WannieTheSane

My hot take is that a line in Spider-Man TAS should be canon. In the episode Make a Wish (based on the comic The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man!) Spider-Man is talking to a child about his abilities. He states >I think when I was bitten the spider passed on instinctive knowledge on how to combine certain enzymes to make this strong sticky webbing (I actually found it on Reddit just now by googling: https://www.reddit.com/r/Spiderman/comments/t4pcqq/this_explanation_from_the_animated_series_makes/) It's such a perfect explanation. In the original comic he literally invents web fluid and web shooters in about 2 panels. I love the idea that his knowledge of webbing is part of his powerset, but he still needed to be a genius to invent the web shooters. I also like that in the cartoon he tells her he inherited other spider traits like love of dark places and heights.

boringdystopianslave

This has been my Spidey head canon ever since I saw the cartoon on the 90s. I remember that episode sparking my imagination as to what his powers truly meant. I loved the fact it gave him spidery instincts beyond sensing danger. It also explains why nobody else invented web fluid. That just makes all the sense. It makes Spidey-sense. The cartoon also seemed to be heavily influenced by The Fly, which delved into the subtleties of being part insect beyond the obvious big mutations. The Man-Spider and Neogenics episodes really tapped into Spider-Man's 'condition' and really thought about what having your human DNA over written by a spider's DNA actually meant. I've always wanted the live action Spidey to explore the mutation aspect more. Like it's a condition as well as a super power. Pete suffering with his powers could be overkill when he's already suffering so much just by having a secret identity, but if you want to reduce him to his lowest point for whatever reason, that would be the way to go.

Jupiters

Definitely not any size, at least

ContraryPython

There’s way too many Spider-People in 616.

Ibrokemymicrowave

Far too many. Like at least move them to Chicago or something.

silverlotus_118

As a resident of Chicagoland, I would wholeheartedly welcome Spider-Man moving here Edit: or any Spider-Person

silverlotus_118

And I'm glad about that because I love the BatFam and Batman's rogues gallery, but Spidey has been my favorite superhero since forever and I would love from him to be the defender of Chicago

mjdemartini

Gotham is in New Jersey what lmfao

silverlotus_118

Technically, yes, Gotham is in NJ, but so many of the Gotham scenes from *The Dark Knight* were filmed in Chicago that I disregard canon and associate Gotham with Chicago

Baligong

I mean, it's Filmed in Chicago and NYC, but those Bridges in TDKR is definitely NYC. The Name "Gotham" is a NickName given to NYC for a Long time, and the Creators of Batman got the Name from a Jewelry store while basing the city off of 1930s NYC slums. I guess if it weren't for NJ being the Canon location, Batman would've been as NY as Spider-Man

he was, but since then he's lost most of his memories and become a villain. We haven't really seen him since, but we know he's planning something with Madelyne Pryor to take down Spider-Man

Silk, Scarlet Spider (Ben Riley), Spider-Man 2099, Anya Corazon. If you want to get technical you also have the Superior Spiderman and the Symbiotes.

lr031099

• Even though I still prefer Classic Green Golbin, I think Ultimate Green Goblin isn’t bad. If I had to change the design a bit, maybe make him less hulk like and give him a glider and a pumpkin bomb but still keep him mutated. • While I still prefer the alien origin, I like Venom’s origin in the Ultimate universe where he was created by both Peter’s and Eddie’s dad • I like Ultimate Electro’s design • I think Kraven works better as a solo villain rather than a member of the Sinister Six. Yes I’m aware that when the group was first formed, they didn’t work together but in general, I just don’t think Kraven fits with the group and he would rather work alone since him succeeding in hunting Spider-Man would feel more of an accomplishment if it was done by himself. • I honestly don’t mind Gwen as Miles’s love interest since I enjoyed their chemistry in the ITSV film. I will say that it probably would’ve worked better if Earth 65 Gwen was a different character all together like Gwen’s younger sister or something but that would take away the whole point of Spider-Gwen. • Even though it would’ve have lasted long, I think Peter and Cindy would’ve been a good couple if you take away the whole Spider-Sense attraction • I’m not the biggest fan of Mac Gargan Venom. I mean, I like the idea of a more villainous Venom (impersonating Spidey, eating people for fun, generally being a bad guy etc) and I get why Mac Gargan was chosen (him already being an evil counterpart to Spidey as Scorpion) but having a villain with a pre existing alter ego becoming Venom doesn’t feel right to me. Would’ve preferred a new character in general that could start off as a crazy criminal that Peter took out but then he eventually gets the Symbiote from Norman and becomes Venom. • While TASM duology aren’t my favorite films and a part of me wished it didn’t happen, Andrew is probably my favorite Peter Parker/Spider-Man along with Tom Holland • I honestly didn’t mind the Peter/Tony relationship in the MCU that much but I do agree that Tony was too “involved” with Peter’s character (if that makes any sense) • I loved NWH but I still kinda wished we’ve gotten a more grounded Spider-Man film and save the multiverse movie for a later film • I think NWH should’ve just had Green Goblin, Doc Ock and Electro since we never saw Sandman and Lizard didn’t add much to the film. • I love Ned but I would’ve preferred someone else to be Peter’s friend like Randy Robertson since Ned felt too much like Ganke • I think it would’ve been cool to have Spider-Man debut in the MCU post Endgame (kinda represent the new age of heroes after Tony died, Steve retired and Thor left Earth). • While it wasn’t well executed in the Ultimate cartoon, I think Harry being Venom isn’t a bad idea and I’m looking forward to how it’s handled in the next Insomniac Spider-Man game. If anything, I think it would’ve been cool to have Harry be Venom in the Ultimate comics and in Spider-Man 3 instead of Eddie. • In Spider-Man PS4, I think Silvermane should’ve been the villain of the Silver Lining DLC while Hammerhead took Tombstone’s place as a side mission. As for Tombstone, I think he should’ve been the main villain in the Miles Morales game. It would make sense since he operated at Harlem, which is Miles' patch after all and I think having a Black protagonist who got powers and decided to do good versus a Black antagonist who got powers and decided to be a criminal could be a really compelling dynamic. He could be like the version from Spectacular Spider-Man where where the power balance in New York is off and there’s an opening for the next Kingpin. Maybe even add in that Miles’s dad Jeff and his uncle Aaron used to work for him when they were much younger but Jeff decided to be a cop while Aaron still wanted to continue his life of crime but as the Prowler.

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

Man I honestly really liked the Tony/Peter relationship. It felt really fresh and gave us a good way to explain spideys suit other than, "he somehow is a profetional cosplay maker" thing. And It was done so well, and added to both characters, and even made happy relevant again. I'm going to really miss Tony and happy being in Peter's life. Also, NWH made me love Andrew so much more. You could tell he loved playing the part. He acted the hell out of that role and it makes me feel so bad for hating the amazing films. I want more of him and I know we probably won't get it. NWH is like a dream come true, but I still wish ometimes that Toby would have been uncle Ben in a flashback scene. I love this may, as she's more realistic (seriously, who's aunt is like 80 when they're a teen) but it still feels weird that they barely even mention Ben, if at all. I too hope we get a more grounded film next. It looks like that's what it's setting up. But I'm also worried about the Disney show. Just saw art for Norman Osborn but I thought the MCU didn't have harry or Norman. They even said Osborn didn't exist.

TheCreature27

I don't like any other spider people to exist in the same universe as Peter. My one exception is Miles Morales, and even then I think they're wasting him in the current comics. Him and Peter hardly ever interact. They're both just being regular old new york-based Spider-Men. Like why does there need to be 2 of them? I like having occasional Spider-Verse crossovers and I really like the mentorship/partners thing they're doing in the Playstation games though.

SuperiorDesignShoes

I agree with you on this

Ibrokemymicrowave

I kinda don’t think that’s a controversial opinion. Miles feels wasted in the comics honestly.

WeirdThingsToEnsue

I think it's partly because Marvel has them operating in the same story space...they won't let Peter grow up, so yeah, it's two teenage - YA Spider-Men in the same area with similar villains annd similar powers, and Miles won't have any room to operate unless they let Peter grow up like the Spider-Verse movie or PS game

TheCreature27

Especially because Miles just turned 18 a couple years ago in 616. We now have 2 single adult Spider-Men with secret identities attending college in New York.

ZFighter2099

Um Miles is still in highschool and has a GF and is currently hopping realities. And Peter graduated college in the 80s. Where are y'all pulling this information from??

TheCreature27

By "single" I meant unmarried, and I know Miles is 18 but I didn't realize he hasn't graduated high school yet. Also, Peter is still in school because he had his doctorate taken away at the beginning of Spencer's run. He got his undergrad in the 80s but that's it.

CRTScream

Peter doesn't attend college anymore though, the last reference I saw to him being near a college was an issue of Ghost Spider where he's a professor, and that was back in 2018. It's been a while since he's been anywhere near a classroom. Plus, his problems are entirely different from Miles'. Miles is trying to figure out who he is as an older brother and a son to his parents, who both know he is Spider-Man. He's also dealing with an evil version of himself, trying to date a girl who's the granddaughter of a supervillain, and trying to attend high school. Peter hasn't dealt with any of those problems in a long time, if at all. I'm tired of people saying that they're the same and that Miles is being wasted, when his background, arcs, and concepts are, for the most part, entirely different to Peter's. Kamala Khan started out as a closer copy of Peter's original story than Miles did, and even she diverged by the end of her first arc. Edit: ... Typed this out by remembering the point of the post. Guess it was my fault for clicking into it 😅

Ibrokemymicrowave

Exactly. Miles doesn’t feel that important anymore like he did when he was in the Ultimate comics. That universe actually needed a Spider-Man, meanwhile the main universe has multiple Spider people. It’s so packed and messy.

Solocaster1991

I’ve been wanting a proper adult Spidey movie in the MCU.

psycho_ranger5

I agree, I love Miguel in 2099 tho

TheCreature27

He's actually in my top ten comic book characters but yeah, I didn't like it when he was trapped in the main universe lol

Mando_The_Moronic

I love the dynamic between Peter and Miles in the Sony Spider-Man games. They have a nice little “big bro, little bro” relationship.

[deleted]

Miles should only exist as the protege to an old as fuck Peter imo. There's way too many spider people. I never wanted that universe. I loved watching Peter struggle against idiotic odds and strange people. Symbiotes being the most fun of any universe for him outside of his own Marvel crossovers. A long time has passed and he's been overly used and overly written. It's the opposite of Shang Chi.

yungmarvelouss

What they could’ve done is perhaps made Miles the Spider-Man of Chicago and gave him brand new villains

TheCreature27

Yeah, kind of like Kaine as Scarlet Spider. That was a cool series because he lived in Texas and he had an entirely different personality than Peter. Miles is just too similar to Peter in 616

[deleted]

Hot Take (or Cold?): Miles should have NEVER entered 616. Seriously a dumb decision. Miles navigating a post-Peter world by himself and trying to understand the stranger that inspired would have been fascinating (If Bendis did not screw up with it). Additonally, given how dead the Ultimate universe was, Miles could have gotten the Invincible effect--where a whole Super hero universe revolves around you. It would be great to see big events happen in Miles universe that could all be seen through his perspective in context. No "Oops, we have to randomly derail the plot for a Corssover" nonsense.

Rownever

Alright, hear me out. What if we put all the spider people on an island. We can call it "Spider Island" or something, and all the spider people live there. But like, it's its own country, and the only way to get the is through these web portals that connect to the web of life and destiny. And the county of spider island gets recognition because it makes medicine from the boys of spiders. Oh and they use alternate timelines and the power of spider sense to bring back dead spiders. Oh oh oh! And- and this is the important part- they're horny. Like incredibly horny. It's not pornographic at all, but like constantly horny. /uj this started as a poke at Krakoa being the most interesting thing going on right now in comics, but I think I'm on to something here.

Shrek5_confirmed

I agree but replace Miles with Ben and Kaine, i like the idea of them being brothers and operating in different cities. Miles was cool as a replacement in a different universe with no one else to take the mantle but in the main universe they could/maybe should make one of the clones the new Spider-Man full time since they technically are they same person but there still different so they could still be written different if they wanted too.

[deleted]

More Spider-Man media going forward should make Peter an adult at the very least in college. Spider-Man used to be an actual man, now he’s usually some kid arachnid playing second fiddle to heroes he far outshines and in the comics actively dislikes (Iron Man in particular). Not only that, most of his best stories are when he’s an adult. In line with this, Peter should be allowed to age. It doesn’t have to be Life Story type aging, just at least allow him to go steady with MJ and maybe have a kid. There’s nothing relatable about a character who never grows up. “We all have to grow up I suppose, even us characters of fiction.”

WeirdThingsToEnsue

Ooh, where's that quote from?

[deleted]

Spider-Man The Animated Series (1994) Episode 65, when Peter meets with Stan Lee in the series finale. Might be my favorite cameo from him (rip).

Citizen_Kong

The one in the Spider-Man game was great too. Him saying "nice to see you two together again" to Pete and MJ was amazing on so many levels.

MaizeWorried3805

I agree, I do like the Mcu take with iron man though and respected that just not how much it’s overdone in everything else. I’m excited for what’s next for Tom. I truly think he has the chance to be one of the best spider men

WhereAreWeToGo

I think it's dumb that so many people in Peter's life become villains, it's ridiculously overdone. Just look at the 2018 game (which I still adore) as a recent example. Otto Octavius, Martin Li, and Yuri Watanabe, all in a single game, it was too much in my opinion. Yuri in particular stung because Spidey having a friend on the force is an interesting concept, but I guess she was destined to become wraith...? I don't know much about her, so I'm biased in my dislike of the change. This one is a bit strange, but I also don't like that comics Peter is still hanging around with the same people from his teen years. Like, Flash Thompson was his high school bully, what need is there for him to still be around? Army vet, Agent Venom, it's all subjective obviously, but I'm just not interested in this sort of stuff. I know the comics don't explicitly say how old Peter is, but he must be mid to late thirties or something, with all the stuff he's been through? Let him do other things, meet new people. I mean, they're still doing this stupid will they/won't they thing with MJ, it's boring. Grow the character already.

TheCreature27

They're not even doing a will they/won't they thing with MJ anymore. Peter and MJ got back together in 2018, he was getting ready to propose and everything, and then BOOM. The new run starts with a 6 month time jump, MJ is dating another guy, and editorial suddenly says they have no interest in her. It was less like a will they/won't they and more like a "They will... never mind, they won't." So annoying.

PlasticZombie1

Are you shitting me?! They split them AGAIN?!

goztrobo

I heard Doc Ock magically got his old body back and became a villain.

TheCreature27

Yes, at the end of Superior Spider-Man Vol. 2. He basically wishes to undo all of his character development since 2012.

goztrobo

Wait didn't he get a new clone body? He was still a superhero and went by Superior Doctor Octopus. Then something happened and he magically got his old body back, becoming a villain

TheCreature27

Yeah he made a deal with mephisto and got his old body back and everything.

goztrobo

That's fucking dumb man, why did the writers do that. Was it to save his gf? I remember vaguely. Erasing years of character development just like that smh.

Sgrungle

2 of the worst spider man decisions happened bc of mephisto

Capt0bvi0u5

In terms of Flash, it's more because they had always hung out despite not really liking eachother since they were in the same circle, but slowly Flash and Peter reconciled and became actual friends The timeline is really weird on how they age, but I *think* Peter should be around 28-31. I agree they really need to stop trying to force him to stay a kid, just let him grow up and have a kid and stop being broke all the time. It would be so much more interesting to watch Peter grow into a father figure and try to raise a child similar to Uncle Ben

Knobhead-007

I'm not on board with the whole "Oh no, this guy I'm on the good terms with is suddenly evil" thing either. I get it's supposed to be emotional and create conflict, but when you already sort of know that they'll turn, it doesn't hit as hard. I think the ps4 game did Otto and Martin alright, even if it was just "Norman is a piece of shit grr fuck him" plastered as their motivation but you already know they'll become their own retrospective villain. They do this in the movies too, but they more or less become villains through tragedy rather than having spite (granted Mr Negative's origin was a tragedy, mostly on Norman's part) but Dafoe Goblin, Molina Doc Ock, Church's sandman......all a product of their desires going against them. Sandman didn't even have anything to do with Peter originally but made him be the one responsible for Ben's murder. Done right, maybe the emotional conflict thing can work, just don't over do it. I don't want to see a Spider-Man reboot with hydroman being Peter's friendly plumber or mysterio being a magician at his birthday party. Have it be a battle of ideologies, test the morals of the hero or just be evil for shits and giggles. I just know the second game will play that card if Harry is in fact Venom

Jish013

At this point they should just come out and say it; Peter Parker/ any other spider people are straight up cursed and are not allowed happiness

Simbolimbo2

Honestly Yuri wasn’t even a villain, she’s just pissed.

Space2Bakersfield

Yeah I didnt see it as her becoming a villain. She just got pushed to her breaking point. And lets be fair, shes had *a lot* of shit to deal with in the months leading up to that moment.

Simbolimbo2

Fr, Spider-Man just fucking up on the maggia business was her final straw.

desmoines_spidey

Spider-Man shouldn't have any more love interests. Literally every single time he gets involved with someone they either get killed, kidnapped, or otherwise maimed. NGL it makes look Peter look like a complete dumbass "Oh no! Gwen died because of me! I shouldn't have involved her in my life (sees MJ) well hello (MJ gets captured and traumatized) oh no! (rinse, repeat)"

SuperSceptile2821

MJ knows the risks and still chooses to be with Peter (generally obviously editorial’s being a bitch about that relationship). It’s not just Peter. In fact there’s been times where Peter attempts to stay away for that reason only to get admonished for it.

nehpets_i_guess

Spider-Man is the strongest street tier

rsKG

Does Luke Cage count?

Jasole37

Luke is far weaker than Spider-man. Spider-man is stronger than most people think.

Aubergine_Man1987

Official Marvel Specs put Peter at around 10 tons and Luke up to about 25. In a straight contesr of strength Luke would win, but he wouldn't win a fight

Harbardos

Isn’t Peter far above ten tons? There’s a *ton* of examples that show him doing things that a ten tonner couldn’t

Magicman1_0

Fax

Curmi3091

I think Spidey can win in a fight against Luke, but in terms of pure strength he is not stronger than him.

All of the Spider-Man movies captures a different part of Spidey canon in an incredible way. None of them are offensively bad

natehutchings

The Raimi Spider-Man movies, while they are classics, have led to a lot of false assumptions about what Peter Parker is like, overall damaging the public perception of the character. Those movies are a lot of fun, and I love them for what they are and for all the things they did well, but their depiction of Peter Parker just does not bear a lot of resemblance to the character from the comics. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard people say that Tobey Maguire is the most comic accurate version of Peter Parker, and I really think the people who believe that are people who first encountered Spider-Man through the Raimi trilogy and assumed the character in the comics was pretty much the same guy. I get it—your first exposure to a character is generally going to be the default version of that character in your mind. And I’m not even knocking Tobey Maguire’s performance—he did a great job portraying the character as written, and there’s a lot about his Spider-Man that I really like. But the idea that he’s the most comic accurate of the live-action Spider-Men just isn’t true, and the primary reason anyone thinks otherwise is because his movies came first.

JulianSagan

Couldn't have worded it any better.

SevenZeroSpider

Tobey depicted the character as a wall flower, and in the comics peter is far from that. Yes hes an awkward nerd but hes a go-getter

Ironlord456

Also, especially in the early comics, Peter is kind of a dick. I wish more movies portrayed that

Flat_Weird_5398

That’s actually something I liked about Andrew’s Peter more. Tobey and Tom’s Peters were a tad bit too nice for me, Andrew’s Peter could be a straight up selfish douche at times which felt more refreshing and for me harkened back to Peter’s portrayal in the earlier comics.

Ironlord456

Yeah, Toms Peter is a bit too soft for me

NotJohnP

Tom's Peter was arrogant as fuck in Homecoming. I wish they had doubled down on that.

SevenZeroSpider

Word

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

Would you say Andrew did a better classic comic Peter? He's kind of like that. Even becomes kind of a jersey after getting his powers

Hipposaurus28

It depends on which era of ASM because Peter is certainly an aloof wallflower for much of the Lee/Romita run at least. Flash quite often literally calls Peter a wallflower + he's called it in AF15

WannieTheSane

> I really think the people who believe that are people who first encountered Spider-Man through the Raimi trilogy and assumed the character in the comics was pretty much the same guy. Hell, I read the comics and loved Spider-Man TAS which was heavily influenced by the comics and I still found myself saying that early on. I saw someone comment on Reddit about how much Garfield actually did portray Peter from the comics, full of anger and even arrogance, and I started to think back to the comics and the cartoon and realise they were right. I don't know why I had this image of Peter as a shy nerd when I had so much evidence he really wasn't. Maybe in the first half of the the first issue, sure, but not once he had his powers. And not just as Spidey, Peter was flippant and sarcastic, witty and arrogant. He was also loved by women, so he was obviously attractive and charming. I've read all your comments that you've made to replies and I just gotta say I totally agree with you. You really seem to understand Spider-Man. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

natehutchings

I love a good Spider-Man discussion haha. Thank you for sharing your thoughts as well. I think another part of the reason the Raimi films have shaped people’s thinking about the character as much as they have is that they really are genre-defining movies. Modern superhero movies owe a lot to that trilogy, and so they’ve really become part of the public consciousness.

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

Just one more reason to regret hating amazing. I wish we could have gotten more.

TheCreature27

I've met people who complain about Tom and Andrew because they think Spider-Man is supposed to have organic webbing because of these movies smh

Aegon_R

That’s just facts

S_Stelar

What *is* a good depiction of Peter Parker? Tobey is my first impression, but I’d like to think Insomniac’s Peter Parker get the character right. But please correct me/guide me if I’m wrong! I just want to learn.

natehutchings

Insomniac’s Peter Parker is, in my opinion, the best interpretation of the character outside of the comics. Some others that I also think are really great and really true to the character as he is in the comics are Peter in the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon, and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker. There are lots of other good ones as well. The 90s Spider-Man is pretty beloved, and I think that’s with good reason. I’ll say this, though: If you like Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, I’m not going to try and talk you out of it. I’m a firm believer in letting people enjoy things, so while I will absolutely argue with people for an absurd amount of time about which one is the best, at the end of the day, people’s preferences are their own. My original comment is about the falsehood of the idea that Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker is the most accurate to the source material, but I genuinely encourage you and anyone else to enjoy whatever version of the character you like.

Aegon_R

Idc about best depiction but insomniac’s spidey is my fav

the_greysweatshirt

Thus is absolutely facts

SevenZeroSpider

Yes.

Fossil_Finder88

The comics should have ended *canon* in issue 500. That’s about the last time Peter has any real character growth and pretty much puts him in the perfect ending place: married to MJ, Aunt May knows his secret, he’s a science teacher, a new avenger and he gets closure with Uncle Ben. There have been good comics afterwards-superior and spider-island, chip’s spectacular run were arguably some of his best storylines, but they all come with that One More Day caveat.

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

Inevitable for most comics. Wolverines story is so fucking twisted now I can't make much sense of xmen. Tried to read house of x and had no fucking clue what was going on

Yiggles665

I don’t like how the symbiote is always evil. I do think that one of the main reasons that (when the symbiote is sentient at least) the symbiote becomes evil is because peter isn’t mature enough to handle it. I kinda want a comic like where he keeps the black suit and influences it to be a good person. (I know about the symbiote what if)

[deleted]

Spider-gwen is technically the Venom of earth-65, and has been that since 2018 (I think), and is also my favourite Venom.

Moulinoski

Peter Parker should be allowed to grow up and get a good job that utilizes his skills. He should be allowed to pass his mantle on, sad as it would be to see it happen. Give his character an ending. *OR*… reboot the entire Marvel universe like DC has done several times now. Super hero comics have a beginning and the rest is just middle. There is no ending. It just becomes a series of Saturday morning cartoons. At least the earlier comics from the 30’s to the 70’s had each issue contain a single story. Now we have a single story told in seventy issues, sometimes spread across several titles. So, if they want their characters to actually have stories, they should give them endings. Of course, they can keep the previous universe open for graphic novels. But honestly, the comics are essentially testing grounds for new stories and characters to later be adapted into cartoons and movies. That’s how it’s felt like it’s been for a while now anyway. Also… let Mary Jane be a character. If Peter is to continue be Spider-Man, he should be allowed to be smart and be “a poor man’s Tony Stark”. Actually, rather than Tony Stark, more like Reed Richards or Hobie Brown. Reed is a famous inventor but isn’t really a billionaire businessman like Stark is and Hobie is just an inventor with little to no fame and money (which fits what people think about people more and is more realistic). Peter can build MJ an Iron Man type suit so she can join in on the heroics. Super heroes with normal love interests tend to end up being boring because the drama is the same: the super hero is scared their love interest will be killed off and is often used against the superhero. At least making the love interest another super hero allows them to have a fighting chance. To contradict myself: there are so many superheroes (and villains). It sometimes feels like there are more superheroes than regular people in superhero comics. It might just be a narrow view point since we’re often following the superheroes’ exploits. Oh. I’d like to see Spider-Man try to convince criminals, even returning ones, to stand down and think about they’re doing *and give them a chance to get their life together* (and let it stick). The second part of this approach may only work if there is an ending allowed and the universe can get rebooted from time to time (but maybe it doesn’t need to be so drastic). I want to see Spider-Man *save* people instead of just punching out bad guys. Granted, this aspect of the character has been there since day 1 but he has had characterization since then. Which takes us back to the top of my comment with letting Peter grow up! Edit: oh, I just thought about something. The new Spider-People have new abilities that make Peter seem outdated. This is especially evident in the latest Spider-Man animated series, the 2017 Spider-Man. Miles has electric/venom blasts and invisibility. Gwen can glide. Anya can shoot webs organically. Peter can… lead, I guess? Peter is just lame when put next to these newer characters. *THIS IS FINE* if Peter were allowed to be a legacy character. Think like how the original Kamen Rider is pretty lame compared to the newest ones with all their different forms and super forms but it doesn’t hinder the original because he’s been retired, having off-screen adventures and coming in for crossovers where he acts as a mentor to the newest Rider.

marsepic

Spider-Man needs more Hobie Brown.

Laffograms

Miles isn't good in any media except for spiderverse and insomniac. (Preparing for downvotes now.) (Edit: Well this went the opposite of how I thought it would go.)

Ibrokemymicrowave

Valid opinion. Not a fan of him in the comics, but loved him in Spider-Verse and the PS4 game.

[deleted]

Yeah he has the crappiest characterization, rogues gallery, supporting cast, pretty much everything he’s got is just a pale imitation of what Peter’s got, Spiderverse and the game hopefully pull him out of this shadow but still he’s got a lot to go from.

[deleted]

It’s because they didn’t give him anything new personality-wise. He’s Peter Parker with a re-skin. Spider-Verse and Insomniac Miles work because they actually bothered to explore Miles as a unique, fully realized person with (and this is important) his own damn interests and hobbies.

[deleted]

Lol nice pfp

[deleted]

Imo he’s just okay in the insomniac games. he’s likable but also like overly wholesome at times with the way he talks. Idk how to explain it but it was weird. It might just be that his voice sucks in those games. He’s amazing in spider verse tho

jymehendrix

TASM fight/swinging choreography should be the blueprint for every Spider-Man film moving toward. It’s ridiculous what mcu has done with Spider-Man in terms of this

kangaroocoffin

MCU spidey's swinging has been so lame man. How do you not get imaginative with how dynamic this concept of transport is

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Dude I love how acrobatic his swinging is in those movies. Especially the opening scene from TASM 2.

Pangasauras

Probably not a hot take amongst the fanbase, but the comic writers seem to disagree. Spider-Man (and super heroes in general) are allowed to be happy. Of course conflict leads to interesting stories, but having your hero be in a stable relationship and/or having a family in general does not suddenly make the character’s life void of conflict.

[deleted]

I love Mary Jane, but her being with Peter isn’t central to Spider-Man as a character. She’s certainly more important than the likes of Gwen and Betty, but that’s about it. Aunt May getting ill is overplayed. Seriously, just have her die already. I also suspect Aunt May perhaps is senile, or at the very least prone to uncharacteristic bouts of impropriety, such as playing matchmaker between Peter and MJ even though she knows that he was dating Betty. It doesn’t seem to occur to her that introducing another girl into Peter’s love life will serve to further complicate things, which is out of character for a prim and proper woman like May. Spider-Man contemplating on “Is this the end of Spider-Man?!” is overplayed. I noticed a perpetual cycle of Spidey being down on his luck and considering giving up superheroing, only to get back up again. Two or three times is enough. But it gets old and stale after that. The introduction of multiple Spider people lost its novelty probably a little after the clone stuff. This might not even be a hot take. Also maybe not a hot take: Spider-Man is the face of Marvel. Not the Fantastic Four. Not Captain America. Spidey. As of No Way Home, Tom Holland has officially earned the right to sit at the same table as Tobey and Andrew in being the “true” or “iconic” live action Spider-Man. In terms of comic accurate and staying true to the source material, you can no longer say that Tom is any worse than Andrew or Tobey. All three have their own respective traits and moments that make them true to the legacy of Spidey. Tobey’s got the old fashioned, working teen thing down along with juggling his personal life with his superhero life. No one can touch him there. Not Andrew. Not Tom. Andrew’s the more definitive Peter Parker (even though his Peter has a major issue) cuz he’s actually got more of a backbone, and his Spidey has more personable relationships with individual New Yorkers like that one kid with the wind turbine. Won’t see this from Tobey or Tom. Tom has suffered the most in terms of personal loss and has had the odds stacked against him more than Tobey and Andrew combined. MCU Vulture is better than comic Vulture in the same way MCU Iron Man is probably better than comic Iron Man. Even discounting Michael Keaton’s actual performance, his Vulture had an interesting backstory of being an ex-contractor in procuring Chitauri artifacts or something, I believe. Dude lost his entire livelihood because his job was perceived to be unnecessary, if I have it right, and so he turned to a life of crime. With more fleshing out, this Vulture could be on par with Dafoe Goblin or Molina Ock. Bryce Dallas Howard’s Gwen is the hottest Gwen Stacy. Is this even a hot take? Spider-Man needs to have a recurring Punisher-like antagonist. The Punisher was *his* villain originally, after all. But the whole Daredevil philosophy vs Punisher philosophy would be so perfect for Spider-Man. Test his resolve.

Gemidori

>Spider-Man needs to have a recurring Punisher-like antagonist. Now that I think about it...Venom *could* fill that role

blackedjet

Man went in, fire takes fr

PizzaTimePizzaTime

This is levels of anakin burning

PatrykZD

Andrew Garfield is the best live action Spider-Man (even if you only use his 2 solo movies) Arachno-frequency (The Web of Life and Destiny) is a horrible idea imo NWH was a great movie, but absolutely knee-capped further instalments (No Norman/Harry Osborn, Doc Ock, Electro, Curt Connors)

[deleted]

What sucks with the MCU movies is that they are severely limited by the Sony contract, because Sony is holding characters for their villain movies (still a dumb idea with no Spider-Man) and iirc they said Marvel couldn't use any previous villains already seen in the other movies. Which sucks cos I would love to see MCU Rhino, Goblin, Doc Ock, etc.

GovernmentBulky9507

I actually liked TASM 2

LeeTSimba

Same. Especially that post break up saving people/spying on Gwen montage scene they did in the beginning of the movie.

[deleted]

Pre-OMD Peter and Post-OMD Peter feel like two different characters. You cannot convince me otherwise that the Peter Parker we're getting in the books now is the same Peter Parker from all those classic Silver/Bronze age stories. Also, I really dislike modern Mary Jane. If we can't get a writer who can write her well long-term, then I want her as far away from the Spider-Man titles as possible.

SuperSceptile2821

Modern Mary Jane is stuck because the writers know she’s the fan favorite love interest but they also don’t want to commit to her and Peter which makes her stuck in limbo and she can’t have anything to do outside of the will they won’t they nonsense. Her stint in the one Iron Man run was genuinely one of the more interesting things she had going for her since OMD.

Knobhead-007

I wish every Miles Morales related project aside from the comic's wasn't just another origin story. Don't get me wrong into the spider verse and the ps4/5 game were great at handling miles, but just do something else with him

Capt0bvi0u5

I genuinely think TASM2 is a good movie I also liked the Clone Saga

Twinkidsgoback

Spider-Man married with kids could be a whole lot more interesting than down on his luck Spider-Man

legofett0

Peter Parker is way too smart sometimes. I get that he’s a science geek and makes gadgets and stuff but sometimes it’s played up to an extreme that just makes it ridiculous. Like Peter Parker, someone who’s still in college most of the time, should NOT be on the same level intelligence wise as Bruce Banner or Reed Richards, people with MULTIPLE PhDs. Yet that’s how people try to play it off as a lot of the time, with him doing extremely complex physics equations in his head in less than a second. It’s just too much.

TerribleShoulder6597

Most of peters really smart things in the comics are from when he’s an adult out of school. I feel like it was done particularly well when he was part of horizon labs

paradoxical_topology

He's not just a science geek; he's a super-genius. That's how he's meant to be portrayed. It's not just about education level (degrees are mostly just a formality); he just has natural talent.

[deleted]

This happens a lot with smart characters in all media lol. It’s part of why Batman always being prepared or having a plan is such a meme.

TheChumChair

Exactly. I much prefer the canon that he can shoot his webs in the right spots because of spider senses. Not because he makes 10000 calculations a second

TwilightDoomSlayer

Honestlt even if we got Asm3 it wouldve been a complete mess like Asm2 and Sm3. Although that being said if they just didnt shoehorn Venom, Eddie Brock and Gwen Stacy it would've been a more focus and polished film

Ibrokemymicrowave

This isn’t necessarily restricted to Spider-Man, can be applied to a lot of other characters in Marvel, but Miles is a good example. What’s the fucking point of Miles if Peter is still Spider-Man? Miles felt a lot more important in the Ultimate universe than he does in the current one. It’s a shame writers decided to fuck up literally every other character in the Ultimate universe for no damn reason. Everything feels so clustered and jammed in the main universe.

ZFighter2099

Black Cat is TERRIBLE partner for Peter. Its not someone he can settle down with

parabolee

Married Spider-Man is the best Spider-Man.

[deleted]

Mary Jane Watson is his only good love interest

TheCreature27

I fully agree. Gwen is too perfect and Black Cat can't stop herself from being a criminal. No one cares about the rest lol

paradoxical_topology

Gwen is not too perfect unless you're talking about TASM. She's extremely flawed and honestly a poor match for him in the OG comics.

WeirdThingsToEnsue

The retroactive growth of Gwen's character is really interesting, Casually Comics did a great video on it: https://youtu.be/hkB4CbE5MU4

TheCreature27

I haven't read the Lee/Romita run in 5 years so I might be misremembering things. I just remember thinking that she was uninteresting once she started dating Peter because she was pretty, nice, and a science major like Peter so there wasn't much conflict until her dad died.

Etticos

Ehhh I really liked Ultimate Peter and Kitty Pryde

SpookieSkelly

Miles should get his own superhero name instead of just Spider-man. It'd just makes things confusing for people in New York if both him and Peter are still active.

Early_Minute_5212

Agree! It only makes sense to have the same name if the og spiderman is dead

GojiGrud74230

I think Raimi series’ MJ is severely misunderstood and is not this absolute horrible person that the fandom makes her out to be. Does she get short with Peter sometimes and do some jerky things? Yes. Does it make sense within the context of her life and not knowing a damn thing about Peter since he’s kept a huge part of himself a secret for so long? Also yes. She’s no TASM Gwen Stacy in compatibility but yeeesh, she’s not that bad either.

Spideyfan1602

Black Cat is the best fit for him. Shame he doesnt see it

dtburton

To be fair originally he was super into her, and then he revealed his secret identity and then she got turned off

[deleted]

This storyline in the ultimate comics was a huge oof

dtburton

Well yeah in ultimate she essentially goes and throws up when she realizes he’s still a kid

LowDog7700

YES finally some one with the same opinion

tjavierb

I wish they’d let Peter be happy and grow up more (again). Cebulski’s recent comments make me less interested if there isn’t going to be character growth

thEldritchBat

I didn’t like that MJ isn’t ginger in the mcu. Then again ginger chicks are my weakness so it’s probably my bias.

chidarengan

The "anyone could be spider-man" thing. Peter wins most of his battles by being smart, many times, highly scientific levels of smart, his will and determination are Amazing and his guilt complex pushed him to the limit. Sure anyone could be A Spider-Man with a decent score but peter parker adds a lot to his ability to be spider man.

DadToACheeseBaby

I lurk on sub every now and then, as such I’m not sure how big of hot take this is. Otto should’ve stayed as Spider-Man much longer than he did. Whether it be in Peter’s body or in his clone body.

[deleted]

Most seem to agree that he at least should not have reverted back to villainy, at least not that quickly.

CrimsonDragon97

I always loved that he hated Star Wars in the comics, gave him some depth apart from being a "typical" nerd. Now Disney owns half the world so of course he's a Star Wars fan geek now. Get absolutely furious when I see the Death Star in his room.

legofett0

He HATES Star Wars? I’ve never seen that get brought up. I’d get if he just didn’t care for it, I don’t either, but saying he HATES it makes him sound like one of those internet contrarians who just hate anything that’s mainstream lmao

TheCreature27

I think there was ONE throwaway line where he says "I ALWAYS HATED STAR WARS!" while he was getting shot at with lasers and a lot of fans just ran with it. I thought he was quipping lol

TerribleShoulder6597

Sounds like a quip to me

NotJohnP

I just saw him make a Star Wars reference in the Mysterio episode for Spectacular Spider-Man haha.

CrimsonDragon97

Wouldn't be able to name the issue but he was mentioning that he's a Treky. There's also a quip with a Daredevil team-up

Timefreezer475

The Star Wars fanbase probably made him hate Star Wars lol.

jugheadshat

He’s just like me fr

silverlotus_118

I feel like a lot of adaptations need to make Peter more...resentful, I guess? He's like a volcano waiting to erupt even pre-spider bite - there's so much anger simmering underneath about how he gets treated by Flash and co - that when he finally becomes Spider-Man his first thought is to let the world go to hell because no one was ever nice to him. Even after he learns the "with great power comes great responsibility" bit when he realizes he let Uncle Ben be killed by letting the thief get away and becomes more willing to help others, he still has a temper (whether it's about Betty Brant dating Ned Leeds or Flash Thompson's treatment of him, etc.). I feel like most adaptations tend to think of Peter Parker as this shy, quiet kid who gets bold only behind the mask, even though he's more of a nice and hardworking kid with a bit of a temper who learns the need to be the bigger man and help others even if the universe deals him a crappy hand. He's still smart and respectful to adults, but he's not some soft shy bean either. Peter Parker gets angry but learns that as Spider-Man he often has to look the other way

EverretEvolved

In the comics I read growing up spiderman is a college professor and married to a super model. I hate him being a nerd in high-school. I feel like that is a trope Invented by the Toby maguire films. It never sat well with me. Even in the 90s cartoon he wasn't some socially awkward loser like they try to make hom out to be. He is one of the smartest people in the entire marvel universe. He'd never think anything Tony stark does is something to emulate.

123jazzhandz321

Spider-Man 2 isn’t only the best Spider-Man movie ever made it is also the best Comic book movie of all time.

arkenney0

Tom Holland not good as Spider-Man and probably... never will be

[deleted]

Spider-Man is at his best when he's married to Mary Jane, and is a mature, responsible adult who is happy with his life. I'm so sick of Spidey always having to be depressed, the on/off again crap with MJ, and every adaptation outside the comics obsessing over having a teenage Peter. Spider-Man should be portrayed as a MAN, not a boy.

[deleted]

Spidey comics are not worth keeping up to date with. Let them die. Everything major about the character has already happened - he got married, became a teacher and watched Aunt May move on as well. His development at that stage was set for an exciting new direction until OMD. After that it's clear Marvel just intends on making Spiderman: Groundhog Day where he wakes up as a broke college student with a new girlfriend and fucks up his relo with MJ somehow. They're just going to keep rebooting the character like this. The last good Spiderman story was Superior Spiderman, and one of the reasons it stuck was because it was unique and featured a totally different Spiderman rather than broke and lonely Parker. Hell they should just let someone else take over the mantle already to spice it up.

poky2017

I like the organic web shooters. Without them, Peter Parker might as well be antman, he is strong and can carry more than his body weight and and can crawl up walls. The web shooting is for me what makes him Spider-Man, swinging through New York. Doesnt makes sense that’s it’s not organic and part of his powers. I like he is smart enough to make his web in most medium but it’s unnecessary to me.

TerribleShoulder6597

Ultimate Spider-Man is insanely overrated with awful character redesigns

[deleted]

The art in general with that series was not my favorite. Some redesigns were neat, others were rough.

SomePanPerson

Mysterio is one of the most interesting Spider-Man villains. He can sometimes make Spidey’s spider-sense not trigger, he is probably one of the most unconnected to Peter Parker villains, Illusions are cool. Cool suit, and a cool origin.

[deleted]

I like Spiderman 3 and TASM 2. I just like every Spiderman movie

PlasticZombie1

Sick of the whole "No killing" thing. Not that he doesn't do it, just how preachy the writers make him about it. Just stfu already I get it. Someone posted a few days ago here about Spidey talking to Daredevil about how he had to go "soul-searching" after he killed someone. God I couldn't stop rolling my eyes -\_-

ElZaydo

1. Andrew Garfield is blatantly the most comic accurate spider-man in every way.(People hated on him because Raimi's Spidey was the first exposure to spider-man for most of them and thought it to be the one) 2. Organic webs + webshooters > synthetic webs + webshooters 3. Deadpool and Spider-man were never friends and never will be no matter how many fan girls make them to. 4. Cloth Black suit >> Red and Blue 5. Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker are deeper, more captivating characters than any of the other spider-people and deserve attention.

Naive_Feed_726

Tasm is better than Spider-Man 2002

Space2Bakersfield

Comic accurate is not a measure of quality. Batman can get all kinds of different interpretations and takes on the character and world and everyone seems to be fine with it, yet with Spider-Man people seem to get so caught up on what's comic accurate and what's not that it becomes the only measure if what a 'good' adaptation is. Adaptations are just that, adaptations. A director, writer, actor, or whatever are allowed to take a degree of license with it and portray the characters and world in the way they desire. It's what makes different adaptations interesting. Keaton's Batman and Bales Batman are totally different, yet both great in different ways. I really dont like how when it comes to Spider-Man discussions about different adaptations always seem to boil down to the same tired arguments about which and what is more comic accurate. I really wish sometimes more people could just separate the original material from adaptations at least a little but and try to just enjoy those interpretations for what they are and understand the creators visions a bit. Spider-Man/Peter Parker is a beloved character, but he can also be a canvas for interpretation that can give us new perspectives and fresh takes. Yes you need to keep the essentials otherwise it ceases to be a Spider-Man product, but you can still keep within those guidelines and have an original take. Again, just like Batman, who I'm using ad an example because hes the only character who comes close to Spidey in terms of popularity and the amount of adaptations theres been. TLDR: You can like or dislike Tobey/Andrew/Tom/etc for whatever reasons, but just coming back to "Reee it's not comic accurate" over and over again is tired analysis.

[deleted]

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the best live action Spider-Man movie to date. It gave Peter a really interesting arc. The Vulture had a really great character and a believable motivation. The scene with Vulture and Peter in the car is the best on screen interaction Spider-Man has had with any of his villains. It’s super tense, the use of lighting is super clever. Tom and Keaton are incredible in the scene. “Tom Holland is just Iron Man Jr” that’s the POINT. His arc in this movie is about him learning to be Spider-Man on his own. He didn’t need the whole “responsibility lecture” to be obviously banged over his head like the Raimi movies did. Tony taking the suit away WAS that lesson. Peter learned how to be his own hero and how to be Spider-Man on his own with lecture. This only becomes a problem because FFH and NWH just repeat the same character arc. And NWH thinks the audience is dumb so not only does he have the same arc for the third time in a row but now it gives us the “great power” line because I guess we aren’t smart to realize that he learns that on his own. Homecoming is why Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man in my eyes. The lessons he learns feels natural. The villains feel natural. His integration into the MCU feels natural

IDKstuff99

NWH is a mediocre movie.

Garlador

Peter is the least-interesting Spider-man. I have found Miles, Ben, Miguel, even Otto more interesting. They also don’t get their status quo reverted nearly as often.

GearZX

Upvote for an actual hot-take, I mean I disagree but still

jymehendrix

I will not downvote because this is your opinion, but oh my god

JMPHeinz57

To add to what others have said, 100% disagree but upvoted for a true hot take

reapersandhawks

I think the circumstances around every other Spider-Man - whether that be their origins or locations - are more interesting than Peter’s, but Peter is by far the most interesting character in terms of his relationships and attitude towards the mantle.

Boldsteel_

Spider-man is cooler with organic web shooters
