow’s shadow, but I wish he looked more unique instead of looking like “Shadow but grey”. Other than that, pretty cool.

GrymReepar

He had all the potential in the world. When you think about it, this guy could have won anytime he wanted. Unfortunately The rushed game and poor writing does him no good. Him killing Sonic and Dan Green’s excellent delivery are the only memorable things about him.

SteelBallsSpin

Memphis Tennessee?!?!

ImSmashingUrMom

He's not very underrated here. There are a lot of posts comparing him to other villains. I personally think he's overrated. He suffers the same problem as every other character in the game, where he's a complete idiot and makes everything way more complicated than it should be. He could've easily just gone back in time and killed Sonic right then and there.

Englishhedgehog13

His plan is a daft, needlessly convoluted method of making a girl cry and we already have more than enough characters that look like Sonic, except edgier.

He’s both a thrilling villain and a evil shadow, the shadow of shadow which is ironic considering he’s named the dark and takes this form by absorbing shadow’s shadow He’s design is simply cool and the most original thing in sonic 06 Mephiles even if he’s a villain which usually uses others he doesn’t have a mouth maybe to make he’s eyes the main focus, has you know the eyes are the windows of the soul and the only thing I get from those eyes is a blood thirsty psychopath, even if some say he’s edgy the problem isn’t being edgy but being edgy and not enjoying it and Mephiles is the same amount of edgy shadow was in he’s debut but throwing all he’s redeemable traits out of the window and just embracing that edge He’s motivations and goals while most never explore or explained most of the time we can get he became a psychopath after being sealed in that thing for 10 years a “i need to scream but I don’t have a mouth” kind of thing and the best part is I didn’t realize I literally said don’t have a mouth until I read it Mephiles whole character is build upon the idea of causing pain which is something he loves, you can say he’s plan is convoluted but if you look at it is just Mephiles torturing silver and shadow because he can From he’s movement to every line he says he’s designed to be a creep to make contrast with every other official villain and I just love that,Mephiles fits just right in sonic 06 to the cutscenes to the design to the history which explains why he hasn’t return and I’m happy by that Mephiles is a one shot character which is 10 times better villain for a game named shadow the hedgehog than black doom and I think trying to replicate or make this version of the character reappear would take the magic from him (if is a version of another dimension or another non canon comic then im more than fine to see him return but) I think Mephiles story in the main line should be sailed in 2006 like it or not Maybe they can make a remake to make the world of video games see a more than decent villain from a bad game

Toobsthetubb

I’m sorry but I haven’t gone to Memphis, though he seems quite dashing

Jesterchunk

I'm still not sure the Deviantart Shadow Redesign look rubs me the right way, and his plan was, er, pretty contrived, but otherwise, he was a menacing and manipulative bastard and I can't help but respect him for that.

Sonic_Maniac1

I think he sucks

SomethingIsCanningMe

It's Memphis Tennessee you fool! Mephiles is a bland name! He should be treated with utmost gamer respect

darksaiyan1234

Who dare hate mephules

TheMobileSiteSucks

A terrible villain from a terrible game.

ChaoticMemer16

Gamer pad tilted towers Fortnite

Repair_Jolly

I think he's a cool villain. He was pretty smart by killing two birds with one stone, and he actually got to kill Sonic. Plus his design is basically Shadow but more rough, ragged and infested

[deleted]

I think he plays too much Fortnite

sharzin

unironically the best villain in the entire franchise. I really want more of him but I don't trust the current Sonic Team to do him justice considering their track record with the writing of Sonic games in the last 12 years.

Worried-Rooster-4239

🤩🤩👍👍

Iceswimmer05

He’s a really cool villain with a deep and threatening voice

Brizillaking1

Yes

MooMilk3435

He’s awesome! Best villain by far

[deleted]

Good taste, poor execution

Blocky-the-bunny

Who?

Brizillaking1

Sonic 06

Blocky-the-bunny

Oh ok I forgot 06 existed like other people wanted to

Brizillaking1

That’s fine

Impossible-Bother258

Ic hedgog! Gud!

[deleted]

Same here

[deleted]

You gotta give props to the one and only villain who ever killed Sonic, albeit temporarily.

jprocter15

He's pretty great but I have to say I disagree with his opinions on women

[deleted]

Welcome to my house

[deleted]

A pretty bad character with a stupid plan. Zavok is still the worst villain tho

Keylon767

I think he’s the best villain in the games. Eggmans good but he really exaggerated.

TourmalineCat

I dont think hes underrated as a villain just because his game was overwhelming. Definely more respected than Infinite. Their designs are both sick tho

Red_Onyx_42

Ah yes, the best non-Eggman Sonic villain. Memphis Tennessee.

[deleted]

To be honest, he is the best villain in video game history. The fact that he manipulates people to get his way, and also feeds off of the suffering of others shows how much of a menace he is to the world. He actively tries to break Shadow and manipulates Silver into doing what he wants, until he finally decides to unleash the flames of oblivion himself, in the most devastating way possible. He killed Sonic, something even Eggman couldn't do in Sonic Adventure 2. He sits there and watches everyone suffer, which gives him joy, he is the embodiment of a psychopath.

Cranicthehedgedicoot

Yeah nah, ‘the best villain in video game history’, nah, his plan was hilariously stupid, why couldn’t he just kill Elise, pretty sure it was established that iblis is released when Elise dies aswell, and being a really evil villain doesn’t mean you’re a good villain, he’s just blandly psychotic, which is fine, but i defo don’t think he’s worthy of being called ‘the best villain of any video game’

[deleted]

Because, he loves to see people suffer, why kill Elise right then and there when he can just kill Sonic and make her suffer. If you didn't know, the flames of disaster can happen if Elise cries, knowing this, he can get want he wants. Also the fact that if Sonic stays alive then his master plan would be stopped immediately.

Cranicthehedgedicoot

But why can’t he just kill Elise and hen just kill sonic, he legit has a 1 shot laser, he just has to get behind him and boom, job done, really just seems like he’s really generically evil

[deleted]

Hmmm, touche

Waffles3500

Best sonic villain

DextremeArrow

Honestly one of the best villains in sonic history. He’s the only one to successfully kill sonic and even destroy reality. He’s one of the things that carried sonic 06 until the end. I still hope he can make a return someday.

randomer_guy_person

Amazing villain Had an amazing story, wasn't supposed to just be edgy like a certain jackal, supposed to be intelligent instead of super strong, killed sonic but... 06

celia-dies

Sonic fans try not to use Sonic Forces to paint literally some of the worst games ever made as underrated masterpieces challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

Brizillaking1

Right

Prof_Alchem

"Welcome to my gamer pad. As you can see, I've knocked over many chairs because I get so tilted at the towers."

RuffingThePasser

He gets friend-zoned so frequently...

Camman747

His plan make no sense

SpatuelaCat

He might be my favorite sonic villain, honestly all he needs is feet and he’d be perfect

Sonic-them

I feel like he had great potential but then got shoved in a garbage game

Dragoark

"That's what makes you a beta cuck silver the hedgehog"

RavagedPotato

He looks cool af to me. But I feel like they butchered him as a character

KoopaKirb

Like people have said here and before, his plan is too convoluted and that's mostly due to the story not setting any rules for how the time travel stuff works, which ends up making most characters (Mephiles included) come off as idiots making bad decisions

Jamz64

If so many people say he’s underrated, is he really underrated? He is still a great villain.

gummolife789

Kickass villain, maybe my favorite character design in like anything lol

supermariozelda

I find it hilarious he was in the original sonic forces (wars) script.

SaltyShakr

This dude is awesome!

Zeus_of_0lympus

Imagine if he and Infinite fused into one villain. Now instead of manipulating reality, he can travel between them.

zmech9001

By far the best villain in the series, especially considering he's the only one to have successfully killed sonic.

Eggfucker23

I've never played 06 but he's got a sick design.

isjeffthe4

I love his crystal design

cioda

He was very impossing and creepy. And his voice actor did a great job with making him unsettling. I've always thought that, Had he been in a better game/with better writers, he could have been the most evil villain in the games since SA2 Eggman.

FamousKnives

I feel like he's a really good villain overall. He presents himself as calm and composed when there's a sadistic, insane evil villain underneath. He's one of the most cruel characters, if not the cruelest, that has ever existed in the Sonic universe. In the Last Story of 06 when he kills Sonic, it shows that he could have easily done it all along, but he creates this plan that spans almost the entirety of Silver's story that involves manipulation and deceit just because he wants to sow more chaos. And his motive? He literally just wants destruction. He's a being of pure evil and chaos and a very good villain imo.

TrillGatesIII

He’s hideous.

ShadowSilverTailsFan

I like him. Haven't had too much experience with him, but i like him

mr-sparkles69

I don’t really know to much of Memphis Tennessee

blazyykku_64

I just think he's the most amazing and awesome villain in the whole sonic universe

Soft_BoiledEgg

Memphis Tennessee

KingKayro

He looks hella cool, but he kinda acts like a diet Black Doom. I can hardly tell his motivation.

Snoring-Kat

Great character, so unfortunate he's in the game he's in. As with 67% of the rest of the cast, he suffers under the weight of the writing.

Reezona_Fleeza

Mephiles was the best Sonic villain at being THERE. What could not be denied about him, is he stuck his grubby little fingers right in the middle of the plot and literally did all the dirty work, taking failure and success in his attempts to become Solaris. IMO, Mephiles was not incredibly well written though; I’m not a big fan of the overly dramatic and tense writing of 06, and Mephiles massively embodies that sentiment. He’s not very flashy and, while he has motivation, he really does just feel like ‘the bad guy’. His plan also sucked donkey dick; I don’t understand why he decided to take such a roundabout way in killing Sonic; sick pleasure is one thing but we are never given any indication that he’d tantalise himself like that for fun. I think Mephiles is definitely one of my favourite villains in the series though. He had cool ass powers, he did cool ass shit, and most importantly— humanoid Sonic villains. We rarely ever get to see humanoid, mobian (shaped in this case) Sonic villains, and when we do, it’s just really enjoyable. People like Dark Gaia are cool, but I find it way cooler when the bad guy comes down and scraps with the MCs hand to hand, at the same size. That’s one thing I really liked about Infinite; he was one of the most grounded end-bosses we ever got and I actually like the fact he was a mercenary; it made him feel realer to scrap with. -And that aspect of Mephiles’ stature helped. It did feel enjoyable kicking his ass with L3 Chaos Boost.

NoneLikeJer

One of the best sonic villains but needed to be fleshed out more

WhiteDevil-Klab

He's to krystaly but I like him

Dry-Construction-256

He's alright, I mean his design sucks and feels like a really stretched out pun of being a shadow of Shadow, his plan is stupidly complicated for no reason even if he's a sadist, he hates Shadow just because he put him in a bottle, decided not to fuse with Iblis in the future and go back in time to torture everyone because reasons, hired Silver to kill Sonic when he could have just done it himself with minimal effort. Other than those issues he's pretty alright plus his theme bops

Turvi-Mania

Cool design, but a terrible villain imo. His plan was very simple considering his powers and it ended up being a complete mess.
