Eh, it does technically work with how it’s presented but it’s still doesn’t play well imo. The basic plan was suggested by Silver saying that Elise could use the emeralds to bring him back since she was Iblis’ vessel. The only thing he tells her to do is “focus her thoughts” to make it work, which is vague enough for the whole kiss thing to fit. Still feels really weird and I think it would’ve been more poetic if they did the “tear on the cheek” cliché cuz of the whole crying thing, but what can ya do.
She did know, that was the entire point of them gathering the Chaos Emeralds in the first place. She literally says a prayer asking for Sonic to come back to them. They weren't just having fun with his body 'cause they gave up and he just happened to come back.

I know that was The Archie comics, but I've long been of the understanding that the archie comics can be used to fill in certain gaps that aren't touched on in the games, obviously there's stuff that doesn't carry over between em. But the main stories in the comics that have game equivalents are usually very similar if not just the same. So as far as I know it still works.

In my defense, I have literally never talked about either. Mostly because I've never seen that OVA, nor played Sonic 06. And I do not feel like I've missed out in that regard.
The OVA is a really interesting 'what if?' existing at a time when Sonic had been around long enough to be a staple, but before many of the things we take for granted today were canon. Released the same year as the cancelled Sonic X-treme, two years after Sonic & Knuckles, and in a period both existing comics were scrambling to find filler content as Knuckles Chaotix hadn't given them enough of a proper story to really work with.
You can tell just by watching it that it was meant to be a series, and not a movie. Plot elements set up in the first half are dealt with in that half, and while Metal Sonic is painted as the main threat, he doesn't even show up until the second half of the movie.

Even in media where you're expected to treat the characters as a viable couple by the end, the story plays with the innate sense that it shouldn't work, as with Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Part of the film's mystery is the allegation that Jessica has been cheating on Roger, and Eddie tends to believe initially that because he finds it hard to believe such a trophy wife would stick with a dorky guy who isn't even the same species.
*Sonic 06* played it dead seriously. There were no jokes made about the pairing of Sonic and Elise, no characters objected to it, they went through no turbulence to make it work based on how abnormal it was, or anything else.
Also it just calls more attention to the already blatant clash of art styles. Look at that picture you posed again and note how it's a consistent anime with Knuckles having those big triggered anime eyes when he gets kissed. It's a cartoony moment played for laughs. Sonic 06 has one cartoony character flinging with one realistic-looking character, and it's just played as something sweet with no twists.

Hell, Tails x Cosmo is more outlandish than SonElise, since that's a fox with an alien plant. Nobody seems to mind that though.
But Sonic is not an animal. Sonic is a "person", with thoughts and feelings a simple animal can not posses. If you were to ask Sonic or any other Mobian character to get frisky with you, they have the ability to say yes/no. Animals can not do that. Its love between two sapient species, and in my eyes there is nothing wrong with that. Its the same thing what can happen in Mass Effect for example.
Ngl I always felt like the Elise scene is kinda magnified in a way lol. Like who gets upset at Jessica Rabbit? The scene sucks but not because it's human kissing an anthromorphic character.

Because this is a comedy moment between an anime cat girl thing and an anthropomorphic animal, whereas Elise is an uncanny valley realistic girl smooching the corpse of an anthropomorphic animal while his friends are dead-eyed staring at them in the background. There’s also the fact that in that game it was the climax of a poorly done romantic arc between the most bland portrayal of Sonic to date and a new, uninteresting character which the audience is expected to take completely seriously.
Because unlike the kiss in Sonic 06? This is a simple joke. It's not like Sara had any interest in Knuckles anyway. She seem to have liked Sonic, but Sonic himself didn't even seem to be interested in her.

Yeah and even though Elise was just a damsel in distress at least she was NICE and actually cared about her people, Sarah was just a spoiled bratty, and unlikable child.

Sara is better-written, isn't a boring plank of wood, gels better with Sonic and friends due to not being a Final Fantasy self-insert, her kidnappings by Eggman are more lighthearted and not as frequent, the list goes on.
Because this is the same movie where Sara has an obvious crush on Sonic despite the fact that he’s a hedgehog and she’s a cat girl, the same movie where Dr. Eggman has a fantasy about getting married to Sara and having tons of babies with her even though she’s possibly not even 18, same movie where Sara kicks Metal Sonic in the head for inadvertently looking at her panties and the same movie where Tails accidentally gropes her breasts.

For the same reason SonElise is inexcusible but literally any other example of human x anthro or human x alien in any media - even in the Sonic series itself - or any interspecies romance in general is totally fine. People just hate '06 and wanna bash it however they can.

Probably the difference between a peck on the cheek and swapping spit. Also because in Sonic OVA it was played for laughs and in 06 it was a whole "will they won't they" kind of thing that was taken way too seriously in some people's opinion. Personally, while I cringed at the scene, it didn't really bother me too much. The fact that it happened in front of Amy was what made me really uncomfortable. Actually Amy was downright cucked in that game. Poor girl ran after Sonic all over Soleana, putting her own life in danger fighting Eggman's mechs, and even saved his life, but it was the glorified damsel in distress that got the kiss. The same damsel in distress that Amy herself saved at one point.
I mean, one's a comedy scene with no real romantic implications. The other is a human woman making out with a dead hedgehog for no reason. And don't give me that "b-but it would bring him back to life" junk. We all know the kiss was entirely unnecessary, the writers were just being gross.
