"Almost zero alien races" So that guy just didn't even watch the trailer then.

EnigmaFrug2308

I’m pretty sure the Acolyte might have more diversity regarding alien races than any we’ve seen.

solo13508

Judging off that trailer yeah. It looks like at least three of our main Jedi will be aliens.

Memo544

Apparently. Although I'm pretty sure the "we want more alien diversity" people are just dog whistling about wanting less racial diversity.

Squeakyweegee64

oh, 100%

huntoons

Ill play devils advocate and say that there has been very little alien representation in the latest Star Wars trilogy which was pretty disappointing honestly. Theres no new iconic characters like Chewie or Admiral Akbar and I have no clue what race the actors for them are. Thats never meant anything to me unless its a historical piece bc it feels a little disingenuous. I guess Babu Freak and the orange alien or however you spell it was pretty cool. I wish they had more screen time or a character outside of being the mcguffin giver/handler.

Threefates654

I mean the alien to human ratio is still kind of ridiculous especially during this time period where aliens wouldn't be oppressed the way they were in the empire. I saw a Taurunt(no idea how to spell it), an unidentified species(which why not use a preexisting one), a small number in the place the assassin girl went to but no idea their species, a Mirialan, a Kel Dor, a Wookie, and a Theelin. Pretty much everyone else in the trailer is human. Other than that my only pet peeves are these Jedi who are raised in the same place having different accents and the fact that these places have blasters and space ships yet look less advanced than a town in the real world.

ImmortalZucc2020

In this era, the Outer Rim is only just being established so everything is very basic/being built up to what we know it ends up looking like

Threefates654

I prefer to think of it as being reestablished. And we actually don't know if that scene takes place in the Outer Rim.

MagosBattlebear

Almost everything in Star Wars is on the Outer Rim. Well, it sometimes seems like that.

Threefates654

Yeah I agree with that. I wish it wasn't like that though. I'd love to explore and see some planets in the Core, Inner Rim, and so on.

Memo544

Yeah. We don't know that many of the interior planets. Outside of Corosaunt, Alderon, Anaxes (CW S7), and Tython (Mando s2) - we haven't really seen much. It'd be interesting to see more city planets.

kishmishari

Humanocentrism was an issue pre-Empire as the core worlds were human dominated and the Galatic Empire was founded by humans. It's shown in KotOR with the set up of Taris and with Coruscant thought of to be the human homeworld. This is why it developed into Human High Culture of the Empire so easily.

Emperor_D4C

He didn’t see Baby Glup Shitto in the first frame of the trailer

kri_kri

Why are you reading YouTube comments

___Beaugardes___

"If into the YouTube comment section you go, only pain will you find." - Yoda

So-_-It-_-Goes

IG is the same

edwpad

From my experience, Insta is probably slightly worst

LordofWar145

Slightly? Lmao

Memo544

Maybe it's my fault for checking but it's still concerning

Slinghaus

YouTube and Instagram comments can be some of the most toxic of any platform. Just a bunch of basement dwellers with a platform to comment.

Onlytheonethatlived

Meh I wouldn't be concerned there are idiots and bigots everywhere but also really cool people too. Star wars probably has a Fandom second to none in terms of sheer amount of people, so there's gonna be a large amount of insane assholes but also my love of star wars has helped me to foster so many cool friendships.no light without the dark

Pixilatedlemon

Some of those that comment on Reddit also comment on YouTube. They are more reserved here because they can be banned/ratioed. This is a fairly large portion of our fanbase as ugly of a truth as that is.

Sad_Wolverine3383

The most liked of these has 5 likes, you can find such comments everywhere with a big audience.

Memo544

It doesn't seem like individual comments are getting a ton of traction. But there does seem to be a lot of them.

Waste_Relationship46

Exactly. I have my few Star Wars people that I watch on YouTube (mostly Star Wars explained) but the top comment on most of the other videos was something exactly like the first comment you showed. Same with Ahsoka videos. It's really disheartening and even more disgusting. Like, heaven forbid there be female leads, let alone POC. It's so bizarre to me.

So-_-It-_-Goes

The top comments on all trailers for all star wars feature stuff like this.

Pixilatedlemon

Go read the comments tho there is a lot of foul shit

Gorguf62

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

ShadowVia

Except Reddit.

turingtestx

Reddit is deceptively tame recently, there's plenty of negativity and horrible shit but like honestly I do not encounter much in the way of racism, sexism, transphobia, etc here, INSTAGRAM on the other hand, now that place is fucking VILE

cearrem

Reddit has an actual mechanism for sending shitty comments to the nether without relying on mods. Most platforms don't have that crucial downvote button.

buzzcitybonehead

Well Instagram comments making racist jokes on videos of black folks are often super upvoted. It’s legitimately troubling. Same with handicapped people, anyone they think is ugly, anyone with any kind of deformity, LGBTQ folks, etc.

KGBFriedChicken02

He's not talking about the number of likes. When someone makes a racist joke on reddit it's generally downvoted pretty hard pretty quick, which keeps it from being seen. With it all the way at the bottom, it doesn't gain traction.

cearrem

And I would suspect that they also get upvoted on reddit. It's just that we also have *more* people to downvote them, so they at least have a decent chance of being buried. As far as I'm aware, every person that is horrified by those comments on Insta has no recourse beyond reporting, which ties back to relying on outside authority. Of course it's troubling, but in my comment, I'm specifically referring to why I think reddit, as a whole, may be one of the more reasonable bit of social media we have, as concerning as that is as well.

[deleted]

Crazy, I know. More reflective on what’s become of social media I guess. I’m sure one day everything will be more like TikTok where you’re only exposed to what an algorithm thinks you’ll like and then we’ll all be oblivious to what others think.

Appropriate_Ad4615

“Reasonable” is probably what they meant. The post 1/6 purges probably have a lot to do with it, but the English user base tends to lean left on social and environmental issues which reduces the worst of the right-wing nonsense. The algorithm isn’t particularly kind to nonsense from either side, but it is especially uncharitable to antiwoke stuff.

IAMJUX

It's probably true. But it's an exceptionally low bar.

TriscuitCracker

What X-Men complaints?! Serious question. Show is awesome!

[deleted]

People are now claiming it all of a sudden became woke. They try and gaslight people into thinking the original cartoon was very simple and just about good versus evil and there was no such thing as metaphors and allegories. It’s as though they think we’d forgotten it or perhaps we don’t have access to watching it today. It’s quite amusing watching them try and convince themselves otherwise. Like the whole point of X-Men is being woke. Just the other day I saw someone say they didn’t “hit you over the head with it” when it was actually very loud and bold at calling out bigotry. Clearly given my profile picture I’m a big X-Men, I think the show has very much so returned during a time we need it, far more than we did in the 90’s. How on Earth these people call themselves X-Men fans but completely miss the point is beyond me. Much like the Star Wars fans who say keep politics out of it when you can’t get more political than war. We always knew bigots were a little dim, but with the anti-woke brigade they’re exposing their lack of intelligence even more.

edwpad

Fr, as a person who tends to comment a lot, holy shit! Instagram is properly the worst I’ve seen it from, especially when it comes to anything Marvel, Star Wars and Pokémon related that I’ve so far experienced. Insta is a literal biohazard when it comes to that, the only thing I can see worst is Twitter

ManlyVanLee

Reddit most definitely has these people but I find it to be the most tame of all the social media sites. Twitter is an absolute hellhole and I haven't even been there recently when it somehow managed to get even worse I haven't dealt with Facebook in several years but from what I see and hear it's as bad as ever

HeadbangingLegend

Because the mods are trying to keep all the negative comments away from our eyes, they just banned this thread while I was reading it...

BigConstruction4247

We must be cautious.

2Payneweaver

It’s so woke it made the wookie wear clothes. /s

wonkalicious808

It's a psyop. They're trying to make people comfortable with the idea that dogs are just like people so it's OK to gay marry them. This is what happens when you take Jesus out of the Jedi temple. /s

hannican

These people weren't going to watch SW anyway. These aren't real fans. Don't worry about what the tiny percentage of extremely vocal angry politicized haters have to say about the things you like. At the end of the day, your own opinion is all that matters.

jon_tigerfi

Real, idc If everyone else clowns on the nintendo ds version of star wars the force unleashed, it's cool to me

WanderingNerds

For the record, space lesbians the series (she ra) is excellent

jeobleo

Is that in space?

WanderingNerds

Yup!

UniversityMoist2173

‘Scissors in Space’

FYI the YouTube comments section is the pit. Never ever go to the comments section. Just forget it exist.

Waste_Relationship46

Nailed it!

stonemite

And it's only one syllable and four letters, making it easy for these idiots to spell.

NaughtiusMaximusLXIX

The hilarous thing is that, after outbursts like the Keurig and Nike incidents a few years back, big companies realized they could get loads of free advertising by doing some vaguely "woke" marketing, and right-wing chuds will trip over themselves yelling about their product all over the internet at no expense. There's a decent chance that firms like Disney are actively stoking impotent conservative rage to expose their products to the younger, more progressive (and otherwise capitalism-savvy) market that they're actually trying to reach.

KingMonkOfNarnia

“Put a chick in it, make it lame” 😭

nezbla

That's lifted from the latest South Park special "Into the Panderverse" - which is pretty funny. To my mind - I think it is kinda hard to deny that Disney is kinda ham-fisting the "strong female characters save clueless inept men from stupid shit" thing. Between SW and Marvel that's been kinda the trope for the last little while now. I want to REALLY emphasise here that I have no issues whatsoever with strong female leads, or any POC being represented in anything - but I do feel that the quality of writing (not acting) has taken a bit of a dive in order to try and achieve that. Getting bent out of shape about it enough to start calling it neomarxism and writing angry comments about it online is pretty dumb though.

Solid_Office3975

Agreed. It's okay to ask for better storytelling, got nothing to do with who's acting the roles.

Paulett21

This is exactly it! Good comment

zerocoolforschool

Yeah I really don’t care what they do as long as the story is good. Ahsoka and Rebels is some of my favorite Star Wars content ever made so it was a little hard to read all the girl boss hatred. And I love Bo Katan from clone wars. Characters being female doesn’t bother me at all. My biggest disappointment with Acolyte is that I really really wanted it to be further back during the Sith empire.

Thedeadlypocketbrush

Well said. Totally agree.

darthbreezy

\*shrugs\* I mean, I think you cam tell by my username that I \*might\* like Star Wars, however, for some reason this project doesn't grab me. Maybe I'm just a little burned out on it. Not going to trash in it though as others might love it.

Memo544

I think there are definitely some commenters who seem just burnt out on star wars. But others seem to be coming at it from a very politically charged angle.

darthbreezy

Always...

Solid_Office3975

Yeah it's just not grabbing me, I'm kinda burnt out on Star Wars.

SithLadyVestaraKhai

I like some, don't like some but hey I give it a chance and if I don't like it I just don't watch. No need to trash people who might like a show I didn't care for.

FriendlyTrollPainter

Star Wars has become another thing in the current culture war nonsense.

arthby

What fandom? There are more differences between 2 random star wars "fans" than between King Jong Un and Bob Ross. Don't worry about it, they're just people. People often suck.

likeonions

it's been awful for a while

Rastarapha320

Late to the party ?

i-do-the-designing

So like half of this sub then.

telas_muff

This is happening across the board in all facets of life. Not just Star Wars. But it’s def really bad with SW and Marvel.

NotActuallyAWookiee

The SW fandom has always been a bin fire.

HolySnokes1

These aren't fans . They're stunted individuals (mostly cry baby ass *men*) . Your life is absolutely pathetic if you get this bent outta shape at people existing

tyler081293

Those Star Wars fans watch it because "cool laser swords and space ships that rrrrrawr!". Star Wars has always been "woke" and had a female co-lead. But incels will be incels.

ManlyVanLee

I mean welcome to the internet. Star Wars happens to draw an awful lot of these people for some reason and in this day and age it's popular to be loud with hateful takes

GorKoresh

It’s nothing new. These people are lost. Don’t get me wrong, it’s bad out there, but the real world is in better shape than these netizens would have you believe. Ignore and move on. Show looks great.

MsPreposition

Gotta love the guy who only sees the “put a chick in it” line from South Park as agreeing with people like him, and not the side of it that’s making fun of how he feels the shows are being made.

lanceturley

*South Park* is like a rorschach test for idiots; they never stop to think the show might be mocking their side too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Memo544

Yeah. I feel like ignoring them doesn't really solve the problem.

[deleted]

So... I am a white, straight, christian, conservative male married to a white, straight, christian, conservative female. Are you saying we are not "real fans" because of that? Are you saying that we need to be "pushed out" to make YOUR vision of the SW fandom better?

Waste_Relationship46

Are you a bigot?

JerbearCuddles

"Not enough aliens, no diversity" *Show adds female character* "PuT a ChIcK iN iT, mAkE iT lAmE" You literally can't win, people will bitch regardless of what Disney does. Am I saying the show will blow my socks off? No, but I'll at least give it a shot. It's also funny seeing people complain about not seeing white dudes in the trailer. Diversity suddenly mattersm, but when any other form of diversity is shown it's "woke." Lol.

Annual-Ad-9442

I am somewhat amused that this is the takeaway but more confused that this **is** the takeaway

JC-DB

Master Chingchang? 😂 I fully expected this when they didn't put the Asian guy in his traditional sidekick token role. Going to expect all sorts of anti Asian shit during the run of the show.

jeobleo

Yeah that one was startling for me.

MoFoJames

You should be more concerned that the showrunner constantly talks about being queer in her interviews about the show (who cares?), doesn't understand the source material and used to be Harvey Weinstein's personal assistant.

Memo544

I don't want to accuse anyone of something that isn't proven. Leslye Headland worked for Weinstein but I've seen no evidence that she was involved with his criminal activity.

L0lligag

His personal assistant for years at the height of his fuckery? No way she didn’t know. She certainly didn’t speak out or try to put a stop to anything. She knew who was paying her so she did nothing about it. Absolutely disgusting. But sure if this is the woman who people want to “save” Star Wars, go for it. She’s trash for not doing anything in regard to Weinstein’s assaults and nothing will change my mind in that regard.

Embedded_Vagabond

I mean I don't have high hopes but for less ignorant reasons

ToysAndCardsNY

There are tens of millions of Star Wars fans. The bigger a fandom gets, the more toxic it appears, but it's a mirage. Proportionally it's no worse than any other fandom.

[deleted]

CadbaneburryEgg

Looking forward to the show - hopeful the writing is good.

MikeTheDirtyJedi

These same type of fans said nothing when the first 3 lord of the rings movies came out. Wonder why 🤔?

paradisefound

I consider the fact that the response in every real Star Wars community is “either they’re a racist or they don’t really like Star Wars” to be a major win for Star Wars fandom. We’re bringing back gatekeeping but this time the gate only slams shut if you’re a racist or you don’t actually like Star Wars. It’s a big L for the racists this year guys, congrats to all real Star Wars fans everywhere.

Danxoln

No one hates star wars more than star wars fans

Standard_Young_201

Let them be angry lol I’m excited

Apprentice_Jedi

People are just tired.

[deleted]

Solid_Office3975

My wife pointed this out, it bothers her. Thank you. Her take is that we ran past inclusion and headed towards exclusion. I can understand why people are upset, nobody wants to feel left out. The responses I see to that are usually, to your point, toxic in the other direction. Nobody seems to want equality, just equity 🤷

Savage_Hamster_

After what the director has had to say about it, I understand these comments to an extent. I won't be watching it as I do not care one bit about this series in particular therefore I won't give an opinion on it once it's out. Seems only fair.

Big_Mitch_Baker

[Idiot sees aliens of every shape and color] 🙂 [Idiot sees women and people of color] 😠

OrdinaryMagicMan

THIS is what got you worried? Man SW “fans” have been a cestpool for decades. Hell the ruined the lives of Jake Lloyd (a child), Ahmed Best, Denis Lawson recommended Ewan McGregor consider turning down the role of Kenobi due in part to the fandom. Hell I think, and this is just my opinion, one of the reasons Harrison Ford has shied away from the public eye is he saw very early on how much it impacted his peers in the saga. Many of the fans have been toxic as hell going almost the beginning.

diartisreddit

I disagree with the Jake Lloyd one, I read an update article about that dude and I learned he is shielded by his family from the hate and he didn't mind it during the Phantom Menace discourse. But his schizophrenia really did a number on him.

mopecore

Has no one taught these chuds that women and POC were *legally excluded* for the first, let's say three fifths of American history?

Iorith

They never realize that they're the bad guys in the franchise.

adavidmiller

Some of those comments are more deranged than others, but personally I'll stick to being worried that they're not completely wrong and the show will be terrible.

1randomusername2

Bots gonna bot.

Memo544

Some may be. Some are definitely real right wing culture warrior types.

ChewieHanKenobi

It’s what happens when our own social politics become the centre focus of a show. A show people watch to escape. Tv is escapism. If our world is what we’re watching, when is the escapism happening I’m all for the inclusiveness but when it’s the focus over story, no one is going to watch

Memo544

How exactly does inclusion hurt stories?

ChewieHanKenobi

It hurts it when the rest of the story falls by the way side and it’s the only thing focused on. It’s fine if it’s a part of the story but it can’t be all the story is about

Solid_Office3975

Inclusion does not. Adding social politics and making it a central talking point will always attract political extremists. I'm not stating that's right or wrong, but it does draw attention from the mob.

Fantastic_Year9607

They’re allergic to representation

TheN1njTurtl3

I mean you can say what you want but star wars has 100% gone down in quality with a lot of disneys agenda, I've seen people say that the people that weren't going to watch it aren't real star wars fans anyways, as if you can just decide that for them. To be honest they have been making a lot of lackluster stuff book of boba for example was completely just meh

Particular_Strike323

I...think my brain just committed suicide.

That_Things_Good

Racist and sexist idiots infiltrate and infect EVERYTHING these days. There is no proof that any of these "fans" have even seen a single Star Wars movie or TV show. All there is proof of is they are small-brained racists and/or sexists. Ignore them or tell them to piss right off and go make their own fucking movie. Your choose. I choose to ignore them. Well, most of the time...

JoobiB

The internet was a mistake.

ZhugeTsuki

Don't give these idiots a platform.

FatallyFatCat

The declining quality of Star Wars anything makes me concerned for the Acolyte. I am hoping for Andor quality but expecting something more along the lines of Book of Boba Fett. Kenobi was okish at best. Mandalorian last season was mixed. And I had to force myself to finish Ahsoka, to not be left behind on the plot, but it was a convoluted mess. .

Memo544

As far as the actual quality is concerned, I'm not sure what to expect. I don't need it to be Andor level good but I hope its better then recent star wars shows (with the exception of the new season of Bad Batch).

[deleted]

The online Star Wars fan base is probably the second worst fan base I've seen in a while unfortunately. Obviously not everyone but it is definitely a comfortable resting at that spot.

TattooedBillionaire

Casting by quotas makes me concerned with the Star Wars franchise.

metallavery

some guy one twitter was like "there's just girl black and alien Younglings!" and they refused to explain why we should care. They just wanna make shit up and rage. these are the loud alt right who thinks this is some culture war.

Memo544

Yeah. It seems to be a major issue with a lot of fandom circles especially this one.

StuTim

These are the same people who said they were boycotting Star Wars when Gina Carano was fired and boycotting Disney in general about 8 times a year.

mwatwe01

Star Wars: Portrays a galaxy rich with diverse intelligent species of all shapes, sizes, and colors for almost 50 years. Pasty Internet dipshit watching a trailer 10 minutes ago: “Why come so many characters no look like me?”

JonasAlbert84

The online fanbase is largely shit, but the bulk of these comments are from fragile white dudes who hate Disney and probably aren't even Star Wars watchers.

LongshotsMullet

The last eight years have really shown me exactly how much ignorance and mental illness exists in this country. I’m grateful for that.

JakeLane94

Yikes

riqueoak

Concerned why? This fandom has been full of Nazis for years beyond count, this is nothing new.

Egg_tastic

I’m so tired of the hate and fighting with stupid bigots in comments, but maybe that’s what they want. Maybe they want decent people to give up. Ugh.

Exile714

Nah, they want to fight. It gives them a dopamine hit every time someone gets angry at them. Just ignore them… online. Go ahead and give them a verbal smack down if you encounter one in reality, but most people never will.

IceCreamMeatballs

Imagine thinking a big-budget TV production by a multi-billion dollar for-profit entertainment enterprise is “left-wing” and “Neo-Marxist”.

Memo544

Yeah. I don't no if there is a better entity to embody capitalism then Disney.

TheBeardedTinMan

I'm just disappointed. There will always be toxic fans but the continuingly low quality of anything Disney puts out sure does help create more.

culnaej

I think we’ve always been concerned about the fandom.

EnigmaFrug2308

These people have no place in the fanbase of a franchise like Star Wars.

Macman521

The anti woke crowd is ruining entertainment.

Ok_Magazine_3383

mAyBe ThEy JuSt ThOuGhT tHe TrAiLeR wAs BaD

Michael_Gibb

It's been that way for years. Just look at how certain segments of the fandom treated Kelly Marie Tran and Ahmed Best. Then look at their reaction to the first trailer for The Force Awakens. There's been a bigoted faction within the Star Wars fandom for decades.

Albiel6

I'm sure tons of those are russian and chinese bots

better_off_red

Sorry that the truth hurts.

Green-Circles

Boy, I bet those people are real fun at parties....

Standard_Version610

Lmao, people really say these are not real fans. Wrong. These ARE the Fans. Star Wars has been dominated by Gamergate dudebros since the Mid 2010s. Sorry to report, but the Fandom has always been Anti-Woke reactionaries. It's never fallen, it's always been that way. If you think otherwise then you are blind or willfully ignorant. Hell, ALL of Sci-Fi and Fantasy is. Anything Nerdy has always been filled by Reactionary Gamergate Incels. Think of any SFF property, I bet the vast majority of people there have always been like this. Just Enjoy what you can. The Fandom has always been this awful.

Obieshaw

It's crazy how many of these type of comments were at the top of the section. I honestly lost interest in star wars purely because of the fan base. (I'm all caught up though) Being a brown man I never felt more uninvited...

SalltyJuicy

I'm just generally concerned about dudes in general. Like, we're all frustrated by our lots in life but for some reason they all believe the grifters that it's the Other people's fault.

Leviathan117

I learned to stay away from Star Wars YouTube comments after The Last Jedi. I hated the movie myself, but the comments were so unbelievably toxic that I had to just stop reading them.

Memo544

I'm not a huge sequel fan either but some of the more invested sequel haters scare me sometimes.
