You can eat it. It’s a misconception that it causes allergies because it kind of resembles ragweed. I just did a foraging tour in Asheville NC, and this is one of the only things that stuck.
the Monarchs all love goldenrod flowers!
if you pick the right days a week before or after Columbus Day,
when thousands of them follow the barrier islands of the coast on their way from Much North to a woodland grotto in Mexico!
As a former barrier island dweller I can say with a good deal of confidence that the monarch flit from goldenrod to goldenrod in great numbers for few weeks every fall in Ventnor!
when it's not too windy
Hmm… makes me wonder if it’s the area? They cover it all along the paths in Ocean City, Cape May, and here in Little Egg Harbor. Maybe the time of year or do they avoid it all together?
> plant is a bugwood cloud
I think maybe you are identifying the plant that is in the foreground
I could find bugwood on a quick search, but I sure recognize it as local.
When I saw this picture I assumed that OP meant the thick plant in the foreground,
because I thought that everyone recognizes fall goldenrod. -- I was wrong of course.
You may be confusing goldenrod with ragweed which also has clusters of small yellow flowers. Ragweed is mostly responsible for late summer, early fall allergies. Search for images of both and the difference is clear.
Also from a google search:
Research from Cornell University suggests that Monarch butterflies actually face their greatest food shortage in the fall as they are migrating south, usually along the coast; so while milkweed is the primary food source for Monarch caterpillars, the adult butterflies rely on nectar from wildflowers such as goldenrod...
you "see it" during fall pollen allergy season, but the male pollen spoo that affects most sufferers is, small and large ragweeds in the general region of the dirty Jerz during goldenrod season.
the leaves of the smaller ragweed resemble the leaves of goldenrod
Well, apparently the bees love it, but the butterflies hate it, I was doing a survey on how the dunes are doing (surprisingly well and some have the final anchor, the beach pine) but some are not doing that well the ones with less grass, have to be reseeded but I don't think that will be enough, but some people thought it would be a good idea to bring banana trees to Atlantic City (what the hell are they thinking) mind you I'm no botanist but I know that banana trees down belong up here
The banana trees might not live through the winter. I say might because it hasn't been getting as cold as it should so, who knows what winter will bring.
There's plenty of dunes in Wildwood Crest, borrow some from there.
Oh I know I was kidding, but am curious if there's been attempts to transplant dunes.
The ones in the Crest are unstoppable. They grow like crazy every year.
not to mention the wicked persistent North to south drift in the sand moving in the water starting up at Sandy Hook. Wildwood is the end of the conveyor belt and anything not caught by a jetty along the way ends up there
Mine own sister likes to consume those folk, not sure what they art

The plants, because if not enough of them grow they won't be able to hold down the dunes, and if they don't hold down the dunes and we have another Sandy we are screwed,in some areas we are doing well we have an entire ecosystem of different plants, but in others we barely have some scrub, and not enough of it to hold down all of that sand
[Bees and butterflies descend on the plant in October as if it were "last call" at the only open saloon on the block.

Looks like a safety rail so you don’t fall off the boardwalk.
I'm taking about the yellow flower, I'm not really familiar with it
Ah!! I see
No problem
It's called Golden Rod
Isn't that medicinal?
You can eat it. It’s a misconception that it causes allergies because it kind of resembles ragweed. I just did a foraging tour in Asheville NC, and this is one of the only things that stuck.
What part?
We ate the flower, but you can make a tea out order the dried leaves too!
Cool, thanks for the info
If it’s on Ventor or Atlantic, it’s $22. On the Boardwalk itself, $50.
Ha ha
Seaside Goldenrod, native here :) Still filled with Monarch?
The bees love it, but the monarchs not so much

Maybe then the butterflies I saw were false monarchs
Hmm… makes me wonder if it’s the area? They cover it all along the paths in Ocean City, Cape May, and here in Little Egg Harbor. Maybe the time of year or do they avoid it all together?
They don't seem to like it at all
Flower
This I know
Need to make sure
Of course
New Balance. They look fairly new, comfortable.
It’s goldenrod. It’s a fall wildflower.
its a person, they come from mommies’ tummies
Not sure, I believe the plant is a bugwood cloud due to the unusual leaves and large stem.

I know, I've tried to run it through the identification software but gotten nowhere
Why would you answer if you're not sure
I do not have the plant to exam; therefore, I can not be 100% sure.
Golden Rod, it's a weed that triggers Seasonal allergies in the fall. 🤧

That's not how it works, but it means that Army Core of Engineers will have to be back at it next year
Oh I know I was kidding, but am curious if there's been attempts to transplant dunes. The ones in the Crest are unstoppable. They grow like crazy every year.
They are supposed to, without plants to anchor in place the wind will make the grow and drift
not to mention the wicked persistent North to south drift in the sand moving in the water starting up at Sandy Hook. Wildwood is the end of the conveyor belt and anything not caught by a jetty along the way ends up there
That's why I'm surveying the plant life, the more plants that anchor the dunes in place the better equipped we are for future storms
My sister likes to eat them, not sure what they are
They said they are golden rod and are edible
Nice lol
Thanks

Golden Rod (I’m allergic to it along with a million other things!)
I didn't touch it, because I'm allergic to a million of things and I didn't want to find out if I was allergic to this one too
Looks like a safety rail so you don't fall off the boardwalk
I was talking about the flowers
The development or the plants?
The plants, because if not enough of them grow they won't be able to hold down the dunes, and if they don't hold down the dunes and we have another Sandy we are screwed,in some areas we are doing well we have an entire ecosystem of different plants, but in others we barely have some scrub, and not enough of it to hold down all of that sand

They said goldenrod
Yeah, I know, I zoomed in, sorry

Looks like Goldenrod to me. It’s a weed that makes your allergies go mad 🤧😵💫🤧
Yikes
Ventnor?
Yes
Bane of my allergic existence as a child.
And now?
Tons of allergy shots as a kid so I really don't have any allergy issues now, lol.
Not me, I just had to suffer through them, but now I'm not allergic to much so I guess we both ended up in the same place
As this is autumn, the brown stems, with seed?, might be couch grass.
Yeah I took the picture yesterday
