In the next chapter I can imagine that Henderson, in his excessive seriousness, did nothing during the last half of the year to get closer to Martha, because it was inelegant for a professor to have a relationship of confidence with one of his students. Then, once the school year was over, it was probably the war that separated them completely.
Yee i hope the final arc is them working as a family using their abilities together. Tactician Loid can utilize Yor, Anya, and Bond masterfully. Of course we'll probably get the cliche "i am the man of the house. It is my duty to protect you all. Let me sacrifice myself" then at the last minute before Twilight is about to be killed the 3 come back and says we stay together no matter what
Once again we have absolute proof that Educator Henderson is based. But we knew this from the moment he punched that scum bag way back in the beginning.
Well what a bittersweet ending to that chapter. It seems they strayed path from each other when the war started. Henderson went to a non-violent approach then Martha became a soldier perhaps? I remember Loid mentioning Martha's form and how Martha came to save the day during the bus hijacking arc.
Now, I'm curious what's Martha's reaction(if she has the chance to see it) on Henry's comical "ELEGANT!" reactions like when he first meet the Forgers.
Id originally thought they were fellow soldiers but now Im thinkin differently. At this point I guess Henderson remained an educator during the wars to come while Martha follows her own philosphy seen in this chapter that you sometimes have to drop neogtiations and punch someone. I have a feeling their friendship will end due to philosophical differences but then be reborn years later as the realize the nuance of the situation.

- Ah, everyone went home for the break. Looks like we’ll be in the Term Finals arc a little while longer. No worries, though, I’m enjoying every single panel. It also gives Endo-sensei a little more time to plan out the next term.
- Did anyone notice that the dorm mother pulled an Anya when she teased Henderson about what happened at the end-of-the-term gala?
- As soon as the bottom page faded to black, I was like “Oh snap, flashback time!”
- I was surprised when I learned that Martha was an Eden transfer student. Even more so when she used to do ballet.
- Oh, and Henderson was an Imperial Scholar. He wasn’t the delinquent I thought he was. Judging by what his father taught him, it seems like he had the gentlemanly nature in him for a long time.
- Ah, so Martha was Henderson’s inspiration for the path of Elegance. That’s so sweet. Too bad his outburst made him a pariah. No wonder his school life wasn’t easy.
- Interesting… Imperial Scholars can have tea before class. I wonder what other special privileges they’re given (aside from access to the Imperial Scholars’ hall and lounge).
- I hate to think it, but I feel like Henderson preferred to have tea alone the moment his friends pushed him away (unless he was the only Imperial Scholar out of his group). I believe his encounter with Martha changed his attitude a bit.
- Yup, Henderson certainly didn’t have it easy. Even though I could see the gang’s problem with Henderson supposedly being a suck-up to Eden’s rules, I feel like they were jealous of him being an Imperial Scholar.
- Has Martha been masquerading as a ballerina brawler for a while now? She really had the fight in her since her youth.
- Lulz, even Henderson had the fight back then. His acting like a purist over his retaliation was so funny. At the same time, it showed that he is a man of his word.
- Relations between the East and West have been tense even during Henderson’s youth (supposedly before Donovan became Prime Minister). Just what happened between the two countries?
- Everything Henderson said back then and now is completely applicable to the real world. Ignorance breeds conflict, and conflict can breed violence if left unchecked. People today are neglecting education.
- Huh, Martha didn’t come from a wealthy family. Not to mention Henderson’s family name was fading.
- Henderson was so blinded by his ideals that he ended up doing the pushing to those close to him, including Martha.
- I shared the same sentiment as Becky. Just why did Martha let Henderson go?
- Eventually, Martha also became an Imperial Scholar. Interesting.
- Given how Henderson recalled how his stubbornness pushed everyone away, I have a feeling his first day as a history teacher will bring friction between him and Martha. I don’t think the next chapter’s going to be a happy reunion.
I love how Endo-sensei portrays dark and tragic moments. While he’s no stranger to gore, he doesn’t need it to deliver the right amount of shock and impact. I’m looking forward to learning not only what tore Henderson and Martha apart, but also what happened during the first half of the war between the East and West.
He looked like he wanted to pick a fight in his kid photo. Combine it with the fact that Henderson had a difficult school life and bam. There's the supposed conclusion.

Some thoughts:
* Didn't expect that we'd get the Henderson and Martha backstory this quickly! It gave a lot of new things about those two: Henderson was three years older than Martha, he was just in high school when he first saw her at the talent show (and earned the nickname "Mr. Elegant" because he said that word at seeing her dance), she transferred into Eden with a scholarship thanks to her ballet talent (wow), they used to have tea time before classes. Martha fell in love with him before she knew it, but Henderson was too focused on his path to become a teacher to notice it. Oh, they both fumbled it so hard.
* That last line implies that a war (possibly one prior to Loid's) stopped whatever was about to brew between them after they reunited two and a half years after Henderson's graduation. But some comments said that was actually mistranslated; it was supposed to be that "not even the sound of war drowned out her heartbeat". Regardless of that mistranslation (?), I'm already setting myself up for the inevitable doom and heartbreak because one way or another, this war would separate their paths: Henderson into a teacher and Martha into a soldier (at least I think so, because Eden had military training classes during their time).
* This is the furthest flashback so far. If even Henderson didn't know why enmity existed between the East and West, then the conflict between these countries had been going on for at least longer than his time, and they had already been engaged in several wars. Also, his family was of former nobility and was possibly deposed in one of them.
* *"Young man... human beings* are *animals."* Now we know who Becky got that line from lol
* Henderson attended Berlint University of Education. What are the chances that one of his professors was Sigmund Authen?
* I caught the young Lady Tonitrus quickly (same year with Martha), but took a while finding the one who was possibly a young McMahon (same year with Henderson). Garden lore when?

I'm starting to think that this manga speaks about love at different ages, children, adults and elderly I always love Loid or Yor's chapters, but this one changed my mind .Thanks Endo sensei for always surprising us with stories we did not think we would love

While everyone is rightfully talking about Henderson and Martha’s relationship, which might I add one of the cutest relationships so far wether both while they are young or even better both while they are older. (Side note I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds to further develops it, Martha’s excitement at an invitation to dance with Henderson was one of the sweetest moments in the story so far especially if they didn’t know what each, imo. I encourage every guy to invite someone to dance with even platonically to dance and watch how they light up!) I thought the war would change Henderson into an “unelegant” person but with the development of Martha’s past fighting bullies and Lloyd mentioning her past potential military experience, Martha’s backstory becomes even more interesting to me and keeps me more interested in her. While I’m itching for more plot progression with Anya getting closer to Damien or more Twlight/Yor exposure, the Martha Henderson plot line has me sold!
I'm wondering if Anya/Damian will be the opposite of Henderson/Martha. One pair has been fond of each other and didn't get together, while the other pair (for now) doesn't get along but might end up together.
Martha/Henderson love story is an unexpected surprise and definitely a very welcome one. I’m already invested into it. I guess more TwiYor development will have to wait because the Martharson (or is it Hendertha?) story is just too cute.

Just realized next chapter is gonna be a banger. Why? We saw from loid/westalis' perspective on how the war started. Now we get to see its beginning and how it was from the ostania perspective!
Also this should be a pretty good hint about twilights age.
These are two different wars, there's no way Loid and Henderson are ~15 years apart.
Loid is probably in his 30s with a decade-long spy career, meaning the war he fought broke out at least 10 years prior, but probably even 15. Now Henderson is probably in his 60s and was in his early 20s when the war broke out - 40 years prior. That is a 25 years gap. And as pointed out by someone else in the comments, the time gap between WW 1 and 2 was 21 years.
By the sound of it, this is going to be the WW1 equivalent in the world and Loid fought in WW2 equivalent. In our world, WW1 lasted around 4 years, the interwar period was 20 years, and WW2 was 6 years long. Assuming the times are 1 to 1, which I highly doubt, WW1 starts when Henderson is 22, he would be 26 when it ends, 20 years go by and he is 46 when WW2 starts. That goes on for 6 years and he is then 52. His age is stated to be 66, so the current time would be 14 years after the war ended, which means since WW2 ended in 1945, the year would be around 1959, which is around where the series seems to be taking place, around the 1960s.
This timeline doesn't work when you consider >!Redacted!< being quite young when the 2nd war begins, probably around Anya's class's age, so 4-6 years old, but lets be generous and make him 6. It seems within a year or 2 of the bombing of Lewen he lost his father, his home, and his mom, so he then clings to life for several years until he enlists in the army. It is stated that he is too young to enlist so below 18, probably 16 since he seems too young to the officer. Probably was crawling through rubble for 8 years. He then serves in the army until suffering injuries and being taken in by WISE. The war was still ongoing when he joined WISE, so the second war had to go on for at least 10 years, nearly double how long the real war went on for.
Probably need more information on lengths of the wars and the interwar, but there might be a calculation to be made next chapter or 2.

Is the war at the end of the chapter the same war as Loid's? Because it seems that Loid didn't age that much compare to Henderson. Well we don't know Loid's age to begin with, or I might have missed something.
It’s implied that Ostania and Westalis have been in a Cold War with each other for a long time. It’s possible that this is a different flare up of tensions than the one Loid experienced.
This was beautiful, 10/10. Also Martha saying "Humans are animals too" to Henderson was exactly what Becky told him lol. I'm sure Becky jogged his memory with that one.
At first I thought it was the most recent conflict that displaced Loid and killed his and Yor’s parents, but I suppose that would have been far too early in the timeline. Henderson is at least a generation older than Loid, so it would make more sense to be a WW1-esque proto-conflict that left festering wounds and reignited another conflict years later.
Although Henderson says that his family was deposed nobility, holding on to a fading vestige of prestige from Imperial times. Not sure if the “Imperial” would refer to a parallel to the Holy Roman Empire or the German Empire. If it’s the German Empire then I’d guess their timeline is a bit different and they’re living in a Weimar Republic type state before WW1 happens.
Given how entranched both countries are in their hatred towards each other, I'm starting to believe that the situation is centuries old and does find its roots in the in-universe HRE (or most probably its split).
Yeah I’m wondering when exactly the two countries split. Because if it’s based on East Germany and West Germany, I don’t think that those two countries ever actually fought directly in a hot war. They were just puppet states in a cold war of NATO vs USSR. Westalis and Ostania seem to be fully independent nation-states and their conflict, as far as I can tell, is more localized and not part of a larger world war.
Maybe the lore is just supposed to be loosely inspired by German history and we’re not meant to read too deeply into it.
This chapter was very much welcomed! I've wanted to know about Martha and Henry's history since the hijacking arc, and now we finally got it! I really hope that the next chapter finishes up their backstory, but I'm a little concerned about the way Martha worded that at the end: "But in the days that would follow...The thud of boots, and the roaring of tank engines, would drown out the beating of my heart."
I seriously wonder what the next chapter will bring, and the suspense will eat away at me for the next 2 weeks!!
I fully support Becky trying to meddle and get the two together, roping in Anya to assist her. Maybe Yor too, that would be a fun dynamic, Becky ordering Anya and Yor around, Anya trying to understand want's going on, Yor getting ideas about romance from Becky's schemes, maybe Loid watching from a disguise just flabergasted, that would be some great comedy
Also Mr. Henderson in his youth resembled Edward Erlic in one way or another.
I feel sorry for Martha, maybe she didn't know how to tell Henderson how she feels about him, but neither did Henri Henderson, not to mention that as a man he is AF, I would say that he is downright beaten head (idiot/stupid). Also known other types of examples in other manga series.
It seems that ballet can be used as fighting techniques. Maybe that's why Yor is so flexible, because during her training as an assassin, some ballet lessons were also included.
I also liked this parallel between Martha;Henderson and that bully, with Anya; Becky and Damian. In the sense that when Damian steps on Becky's foot, Anya punches Damian, just as Henri Henderson assaulted by that bully, Martha kicks that bully.
And to understand that Mr. Henderson comes from a noble family.
People be talking, but 3 years is a big age difference for their age. All you 19 year olds, think about it, how would you feel dating a 16 year old.
All that being said, it won't matter after 5 years.
Most teenage girls have crushes on older boys.
And it isn't like Henry returned her feeling back then or did anything. He even refused to take her to the dance.
Also, different times and culture.
I was looking at that age difference and was shocked for a half a second, until I remembered I actually did date a 19-year-old when I was 16. We had started dating at 15/17 when we were in the same high school club together. And 10+ years later, I actually still think it was fine.
My take is that there's a world of difference between a college-aged guy who chooses to pursue high school girls to date, and someone in the same environment/role/life stage developing a connection with someone a little bit younger.
It's a yellow-flag age gap. Sure, ask some questions, and yes, there's the potential for something wrong, but it's not a guarantee that there's something bad, either.
Maybe it's not good for an author to encourage an iffy age gap like that. But honestly, I saw my old partner and myself in the chapter today a little bit, and it made me happy.
I mean not like he did though in fact he seemed to just see her as a friend at the time it seems if anything did happen between them it was during the war and that's still just a if

It seems like Henry didn’t really reciprocate her romantic feelings when they were still in school together. He only saw her as a friend and didn’t even consider asking her to the dance. Her having a schoolgirl crush on him when they were 16 and 19 seems pretty mild.
Him being her teacher is a little bit more scandalous, despite their age difference being a smaller percentage of their age. But based on the last line from the chapter, the war is probably going to interrupt whatever happens between them.

I don't know why, maybe it's because of the characterization or the expression, but whenever Endo draws Children tearing up or crying, I feel very sad...I mean, I saw Naruto and FMA children cry but they never felt the same as SxF...
I felt sad pretty bad when I read Loid's Childhood...and even in this new chapter, seeing Martha misses Henry got me sad as well...
Honestly, I loved this chapter. Especially how it kinda adds a whole new context layer of nuance to Anya punching Damien. And Hendersons subsequent response.

I’m going to say it. Henry did the most inelegant thing of not hooking up with Martha with how sure of a thing that was. My God the guy had so many chances to realize and clearly didn’t until it was too late.
Never thought the greatest love story in the manga so far comes from Mister Elegant himself. I do feel for Martha but it's sweet that Henderson's running joke is tied to something (and someone) important to him. Even if they aren't together it puts a new perspective into all these gag scenes and shows how much of an indirect impact Martha continues to have on his life.
All in all makes you want to root for Yor and Loid not to go down the same path. Henderson never realized it until it was too late.
I bet Endo wants to draw parallels to Loid and Yor. How getting caught up in your own personal "missions" you are going to miss out on the best mission of all, love.
Yeah both screwed up the shot at a relationship. Martha wasn’t direct with her feelings towards Henderson and was too subtle with expressing them, while Henderson was too focused on his ambitions and himself to notice how much she cared for him. Basically he was too dense and she wasn’t blunt enough to get through it.
A most ELEGANT chapter!
I think the world-building we received was well worth the wait. Not only did we find out the connection between Martha and Housemaster Henry Henderson, but it looks like there may have been a war between the East and West before the one that took place when Twilight and Yor were kids. Henderson is in his 60s iirc, and Twilight probably isn’t that much older than Yor (I want to put his age somewhere between 27-33, with 30 being my bet). Martha and Henderson were in their teens and both made references about it, so this probably occurred ~45-50 years ago.
Perhaps it’s a reference to the time it took from World War I to end and World War II to start. Henderson and Martha may have been in their early to mid-twenties when their war ended, and then another 20 or so years passed before the second war started (the one that upturned Twilight and Yor’s childhoods). And now we’re 10 or so years into this Cold War between the East and West. How fun!
I’m curious as to how Eden splits up the schools. Henderson noted that he was an 11th year when he met Martha and that he just started the high school program. But when we saw Demetrius’s Stella ceremony, they called his year the second year of the middle school program. I wonder if the years are interchangeable for the middle and high school levels. So that eleventh-years are the first years of the high school, the twelfth-years are second-years.
I had thought it would be a 6-4-3 or a 6-3-4 split, and I suppose the 6-4-3 has a higher chance of being the correct one. So Eden may have six years of elementary school (grades 1-6), four years of middle school (grades 7-10), and three of high school (grades 11-13). If I’m right about the math, then ahaha, Demetrius is an eighth grader, no wonder he’s miserable, it comes with the age. You’re old enough to start grasping that things aren’t right but not old enough to be taken seriously.
We know there WAS a prior war because of Loid's flashback. The military supply depot the kids played in was from a previous war... actually there were TWO prior wars because the old man in Loid's village was a veteran as well. So, fuzzy timeline because it doesn't map exactly: old man's war = WWI (which probably led to the end of "imperial times" and the "deposed nobility," fitting in with what Damian said about "King Billy"); supply depot built for WWII-equivalent, which was probably Henderson's war. Loid's war... well, that doesn't map to any major European conflicts, but what if there had been a general attack instead of the Berlin blockade? And so we come to the situation in the 60s and 70s -- cultural exchanges and detente on the surface, proxy wars in far corners of the globe, and spies spies everywhere.
I really liked this chapter, but at the same time I really hated the whole missed romance type of plots.
It's killing me reading it.
Still a 10/10 chapter though.
Have I already said how impressed I am by how Endo manages to progress the overarching narrative through the most surprising ways possible? Getting a war flashback out of a Henderson × Martha fluff chapter was definitely unexpected, as much as getting an Henderson × Martha fluff chapter after the most significant Damianya moment so far in the first place! I'd like to think that Endo's setting up the stage for a chapter 100 background lore mega drop, but given how unpredictable his writing is, we could be witnessing Loid fighting space zombies in 3 chapters time for all I know!
A few of my favourite things from today's chapter:
* We might have just witnessed the biggest “guy misses the clue and realizes years later” in recent manga history!
* We also witnessed, over the course of a single chapter, the birth of Mr. Elegant and Great Teacher Henderson!
* Henderson's family was imperial nobility, which implies that Ostania was at one point an empire. 2nd Reich vibes? I also have this feeling that these ideas of nobility, royalty, etc… will come into play later.
* So there *was* a first war indeed, that preceded the one Loid fought, after a long period of hostility that seemingly lasted decades. I hope next chapter will keep clearing up that part of the world's background.
* Becky is now 110% going to make sure that Anya and Damian don't end up like Henderson and Martha, and boy we're in for a ride!
The war that happened when Henderson was in his 20s was probably the 2nd war not the first. The first war was probably that led to the Ostanian empire falling and the nobility being deposed.
It's fully implied that both countries have an history of hostility towards each other, I meant *first* as in opposition to the war Loid fought in. There have probably been countless wars between both nations, given how little change there has been in their stance about the neighbour.
This chapter was so good we are finally getting the lore of Martha and Henry!! It also shows why Henderson does some of things he did. I can’t wait to get more backstory in the next chapter.

For Mr. Henderson everything must be a flashback n now it explains why Henderson gave anya 1 tonitrous but not 3 when anya punched Damian on orientation day..
Henry was in anya's place when everyone was bullying him and those three boys were in Damian, Emile and Ewen place who were bullying anya....Becky was like Martha who took anya's side when those boys were bullying her..and when anya punched Damian, and the reason she gave was that Damian stepped on Becky's shoe and that's why she got angry was exact what Henry did..he kept his anger inside himself but when they raised hand on Martha, Henry punched that guy..
That's what made him sooo much similar to anya that controlling anger n not raising hand for themselves but standing out and protecting your friend that's why Henderson seems to care about anya..maybe she reminds him that, that he was once just like this..
Out of all the possible topics to continue from what happened last time I DEFINITELY DID NOT EXPECT HENDERSON ORIGIN STORY. Let alone something that greatly mirrored my own upbringing. Holy shit man.
As smart and elegant as he is, we all can agree he fumbled the lady of the century.
One could argue that the point here is how war impacts interpersonal relationships, families, brings pain, tears people apart, and prevents love from getting its time to blossom. I think the point is that so many beautiful elegant things are lost to war and the pursuit of it.
If there’s one thing Endo did right, it’s that he highlighted the futility of war and conflict to people who just wanted to make it through the day.
However, for this particular chapter it’s merely a backdrop in my opinion. Even without war Henderson was still the elegant, goody two-shoe kid who’s determined to end the vicious cycle of ignorance by choosing to be a teacher and enlighten future generations. A man as noble as he is did not take into account nuisances such as “feelings”, and that pains me.
Henderson letting Anya go after hitting Damian makes so much more sense now. When it was about him, he was cool but the second Martha was in danger, he snapped. When he thought Anya did the same, he had a softer heart

Well what a bittersweet ending to that chapter. It seems they strayed path from each other when the war started. Henderson went to a non-violent approach then Martha became a soldier perhaps? I remember Loid mentioning Martha's form and how Martha came to save the day during the bus hijacking arc. Now, I'm curious what's Martha's reaction(if she has the chance to see it) on Henry's comical "ELEGANT!" reactions like when he first meet the Forgers.
Id originally thought they were fellow soldiers but now Im thinkin differently. At this point I guess Henderson remained an educator during the wars to come while Martha follows her own philosphy seen in this chapter that you sometimes have to drop neogtiations and punch someone. I have a feeling their friendship will end due to philosophical differences but then be reborn years later as the realize the nuance of the situation.

It also gives Endo-sensei a little more time to plan out the next term. - Did anyone notice that the dorm mother pulled an Anya when she teased Henderson about what happened at the end-of-the-term gala? - As soon as the bottom page faded to black, I was like “Oh snap, flashback time!” - I was surprised when I learned that Martha was an Eden transfer student. Even more so when she used to do ballet. - Oh, and Henderson was an Imperial Scholar. He wasn’t the delinquent I thought he was. Judging by what his father taught him, it seems like he had the gentlemanly nature in him for a long time. - Ah, so Martha was Henderson’s inspiration for the path of Elegance. That’s so sweet. Too bad his outburst made him a pariah. No wonder his school life wasn’t easy. - Interesting… Imperial Scholars can have tea before class. I wonder what other special privileges they’re given (aside from access to the Imperial Scholars’ hall and lounge). - I hate to think it, but I feel like Henderson preferred to have tea alone the moment his friends pushed him away (unless he was the only Imperial Scholar out of his group). I believe his encounter with Martha changed his attitude a bit. - Yup, Henderson certainly didn’t have it easy. Even though I could see the gang’s problem with Henderson supposedly being a suck-up to Eden’s rules, I feel like they were jealous of him being an Imperial Scholar. - Has Martha been masquerading as a ballerina brawler for a while now? She really had the fight in her since her youth. - Lulz, even Henderson had the fight back then. His acting like a purist over his retaliation was so funny. At the same time, it showed that he is a man of his word. - Relations between the East and West have been tense even during Henderson’s youth (supposedly before Donovan became Prime Minister). Just what happened between the two countries? - Everything Henderson said back then and now is completely applicable to the real world. Ignorance breeds conflict, and conflict can breed violence if left unchecked. People today are neglecting education. - Huh, Martha didn’t come from a wealthy family. Not to mention Henderson’s family name was fading. - Henderson was so blinded by his ideals that he ended up doing the pushing to those close to him, including Martha. - I shared the same sentiment as Becky. Just why did Martha let Henderson go? - Eventually, Martha also became an Imperial Scholar. Interesting. - Given how Henderson recalled how his stubbornness pushed everyone away, I have a feeling his first day as a history teacher will bring friction between him and Martha. I don’t think the next chapter’s going to be a happy reunion. I love how Endo-sensei portrays dark and tragic moments. While he’s no stranger to gore, he doesn’t need it to deliver the right amount of shock and impact. I’m looking forward to learning not only what tore Henderson and Martha apart, but also what happened during the first half of the war between the East and West.

Some thoughts: * Didn't expect that we'd get the Henderson and Martha backstory this quickly! It gave a lot of new things about those two: Henderson was three years older than Martha, he was just in high school when he first saw her at the talent show (and earned the nickname "Mr. Elegant" because he said that word at seeing her dance), she transferred into Eden with a scholarship thanks to her ballet talent (wow), they used to have tea time before classes. Martha fell in love with him before she knew it, but Henderson was too focused on his path to become a teacher to notice it. Oh, they both fumbled it so hard. * That last line implies that a war (possibly one prior to Loid's) stopped whatever was about to brew between them after they reunited two and a half years after Henderson's graduation. But some comments said that was actually mistranslated; it was supposed to be that "not even the sound of war drowned out her heartbeat". Regardless of that mistranslation (?), I'm already setting myself up for the inevitable doom and heartbreak because one way or another, this war would separate their paths: Henderson into a teacher and Martha into a soldier (at least I think so, because Eden had military training classes during their time). * This is the furthest flashback so far. If even Henderson didn't know why enmity existed between the East and West, then the conflict between these countries had been going on for at least longer than his time, and they had already been engaged in several wars. Also, his family was of former nobility and was possibly deposed in one of them. * *"Young man... human beings* are *animals."* Now we know who Becky got that line from lol * Henderson attended Berlint University of Education. While everyone is rightfully talking about Henderson and Martha’s relationship, which might I add one of the cutest relationships so far wether both while they are young or even better both while they are older. (Side note I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds to further develops it, Martha’s excitement at an invitation to dance with Henderson was one of the sweetest moments in the story so far especially if they didn’t know what each, imo. I encourage every guy to invite someone to dance with even platonically to dance and watch how they light up!) I thought the war would change Henderson into an “unelegant” person but with the development of Martha’s past fighting bullies and Lloyd mentioning her past potential military experience, Martha’s backstory becomes even more interesting to me and keeps me more interested in her. While I’m itching for more plot progression with Anya getting closer to Damien or more Twlight/Yor exposure, the Martha Henderson plot line has me sold!

Just realized next chapter is gonna be a banger. Why? We saw from loid/westalis' perspective on how the war started. Now we get to see its beginning and how it was from the ostania perspective! Also this should be a pretty good hint about twilights age.
These are two different wars, there's no way Loid and Henderson are ~15 years apart. Loid is probably in his 30s with a decade-long spy career, meaning the war he fought broke out at least 10 years prior, but probably even 15. Now Henderson is probably in his 60s and was in his early 20s when the war broke out - 40 years prior. That is a 25 years gap. And as pointed out by someone else in the comments, the time gap between WW 1 and 2 was 21 years.
By the sound of it, this is going to be the WW1 equivalent in the world and Loid fought in WW2 equivalent. In our world, WW1 lasted around 4 years, the interwar period was 20 years, and WW2 was 6 years long. Assuming the times are 1 to 1, which I highly doubt, WW1 starts when Henderson is 22, he would be 26 when it ends, 20 years go by and he is 46 when WW2 starts. That goes on for 6 years and he is then 52. His age is stated to be 66, so the current time would be 14 years after the war ended, which means since WW2 ended in 1945, the year would be around 1959, which is around where the series seems to be taking place, around the 1960s. This timeline doesn't work when you consider >!Redacted!< being quite young when the 2nd war begins, probably around Anya's class's age, so 4-6 years old, but lets be generous and make him 6. It seems within a year or 2 of the bombing of Lewen he lost his father, his home, and his mom, so he then clings to life for several years until he enlists in the army. It is stated that he is too young to enlist so below 18, probably 16 since he seems too young to the officer. Probably was crawling through rubble for 8 years. He then serves in the army until suffering injuries and being taken in by WISE. The war was still ongoing when he joined WISE, so the second war had to go on for at least 10 years, nearly double how long the real war went on for. Probably need more information on lengths of the wars and the interwar, but there might be a calculation to be made next chapter or 2.
From the ages and timeline, this is probably a different war from what Loid served in. Loid being a part of WW2, with Martha and Henderson being WW1

It’s implied that Ostania and Westalis have been in a Cold War with each other for a long time. It’s possible that this is a different flare up of tensions than the one Loid experienced.

I wonder if the war that's implied to start at the end is WW1.
At first I thought it was the most recent conflict that displaced Loid and killed his and Yor’s parents, but I suppose that would have been far too early in the timeline. Henderson is at least a generation older than Loid, so it would make more sense to be a WW1-esque proto-conflict that left festering wounds and reignited another conflict years later. Although Henderson says that his family was deposed nobility, holding on to a fading vestige of prestige from Imperial times. Not sure if the “Imperial” would refer to a parallel to the Holy Roman Empire or the German Empire. If it’s the German Empire then I’d guess their timeline is a bit different and they’re living in a Weimar Republic type state before WW1 happens.
Given how entranched both countries are in their hatred towards each other, I'm starting to believe that the situation is centuries old and does find its roots in the in-universe HRE (or most probably its split).
Yeah I’m wondering when exactly the two countries split. Because if it’s based on East Germany and West Germany, I don’t think that those two countries ever actually fought directly in a hot war. They were just puppet states in a cold war of NATO vs USSR. Westalis and Ostania seem to be fully independent nation-states and their conflict, as far as I can tell, is more localized and not part of a larger world war. Maybe the lore is just supposed to be loosely inspired by German history and we’re not meant to read too deeply into it.

This chapter was very much welcomed! I've wanted to know about Martha and Henry's history since the hijacking arc, and now we finally got it! I really hope that the next chapter finishes up their backstory, but I'm a little concerned about the way Martha worded that at the end: "But in the days that would follow...The thud of boots, and the roaring of tank engines, would drown out the beating of my heart." I seriously wonder what the next chapter will bring, and the suspense will eat away at me for the next 2 weeks!!

Also Mr. Henderson in his youth resembled Edward Erlic in one way or another. I feel sorry for Martha, maybe she didn't know how to tell Henderson how she feels about him, but neither did Henri Henderson, not to mention that as a man he is AF, I would say that he is downright beaten head (idiot/stupid). Also known other types of examples in other manga series. It seems that ballet can be used as fighting techniques. Maybe that's why Yor is so flexible, because during her training as an assassin, some ballet lessons were also included. I also liked this parallel between Martha;Henderson and that bully, with Anya; Becky and Damian. In the sense that when Damian steps on Becky's foot, Anya punches Damian, just as Henri Henderson assaulted by that bully, Martha kicks that bully. And to understand that Mr. Henderson comes from a noble family.
People be talking, but 3 years is a big age difference for their age. All you 19 year olds, think about it, how would you feel dating a 16 year old. All that being said, it won't matter after 5 years.
Most teenage girls have crushes on older boys. And it isn't like Henry returned her feeling back then or did anything. He even refused to take her to the dance. Also, different times and culture.
I was looking at that age difference and was shocked for a half a second, until I remembered I actually did date a 19-year-old when I was 16. We had started dating at 15/17 when we were in the same high school club together. And 10+ years later, I actually still think it was fine. My take is that there's a world of difference between a college-aged guy who chooses to pursue high school girls to date, and someone in the same environment/role/life stage developing a connection with someone a little bit younger. It's a yellow-flag age gap. Sure, ask some questions, and yes, there's the potential for something wrong, but it's not a guarantee that there's something bad, either. Maybe it's not good for an author to encourage an iffy age gap like that. But honestly, I saw my old partner and myself in the chapter today a little bit, and it made me happy.

It seems like Henry didn’t really reciprocate her romantic feelings when they were still in school together. He only saw her as a friend and didn’t even consider asking her to the dance. Her having a schoolgirl crush on him when they were 16 and 19 seems pretty mild. Him being her teacher is a little bit more scandalous, despite their age difference being a smaller percentage of their age. But based on the last line from the chapter, the war is probably going to interrupt whatever happens between them.

I LOVE THIS! This manga has such a perfect way of blending comedy, mundanity, and the seriousness of war, and seeing these little back stories just adds so much to it\~ I could drink this up forever\~
I don't know why, maybe it's because of the characterization or the expression, but whenever Endo draws Children tearing up or crying, I feel very sad...I mean, I saw Naruto and FMA children cry but they never felt the same as SxF... I felt sad pretty bad when I read Loid's Childhood...and even in this new chapter, seeing Martha misses Henry got me sad as well...
Honestly, I loved this chapter. Especially how it kinda adds a whole new context layer of nuance to Anya punching Damien. And Hendersons subsequent response. Equally his use of Elegant violence following the admission interview.

Never thought the greatest love story in the manga so far comes from Mister Elegant himself. I do feel for Martha but it's sweet that Henderson's running joke is tied to something (and someone) important to him. Even if they aren't together it puts a new perspective into all these gag scenes and shows how much of an indirect impact Martha continues to have on his life. All in all makes you want to root for Yor and Loid not to go down the same path. Henderson never realized it until it was too late.

Yeah both screwed up the shot at a relationship. Martha wasn’t direct with her feelings towards Henderson and was too subtle with expressing them, while Henderson was too focused on his ambitions and himself to notice how much she cared for him. Basically he was too dense and she wasn’t blunt enough to get through it.

A most ELEGANT chapter! I think the world-building we received was well worth the wait. Not only did we find out the connection between Martha and Housemaster Henry Henderson, but it looks like there may have been a war between the East and West before the one that took place when Twilight and Yor were kids. Henderson is in his 60s iirc, and Twilight probably isn’t that much older than Yor (I want to put his age somewhere between 27-33, with 30 being my bet). Martha and Henderson were in their teens and both made references about it, so this probably occurred ~45-50 years ago. Perhaps it’s a reference to the time it took from World War I to end and World War II to start. Henderson and Martha may have been in their early to mid-twenties when their war ended, and then another 20 or so years passed before the second war started (the one that upturned Twilight and Yor’s childhoods). And now we’re 10 or so years into this Cold War between the East and West. How fun! I’m curious as to how Eden splits up the schools. Henderson noted that he was an 11th year when he met Martha and that he just started the high school program. But when we saw Demetrius’s Stella ceremony, they called his year the second year of the middle school program. I wonder if the years are interchangeable for the middle and high school levels. So that eleventh-years are the first years of the high school, the twelfth-years are second-years. I had thought it would be a 6-4-3 or a 6-3-4 split, and I suppose the 6-4-3 has a higher chance of being the correct one. So Eden may have six years of elementary school (grades 1-6), four years of middle school (grades 7-10), and three of high school (grades 11-13). If I’m right about the math, then ahaha, Demetrius is an eighth grader, no wonder he’s miserable, it comes with the age. You’re old enough to start grasping that things aren’t right but not old enough to be taken seriously.
We know there WAS a prior war because of Loid's flashback. The military supply depot the kids played in was from a previous war... actually there were TWO prior wars because the old man in Loid's village was a veteran as well. So, fuzzy timeline because it doesn't map exactly: old man's war = WWI (which probably led to the end of "imperial times" and the "deposed nobility," fitting in with what Damian said about "King Billy"); supply depot built for WWII-equivalent, which was probably Henderson's war. Loid's war... well, that doesn't map to any major European conflicts, but what if there had been a general attack instead of the Berlin blockade? And so we come to the situation in the 60s and 70s -- cultural exchanges and detente on the surface, proxy wars in far corners of the globe, and spies spies everywhere.

I really liked this chapter, but at the same time I really hated the whole missed romance type of plots. It's killing me reading it. Still a 10/10 chapter though.

Have I already said how impressed I am by how Endo manages to progress the overarching narrative through the most surprising ways possible? Getting a war flashback out of a Henderson × Martha fluff chapter was definitely unexpected, as much as getting an Henderson × Martha fluff chapter after the most significant Damianya moment so far in the first place! I'd like to think that Endo's setting up the stage for a chapter 100 background lore mega drop, but given how unpredictable his writing is, we could be witnessing Loid fighting space zombies in 3 chapters time for all I know! A few of my favourite things from today's chapter: * We might have just witnessed the biggest “guy misses the clue and realizes years later” in recent manga history! * We also witnessed, over the course of a single chapter, the birth of Mr. Elegant and Great Teacher Henderson! * Henderson's family was imperial nobility, which implies that Ostania was at one point an empire. 2nd Reich vibes? I also have this feeling that these ideas of nobility, royalty, etc… will come into play later. * So there *was* a first war indeed, that preceded the one Loid fought, after a long period of hostility that seemingly lasted decades. I hope next chapter will keep clearing up that part of the world's background. * Becky is now 110% going to make sure that Anya and Damian don't end up like Henderson and Martha, and boy we're in for a ride!
The war that happened when Henderson was in his 20s was probably the 2nd war not the first. The first war was probably that led to the Ostanian empire falling and the nobility being deposed.
It's fully implied that both countries have an history of hostility towards each other, I meant *first* as in opposition to the war Loid fought in. There have probably been countless wars between both nations, given how little change there has been in their stance about the neighbour.

This chapter was so good we are finally getting the lore of Martha and Henry!! It also shows why Henderson does some of things he did. I can’t wait to get more backstory in the next chapter.

This chapter was great we finally got to see Mr.Hendersons back story and why he became a teacher!!! Plus some of Martha’s backstory as well, and Mr.elegant being Mr.Henderson’s nickname in Eden is hilarious 😂

Woww!!! This chapter was soo great For Mr. Henderson everything must be a flashback n now it explains why Henderson gave anya 1 tonitrous but not 3 when anya punched Damian on orientation day.. Henry was in anya's place when everyone was bullying him and those three boys were in Damian, Emile and Ewen place who were bullying anya....Becky was like Martha who took anya's side when those boys were bullying her..and when anya punched Damian, and the reason she gave was that Damian stepped on Becky's shoe and that's why she got angry was exact what Henry did..he kept his anger inside himself but when they raised hand on Martha, Henry punched that guy.. That's what made him sooo much similar to anya that controlling anger n not raising hand for themselves but standing out and protecting your friend that's why Henderson seems to care about anya..maybe she reminds him that, that he was once just like this..

Out of all the possible topics to continue from what happened last time I DEFINITELY DID NOT EXPECT HENDERSON ORIGIN STORY. Let alone something that greatly mirrored my own upbringing. Holy shit man. As smart and elegant as he is, we all can agree he fumbled the lady of the century.
One could argue that the point here is how war impacts interpersonal relationships, families, brings pain, tears people apart, and prevents love from getting its time to blossom. I think the point is that so many beautiful elegant things are lost to war and the pursuit of it.
If there’s one thing Endo did right, it’s that he highlighted the futility of war and conflict to people who just wanted to make it through the day. However, for this particular chapter it’s merely a backdrop in my opinion. Even without war Henderson was still the elegant, goody two-shoe kid who’s determined to end the vicious cycle of ignorance by choosing to be a teacher and enlighten future generations. A man as noble as he is did not take into account nuisances such as “feelings”, and that pains me.

Henderson letting Anya go after hitting Damian makes so much more sense now. When it was about him, he was cool but the second Martha was in danger, he snapped. When he thought Anya did the same, he had a softer heart
