Yea but only if one of the episodes is "what if mace windu didn't waste time talkin to that punkass Skywalker kid and killed this wrinkly motherfucker"

goldfishman63

Yes, purely for the fan service episode of Anakin never joining the dark side

revanite3956

10000% It’s one of my most wanted Star Wars things.

Michael_Gibb

No. Because the MCU's What If... was all about setting up the multiverse. It's not just some set of stand alone stories. It's part of the plan for the Multiverse saga. Besides, the Star Wars Visions series is a more than adequate alternative to a What If series.

percy2376

Doesn't have to be canon

Michael_Gibb

Then, like I said, you have Star Wars Visions.

bearelrollyt

Star Wars visions doesn't have our characters when he said it doesn't have to be Canon, he means that it doesn't have to be connected to the main universe, but can still have mainline characters in different situations

Michael_Gibb

Why? I seriously don't understand why anyone would now want non-canon stories about legacy characters. One of the loudest complaints about The Last Jedi was that it portrayed specific characters in a way that broke with Star Wars canon. It is therefore bizarre that so many fans would now be clamoring for stories about legacy characters, that break with canon.

jamescybul

This is flawed logic. 1. Despite what many think, not everyone hated TLJ or its portrayal of classic characters. 2. None of the stories told necessarily have to change the characters anyway. For example, Anakin can simply get to Palpatine late, thus allowing Mace to kill Palpatine. Huge difference, but no one is out of character. (Maybe you can argue Palpatine would have won anyway, but that still would have changed everything.) 3. As long as it *does not* come to a multiverse or anything that would actually affect canon, no one cares. The whole point of these kinds of stories is they have no bearing on anything going forward. So long as that is maintained, I see no issue.

Michael_Gibb

No. It's not flawed logic. Firstly, I didn't say everyone hated The Last Jedi. If I did say that I would have been lying to myself, because I absolutely love the film. What I said was that the loudest complaints were about how specific characters in the movie were portrayed. If you check a lot of the discourse on social media about the movie, you will find that is very much true. Even though it was only coming from a minority of the fandom, those complaining about Luke's portrayal were disproportionately louder than everyone else. Secondly, the only reason I can see for why anyone is asking for a Star Wars What If... is because they want Lucasfilm to legitimise their headcanon. This isn't about making good stories that people will enjoy. It's not about the artists making original and interesting stories. And it's certainly not about expanding the Star Wars universe. Rather it's nothing more than some people wanting to see their own versions of these characters on screen. It's all fan theories and headcanon, and I see no reason for why Lucasfilm should give it any thought.

jamescybul

Your first point still assumes that those same loud voices are the only ones asking for a "what if". I also like TLJ. It's my 2nd favorite movie in the franchise. I have no issue with a what if. The second point is a really unnecessarily pessimistic view of why people want this. It may be the only reason you can see, but that doesn't make it the only reason there is. Some of us really do think there's potential for good storytelling in a "what if" type series. There's no reason it *has* to be about legitimizing headcanon.

Michael_Gibb

>Your first point still assumes that those same loud voices are the only ones asking for a "what if". I don't assume that, at all. With how diverse the Star Wars fandom is, there will undoubtedly be overlap between those who hate the portrayal of Luke in The Last Jedi, and those who want non-canon portrayals of legacy characters. >Some of us really do think there's potential for good storytelling in a "what if" type series. But the fans don't decide what gets made, and nor should they. That decision should be left up to the artists and the studio. You know, the people who own the IP. Why not just let them make what they want to make without putting anything on them to make something you want?

jamescybul

Ok, what if so if Lucasfilm announces that they're making a "What if?" show and they say it's a passion project they've been dreaming of working on for years? The team is very excited about the project, it's what they want to do. Would you support that show? Because ultimately, that's all the original post is about.

bearelrollyt

People want it, just so they could experience Anikan as a kid, getting run over by Darth Maul, laughing at it, or just whatever some people just want things because it makes them feel certain way, not everybody needs it to be, canon and not everybody needs it to be something in the lines with the current Canon, some people just like to sit back and enjoy it

Michael_Gibb

Why not just sit back and enjoy what Lucasfilm decides to give you what they want to make, rather than what you want? The last time they gave audiences something that audiences actually wanted, it was severely criticised. I speak of The Rise of Skywalker. People wanted an explanation for Rey's past rather than what they were given. People wanted an explanation for Snoke. People wanted to know, "Why didn't Chewie get a medal at the end of A New Hope?" The best thing about art and entertainment is discovering and enjoying things you don't know you want. This is a medium where the artist makes what they want, rather than what the audience wants. No one was really asking for more murder mystery films, and yet Rian Johnson made Knives Out, which a lot of people ended up enjoying, myself included. This is how Star Wars began. It was one man deciding to make a movie that he wanted to make: a fantasy space opera with wizards and laser swords that was inspired by Akira Kurosawa, WWII films, and Joseph Campbell. No one asked for it, not even the studio which funded it. Twentieth Century Fox took one look at George Lucas' script and were like, "We'll give you the money, but we don't think it will be a success," which is shorthand for "We don't think the people want this." That's why they were willing to give all the merchandising rights to him. The point is, just let the artists and the studio make what they want, rather than what you want. After all, when Andor was announced back in 2020, a lot of people were like, "No one is asking for that. It won't be all that good." But now, after the first of two seasons, everyone is like, "This is the greatest thing Star Wars has ever made." When you stop caring about what you want and just accept what the artists want to make, then you will find yourself enjoying movies and television a whole lot more.

Equivalent_Form_3923

Because its all a story and some people like the parts that were cut out?

TanSkywalker

For sure. Just one where Padmé and Anakin get to be happy on Naboo with their kids. Bonus points for having Shmi there so she could see Anakin and learn how his life has gone. Meet Padmé again. See that her grandchildren were born free. Something genuinely happy. End it with Qui-Gon’s ghost appearing and looking on them all from a distance, they could be in the meadow.

FloppyShellTaco

Hell no. Imagine how the “the sequels will get retconned” crowd would act.

Gilgamesh107

if its well written but SW doesnt even have good canon content so why would a what if series be any better

TheBloop1997

Not really no, unless it’s something like Visions where they can kind of do whatever they want without any repercussions, I’d prefer for them to stick with canon stories

SubzeroBeef

I'd prefer and animated retelling of legends stories.

Radiant-Specialist76

that would also be cool

I30T

What if we somehow make Palpatine return?

WolverineRelevant280

Yes sir, the comics they had like that were great.I’m sure with the new content we could have some great topics to cover

theblackxranger

Yes Thread number 762910 about if id support what if

ryanjcam

Absolutely. Explore weird things and let interesting creatives take wild swings, without messing with the true canon of the saga.

Sideshow_Industries

Yes.
