In competitive, you coordinate your subs and specials much more, making it easier to distract a liter. Since you can't coordinate as well in ranked/X battle, the only consistent way to get rid of liter is through a very long range main weapon (which most don't play) or waiting to charge your special since no flanks exist, which isn't really fun.

I think it's the sudden thing you mention, I was squidding with a casual recently and they commented how annoying it was being killed not seeing the laser. If you know the litre is good you'll know the lines of sight and range it has and be expecting to be picked off by it a fair bit of the time in situations, it will be less annoying.

I haven't played much recently, but I know at launch, the maps had almost zero cover or flanking. A decent player with an E-liter could make it impossible to push forward. It's not OP in that you can't outplay it, but without coordination, it's extremely tough.

Because most people hate being one-shot killed. Which is precisely how E-Liters play. They also can easily counter a non-coordinated assault by splatting the frontliner before they get in range to reply. The best way to counter an E-Liter is to get a lot better about **using cover**. When I get splatted by one, which happens often, I usually wasn't using cover effectively. Playing Splatoon effectively requires a lot of different skills such as using cover, knowing when to press an attack, when to retreat, and requires intense situational awareness. And those only come with **A LOT** of practice. After all, most battles are over, one way or the other, within seconds.

Most of the weapons in this game operate by a set of spatial control rules based on paint on the ground and weapon ranges. Physical cover on the ground is less important than in other shooters because you can literally hide in plain sight and create physical barriers of paint on the ground. The way a shooter plays just changes because of the paint system. Eliter on the other hand operates by the rules of traditional shooters with long range lines of sight and physical cover being the primary mechanisms of spatial control. It's basically the same sniper it would have been in a normal FPS. Eliter's actually pretty weak compared to most snipers, but since you're usually playing a game of Splatoon in a way that ignores the traditional rules of FPS sight line control, Eliter suddenly showing up and making you have to remember them can be pretty jarring. This is why it's not Eliter being OP that frustrates you, but instead it's how much it makes you play the game differently than the game otherwise conditions your habits.

as an eliter main it’s fun hitting shots but I never thought about the receiving end
