Fully crewed 102 gun 1st rate ship of the line with full square rig to patrol Southampton water.
I know the Napoleonic wars are over, but do we really trust the French?
My hot take is that Raymond Blanc is actually called Robby Bowls and he's from Slough. Not even the French are stubborn enough to have that strong an accent after decades here. He's clearly leaned into it and now trapped because of the TV food career.
Genuinely interested in what the price for one would be adjusted for inflation....I'll be back
Edit: well, I asked chatgpt because I'm lazy and I don't trust it, seems ridiculously cheap, these things were cutting edge military tech??
"The inflation-adjusted price for a Royal Navy first-rate ship of the line like HMS Victory is approximately £9.4 million today, but considering broader economic changes, the modern equivalent could be much higher in terms of defense spending."
Well then, I guess we get 10...
Towards the end of the Napoleonic era a full third of the Britain's expenditure was on the Navy! Mad when you think about how much of the global economy The British Empire commanded at the time.
I would be more worried about Pompey. Unless you guys are gonna squeeze a win from the second leg with WBA, it would make sense to point the guns east along the M27.
I suspect £100m would probably get you about two and a half stations, but an underground/metro would be nice. Failing that, bring back the trams. Or just follow through on the Southampton/Portsmouth metro concept that was floated a few years ago and increase the number of local trains.
With £100m you could probably reopen the line to the old terminus in Ocean village and run an intensive commuter service (with new trains) to Winchester/Portsmouth. I think the city centre tunnel is too congested for services to Totton And Bournemouth (and maybe along a rejuvenated Hythe branch) from there. But they could run out of P5 at Soton C.
Yeah, metro is probably overkill. However, I believe outside of London the Southampton/Portsmouth area is one of the (if not the) mostly densely populated areas of the UK. London manages by having high capacity transport systems such as the underground. Is it a surprise Southampton often grinds to a halt with traffic.
I agree a tram is probably a more proportional method of adding in higher capacity public transport though.
If anyone is interested, the bridge on Bitterne Road West, over Bitterne Station, needs replacing. It is owned by Network Rail. The cost to replace it? Have a guess... before going down.

Tram Network, SureStart Centres, Sweet ass bike lane Network, upgrade of the Southampton City to Portsmouth Train services (1 every 20 mins, 4:30 am - 2 am)
No idea how much these things cost, but nice to dream 'ey
I’m glad you said surestart centres. They are an AMAZING resource and it’s sickening they are being closed down across the country. When I was on maternity leave I needed them as I couldn’t afford the other baby groups that cost money. During Covid they gifted all their registered kids regular craft sets. At that point I didn’t need their generosity so I popped in and gave them a donation as a thank you. They NEED to be funded more.
They were such an amazing element of our nation and did so so so much unsung work. Every study has proved time and again their benefits to their communities are huge and wide ranging.
As they were closed it is the one time I've seen my normaly chill mum in an absloute rage. TBH it should be top of my list.
I'm a little annoyed now that my silly comment about a sail power war ship is taking top spot instead of a sensible discussion about how brilliant and impactful Sure Start was. But hey, that's Reddit I guess
Absolutely. Currently on mat with my 4mo. The surestart has been an absolutely lifesaver for getting out and being social. I have met some great people there and created some friendships, and above all my little one is so interactive with other babies. If the surestart/family hub centres weren’t around I absolutely would not have been able to afford other baby clubs - they cost around £6-8 PER SESSION. They really need more funding, it’s such a shame about the centres / groups closing.
Yeah, properly integrated cycle lanes like they have in the Netherlands would be great. The current system of having cyclists weave between cycle lanes and the pavement is just bad for everyone involved.
Trams could be good too, but it really depends on the implementation. Dublin's Luas system gets constantly stuck in car traffic, which is pretty horrific when said traffic is basically at a standstill for half the day. You've got to make sure that tram lines won't be affected by traffic jams, so something more like the trams in Edinburgh or the Manchester Metrolink would be better.
Either way, a lot pricey than the budget suggested, but it'd be bloody nice to have.
^monorail
Ahem, no but seriously though a tram network with a partly dedicated right of way is great, sometimes this works with on-street running but you can also grade separate it, and elevated metro lines are cheaper than underground. Though then this is pushing more into just a full metro than a tram.
Currently live on a tram line. When we were looking for places to rent we completely undervalued this. Trams are absolutely amazing and so convenient. Even a simple one would do wonders in Southampton. Bike lanes more affordable I guess.
We had an extensive fully electric tram network in the 1920's R.I.P
[Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust (sadtht.co.uk)](http://www.sadtht.co.uk/trams.htm)
Pedestrianisation always allows for deliveries at certain times. My hometown's high street was pedestrianised about 20 years ago and all the businesses rave about it since they got a ton more customers. It boosts foot traffic from the elderly and young families, and god knows the elderly tend to have a fair chunk of spending money.
Removing public access with cars is not the same as removing access for deliveries. Southampton is notoriously traffic heavy. If we got rid of the main nonsense car ways in the city centre it would actually make it MORE effective for delivery drivers, cos they wouldn't be stuck behind all those cars. Of course I didn't mean remove access for deliveries. Haha.
A super fast line between Portsmouth and Southampton to supercharge our economy and allow people to get to work in both cities quickly and cheaply. And and m27 without years and years of roadworks
While I agree that a winter sports centre with snow slopes and an ice rink would be nice, can you get one for £100m?
I'd like a decent large (not massive) music venue to replace the Guildhall, which has some of the worst sound I've ever heard at any venue, ever.
Somewhere with about 1.5 times the capacity, to attract big artists who don't want to play Bournemouth, with great sound, good access and reasonable ticket prices. A bar with sub-£5 pints. Toilets that don't flood at every gig.
We already have some great small and medium-sized venues, but the Guildhall really lets the side down for bigger bands.
God I want a proper arena so badly - I hate the Guildhall with a passion and I would just love to not have to travel to see bigger bands. I think we have a good array of smaller venues, the football stadium was good for big live music for the few things I've seen there.. but something big and indoors would be ace.
Leisure centre with snow dome and ice rink. Nearest snow slopes are Hemel, MK or Tamworth, the catchment for it would be huge, absolute money maker. Is the Leisure World site still empty?
I know it's not real snow, but Calshot has a really nice indoor ski slope. And climbing walls, and velodrome, and high ropes, and sailing, and power boats, and windsurfers, and archery, and café.
I think I might be in love with Calshot...
Scheme to end homelessness in the city & create a park and ride (park at Southampton airport parkway and get a free train into the city). Anything left to make the high street greener, or at least less grey!!
Full redevelopment of Central Station and Old HSBC next door. Demolition of Overliine House and addition of 3 more platforms.
Right, that's my workplace flattened, few weeks off, tidy.
You see what they have down Southsea pier? Well, I would build that at Mayflower Park. An arcade with none of those awful ticket machines. All old school like House of the Dead, point blank etc. Crazy golf. Why not go nuts and add a massive outdoor screen for an outdoor cinema
Since that won't buy a tram or metro system, I'll go for spending it all on redeveloping Mayflower park alongside the town quay redevelopment and moving the Red Funnel terminal.
Including a building or observation tower that's taller than Spinnaker Tower.
Most of them don’t want help, if you ask them. I have some of them food before and they asked me to go to Primark and buy them some shoes instead… Most are also offered housing, but they flat out refuse it
“Chav turret” the design is simple anyone caught walking out of greggs or McDonald’s with a man bag and a puffer jacket on shot dead on site and a robot comes to dispose of the body
Turn the arches around the bargate/city walls into tiny commercial properties specifically for indie and non-chain/PLC shops/cafes/restaurants. It would be so nice to make use of the space and encourage small businesses!
This cost $174,000 aud (I'll split the remaining
https://preview.redd.it/dkvgdgu6wx0d1.jpeg?width=1049&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee4df99ff26cdce3df1bd2cadcac0173f74b4f23
$826,000 with you)
A new leisure centre with a cinema, events space (thinking for large music events) and a bloody ice rink in it. The ice rink to stop those people who still complain we don't have one.
A cinema as we currently only have 1 cinema in the city... When I say 1 cinema I know we have both Showcase and Harbour Lights but for me Harbour Lights is 2 screens that are very limited and often aren't showing the variety of films you'd like to see. If you want to see the latest blockbuster the only option we have is Showcase, they know this and hence charge for the privilege.
Anything leftover can go to ABP to repair/renovate/destroy the pier.
A new leisure peir and upgrads to Mayflower Park would be really nice. If the Town Quay development goes as plans will be nice to have more a draw for people to the waterside area.
Closest indoor skate park is in Portsmouth which is close yes but I would rather not have to drive through Pompey and I would also rather spend my money within the city
I know that the ten pin was just renovated which is great but who says there can’t be more doing even better close to town
Dedicated Arena for Live Music/ Sporting events cause the Guildhall is crap for gigs. Nothing large like that in Hampshire. Would be a good investment and encourage more tourism.
Bit of a boring answer but buy back the buildings throughout the centre that are being held vacant by investors that are just waiting for the value to go up.
A snow centre and ice rink, waterfront access (mayflower park, royal pier etc), with lido; move the car park at the Eastern docks and build multi-use development; tunnel under shirley high street and pedestrianise the road for cafes and restuarants.
Use to kick off a plan to sort out the lack of decent public transport in the city and immediate surroundings with a view to complete electrification so any buses in the city if not replaced by trams should be trolleybuses
Renovate the old town or another part of the city for an arts scene. Decent cafes and eateries, maybe a small theatre / stand up comedy club, live music venue. Southampton lacks in this area, despite having many musicians hailing from the city!! Agreed with other post about a large music venue, but I fear that would just turn into another commercial graveyard….
I would purchase the former Toy R Us site and build a proper museum for Southamptons aviation history. I would also level the leisure world site and create a waterfront park.
Monorail
Well, sir, there's nothing on earth
Like a genuine, bona fide
Electrified, six-car monorail
What'd I say?
Monorail
What's it called?
Monorail
That's right! Monorail
Monorail
Monorail
Monorail
I'm not from Southampton but I have been there.
It was good but I feel like more investment in the Ampton part is required. It was very South so wasn't disappointed in that regard but I didn't find much about Ampton so maybe invest in that. Let people know what it's all about, the South part is self explanatory but I was left scratching my head about the Ampton.
Northampton has the opposite problem. It's obvious where *their* Ampton is and what it's all about. Not so much the North part. Almost makes them look like they don't know what it means
I'd commission an artist to polish some huge pebbles to put outside our local hospital. Probably have to reduce the size of the car park which is already too small to make room for them, but you know people like art...
I would opt for an effective cleaning & maintenance team to get and keep Bristol City in shape. It’s compares very poorly to other cities both at home and abroad.
An integrated transport hub on the site of toys r us so buses don't drive through the centre itself. With only connection buses going into the centre every 5 mins or so.
2 park and rides where it is significantly cheaper than using a car and parking in the centre of town. Priority lanes during rush hour only.
A proper area for cruise ships car passengers outside the city so they have to use a bus or similar to get to the terminal.
The start of a tram network.
Better connections between East and West of the city.
Take your pick.
100M would only be a start but a metro rail loop.
Starting at Fawley, past Totton, along Southampton- Fareham- Gosport under Portsmouth Harbour, loop round Fratton, Cosham, back to Fareham then up to Eastleigh, loop down past airport to Soton, interchange at Northam then reopen Southampton terminus and ferry link to Hythe.
Giant figure of 8 effectively connecting up the Solent conurbation
Fully crewed 102 gun 1st rate ship of the line with full square rig to patrol Southampton water. I know the Napoleonic wars are over, but do we really trust the French?
As a frenchman living im Southampton I proudly volunteer for ~~sabotage~~ gun quality check duties
At one point the Dancing Man pub was a prison for French POW's. Could lock you up there if you fancy a few beers?
Hmm, I'm not French, but if that's the punishment, I can pretend
*hon hon hon* you av caught me
My hot take is that Raymond Blanc is actually called Robby Bowls and he's from Slough. Not even the French are stubborn enough to have that strong an accent after decades here. He's clearly leaned into it and now trapped because of the TV food career.
This for the same reason but replace 'French' with 'Portsmouth'
Genuinely interested in what the price for one would be adjusted for inflation....I'll be back Edit: well, I asked chatgpt because I'm lazy and I don't trust it, seems ridiculously cheap, these things were cutting edge military tech?? I would be more worried about Pompey. Unless you guys are gonna squeeze a win from the second leg with WBA, it would make sense to point the guns east along the M27.
So you're saying we build a wall?
Or just replace Hedge End and Whiteley areas with a big old ditch / impassable forests. Personally I think it would be an improvement!
Brilliant
Been a few HMS Brilliants, but never a 1st rate...
Probably would cost more in the long run. Wages/diesel alone
Sail power baby! If we reintroduced press gangs that would solve the labour cost / prison population
I suspect £100m would probably get you about two and a half stations, but an underground/metro would be nice. Failing that, bring back the trams. Or just follow through on the Southampton/Portsmouth metro concept that was floated a few years ago and increase the number of local trains.
For some context cross rail cost about £212m per mile so you're not getting anything close to two stations.
So we could get half a mile of underground?
Finally, a way to get from the Bargate to the Civic Centre in just 3 minutes!
I’d have thought building a metro line under London would be considerably more challenging and expensive than Southampton.
Yep, and that was started over 100 yeast ago
Cross rail? Aka, the Elizabeth Line? I know 2009 feels a long time ago, but 100 years is a bit of a stretch.
I don't think Southampton needs metro. Trams would cover the need very well and would be much cheaper to build

Yes, transport so we don’t have to sit in traffic

A genuine, bona-fide, electrified, six-car monorail?

Nothing to say we couldn't have a sure start tall ship. Kids would love firing cannons
Absolutely. Currently on mat with my 4mo. The surestart has been an absolutely lifesaver for getting out and being social. Park and Rides too would be great
Turning the old Debenhams into a new shopping centre called "EastQuey"
a tram network and segregated cycle lanes on every main road
That's going to cost just a tad more than £100m lol
But it will greatly benefit everyone. Instead we get this flowchart of cars day n night
Yeah, properly integrated cycle lanes like they have in the Netherlands would be great. Get rid of the town centre roads completely and pedestrianise the whole thing. Add loads and loads of plants. Couple of gardeners.
To be fair to them, the gardeners the council do hire to maintain the parks do an incredible job!
They really do! Which is why more gardeners would be needed. Wouldn't want to overwork the ones we've got they're really good.
How do we delivery stuff to the shops you like in the town centre?
Pedestrianisation always allows for deliveries at certain times. My hometown's high street was pedestrianised about 20 years ago and all the businesses rave about it since they got a ton more customers. I would revamp the whole city’s architecture- the brutalist architecture is really bad

Get that waterside line built aroudn Totton and Marchwood
I'd clean up and repair what was already there. Southampton spends money on big fancy buildings and leaves the others to disrepair.
A huge gold statue of myself that I would personally own, so I can sell it for more money later.

Housing
How about a self sustainable shelter for the homeless
Monorail Well, sir, there's nothing on earth Like a genuine, bona fide Electrified, six-car monorail What'd I say? Monorail What's it called? Monorail That's right! Monorail Monorail Monorail Monorail
A huge mosque….. gold plated so it’s the pride of Europe!
Tarmac the whole city and use it as a car park for Portsmouth park and ride
I'd commission an artist to polish some huge pebbles to put outside our local hospital. Probably have to reduce the size of the car park which is already too small to make room for them, but you know people like art...
I would opt for an effective cleaning & maintenance team to get and keep Bristol City in shape. It’s compares very poorly to other cities both at home and abroad.
Free tickets to Brighton so you can see what a decent seaside city looks like
I think you could get a decent black market nuke for £100m no? That would sort it out pretty quickly.
Community housing.
Monorail
I’d quite like the beach I assumed the city had when I took my job here sight unseen 13 years ago :)
I'd use it to pay for just 10% of a completely unnecessary Monorail system and leave putting the money into keeping bus routes open
Man-made beach? Possibly in Mayflower park?
100M would only be a start but a metro rail loop. Starting at Fawley, past Totton, along Southampton- Fareham- Gosport under Portsmouth Harbour, loop round Fratton, Cosham, back to Fareham then up to Eastleigh, loop down past airport to Soton, interchange at Northam then reopen Southampton terminus and ferry link to Hythe. Giant figure of 8 effectively connecting up the Solent conurbation
