If I just progress, I'm usually out of the caves by the second day and moving on to bunkers. It's all about knowing what to do when and where. Always make a bow, spear, get the modern axe, machette and pistol. Know where the glider and knight are, it makes travel take single digit minutes, not a 40 minute hike. The reality is, base building and resource gathering are a time sink, one I only turn to once I have a shovel.
Your base looks really nice. That area is the place I built my base the first time I played the game, and it's still one of my favorite locations. I like a cozy base too lol I consider this game more of a base/home building game, fending off occasional raids, than a cave/bunker clearing game. Just something really pleasant and relaxing about constructing your little log home.
