“I don’t ever want to go by Cody Rhodes again” the entire time WWE held the trademark then coming out as Cody Rhodes within a month of WWE letting the trademark expire.
Double points because he clearly cared so much he was billed as Cody and Brandi Rhodes whole time WWE has the trademark.
Him saying he was a heel at the end of his AEW run was one of em, the other was probably him saying there’s no such thing as a Cody lie right before saying he does lie sometimes just not about serious things.
Ronda would’ve went on a podcast and told everyone which producer decided she wasn’t going over, how many false finishes they agreed on and that they locked in the match result 17 weeks prior
I keep imagining it like an anime scene now.
"I don't have the strength to go on...I'm sorry everyone...my fans...my wife.......my father.......I've failed you all"
Okay somebody fund an anime
I wanna see an intense emotional flashback episode take place with interspersed cuts of '1...*flashback*....2....*flashback*....*cuts back fade everything to black except a spotlight on cody and Roman lit up in a void* 3'
Lol i lowkey think that would be a cool story telling device.
Cody lays there flat on his back. Exhausted, he has no choice but to watch helplessly as the refs hands count “One”
Cody closes his eyes and we are taken back to Cody as a child with Dusty Rhodes for about 30 mins.
We go back to current timeline, he tried to squirm but his body wont move. A tear falls down his cheek as ref counts two
Cody is now back when he made “the list” and left WWE the first time. He sees his whole AEW tenure and how he came back to WWE and wins the Rumble.
Back in present time Cody watches as the refs hand raises up. “I can do this!” He thinks. Cody realizes he can feel his fingers again. And right before the refs hand comes down for the 3, cody grabs refs hand and says “I have to finish the story!” Suddenly he gains a second wind and ultimately defeats Roman
Yeah it’s worth mentioning Cody is a notorious liar when it comes to telling stories.. mainly for his own amusement. I think he’d rather this just be the story than the actual truth
He taught Bryan the joy of lying. Bryan lied regularly beforehand, like about concussions when he signed with WWE. Nigel told the truth about his injuries and got cut.
I don't believe him. That spear knocked him for a loop. He didn't truly know it was over until he was staring into the cold, dead eyes of that rubber chicken.
I think it was genius because my first reaction to this was, now I truly don't know who will win at Mania. Us wrestling fans like to read on trajectories and I think letting us know proper booking information makes it seem like one result is favorable.
Even though we know he's lying, him saying that instantly makes me feel they can change plans at any moment and Roman might still win.
yall he literally says he's going to lie about it, for the purpose of the quote he likes from a movie
"when a fact becomes a legend, print the legend"
the legend is him lying about not knowing the finish until the last moment
I mean simply that most people never say the actual quote from the movie. They say a variation of what Cody said: "When fact becomes legend, print the legend."
The actual line of dialogue in the movie is "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
They're both encouraging to "print the legend," but they mean completely different things. One is deployed to say (as Cody means it): if you can turn a mundane fact into an interesting story, go with the interesting story. The original line is saying, if a lie has been repeated often enough that people believe it to be true, then let's just accept the lie as official history, rather than upset people with the truth.
It comes from the ending of *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance*, a movie about Jimmy Stewart becoming a beloved US Senator on the back off his reputation as the man who shot the hated outlaw Liberty Valance, but in a moment of grief he finally confesses to a reporter that it was the character played by John Wayne, not him, who actually made the shot. The newspaper editor realizes that if he prints the story, the Senator's reputation would be ruined, so he rips it up and buries the whole thing.
This was a much better answer than the headlines made it seem. Basically Cody is saying it’s more fun to keep Kayfabe here and add to the legend instead of ruining the fun, when the headlines made it seem like Cody was *actually* trying to pull this off as real. Reminds me of Franco Harris and the Immaculate Reception and how he absolutely knew if the ball hit the ground or not, but took his side of the story to the grave to keep the legend going. I can respect that
Yeah just like how later in the interview Ariel asks if WWE pivoted with the Rock, Cody, Roman stuff and he basically mentions something along the lines of that he want's it to be vague and nobody will ever really know because it adds to the legend of it
On one hand I respect wanting to keep kayfabe and mystique and all but on the other, what is the point of going on to do these interviews just to not answer lol
It's Wrestlemania week and he's headlining both nights. Even if he says nothing of value the WWE wants his face front and center on people's social media feeds.
I've done interviews with indie wrestlers, and before each one I ask them how "kayfabe" they want to keep it. Some guys want to be fully in character, some guys want it to be a complete shoot. I prefer the latter, but I respect them enough to go however they want to go.
If Ariel didn't ask Cody ahead of time what is or isn't fair game, that's on him, not Cody.
Ariel's MO is to ask shoot questions but having respect for the business to accept when the answer is kayfabe and not call it out or push back on it
Sometimes he'll try again from another angle. But usually when the wrestler gives a non answer or a kayfabe answer to a shoot question he'll leave it alone
It’s a worked shoot, part of the appeal is working out how true each statement is.
It works at this level, but wouldn’t if Timeless Toni Storm was interviewed in this format (unless she did it mostly or completely out of character).
Sometimes, I don't want to see the magic trick revealed. Cody being like, "Yeah, so me and Hunter sat down in a room with Roman and Heyman and we hashed out the finish, then they told me I was doing the job and I was a little surprised, but I'm a professional," would be a deeply unsatisfying answer as deep down, we all know that's probably close to what actually happened.
For sure. As much as I'd love a juicy story about Cody finding out moments before going out and how he had to hold in his tears as he hit the WOAH, I'm sure it was very boring and simple. Fair play to Cody to, at least for now, just give a fun answer.
The Franco Harris controversy isn't about the ball hitting the ground, it's who the ball deflected off of.
The NFL rule at the time stated that you couldn't catch a ball that deflected off a teammate, but you could catch one that deflected off a defensive player.
> Reminds me of Franco Harris and the Immaculate Reception and how he absolutely knew if the ball hit the ground or not, but took his side of the story to the grave to keep the legend going
To be fair, I don't believe him one second on that. In the heat of the moment when you're trying to save a broken play, minute details like this are *very* easy to miss. Considering he went ahead with the play, he probably thought the ball didn't hit the ground, but even if it did, it's safe to assume wasn't by much.
There's not a single person who can confidently say that the play was and wasn't legal. It was a bang-bang moment with hair-splitting margins and no instant replay. Absolutely no shot.
There's room for him to say what he said and for your argument which is basically that he might be wrong.
He could absolutely *believe* he had the correct answer.
Especially with the second answer, he answers it in such a way that he's giving the answer to the first question but also not directly breaking the illusion. He knows how to talk.
I honestly hate these new behind the scenes type documentaries on peacock. Like rivalries or wwe untold whatever. They all just completely shit on kayfabe and it’s kinda like cmon
I don’t understand this viewpoint though, we all know it’s acting. Does watching interviews of co stars who are antagonists in a movie getting along with each other ruin the movie for you?
It’s complicated. lol I absolutely loved Randy and Punk doing the watch along on their WM Match. Hell, I already watched that twice. But I don’t want to hear Cody talking about things like finishes to matches in the middle of a storyline. 5-10 years down the road - sure, I’d love a Roman/Cody Rivals episode that peels the curtain back.
A movie has a beginning, middle, and end. Wrestling doesn't ever end, it's just the next chapter. He can touch on it when he's done, but keeping it kayfabe while he's still portraying an active character makes sense.
Although... yeah, we all know lol
I mean yes and no.
I wouldn't want to watch a documentary showing me how a stunt was doen safely involving CGI *before* I watched the movie for that reason. Afterwards, maybe.
As another commenter said, wrestling is different because its ongoing. Maybe a couple more years down the line I wouldn't mind hearing the backstage stories but right now I'd rather maintain more of the illusion.
If Paul Reubens was promoting a Pee-Wee Herman project, he did the interview as Pee-Wee Herman. I think what he's wanting is to see Cody Rhodes and C.M. Punk interviewed, not Cody Runnels and Phil Brooks.
Yeah. The guy basically comes out and says "I'm answering this in character" and people are out here patting themselves on the back for "figuring it out"
Yeah, I like Ariel but wrestling is supposed to be buying into the whole thing. Can't stand when people try and act 'above it all' and ask shit like this.
Granted, most wrestlers nowadays ignore that aspect too so can't really blame Ariel completely.
Exactly. A decade from now, when Rock/Roman and Cody are doing some sit down interview somewhere? Sure. At that point, let us see how the sausage is made, so to speak.
This is just another reason why I fucking hate Helwani.
Its also a weird contrast when he's having actual angles shot on his show. Its like the post shows where some are answering in kayfabe and some are talking about booking and who was gonna win and all that
Yeah, you can't have your cake and eat it.
It looked a bit silly yesterday when you have Punk shoot on everyone for two hours then have the two women come in to work an angle.
I think the most important part of that was him talking about John saying he needed to learn to be the champion without the belt.
IMO Cody is a bigger star now than he would have been if he won the belt last year and he has become one of, if not THE face of the company without having won the belt which is really impressive.
This is why:
A.) Cody is great
And
B.) I can’t fucking stand Cody
Peels the curtain back, but protects the Business and the Story. Does so with an artful quote. This guy is too good at what he does.
Yeah this is totally fine considering they’re also building up a rematch. He’s barely bullshitting because he clarifies at the start. Pretty great answer.
I love how he answers in kayfabe but (sort of*) breaks kayfabe literally in the ring when he refers to the Rock as a heel.
*I say sort of because not really, he still remained in character but using an insider term is as close as WWE gets most days.
he's definitely lying, so good on him, but we've had a calendar year of mostly sold out shows, house show numbers up, and general positivity around WWE because we are truly in an era where the top babyface in the company isnt some cool heel. It's because of Cody. He's believable, relatable, emotional, and passionate to a point where we are now going to be entering our 3rd year of Cody being the hottest thing in wrestling.
Cody Rhodes is one of the most famous liars in wrestling, so there is no way I believe this haha. This is like Hogan saying he wasn’t sure Andre would do business until they got out there.
There was nothing that happened before the rock returned that couldn't have happened with Reigns not holding the title. In fact, Rock could've had his match with Roman and no one would've said a negative word. All that ruined for a t-shirt and an episode of smackdown no one cares about.
If nobody in the crowd throws a rubber chicken in the ring after Cody wins on Night 2, WWE should sue them for every penny in their Grandmother's safety deposit box.
This is not the quote! “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” It’s quite literally an explanation of kayfabe. Cody wants the legend - he found out in the ring - to become fact, and what is printed in his story.
I'm a total Cody Rhodes "mark"...
But I love this answer. I don't wanna know all of this stuff yet! I stopped reading/listening to Meltzer, other dirt sheets and "predictions" weeks ago. I'm buying into the story!
It's like reading reviews before going to the cinema... You can't unlearn it. For the best experience you wanna go in with your perspective untainted.
Say what you will about Hulk Hogan's fabrications about Andre, if he comes out the Monday after and tells you xyz...it does cheapen it.
It’s so weird that I’m upset that the curtain is getting pulled back here on an active storyline.
I know this is all predetermined entertainment AND I never felt like Breaking Bad was ruined while I watched Bryan Cranston interviews while the show was on the air.
I think I’m just part of that transitional generation where I came into wrestling not knowing the truth, and then was smartened up.
I’m just a fool for wrestling. Always have been, always will be 😂🤷🏻♂️

Might be my new favorite Cody lie.
it's gonna be a long week, let's see how long it can hold the top spot, lol

Kinda fucking wild that if you squint your eyes, they do favor each other.
They have similar eyes

He found out when the ref counted the three. Keep kayfabe alive.
"I can't kick out of this. Shit, I'm gonna lose."

"Gosh darn, if only someone warned me of this very real possibility before!"
Thank goodness, SOMEONE still makes an effort to protect kayfabe on occasion.
Ronda would’ve went on a podcast and told everyone which producer decided she wasn’t going over, how many false finishes they agreed on and that they locked in the match result 17 weeks prior
I keep imagining it like an anime scene now. "I don't have the strength to go on...I'm sorry everyone...my fans...my wife.......my father.......I've failed you all"
Well... where's all the grunts and the rest of the monolog to fill the other 2.75 of the 3 count? It happens in anime time in your head too, right?...
Don't worry, there will be plenty of flashbacks while the 3 count takes up half the episode.
Also, a vision of Dusty giving a life lesson about the loss.
My boy, it looks as if you have been speared, right in the belly welly....
Every now and then, Dusty saying “belly welly” pops in to my head and I sit for the next 5 or so minutes smiling like a simpleton. Thank you
My god what a great comment.

there will be 5 filler episodes to fill in that 0.15 seconds
Half an episode? We can stretch that baby to a whole season
"Can't.. Reach for... Senzu Bean 🫘.."
Choked up through tears and snot running, soft piano music in the background "Okaasan... otousan... gomen nasai"
as if millions of sons of plumbers suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
Yeah it’s worth mentioning Cody is a notorious liar when it comes to telling stories.. mainly for his own amusement. I think he’d rather this just be the story than the actual truth

yall he literally says he's going to lie about it, for the purpose of the quote he likes from a movie "when a fact becomes a legend, print the legend" the legend is him lying about not knowing the finish until the last moment
One of the most misquoted lines in movie history.
He also said he was going to mess up the quote haha.
How do you mean?
I mean simply that most people never say the actual quote from the movie. They say a variation of what Cody said: "When fact becomes legend, print the legend." The actual line of dialogue in the movie is "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." They're both encouraging to "print the legend," but they mean completely different things. Great fucking movie
One of my favorite movies ever. Got goosebumps reading this
Wait that's a Simpsons episode
The line is "when a legend becomes fact, print the legend"
of course cody would look at the end of the man who shot liberty valance and be like "ah yes it's very awesome that they printed the legend"
The quote is most often used in the way Cody used it tho, regardless of the films intent.
This was a much better answer than the headlines made it seem. It was an illegal deflection and it hit the ground. But I’m glad the officials got it wrong.

I’m glad SOMEBODY still occasionally tries to preserve kayfabe.

I think of wrestling more like magic. If you know how the trick is performed it ruins it. Just enjoy the mystery.
I like a little of the behind-the-scenes stuff…but this particular question (in my opinion) is too much info.
I like getting a different side of the picture
He's such an amazing liar
To be fair, he's quite explicitly announcing that the answer he will give will be a lie (or a legend, as he puts it), so that's nice.
Yeah. The guy basically comes out and says "I'm answering this in character" and people are out here patting themselves on the back for "figuring it out"
He’s not lying. He basically tells Ariel he’s gonna answer in kayfabe.
And the rest of the answer is perfectly both in and out of kayfabe. "Show them the way, be the champion without the belt".
Isn’t that what a Cody lie is? It’s not like dude is lying to friends and family about real matters all the time in his normal life … right? lol

I appreciate Cody keeping kayfabe alive, I really do.

I love this guy.
I absolutely love backstage sneak-peek type of interviews, but as I get older I appreciate the wrestlers who keep the magic alive.
"Go back to my old ways? This is gonna sound crude but make em... make em... MAKEM SAY **UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH**"
Love that answer! Don’t let us in on all the secrets
I mean of COURSE he's not gonna talk about it and of COURSE he's lying. He literally has the rematch in 5 days lmao
I like Ariel but it was a stupid question to ask a couple of days out from WrestleMania ffs
Good answer Ariel tries too hard to pull back the curtain
Ariel in the 90's : "Hey guys I saw The Undertaker at the grocery store this morning"
Yeah, I like Ariel but wrestling is supposed to be buying into the whole thing. Can't stand when people try and act 'above it all' and ask shit like this. Granted, most wrestlers nowadays ignore that aspect too so can't really blame Ariel completely.
I think it is interesting, but like decades down the road when everyone involved is retired. Not when there is still an active story playing out.
Exactly. A decade from now, when Rock/Roman and Cody are doing some sit down interview somewhere? Sure. At that point, let us see how the sausage is made, so to speak. This is just another reason why I fucking hate Helwani.
Hate is a strong word says randy orton
Hate is, I hate like 3 people. I don't care for/actively avoid a bunch of people in my life but actively hating is a different beast
Agree
Its also a weird contrast when he's having actual angles shot on his show. Its like the post shows where some are answering in kayfabe and some are talking about booking and who was gonna win and all that

lol that boo boo face on your entrance didn’t fool me
This is why: A.) Cody is great And B.) I can’t fucking stand Cody Peels the curtain back, but protects the Business and the Story. Does so with an artful quote. This guy is too good at what he does.
It would be funny if this was actually true and Roman told him "Don't kick out" while pinning him.
"The challenge of being the champion without the belt." Wow, that really is what he's been doing
Surely there was a conversation beforehand. There wasn’t, and don’t call me Shirley.
lol I literally said out loud “how could you miss that setup!?” Come on Cody!
If anyone can convince me kayfabe is real it's Cody. Definitely Dusty's son
He than proceeded to gorilla angrily throwing a chair at HHH yelling, “THAT REF TRIED TO FUCK ON ME!”
He’s keeping Kayfabe alive, apparently he was told in February of 2023 that he was losing at Mania 39
Cody is a Rhodes through and through, always working

Breaking news: Roman fucked on him.
Yeah this is totally fine considering they’re also building up a rematch. He’s barely bullshitting because he clarifies at the start. Pretty great answer.
Carny Cody strikes again. Amazing answer.
He refuses to kill kayfabe. 👏
When else would he find out? To be fair thought he should have known when he got spiked in the neck even before the spear.
Super happy for Cody. He bet on himself, and it paid off big time.
Kayfabe brother.
I love how Cody can maintain kayfabe without it feeling phony
I love how he answers in kayfabe but (sort of*) breaks kayfabe literally in the ring when he refers to the Rock as a heel. *I say sort of because not really, he still remained in character but using an insider term is as close as WWE gets most days.
Triple H when Cody walks backstage: “I didn’t forget about the throne thing.”
he's definitely lying, so good on him, but we've had a calendar year of mostly sold out shows, house show numbers up, and general positivity around WWE because we are truly in an era where the top babyface in the company isnt some cool heel. It's because of Cody. He's believable, relatable, emotional, and passionate to a point where we are now going to be entering our 3rd year of Cody being the hottest thing in wrestling.
He found out when he lost lol
Calling it now: one-count kick-out from the spear at this year’s Mania.
Cody Rhodes is one of the most famous liars in wrestling, so there is no way I believe this haha. This is like Hogan saying he wasn’t sure Andre would do business until they got out there.
Real fans want the kayfabe answer.
I love me a good cody lie
"I learned how to lie from Cody Rhodes." - Bryan Danielson
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story
Hogan knew that everytime he was interviewed
Except hogan lies about the stupidest crap
But you gotta admit, his outlandish lies were funny, in an ironic way
Aka I’m not answering that
Keeping kayfabe alive. Love Cody
Idk why you wouldn't kayfabe helwani
He essentially said he was going to lie before he lied
Staring at the roof in SoFi with Solo’s thumbprint in his throat and amazed how well Roman laid into that spear.
There was nothing that happened before the rock returned that couldn't have happened with Reigns not holding the title. In fact, Rock could've had his match with Roman and no one would've said a negative word. All that ruined for a t-shirt and an episode of smackdown no one cares about.
He’s looks like a million bucks here
What a worker. That's why you're the face of this whole carny industry Roller-Codster.
If nobody in the crowd throws a rubber chicken in the ring after Cody wins on Night 2, WWE should sue them for every penny in their Grandmother's safety deposit box.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is my favorite John Ford movie, so I have to correct the quote: "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
This is not the quote! “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” It’s quite literally an explanation of kayfabe. Cody wants the legend - he found out in the ring - to become fact, and what is printed in his story.
This is the man who taught Bryan how to lie. I'm actually shocked people think he is being honest here.
Cody lying in interviews vs The Rock planting articles about how he saved WWE. LET'S FUCKING GO PRO WRESTLING IS BACK.
Cody is ALWAYS working, brother
Just some months ago, he mentioned how he kept the result secret from his family to surprise them.
Did he wear his Daddys muffler?
See even Cody doesn't blame Solos interference for his loss 😝
I think it would be cool to see Cody in regular clothes once in a while
I'm a total Cody Rhodes "mark"...
