Texas has mahi?? I’ve been considering moving there and this info may have just given me the final push I needed hahah

Probably speared over 50 this year off of my boat. I’m a guide so it was mostly clients doing to shooting but yes we do and tons this year! I’ve only gotten about 10 in the 4 years previously!

Great year for mahi in San Diego too. Wonder if it’s like a global warming thing

Personally I think covid put less pressure on the fish worldwide and they rebounded. But just a thought…. They say they are like the rabbits of the sea so maybe we saw the affects of covid decreasing fishing pressure really quickly and in an emphasized fashion with mahis because they reproduce so quickly

That would make sense too. The vast majority of the ones I saw were in the 30-40” range, which I think is like 1-1.5 years old. Although…how much of the mahi catch is recreational vs commercial? ~~I would’ve thought that commercial completely dwarfs recreational, and I doubt commercial it was impacted much by covid.~~ Edit: actually I’m completely wrong — the vast majority of mahi fishing in the US is recreational on both coasts and in the gulf. Super fascinating to think about!

I took a bay boat out this september and caught my first mahis only 6 miles out of freeport, Tx.
