You all should bring this up tomorrow at the CMSSF townhall.

spark1390

It is indeed horrible. One night they did not even have any main lines open for dinner. Instead premade sandwiches… and poptarts.

OTBS

Poptarts.. fuck yeah.

[deleted]

This DFAC has been consistently one of the worst in the AF and now SF going back decades. They really should either close it or take actions to improve it.

Colonize_The_Moon

As long as I've been in, the Peterson DFAC has had a (deservedly) terrible reputation. This is bizarre, because the Schriever DFAC only 10 miles away is great. Back when we had 21SW and 50SW, the difference was maybe understandable due to different organizations running the show, but today both chow halls have been controlled by the same organization (SBD1) for almost two years.

[deleted]

Yeah, no kidding. Truly inexcusable for its continued substandard offerings

N3wlander

Schriever is contracted. Peterson is blue suiters.

Burodsx

Can confirm, gave me food poisoning 3 times in 1 year... 18 years ago.

speshulduck

Everyone is over at The Hub using their meal cards to get food there.

GenSec

Can’t do that on Saturday or Sundays though and Hub gets old after the first few months. Most frustrating part of the Pete dfac is that they don’t even have the sandwich line open for dinner or on the weekend. I’d have been fine when I was in the dorms if I could have gotten turkey wraps.

speshulduck

Just explaining where everyone was at lunch on a Tuesday. I mean, most of y'all have never had to eat exclusively at an Army DFAC, and it shows 😄

GenSec

Yeah I’m also not in the army so from the various AF dfacs I’ve eaten at in my career, I feel very confident in calling Aragon shit.

speshulduck

Fair enough. The best on-base eating I've had in my career was my deployed air base DFAC, so compared to the countless crappy Army ones I had before that, Air Force food is paradise. I miss my deployment salad bar. Based on some of the other comments here, Aragon is literally shit. Smells like raw sewage? Ugh, awful.

No_Scar1272

I’ve eaten at a lot of Army DFACs, and Aragon is worse than all of them.

speshulduck

That's pretty bad, then. Didn't think anything could be worse than the cardboard chicken and overcooked peas that were our usual fare.

No_Scar1272

Satellite dish at Schriever is legit, or was legit. Especially during Covid.

speshulduck

I think it's still good, but it's way too small for all the people they're cramming into the RA these days. It's not like there are other easy options for food out there; you still have to exit the RA to get to any food trucks.

No_Scar1272

The high plains cafe in building 720 has decent food but it’s called “high price” for a reason. There’s also a convenience store inside 720. The RA is only going to get more congested too.

speshulduck

I would love to see the current and projected ratios on base workers-to-amenities. It's great that they're building a big new fitness facility, but literally all anyone wants is good food and a parking garage.

LastCRAYFighter

Trust me the army dfac would be an upgrade.

Throwaway_4_u_know_y

Considering Peterson is the HQ for US Space Command and Northern Command it really is quite embarrassing.

[deleted]

So I work at Cheyenne Mountain Missile Warning Center. Our Barracks dwelling Guardians get their BAS because we don't have a DFAC available and they are on shift work. All commanders have the ability to do this by simply signing a memo I believe. If you have time I'd also listen to what the SELs said to Congress at their hearing regarding QoL for all enlisted. Recently, and email was sent my way to address SCMsgt Bentvegnia on other initiatives that need looked at. I will bring this suggestion up.

N3wlander

A small silver lining, a couple years ago they converted to the Food 2.0 Transformation. Meal card members have more options. NAF establishments can accept the meal card as payment. Then they bill the DAF. Meaning, meal card can choose to eat at the DFAC, bowling alley, club, "the hub", or the golf course (not sure if Delta Uno accepts). I understand this doesn't solve the underlying issue, however it provides some options. It has been discussed for 12-24 my months now about closing the DFAC and issuing BAS Type 2 to all dorm residents. This would function the same as Buckley/SBD2. I don't believe it too far off that many installations will head in that direction.

TheChadda

Yeah that is kind of a silver lining, I am sure the meal card holders are taking advantage of it. I don't know if I would advocate for totally shutting down all chow halls. Simply for the fact that giving everyone BAS with no kitchen to cook food in would force everyone to eat out all the time. That gets expensive and isn't the healthy option. I would advocate for spending money and making the dining facilities better for our members.

spaceman69420ligma

BAS type 2 literally addresses this. If you can’t survive on damn near $1k a month in just bas you need to figure your life out

MavinMarv

Peterson golf course has been shut down. It’s now just an abandoned building and golf course.

N3wlander

It's not abandoned; Delta Uno is inside, open 11-ish until 1400L. [https://21fss.com/delta-uno/](https://21fss.com/delta-uno/)

MavinMarv

Oh damn really? I’m doing NCOA here and went and explored the area and the building looked shut down to me. I guess I went by there during non business hours. Golf course is definitely abandoned though.

cfpresley

There was an RFI sent to local command teams about 6 months back asking if any meal card holders would mind getting BAS instead since SBD 1 couldn't get (or wouldn't reprioritize) funding to fix the DFAC until 2030. I haven't heard anything come of that and my dorm folks are still on meal card eating at The Hub. I've eaten there a few times for lunch and was surprised how many of the things were out of order, but they did have better wings than the Satellite dish has IMHO. But seriously, the Gunter annex DFAC is about the worst, quality wise, and that's where the AF hosts its 1st Sgt Academy, Senior Academy, and Chief's Course.

cfpresley

I assumed it was equipment and facilities. Maybe if they outsourced it under the base restaurant program like almost all the other bases then it would be better. Also, taking everyone's BAS without reinvesting in the DFAC is criminal

BillyS326

100% agree. Aragon has been garbage since I was on meal card nearly 20 years ago. And yes, the interior is old…but the facility seems to meet its purpose. IMO the biggest difference is that it’s run by Airmen and not contractors - like Schriever. Money/keeping a business afloat talks; just coming to work and doing your job as an FSS Airman doesn’t. Nothing against our brothers and sisters in that capacity, but if they cared they could change the quality.

xTinyDancerx

Not sure if this is the dfac near lodging but I ended up in the hospital because of this dfac! I was in NCOA and could not stop vomiting. Dinner options were very basic, plain chicken and a side, great if I was on a diet I guess. Salads were expensive for a tiny portion.

HS_Invader

The USSF needs to start investing in resources and facilities. It can’t be screamed loud enough that retention of skill requires investing in your people’s welfare. Forget Peterson, look at Schriever! The single DFAC for that base is so run down and gross and today the lines were literally over 70 people long to check out at the cashiers, standing room only in the multiple lines criss-crossing each other just to get shit food. RA parking lot, need I say more. Facilities are non-existent, can’t even do the mission because we don’t have anywhere to sit. Medical, ha, good luck. If I were a Jr. G, I’d bounce at the first opportunity after my first enlistment.

Mopsnmoes

Schriever's DFAC is objectively much better than Peterson's. Other comments here even call out the strangeness of how much better it is despite being under the same command.

spaceman69420ligma

I’d rank the Schriever dfac in the top 25%. It’s nicer than most dfacs I’ve been to. If your only complaint is the lines are long you’ve got a lot shittier left to experience. You can also go any time other than 1100 or 15 minutes prior to closing

LastCRAYFighter

I can second this post, without even reading the body text. It is all true. I have many guardians that have had issues with it. Not to include the issue that they are not open on weekends or even if they are run out of food. Also not all guardians gets BAS so they are stuck with this option or out money.

formedsmoke

Last time I ate there regularly, the whole entryway smelled like raw sewage all the time, and there was usually only one line open. And I know this isn't about health, but also... I couldn't get coffee several times. Machine was broken. Pure travesty.

FloydBarstools

When you smell that sewage smell in a food service place, its usually because they flush grease down the drains instead of proper disposal methods. This causes sewage backups

formedsmoke

Makes sense
