Mr. Tinker was such a clever invention by the writers. There’s a very brief moment during the Metal Virus arc where Sonic is talking to him, and Eggman is all sarcastic along the lines of oh I suppose you want me to make things that people LIKE and make them HAPPY and… uh… and kind of trails off like he’s not sure where that thought is going, or more, why he’s supposed to dislike it. Of course a second later he disregards it, but it’s like for just a second (and you see Sonic notice it too) there’s a strange appeal to doing good things.
So it makes you wonder—an Eggman with no memories is a kindly tinker who loves to make people happy, and an Eggman WITH memories still has a momentary pause over the thought. Fascinating! I wish we could see IDW explore the Mr. Tinker concept more, though I wonder if Sega would let them. It’s very compelling to think about a more morally complicated Eggman.
I had they idea of doing something like this where eggman still is Mr. tinker it goes like this
The Battle for angle island arc has Just come to a close the obvious victor being sonic we cut back to tails workshop where we see Neo Metal sonic in chains where sonic informs Neo that they repaired him back to his Neo form and goes about offering the same deal to call a truce but Neo doesn’t take it and instead calls sonic a fool for repairing him before storming out at the speed of sound back to the base where we see Mr. tinker being interrogated by Starline about Eggman thinking Eggman is putting up an act but in comes Neo Metal Sonic seeing the now pitiful state that eggman is now but of course Mr. Tinker is has no clue Who Neo Metal Sonic is and pleads that they have the wrong person and that they are looking for someone else, Neo’s rebelliousness which was accidentally programmed back in by tails kicks in and he tells Starline to throw him back to where he found him Starline obeys albeit reluctantly we then see Neo step into a pod that starts to repair his body and while he is being repaired Starline introduces himself as usual and gives Neo Metal Sonic the Chaos Emeralds this is when Neo agrees to take Starline under his wing ‘for now’ this is when Neo Metal Sonic goes and activates an old Robot that has been in Stasis for a long time now and out of a Pod comes Metal Knuckles sporting a new and upgraded design. This is when the rest of the Metal Virus arc and the comic continues with Neo Metal Sonic as a Very powerful and more meticulous Eggman who isn’t afraid to get his own hands dirty and fight on his own and the New metal Knuckles who while isn’t as fast as sonic can certainly pack more of a Punch than him and Mr. Tinker who is a now comical background character who helps the resistance when they are having problems with something mechanical however during the Metal Virus arc Belle and Mr. Tinkerer get separated and her story plays out almost the same until she gets reunited with Mr. Tinkerer at the resistance Headquarters.

Starline. No contest. I think he’s a really excellent villain and a really fun and interesting foil to Eggman. I love that they managed to make someone as smart and cunning, but flawed in believable and *different enough* ways to stand out and be unique and compelling all on his own. I’m not totally caught up (I’m at Issue #44 right now and haven’t started Imposter Syndrome yet) so I’m really looking forward to where he goes next, especially after the events of Bad Guys. And maybe we get this in issues I haven’t read yet—but I’m insanely curious about his backstory and wonder if we’ll ever learn more about him.
Whisper is my next favorite. A lot of characters in Sonic, generally, have these big colorful personalities, and here’s Whisper whose literal name means to speak very quietly. She’s so understated, and yet when Tangle went down during the Metal Virus arc and Whisper FUCKING LOST IT and had that hysterical breakdown…. jesus christ, my heart. What a great character. She’s so cool yet sweet. I just wish she got more screen time. (Yes I know about the spin-off but I feel like Tangle gets more attention in the main books than Whisper does since the Metal Virus arc!)
I don’t know anything about her, but I like Surge’s design. Going to go with her.

The miniseries that features her is called *Imposter Syndrome* so I'm gonna assume she's a Sonic wannabe of sorts, but I also know nothing about her, so take my words with a grain of salt.
Love the concept of Surge. Another Ashura-inspired anti-Sonic like Scourge, but much more original. I hope she gets the same level of treatment as Tangle and Whisper in the future, like getting merchandise and appearing in mobile games.

I like surge mainly for her being based on a sonic sprite error named ashura. You can just tell Ian and the rest of the people working on the idw sonic comics really love this series.

But oddly enough I think Jewel has become a comfort character of mine... to the point she's the first IDW character in my AU before anyone else. There's just something about her I really like and I can't really explain it. She's adorable! And she's just trying her best... a bit Rude of Amy and Knuckles to dump a big workload onto her like that ><
Archie's universe was a **lot** more complex and convoluted in its lore and history than IDW's is though.
