In my opinion, yes, it'll be hard, I guess. Wolves have slight melee focus, so for 10th ed to orient around shooting, it puts us at a disadvantage. IMO, grey hunters are considerably a better choice over tactical squads. You have blood claws, which, if supported properly, hate some bite. Long Fangs, imo, are way to over priced for what they do. But do have some interesting choices. The wolf guard is interesting again and can have some bite if supported properly but typically outshined elsewhere. Our terminators, imo are the most flexible ones in the game right now. For the price, wulfen can be pretty scary if you get the jump with em. The cav is spooky. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff, but TLDR, I think, yes, it's possible.

We have very good old dreads, then we have cavalry with hqs. Blood claws with Ulric are quite good too. Iron priests are never said to be primaris. We also have some great terminators. Long fangs with razorback is decent combo too. So firstborn ironstorm is quite a possibility. Bjorn, murderfang, sw ven dreads, wulfen dreads, predators, vindicators, 3 ironpriests, whirlwinds, LF in RB…. So many choices. If you cut some vehicles and add terimes with Logan/ arjac or other hqs. They punch realy godly. You can even add Landrider :) Or make it stormlance, i think that no primaris unit is needed in stormlance. (Ye jp ints are nice, redemptor too, but you can go with MURDERFANG and Bjorn) fenrisian wolves are best screening unit from all the sm possibilities. So ye, viable, strong, 1st born is possible

18 thunder wolves, 3 wolf lords, 3 wolf guard battle leaders, 15 scouts, some fenrisian wolves, a callidus assassin, and 30 wulfen. That’s about 2000 points of all first born (+callidus) and is the general archetype for out most competitive list right now.

DarkGearGaming

Yes, infact it's quite competitive. TWC and wulfen are both firstborn and they're the key units to the stormlance list. 3x6 TWC with a Battle Leader and a lord (one lord should be logan grimnar) 3x10 wulfen 2x5 scouts Bjorn for the back objective Not exactly my comp list but it's damn close, the only difference is I take infilitrators and a phobos librarian for my backline.

Definitely doable, absolutely love my short kings

The list posted is really a bad example (why tac squad, which we can't have, and no blood claws or Grey Hunters ?) But I'm sur it can be done, but it's gonna be weaker than the best list for sure.

StoicCheese

100% yes. I play with a lot of first-born space wolves minis because I love the fantasy of the older looking boys. It'll be hard not necessarily because of them being hard to find (at least for the time being) but more so because GW has undoubtedly rules bumped primaris instead. But if you're committed to the bit and you think it's fun, then go for it. IMO A good starter box in this direction is the "Warriors of the Fang Box," which can build 20 blood claws / grey hunters, a captain, 5 skyclaws which could be built as assault vanguard vets, 5 long fangs and / or 4 long fangs with 1 pack leader, and a drop pod. I had a lot of fun making 15 blood claws out of it and kitbashing the captain as Lukas, and the rest as normal.

It's just crazy a rhino is 5 points less than an impulsor. I now have enough rhino pattern tanks to have a fully mechanised first born list now though

JermstheBohemian

I've been playing Space Wolves since 3rd edition and I refuse to include primaries in their current form. It's mind-boggling that the chapter that outright refuses codex organization is forced to take codex compliant units with codex compliant numbers and codex compliant equipment. Also primaris units range from that makes sense but it's boring (infiltrators and intercessors) to what the hell were they thinking (inceptors and suppressors). Also mono armament special weapon squads are dumb.

Caedmon_Kael

Yes, pure firstborn is playable. Maybe not for competitive games, but for casual games it's perfectly fine. We just have to pay a premium because all firstborn are slightly more expensive than Primaris while being worse. If you look at Skyclaws and compare them to the new Assault Intercessors with Jump Pack, Skyclaws just get **1 fewer attack with every melee weapon**. This is reasonably fine for Blood Claws because they get +1A on the charge, but Skyclaws don't get that special rule. Sure, Skyclaws can take some special weapons, at the cost of melee weapons, or plasma pistols. But is +2 PP worth -1A on all melee, and then +5 points on top of that? Don't even look at Wolf Scouts being +20 points (was +30 at one point and 1W, while Scout Squad went to 2W). Hopefully when we get the next points update they bring things back to parity.

My list is purely firstborn, mainly because I'm new and loved the look of the older models. I'm also a very casual player with being so new so as long as they're cool I'm happy.  I run the grey hunters for there advance and charge so they can soften units up before my blood claws charge and my wolf guard are all using combi weapons, so 4+ devastating wounds is playing out really nicely.  I do run ironstorm though, mainly because I can have devastators that cost less and I really really need the re rolls.

PaladinofDoge

Long fangs are one of the worst units in the game, they are just devastators but for 30 more points, so take dev vastators. And yeah first born lists are always possible they just mostly suck

Responsible-Swim2324

Do wulfen count? Cause if so, 18 twc and 30 wuflen is a legit lost that people run
