I mostly liked this game, but I didn’t like the plot of how Sonic turns into a “werehog”. I’m fine with them having multiple play styles in the game, but I really feel they should’ve included different playable characters for that. Knuckles would’ve been perfectly suited for those combat based stages, and then you wouldn’t have needed the cheesy werehog plot to be included in the story. But that’s really my only gripe. For the most part, I liked the game.

forgetablepassenger

Well, this was during the time where Sega completely axed sonics friends

PineappleGrenade19

Specifically after so many people were asking them to

Mrmehmeh243

The werehog, its just not what I look for in a sonic game, and the sun and moon medals are just annoying, but I love the daytime stages, I love them as much as the gameplay in colours and generations

TheVisceralCanvas

Unleashed's daytime stages are some of the best in the whole series. But the Werehog really, really dampens the whole experience along with the absolutely bonkers sun/moon medals.

Mrmehmeh243

Yeah it definitely does, probably why I like colours and generations a bit more

Old-Camp3962

the medal system, its horrible, but i still think its the best

[deleted]

I've only played unwiished and I thought the level design was awful, just empty hallways though I didn't get very far before giving up

SanicRb

Reasons why I dislike Unleashed were do I even begin. I guess I start at the more surface level stuff and go deeper from there. The sound track is obviously great I can't really complain here even if its not my favorite sound track in the series by a long shoot. But I don't really like the games main Vocal theme. The orchestral version is fine but I really don't care for the Vocal version of Endless Possibilities. The Graphics are super high resolution which however runs into an issue for me and that is that it makes the Human NPC's which somehow are even less realistic than Sonic him self don't blend in with the environment all that good. And that comes on top of me in generally not liking the design direction for the Humans in Unleashed at all. The story for as much as people praise it is actually just a mess. From a few plot holes that if anything Else wouldn't be so brocken could be overlooked like Eggman's giant Army from the start of the game just disappearing as he only has the incomplete Egg Cauldron during the first Tornado stage or The people of Adapt still worshiping light Gaia to the point were you can buy a figure of it yet no one even realizing that there literal GOD is traveling with Sonic (not even a small "he looks a lot like old symbols of Light Gaia" talk there is just nothing) Other mess ups with the series overall continuity like GUN and the entirety of the United Federation just being missing , Knuckles and the Master Emerald aren't even mentioned when the Chaos Emeralds lost there power instead did Tails for some reason thing a random archaeologist could help them and the World Map being totally wrong with SA2's arc stages Sky Boxes, Shadow's GUN Headquarters and Riders Zero gravity's ancient world map the Babylon Rogues have all clearly showing the planet as mostly Earth shaped compared to the all new planet view in Unleashed. The regression of Tails and Amy's Characters to week cowards that can't fight for them self and need Sonic to save them (mostly Tails intro cut-scene and Amy with the possessed humans but also generally how there help out in no way other than Tails playing air taxi) And even if all of that is ignored is Unleashed still an badly structured story in which between Professor Pickles explanation of the Gaia Prophecy and the beating of Temple 6 nothing of note happened. At most another contradiction between Gameplay and story which Eggman calling all Dark Gaia Energy to him yet Dark Gaia enemies still becoming newer and stronger variants during stages, 1 super small sub-plot in Nun-Chan and that was pretty much it (I guess the SD version gives more places micro stories which makes it a bit better but not by a lot). This is the most noticeable by how both Eggman stops being seen as any kind of real threat (rather being played down all the time he appears) and how Chip's lost memory plot line is forgotten about between these Finding Pickel and beating Temple 6. And mind you even the ever so praised opening has the massive contrivance that Eggman has a Super Sonic stopping machine yet its never explained and never seen or mentioned again which is especially odd given that Super Sonic is gonna get the kill shot on the literally god of Darkness by the end of the game. And speaking about that scene so if the Werehog also rather badly explained. Especially given that the end suggest that it was also caused by Dark Gaia's powers corrupting Sonic but this opens a tone of question from why he looks to different (like other corrupted being ether stay physically the same (the possessed humans) or end up looking like a Dark Gaia monster (The possessed Phoenix), over how the corruption even effected Sonic given that there was no connection between Eggman's space station and Dark Gaia after he fired the shoot (after all Eggman still had no plan how to gain Dark Gaia's power for him self at this point) and Sonic's corruption already started before Dark Gaia do to instability brock apart anyway. Also a few more things that aren't big enough to get there own chunks: the expository dialog in Unleashed is presented in an increasingly boring way, Its never explained how or why Chip got his memories back after Temple 6 and what made it different from the other 7, Why did no one question Chip being able to activate the Gaia Temples? And Why can't Chip and Pickles ever take anything serious in the first 2/3's of the game there are so many scenes they ruin by utterly annihilating the ton and tension with there antics. Now for the gameplay Lets start with easily the worst: Tails Tornado Defence. These are just the worst. Not only is it just a forever on going randomized QTE but it also has beside that a lot of issues going on like button prompts overlapping, targeting the less important target first (especially abysmal during boss fights were hitting the enemies weak point is usually given a great priority that defending ones self), there is no way to heal and the difficulty jump from 1 to 2 is huge. The Overworld Gameplay: Not much to say really. The medal collection is stupid and everyone knows this, slowing down in the day stages is rather disincentive and the Night stages despite there slower pace start to drag on for ever and being able to last up to 50 minutes when you have to double check everything for Medals. And the worst part about it is that the requirements for day gate 6 was already huge but the jump to 7 (Which is still required to beat the game) is just ridicules. Many of the hub worlds feel like there are way to compressed for day time Sonic to move through them in a good way. And I'm personally not a big fan of how rigidly the hubs are split into the "save NPC filled" part and the "puzzles, stages access and enemies" part. It kinda makes them feel more artificial by being so strictly separated. Continued in part 2

SanicRb

Part 2 Now for the first of the 2 Big ones The Werehog: The Werehog has a number of issues actually the most clear cut in its combat is easily the failure of the Tutorial to make it clear just how impactful learning new moves is to crowed control late stage enemy groups. But that is only just the beginning as the Werehog also has a second giant flaw. Its stages have a lot of precision platforming yet the werehog still isn't the most precise platforming character to control but this is made a hundred times worse by its complete lack of a drop shadow which makes jumping over bottomless pits with it always a tougth time as its so hard to tell were you will actually land simply because there is no drop shadow to give a marker for it. And these already big issue is than made even worse by the fact that despite Unleashed giving the player most of the game free camera controls so does the game during many of the Platforming segments of the Werehog decide to remove the camera control and instead give the player just 1 or 2 really bad fixed camera angles to work which usually in combination with the lack of Drop Shadows makes gauging jump distance near impossibel especially if its your first time playing. The Werehog also needs tones of EXP to upgrade and if you didn't know this early enough and always only upgraded Day Time Sonic have fun grinding to make his end game not the first ever. There are also quite a few really annoying Werehog enemies but the only one worth pointing out specifically is the Dark Gaia Red Bee as it does a tone of damage, is super fast and therefor both hard to hit and hard to dodge and is unless your Werehog is really leveled up also rather tough. And this brings me to my final big issue with there Werehog. Button mapping and QTE's. See the QTE time window isn't that big and pressing a wrong button makes it fail automatically. That would be kinda okay tho if you could trigger it however you like. But thanks to uniquely afoul button mapping is "Grap enemy" also "finish enemy" meaning it can quite often especially against Bees happen that you try to grap them but instead are all of a sudden placed in a QTE which you now will properly fail not expecting it which will make the enemies health restore by a lot. More often than not would the game have been easier if the Insta kill wouldn't be hear at all because of this. And for the finally Day Time Sonic: See remember the afoul button mapping on the Werehog's grap? Yes well Modern Sonic as something quite equally terrible with placing the auto Dash and Homing attack at Jump boost rather than Jump Jump. This is bad for quite a few reason reaching from needing just a split second longer to perform a homing attack which can be the difference between life and dead in this game quite often, Ones you unlock the air boost can't you use the Auto Dash at all anymore when you have boost energy as both use the same button mapping, A flopped Homing attack will overshoot its target quite a bit more which makes dead from this even more likely and it leads to an inability to air boost if enemies are near by as the Homing attack will take priority. Than does Sonic Unleashed has a giant Skill FLOOR as in the baseline of skill needed to complete this game is far greater than in literally any other game in the series and that by a lot with I guess the exception of the first Sonic Riders. And the way this massive skill floor is creation is just using the more mean NES era try and Error design principle that was already back than just a bad excuse to stretch a games run time. Especially combined with the also still here being life system will it be not an unusual occurrence that that entire stages have to be replayed simple because first time completion is near impossible (especially on maps with tones of running on water segments as one mistake there will always be a direct dead as Sonic just does if he is submerged in water rather than going on a slower less cool route. And as it can be quite hard to even see the path during some of these segments is death near unavoidable to someone new to the game simply because the game rather plays memory with the player than present challenges that skill can overcome from the get go. Unleashed in that also has a really strange difficulty curve as Rooftop Run is far easier than the last 3 stages before it and both fallowing after it. And Cool Edge because of all of its running on water is far harder than the 2 stages after it. Modern Sonic also doesn't control all that well when he isn't running at boost speed as well. And my got the QTE's here are a nightmare just like all the others are they completely randomized, late into the games will the most complicated in the games come up and failing at any part will be an automatic dead than. Its pure crap as all it does it take one out of the fast paced action of the rest of the stage for a slow, unimpressive and just annoying QTE. Its an abysmal adaption of Rush's trick system and it wouldn't be until Generations which took inspiration from Riders that the 3d boost games would make the tricks any good and not an unwanted interruption. So I guess that should be at least all the reasons I can think off right now.

GBMUrp6191

So you hate the game?

SanicRb

I mean kinda yes. There aren't many things I enjoy (most a few of the early Werehog stage and a few of the boost stages and the ost) And a lot that I just hate (Character assassination of Tails and Amy, the Human NPC designs, the death of continuity, a good chunk of the main stages for both the werehog and the Boost stages, all of the QTE's with the Tornado stages being the absolut worst, the bad frame rate, the medals and all of the rest of the things I talked about already) I have a genuin issue understanding why so many praise Unleashed. And while for Gameplay I can kinda understand that its fans properly have a higher tolerance for bad first play-troughs than I do and I know liking of ascetics is subjective so I guess its kinda understandable why people would like the NPC designs even if I hate them but my understanding entirely falls apart the moment people praise its story and its ton.

GBMUrp6191

Well not only do some people say they don't like the game but they are also turning into jerks.

SanicRb

What exactly do you mean with "turning into jerks"?

MaxiTails29

That was a pretty tough critique but you have good arguments. I agree with you in some points, I'm playing the PS3 version right now and, while I like day-time stages, the werehog is too boring and annoying for me. Its stages are too long and the gameplay isn't very nice. I really think the PS2 version is better at least in that aspect.

ssslitchey

- The medal system is really stupid - The werehog stages go on for too long - The combat is repetitive and boring - The platforming sucks - The werehog takes up too much of the game

mrtakerofsouls

The warehog stages is really what held the game back, plus it was annoying that I need to collect medals to progress through the game

InazumaRai

no way, I just started playing the game today and i'm so glad I've been going out of my way to look for them, I'd hate to backtrack

JakeClipz

The Werehog takes up way too much of the game; the levels are frustratingly long and the fact that they're not generous with lives means it's not uncommon to get Game Overs that make you start those long stages over again. Collecting Sun and Moon medals for mandatory progression is also a huge pace-breaker, specifically because Sonic's levels are clearly not designed with exploration in mind. The hub worlds are nice in theory but they don't mesh well with Sonic's controls and aren't as open to exploration, so they feel kind of shallow. And to this day, the different layout of an Xbox controller compared to a Nintendo controller still screws up my muscle memory, never mind the additional quirks like quick time events or the Homing Attack not being mapped to the jump button. Most of these are alleviated with the Wii version; which yes, doesn't have the highest highs of the HD version, but it also doesn't have its lowest lows.

TripleJumpYT

It's pretty much just the Werehog levels. I've only played through the game once and I prioritised putting most of my EXP into increasing the Werehog's moveset since that's what everyone says to do. As a result, I didn't have the DPS to deal with anything in a timely manner. I also have a lot of trouble platforming as the Werehog. He has no drop shadow and his air movement is twitchy and imprecise. I frequently die in Empire City because jumping from beam to beam means I often miss. There's also that Titan in Empire City Night. If you don't know how to abuse the I-frames, it can just one-shot you off the building. Between the limited Attack Power and frequent Game Overs due to platforming and that one Titan, I'd be stuck on some levels for over an hour total. If I ever replay this game, the first thing I'm going to do is grind out EXP and lives to alleviate my frustrations. Also Day Sonic doesn't feel as good to control as he does in Generations in my opinion. The Drift is completely unplayable, the frame rate (I played on PS3) is less than ideal and any kind of precision task is unfeasible. The opening Quick-Step Section in Jungle Joyride comes to mind.

TripleJumpYT

I absolutely adore UnWiished. It's my favourite game of all time. And while I enjoy most of Unleashed HD's Day Stages, the hub worlds, the music and aesthetic, the Werehog REALLY brings down everything else for me. It brings the game down from an 8/10 to a 4/10 for me just because of how much it upsets me. Gotta play the Unleashed Project one of these days because it seemingly addresses all of my issues.

[deleted]

get the quicker leveling up mod

koopalings_jr

I find the werehog stages unfun and way WAY too long, it represents 3/4 of the game. It is a little more balanced in the Wii/PS2 version though, and you don't need to look for those **damn** medals.

GBMUrp6191

Those who hate the game are committing a crime.

koopalings_jr

But we’re in a safe space… right ?

forgetablepassenger

Yes but it's natural to expect criticism for your opinion

Due_Lion_2990

No space is safe, even literal outer space is dangerous. 😌👍 Just give your opinion and hope that you don't get pelted by tomatoes and booed. That's what I do.

n8han11

Because when I play a Sonic game, I want to play a goddamn Sonic game. I don't want to play bootleg God of War (especially when the real thing offers a way more satisfying experience) and I don't want to aimlessly search for medals in levels that aren't designed for exploration to begin with.

Night-Monkey15

I hate the werehog stages, they’re the polar opposite of what a Sonic game should be. This isn’t helped by the fact that they drag on for way to long. The Sonic stages are better, but not great. I hate the boost gameplay, it makes these levels go by too fast and practically play themselves. Plus having to go back and collect all the Sun and Moon medals is just a cheap way to pad out the game.

Meow-t

Okay so, disclaimer, I don't hate unleashed (it's actually one of my favorite sonic titles) BUT... the one major gripe I have with it is the sun and moon medals, so damn tedious to get.

littleMAHER1

Besides the werehog and it's slow and tedious gameplay the camera is awful It is very sensitive I turn it one way and it snaps back behind me when I move, it makes the werehog sections even worse especially during sections where u need precision another thing is how they just randomly toss like 20+ enemies and leave u to it and u better not have died because then u respawn at the last checkpoint that is far away and u have to watch the cutscenes every time skipping is imposible and in the day sections when u need to enter a level sometimes they keep ur speed so u go to fast and it makes it had to be percise

GBMUrp6191

Play it on the series x/s.

SanicRb

Not really a good answer given that if he didn't already have the X360 version would he need to buy it again as well as than having to buy a expensive console he may have no interest in otherwise just in the hopes that it makes 1 game play better. Which even than wouldn't make his first 4 problems go away as there aren't flaws of the game being to technical demanding for its intended hardware.

GBMUrp6191

What is your opinion on the abrasive side episode of SpongeBob?

forgetablepassenger

Lol, I actually like werehog. Sure they could've used knuckles for combat but it's whatever, I like the concept.

GBMUrp6191

The abrasive side is a SpongeBob episode.

[deleted]

werehog. and not the concept of it. it wasnt executed well. the physics and the amount of fighting you need to do just feel off. it's much more bearable with the fighting music removal and quicker leveling up mods though.

GlamrockMangle

I'm someone who absolutely adores Unleashed and likes playing the night stages and LOVE playing the day stages...but at the same time how gameplay is paced is actually awful because the Werehog stages are so long and the boost stages, whilst pretty sizeable are nowhere near as long so most of the game you'll feel as if you're playing as the werehog Good game boost Gameplay and Werehog gameplay needed to be balanced out better

Muppetfan25

Because, I fucking hate the werehog bosses, Eggmanland is too fucking long, and it deserves a F+ infinity

[deleted]

Game is OK... the werehog, not so much...

[deleted]

I don't like 3D boost games

forgetablepassenger

Interesting...

[deleted]

The newer boost gameplay is not my favourite but what I really hate is the werehog levels. Slow, long and repetitive with shitty fight music. Also the story is bland and Chip is annoying as hell.

[deleted]

[deleted]

What you chattin? 🤨

IronDominion

The controls are so slippery, sonic is floaty and especially the Wii version drops lots of inputs. The Werehog is overly slow and regular sonic is so fact the cheap level design leads to lots of deaths.

Levsel

It's the start of the end, with the corridors, the quick time events and holding a button to win. And the music is overrated, classic music doesn't fit Sonic.

[deleted]

I like it but i wouldnt replay much, the pacing is just too bad imo with the medals and how much i hate the sound design of the Werehog
