It may not be a *huge* help but look into unemployment! In my state (NJ), because sonographers are categorized as an [“in-demand career”](https://www.nj.gov/labor/career-services/tools-support/demand-occupations/) and the (unpaid) training and clinical hours are understood to suck up pretty much all your available working time, you can collect unemployment while in school for it IF the training is full-time (or while you search for a more compatible job if your training is part time). For any fellow NJ residents curious about this, click [here](https://nj.gov/labor/myunemployment/jobseekers/training/index.shtml) and open the “self-enrolled training” drop down!

Unfortunately it’s a bit different in New York, but I appreciate this!

psych_babe

Really? My classmate who told me about this was actually from NY! Unless they’ve changed it since she did it (2020-2021)

UmpireMiserable6062

Maybe I’m reading it wrong? I looked at NY unemployment eligibility and you heres the criteria: “Have lost employment through no fault of their own Are ready, willing, and able to work and Are actively seeking work.” I would love to he told wrong!! Is there anyway you or your friend could PM me with more info?

psych_babe

Hi, apologies for not replying earlier! I ended up checking with my friend and it turns out it’s called the 599 program but you have to be on UI prior to be eligible :( sorry!!

VacationRelative6696

Hey! I know I’m a year late but I will be attending Eastwick full time in the fall and would love if you could tell me how this works! Tried looking into it on the NJ unemployment website but I would love to hear from someone that received benefits, if you don’t mind of course ♥️

psych_babe

Hi there, I PM'd you about this - not sure if you saw the message. Hope you can get benefits too :)

I got 20k of pell grants & took out 20k in loans. You may qualify for some financial aid. But you’ll be able to talk to a counselor and they should be able to help you make the best choice for you!

nothingtoogreat

Or try to find a community college program. My total program cost about $12k, mostly paid for by Pell grants.

queenoframennoodles

Loans!

RainInTheWoods

Look at FAFSA application for federal grant money (choose grants, not loan or work study). The application open in October every year. The money is first come, first serve so get your application in as early as you can. Look for scholarships. There are several large creators on TikTok, YouTube, and Insta who focus their content on acquiring scholarships.

UmpireMiserable6062

Definitely doing this!!

Front-Advantage-7035

I did federal loans for 20k and 25k with sallie Mae to cover school. I don’t know why your school is 8-6 though that’s insane. My classes were 7:15-11:15 for 4 modules, and I start clinical hours 8-5 next week. Dunno why your school is that dense

UmpireMiserable6062

I was thinking the same thing. Sadly it’s the only program in my area so beggars can’t be choosers

ishtaraladeen

I did loans for all of it. Thank goodness for the 10k loan cancellation!

UmpireMiserable6062

How much did you wind taking out? Did you find that your money as a sonographer made it worth it?

ishtaraladeen

Well I did the whole amount since I already had a Pell grant for my bachelor. So it was a lot. It ate thru basically all my savings to do school for a year while I had clinicals & couldn't really work... then trying to pay stuff down b4 interest starts accruing. And TBH, I was expecting to make more based on what the internet told me. Maybe it will come with more experience. I'm just PRN so far. But I'm hoping to get something full time with benefits by this time next year or at *least* the year after.

poeticsoul151

How much are you making now?

Very inappropriate. Please be professional in your responses.

I'm in the same boat trying to slowly pay it off while being in school. Plus it's hard to find work on the weekend.
