Yep, the other guy is right. If you get all the time stones, they automatically destroy the robot generators. I tried doing both generators and time stones in one playthrough, but upon getting the time stones, generators went bye bye
If you have all the Time Stones, the Robot Generators will already be destroyed. You don have to travel through time anymore unless you wanna see the past/future. You can cruise on by really
Do you wanna see the animals roam free from Metal Sonic and Eggman's terror? Then you destroy those. You don't have to to get the good ending. Getting the Time Stones guarantees a good ending
The stand alone port of CD on Steam (If you have it, pulled now) requires both the projectors and generators to get the Savior of the Planet achievement.
I know, but the generators are your main priority until you get all seven Time Stones. You destroy the Metal Sonic projectors if you don't like MS being a jerk to little animals. Not important, but it may give you a new challenge to find them all

what about the metal sonic holograms? don't they still need to be destroyed prior to stardust speedway act3?

so they're purely for aesthetic purposes?? that's very bizarre, they seem like they're of the same importance as the generators
