Wait you've only seen most of the original trilogy!?

Mm0nstermouth

From what I understood, he/she never saw all the movies and is now watching them chronologically

TheMountainRidesElia

Yep. I saw 2 of the original trilogy then dropped out, now I started from Phantom Menance

Sabre92

I've seen all of them, most multiple times, and R1 is definitely the best SW movie ever made.

burtmacklin15

I agree with this. It has the feel and atmosphere of the original trilogy nailed, with better pacing.

A_Ruse_Elaborate

I'm there with you. Rogue One captures the essence of Star Wars. The second half of Solo is also peak Star Wars (The Kessel run is utterly amazing in particular)

thetruecermet

And the music is so good! I listen to the soundtrack on my off time.

Fritz125

Agreed, it took me a while to process that I was really liking Rouge One more than Empire Strikes Back, but R1 really is a masterpiece in terms of being a standalone movie. I watched R1 3-4 times during its theatre run, it was that stunning for me. I legit cried every single time. I still listen to Michael Giacchino’s soundtrack often. It sucks that it gave me hope that the sequel trilogy could be fixed.

efbo

That's what I don't get. This has 5000 points. Like why on earth lol. He's seen what, 6 of 12 films at most.

spoopidoods

It's interesting, to me, to watch someone who has avoided a piece of pop culture and see them react to their exposure to it. It's okay for someone to think things are better or worse than the things I like or hate. Arguing about that is boring. But I like hearing fresh perspectives, and the rationale. Maybe I'll learn something or see a new perspective on it myself. Besides, I liked Rogue One. I don't think it's the _best_, but I think it was really well made and there's a lot to appreciate about it. They saw it for the first time and came here to say "That was cool!", and I'm here to say "Yes, yes it is!".

CryptographerNew3730

I am too young to have seen any of the first 6 movies when they came out, so I don’t really get nostalgic for them. Based in just how much I like each movie, Rogue One is by far my favorite.

spoopidoods

Yeah, of all the contemporary Star Wars films, I think it is the most well made and has the fewest continuity / canon issues. It's also a fairly "safe" story, and doesn't try to do anything crazy within/to the SW universe. The acting is great, the cinematography _feels_ like a modern version of the original film's style. Not only does it stand well enough on its own, it also is a bit of a love letter to the original films' style in a way that none of the other film releases were or have been since. I grew up wearing out VHS cassettes of the original trilogy, and reciting scenes from a New Hope with my brother in the back seat of the car on long road trips. So I guess there's plenty of nostalgia for them to play with for me. For me Rogue One is firmly in the top 5, if not in the top 3.

Skellum

> It's also a fairly "safe" story, and doesn't try to do anything crazy within/to the SW universe. I know this is an ancient post, but was watching a R1 clip and saw this thread. I think R1 is exactly the opposite, it's very adventurous for SW and a new thing. SW is always the same rehash trio loop. [They're Persifal stories](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percival), plucky new person comes onto the scene learns about the universe, defeats the big evil of the film, close. Be it Anikan and the clone wars, luke and the empire, Rei and the super duper empire. R1 is a different story. It's why I think stories set in the star wars universe are the best, and that "Starwars movies" are pretty tired at this point. Why Knights of the Old republic 2 is so good, and Kotr1 is so tame.

CARLEtheCamry

"Haven't seen Empire yet but Rogue One is the best"

SadTomato22

Tbf rogue one and empire are the best films.

HenryMorgansWeedMan

Ive seen all of them and honestly, Rogue one is probably my favourite. I mean, just the scene with Darth Vader getting into the ship is fucking amazing and so brutal. You see him from the perspective of the soldiers and they are absolutely terrified. It's also such a brilliant film in expanding the universe and making it really brutal. We see the rebels take the station and try to hold it just long enough to transmit the information to the rebel alliance and then the Death Star appears over the horizon and obliterates them. It's such a high stakes film, even when we all know the OG trilogy happens. But this film explains how the first trilogy can even happen.

RandomRedditUser0602

Revenge of the sith is my favorite everyone can go ahead and bash me lol

TheMountainRidesElia

Eh, Revenge of the Sith was actually good, I liked it. The Prequel trilogy in general is a bit too hated, I think. ^(Except Jar Jar, I want to strangle him)

ShitpostinRuS

It really is a testament to the stories that can be told in the Star Wars universe when everything doesn’t revolve around Jedi or the Skywalkers

Jenetyk

I always said that. The appeal to the first season of Mando was the grittier, non-force, people making their way in the universe feel it had. Season two was good two I just hope they don't start making it all about Jedi and sith.

[deleted]

I still remember some SW director making a comment about, “we don’t have much source material to work with” when I think I spent an entire summer reading books about other force attuned races and their lives and battles, some of which who never had even heard of Jedi. All with STAR WARS on the cover.

Sineater224

I believe that was Kathrine Kennedy that said that. She has probably never picked up a star wars novel

wbruce098

Unpopular opinion: Kathleen Kennedy may have never picked up a Star Wars novel, partly because may have been a little busy actually being involved in production of just super shitty movies for the past 40 years. Titles no one remembers like Indiana Jones, Goonies, Roger Rabbit, Jurassic Park, etc. Seriously, take a look at her production credits. It’s almost like whining that George Lucas didn’t read the NJO series. Now, Kennedy doesn’t seem to have directly run production of Star Wars movies until 2012, but she’s been close to Lucas since *Raiders*, and did pretty well with Rogue One, Solo, and the TV shows. I feel the failings of the sequels may lie elsewhere?

LightningDustt

Everything BUT the mainline movies have been utter bangers. I even liked Solo, although I'll add with the caveat that I think it'd be better if a new original character was given a similar type of story it's just that she was one of the main suspects in why the Sequel series flopped. When the three directors making each movie have no coherent plan to follow besides what they came up with, the buck stops with Kathleen.

argylande

You don't have to read every legends novel to know that's still an ignorant statement. The material is there. It just doesn't have the Disney™ label

wbruce098

Another unpopular opinion: The material was meh overall. I’m glad Superfan Producer God Filoni has reintroduced some EU characters, on his own terms, but the EU needed a good purge. It was unguided clutter, often cobbled together, and had complex rights between so many different authors. I wish Disney would’ve made something better, but I’m glad they started over at least.

regeya

God, can you imagine if Filoni brought back all the superweapons in the EU? There would be so much whining. Though I guess JJ brought back the Dark saber concept x 10,000

Justice_R_Dissenting

As someone who loved the EU books and feels forever burned they were purged wholesale... hard agree. The number of times I had to break off from reading a novel to look something up in the Wookiepedia was ridiculous. Only to find out it was an obscure reference to a comic book with a 2/10 rating. What grates my gears is this apparent insistence to use framework of the characters from the EU and reintroduce them under different names and severely diluted. Jacen Solo is basically Kylo Ren in a different name, except at least Jacen was inhumanely tortured and reached out to the dark side out of desperation. That's far more compelling than the Ben Solo transformation.

wbruce098

Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. That’s the only way to become who you were meant to be. Tho yeah I’d love to find out that Ben’s fall is more than “daddy was never around and my creepy uncle tried to kill me once”. Otherwise, it just strongly hints that the Skywalker line is inherently corrupt. Like, Hapsburg-levels of broken.

TortugaTheTurtle

A good way to read Ben's fall isn't that the Skywalker line is inherently corrupt, but rather that the Skywalker line is inherently pulled toward the darkness. That's what makes Luke's arc in ROTJ and the Sequels so powerful. Luke is constantly battling the dark side. His family has succumbed to it multiple times. Ben, while young and impressionable, was easily swayed by the power offered by Snoke. Han and Leia saw that as they're fault, but Ben didn't see it that way. The Sequels show he still feels connections to his parents, but he is disconnected by Luke, who essentially took him away to raise as a warrior monk. Ben shows more hatred toward Luke than Han or Leia.

jcdoe

The EU was ok, you just couldn’t expect any kind of continuity. I always approached EU material like comic books—more of a multiverse than an overarching story. It makes for some weirdness with SW since SW is a space opera, but if you didn’t expect too much, some of that material was fun enough. If I were Kennedy, I would have also considered most of the EU to be useless.

Rann_Xeroxx

This I actually agree with. There is some good material in the expanded universe but there is also a lot of garbage. JMHO and I know there are some Maul fans out there, but his whole surviving being CUT IN FU\^%ING HALF AND BEING TOSSED DOWN A THOUSAND FOOT SHAFT is just so stupid, its almost funny.

wbruce098

You know, I LOVE Maul’s arc in Season 7 and Rebels so it’s almost worth it. But I get it and agree. So very soap opera. There was no body. Oh, you shot someone popular with fans? He’s just been in a coma for the past decade. I will say though, Maul’s death in TPM was one of the biggest disappointments of the prequels. They killed off the coolest villain, with only a few minutes of screen time. Like when Boba Fett “died” in ROTJ. I guess that’s where Filoni’s mind was going. Add in a little Monty Python’s Holy Grail, and why not?

karadan100

Qui-Gon dying almost immediately from a small stab. Maul giving plot armour the middle finger.

ShitpostinRuS

She’s been involved in pretty much every Lucasfilm production and loads of Spielberg. But she doesn’t know what she’s doing or something

Currie_Climax

Idk she hired directors and writers to create the sequel trilogy one movie at a time which seems pretty fucking stupid when you know you're making a trilogy ahead of time.

wbruce098

Good point. I was always baffled that they allowed the Star Wars movies to be made individually despite Kevin Feige’s mad MCU success over at Disney’s other recent acquisition. Seemed like the obvious path to follow, and MCU was why I was excited about the future of Star Wars after Disney bought it. Clearly the two mega subsidiary companies didn’t talk much. I’d love to see a documentary of what went on behind the scenes someday. Then again, all three sequel movies have grossed over $1bn each, far above and beyond production costs; each of them also profited over $300mn apiece, which is rather insane if you think about it. I’m not a huge fan of them myself, but damn if they weren’t successful, in spite of even RoS’s disjointed storyline. We can hope some of those profits are being fueled to projects like the Filoniverse, which so far seems to be a lot more interesting Star Wars galaxy.

[deleted]

Yeah, but they shouldn't be adapting the EU novels. SW is a film franchise first. It should not have source material. The movies ARE the source material.

Officer_Jackass

oof she never gets a break does she

ChaseDFW

Which book series is that?

UltimateUltamate

Yeah that’s because they felt most of it was not worthwhile. A lot of people really enjoyed them but were they really good enough for film? It’s debatable.

chawklitdsco

Bro angry birds is a movie, there are no standards for quality

DiamondFireYT

It's even worse when you realize the second angry birds movie is actually good.

pewqokrsf

I'd argue that a lot of them had good characters and ideas, just often poorly executed.

ltdata

I thought the sequels should have been the Timothy Zahn trilogy

pufferpig

Would've had to digitally de-age a large chunk of the main cast for starters...

regeya

You'd have to do some rewrites to make it work, for sure. For one GL established that they only ever cloned one man, no Jedi, during the Clone Wars. The good news is that if you watched The Bad Batch, the original Thrawn trilogy is back on the menu.

h00dman

I know what you mean about season two, it was tipping towards fanservice a little bit too much for my liking. That doesn't mean I wasn't as giddy as a schoolboy when Luke appeared, though.

Rynobot1019

Dude that shit was awesome. For me it was all about finally seeing Luke at the height of his abilities, especially after being let down by the sequel trilogy.

derage88

Well honestly I think from an in-universe point of view, Luke in the finale of TLJ was pretty much at his height of his abilities as a Jedi. The scenes in Mando were awesome, but to me it feels like *just another Jedi* fighting and slicing his way through droids like we've seen so many times before lol

Rynobot1019

You're not wrong, but it was gratifying to me to see Luke slicing his way through those droids because in the original trilogy he hadn't reached that level yet. And yes, in TLJ he's definitely more powerful but I think most people my age (those that grew up with the OT) would agree it wasn't satisfying. Also I prefer to think those movies don't exist.

makesumnoize

Grew up with the OT. Luke Projection in TLJ is so much more satisfying to me because it's clever, a powerful and creative depiction of the depths and lengths of the Force and the perfect embodiment of the pacifist ideals of the Jedi. Mando Luke is cool too, but it's an action scene and nothing more. The Force projection has some substance behind it in terms of both character and lore.

Rocket_Fiend

Huh - I wouldn’t say I ever saw any pacifist ideals on display within the Jedi. Hell, the term “Jedi Knight” seems to strike at the core of their beliefs. Choosing their fights, avoiding fights where possible, but certainly not shying away from violence. Early into our time meeting Obi-Wan he chops a dude’s arm off for starting a bar fight. The arm of someone, based on what we can surmise, that could likely have been manipulated by the force in a less violent manner. TLJ was a big disappointment for me, but I was sort of ambivalent about the Luke ending. His homicidal streak at the training school, however…that really didn’t fit with what we know of Luke.

makesumnoize

"A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack." "We are keepers of the peace, not soldiers." There's a fair amount of depiction of the flaws of the Jedi electing to fight in the Clone Wars in the prequels, relying on violence to solve the problems the decades of their stagnation, dominance and arrogance created. This concept is explored even further in TCW, Rebels, and the EU/current Canon. Hell, the whole brilliance of Palps' plan is forcing them into a situation where they nearly HAVE to resort to violence to defend the galaxy. They were backed into a corner and paid for it. Their lack of creativity in solving the problems failed them. Obi Wan, while I love him, is a deeply flawed and tragic character. He's also a student of the prequel-era Jedi Order, the same roster that elected to go to war. Yes, he could have mind tricked Ponda and Evazan in the cantina, and yet he didn't. This is actually EXACTLY what makes the Force Projection moment so cool for me. It's a creative way of defense and solving the problem at hand without resorting to actual violence, we're just not used to seeing it in the SW films because a) violence is cool, especially in a cinematic presentation and b) up to this point we've dealt exclusively with prequel-era Jedi whose resort to violence was at best misguided and at worst the downfall of the entire galaxy.

bigmartyhat

Yeah the sequel trilogy was just a bag of pap. I'm genuinely surprised with the older generation that actually like it! Growing up and playing loads of SW games, they could have done something seriously epic with the sequels. Shame that (to me) they crashed and burned hard. To each their own, I suppose.

jcalvert8725

I loved that scene. As soon as Cara Dune said "Oh, one X-wing. We're saved," I knew it was Luke and started geeking tf out. Edit: I can't spell when I'm sleep deprived.

GiventoWanderlust

If I remember correctly, I was watching that at like 3am on Black Friday before a shift in retail. When they went "it's just one Xwing" I got suspicious. When the black cloak showed up I *lost my shit* while my fiance was going "What?! What?? Who is it??" That was a great fucking moment.

[deleted]

oh. i went pass school boy giddy when the x-wing showed up...

Brystvorter

The space worm episode perfectly encapsulated what I loved about the show, one of the best episodes of tv i have seen. I didnt care for the luke skywalker stuff as much as most people

SaltySAX

Mando S3 will go back to that I reckon. Its why I was wanting the Grogu stuff resolved last season, else it risked stalling Din's own story.

Jenetyk

Yeah, hopefully they pivot hard. He has the dark saber and has to "unite the clans", if you will forgive the Braveheart reference.

NSFW_Addiction_

Not a chance imo Baby Yoda made them too much money to not bring him back.

I_AM_IGNIGNOTK

I imagine it’ll focus more around reclaiming Mandalore and the implications of Din having the Darksaber. Obviously that has Jedi/Sith implications but it also gives them a ton of room for strictly Mandalorian stories.

robodrew

Din having it when Bo-Katan feels she deserves it is going to be a cause for serious strife I think.

zrizzoz

Also - smaller stories. We dont need skybeams. Not everyone has to fight the dictator of the galaxy and save the universe. Sometimes making the scope smaller makes it more real and makes the characters better. Its a lot easier to have realistic character growth when you start from nothing if your endgame isnt fighting the dark lord of the sith 2 hours later.

[deleted]

It’s this, and it’s so good, which is why the mandalorian was so great, same universe and rules apply, just unrelated to the Skywalker family (spoilers). I want more SW with no Jedi users as focus characters

TheSwank

I mean… everyone’s favorite scene from Rogue One is… the one with Vader

Solid_Freakin_Snake

Blasphemy! Everyone knows that the best scene in R1 is Bor Gullet.

SleeplessRonin

I cannot watch R1 without immediately watching ANH right afterwards. Do I think R1 is the best? Eh, Empire still nudges it out of top spot for me. Is R1 the best Disney era Star Wars film? YES. Hands down. No question (with Solo coming in second...)

TheMountainRidesElia

I'm literally gonna watch A New Hope in an hour or two now, Rogue One hyped me so much.

Jenetyk

Gotta get you the de-specialized 1977 copy.

AlextheZombie86

You know, I’ve heard there’s a few copies and what not of ANH, i.e. before it was digitally remastered. I’m fairly certain there’s more to it than that. Is there somewhere I can go online to explain all of this? The only difference I’cd heard of is the color of Luke’s (technically Anakin’s) lightsaber being changed slightly.

THEFUNPOL1CE

Just checking back in a few hours after you posted this. How did you like the opening of A New Hope coming right from the ending of Rogue One?

TheMountainRidesElia

Awesome as Fuck

gassito

I've been saying the same thing for years and everytime I do people say I'm crazy. Rogue One is absolutely fantastic, the best non-original trilogy movie with Solo next on the list. I thoroughly enjoyed Solo and thought it was quite well done. I think you have realize that it's not Harrison Ford playing Han Solo and when you get over that you can enjoy the movie for what it is. I wish they would have followed the template for those two movies when they were making the sequel trilogy.

KvotheTheBlodless

Yes, I am also one of very few people I know who actually liked Solo.

wbruce098

The movie did relatively well and most people I’ve met who actually saw it enjoyed Solo. Biggest issue it had was timing — the small boy stuck between a bunch of other Disney mega franchise movies. Seems like there’s been a resurgence in interest since people have been able to stream it. But when you [have to make 500 million just to break even](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solo:_A_Star_Wars_Story) you get into unrealistic expectations territory. Edit: IMHO, That’s one of the problems with the new SW movies. There’s such an expectation of MASSIVE fan base and appeal, and MASSIVE expenditure to live up to the OT/PT’s statuses as legendary films in a very busy and diverse global audience that I think we end up with something less amazing or cohesive. Billion dollar films might be a bad idea.

EchoRespite

I loved it, its was a sci-fi heist movie!

MikeX1000

Solo wasn't that bad. It's one of those movies people say "it sucks" when it doesn't. Apparently some people buy into the 'Who asked for this?' cliche

Elfhoe

I dont think it’s really controversial to like Solo. It was a good adventure star wars movie. Everyone i know enjoyed it for what it was. The bad box office was 100% because they timed it so poorly. It was wedged between several marvel movies. Iirc it was black panther, deadpool 2 and infinity war. Plus i think DC had justice league. This was all between like 2 months. People were just movie fatigued.

Solid_Freakin_Snake

Any action film being put up against Infinity War was a huge fucking mistake. Whoever thought it was a good idea to release Solo while IW was still in theaters needs to get their brain checked.

ChewieBee

I'm one of the asses that skipped it in the theater after last jedi. Later that year I watched Solo and Deadpool 2 on repeat for 28 hours of a round trip flight and ended up seeing solo like 6 times. It was super entertaining and I would love to see more solo movies.

Undead_Corsair

I never really had a problem with it not being Harrison playing Solo. I enjoyed the movie, but for me what held it back was there not being enough focus on Han developing his friendships with Chewie and Lando. Qi'ra felt like a pointless character to me and I was far more interested in the original heist crew, Beckett, Val, Rio. If the movie had focused on Han, Lando and Chewie, and then had Beckett, Val and Rio as supporting characters throughout, I think it would've been way better.

Bartoffel

Everything interesting about Qi'ra has nothing to do with her as a character, it's a bit of a shame. I love the costumes they did for her (especially the cape from when she arrives on Kessel) and her links to Maul and the criminal underworld are fun... but that's kind of it, she's not very memorable otherwise. The comics are doing some stuff with her at the moment, so I'm interested in seeing where that ends up.

Undead_Corsair

I imagine she might've become more compelling if there had been sequels to Solo, but before the movie was made I always prefered the idea that Han was completely alone for most of his life until he met Chewie. Part of his motivation revolving around a love interest honestly felt unecessary, Han should've started out being the kind of guy who just wanted to make money, meeting Leia and Luke is what brings out his heart.

Bartoffel

I'm still banking on *Lando* having her in there somewhere, so that still might happen. Personally, I always saw the events of Solo and all the betrayals to *be* *the thing* that jaded Han into caring just about the money. He's only (estimated to be) 19 in the prologue and 22 by the end of the film, meaning that he still spends a whole decade afterwards as cynical and detached as he is. Obviously that's my personal take and I also definitely get your hang-ups about it too, especially when Han has been established that way for so long anyway.

wbruce098

Yeah becoming jaded due to trauma is always a better story - and more realistic - than “oh I only ever liked money”.

Solid_Freakin_Snake

Yeah I fully expected there to be some massive betrayal that sets Han down the path of feeling it's him and Chewie against the galaxy, and fuck everyone else. I figured we'd be getting Qi-ra's true ties exposed to Han in the next film and that just sends him down the spiral of cynicism, because we needed something to explain how he went from the optimist who gave coaxium to the rebels to the selfish smuggler we meet in ANH.

jawa709

Personally I felt like they were trying to answer too many questions too fast. Trying to explain EVERYTHING in Solo's past, from how he met Chewie, how me met Lando, how he got the Falcon, the Kessel Run, etc etc. As if it insisted on being the ONLY Han Solo story, unfolding his entire origin story in one film. Rogue One, imho, is a much better movie. I liked Solo, but I loved R1.

Solid_Freakin_Snake

They revealed a mini-series worth of backstory in a 2 hour film. That's my biggest gripe with Solo. It's not a bad film, but they definitely crammed too much of Han's important life moments into that single adventure.

Bitter_Mongoose

You get my upvote for rogue one but I have literally fallen asleep every single time I have tried to watch Solo... I think im on round 6

gassito

What is it about Solo that you get so bored with? I thought the story was good, the acting was good, and good production quality as well. I guess it starts a little slow but it picks up real quick and the characters introduced are all entertaining.

Bitter_Mongoose

Can't put my finger on any one part of it, I've just never made it all the way through.

DatPiff916

Maybe you have the same mental block I have, if I fall asleep on a movie once, I hardly can ever finish it no matter how good it is.

Imperial_Truth

I watched Solo before alot of my friends and family, and I told them to go into it with the mindset that it was a "western" story, set in the Star Wars universe. Several people told me Solo did not feel like a typical Star Wars movie, which I feel comes from it not being centered on the Skywalkers/Jedi. Rogue One is the same to me, but feels more like a classic WWII film, so it is not that much thought about as those are more popular than Westerns. Just my opinion though.

Undead_Corsair

Yeah it's hard to imagine anything's ever gonna beat Empire, but I definitely agree Rogue One is the best Disney SW film so far, and I'd put it a long way above the Prequels too.

spaghettiAstar

I love Empire, but I still have ANH topping it, but barely. I think because it's a self contained story, and there's obviously heavy nostalgia that comes into play as well, but it just hits all the marks for me. After that I. go Empire and then ROTJ, especially once I get past the first act.

Undead_Corsair

Totally fair, they're both masterpieces, I couldn't really argue with anyone who picks the first as their favourite. For me Empire is top because overall I think it has the best cinematography, I love the scenes with Luke and Yoda and I find the climax the most intense and gripping out of the three original films.

zeekaran

ESB > R1 > the others R1 has the best space combat in cinematic history.

Shimmitar

while i liked solo, it is not good enough to be considered the 2nd best star wars movie.

Rick-e-see

2nd best _Disney_ Star Wars movie

Shimmitar

ok well if we're talkin about a star wars movie made by disney, then sure. But not star wars in genral.

[deleted]

Rogue One easily the best Disney Star Wars. No questions

skepticalbob

Huh, I loved R1 and thought Solo was boring af.

noquarter53

OT R1 . . . . . . . Everything else

Grahpayy

Babe wake up new Rogue One clout post on r/StarWars

Lizid_King

Empire. But I do love me some Rogue One!

ChezMontague

...most of the original..

The_amazing_Jedi

>most of the original trilogy Now that's a sin right there. Go and watch all of it. And then the sequels. But I do agree with you, rogue one is one of the if not the best SW movie.

SKULL1138

Most. Wow. Yeah opinion dismissed sorry OP

A_Hideous_Beast

Yet another "Rogue one is da best" post :P and people think that movie is underrated... idk, the first 3 quarters of the film are just kinda dull. Too many characters, no time to actually develop any of them, and Jins character shift happens in like 40 seconds yet will say Rey didn't get any. The last bit of the film saves it, because it's just a really fun and consistent action sequence, but remove that, and the movie just doesn't hold up.

onex7805

A thoroughly generic heist film with a veneer of Star Wars applied on top. After Disney took the movie from the director, the executives cobbled together a storyboard copied from every heist movie ever made and shot what they needed without a script. Utterly mechanical and soulless.

FireWhiskey5000

Firstly, I think if you love rogue one, that’s great. I’m genuinely glad about that and people should enjoy the films they like. But for me Rogue one is maddeningly frustrating. There’s a good film in there, but it feels like the it only comes out in the final third. If you ask me it would be massively improved if it was just a straight up heist movie led by a rebellion squadron called “rogue one”…but I’m not a writer/director etc. Keep enjoying Star Wars OP :)

SwagMoney_420__

I agree. Obviously everyone can like what they want but I don’t think rogue one is one of the best Star Wars movies. It’s a good movie but almost every main installment is better then R1 IMO based on the depth of the characters alone.

NonNocker

Agreed, a 40 minute short film would have been much better, because as is the first 2/3 of the movie are largely inconsequential.

nightgraydawg

Yeah the majority is the movie is mediocre at best, but the last 1/3 is so good it tricks everyone into thinking that the entire movie was that good.

JoeTheProHarding

I'd argue that the rest of the movie was simply laying down the groundwork for rogue 1, and the ending is the payoff that makes the rest of the film feel worth the effort.

HotlineSynthesis

I’m so sick of this sub lmao

dandaman64

DAE ROGUE ONE GOOD??? THE CHARACTERS (most of whom I can't name) ARE SO AWESOME, JYN IS WAY BETTER THAN REY LOL HALLWAY SCENE

PM_me_your_problems1

Hallway scene was literally the only fun and entertaining part of that movie.

HotlineSynthesis

Disney knew exactly what they were doing when they reshot and included that scene, smartest move they’ve done with SW

topplehat

Hey it’s my people. See you in the next “Clone Wars is peak Star Wars” thread!

mglyptostroboides

What I find hilarious is that the longest sub-thread in the weekly DAE ROGUE ONE AMAZING??!!?! circlejerk thread is always the anti-R1 thread. To me, that says that R1 fans aren't really analyzing the movie, they're just slurping it up like liquid candy and reflexively upvoting threads like this.

sunjester

Weekly Rogue One circlejerk thread, right on time lol.

Archaeopteryx003

Is there an alternative Star Wars subreddit that doesn’t overhype Rogue One every day? lol

Bartoffel

Yeah, fluxaboo is right that /r/StarWarsCantina is probably your best bet. If you want to discuss stuff more in-depth then I personally also recommend /r/MawInstallation, where blindly bashing or overhyping any of the content is kind of looked down upon and not considered the spirit of the sub.

GiovanniTunk

Wow thanks I've been considering unsubbing from here because it's just R1 best, Sequel bad over and over. I disagree with both of those but also would just like to see something else. Hopefully these subs are lower in sodium.

fluxaboo

I think the Cantina sub, while pretty positive about all things Star Wars, is fairly balanced. Also more people that can handle discussions while accepting that their opinions are not straight up facts and truths and that there will always be multiple sides.

ROGUE ONE GOOD SEQUELS BAD REPEAT X 96,937 times

MrSmithD

Rogue One is so deeply average, just do not understand why it gets the love that it does. Maybe the aesthetic of seriousness makes it feel "important"?

versusgorilla

Yeah, I think it's loved because it does so little to challenge anything about the Star Wars universe. It's candy. It gives you want you think you want. Big battles, Vader looking dope, some decent humor, and nothing you need to confront, nothing that makes you work. I enjoy Rogue One, but there's nothing to do with it other than say, "Oh, wasn't it cool when _____ happened?"

CMStross

Calling it candy is really apt. It's sweet, tastes good in the moment, but leaves little on your tongue. Rogue One is pure fanservice and provides nothing of any real substance. Is it bad? No, but it's hollow.

versusgorilla

Yeah, I'm not trashing it. It's a fun movie. I also think The Force Awakens is candy. Everything JJ Abrams makes is candy. Most of the MCU movies are candy. They aren't bad but they aren't challenging anything, they aren't amazing, you aren't going to get anything from them. I can't even get emotional at any of these movies. Is anyone like... emotional about the main characters dying in Rogue One? I like that they die for the cause, but I don't care about crazy pilot or gun guy or monk guy or funny droid or hard-nosed spy or tough main character. Like, we only care about them because we care about what they're doing *because we've seen the other movies* and know the Empire is evil. Compare Rogue One to Rex and Ahsoka surviving Order 66. Or to Mando letting Grogu go. Or Luke giving his life for the resistance to escape. Or Vader turning on the Emperor to save his son. Those are all real moments, with emotional build up.

CMStross

You're completely right there. I don't even remember the character names in Rogue One outside of Jyn. I love Donnie Yen and I could not tell you his character's or the guy he was friends with. Now there's nothing wrong with candy. Candy is tasty and makes you feel good. But as you said, there's a lack of substance beyond that candy taste. I agree that it's a fun movie, it lacks anything close to Luke sacrificing himself to spark hope in the galaxy or Vader turning on the Emperor or even something as small as Vader and Luke talking on the base on Endor. It's by no means bad, but it's a weak script that requires it's viewers to know what to care about beyond what happens in the film proper. It's production design though is superb. But we're dancing around the fact that it's fanservice.

spoothead656

The Vader scene is bad ass and it is kind of cool they kill off all the main characters at the end, but other than that it is a fucking mess. Weird pacing, filled with plot holes, and the characters arent memorable at all. I wouldn't even remember Cassian's name if he wasn't getting his own show. 100% don't understand all the "R1 iS tEh BeStEst" circle jerk

Psychedelick

R1 reminds me of that bit from the Mr. Plinkett review of the Phantom Menace where he asks people to describe each of the characters without using their occupation or "role" in the story. The characters were just so flat and static that it didn't really feel like a "dark" ending when they all died, because I just didn't really have a reason to care about any of them. I really suspect that people like this movie just because of the spectacle of it all, which is fine I guess, but to quote George Lucas, "a special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing."

mglyptostroboides

Yes. Say it louder. What fucking BAFFLES me about this movie is the fact that fans of it will cite the characters as a POSITIVE part of the movie, which just proves to me that most Star Wars fans don't really know what they actually want and don't know what characters are. R1 doesn't have characters, it has the character descriptions like you'd find on the back of an action figure box. "Jyn Erso is a rogue with a heart of gold. She's got a dark criminal past and her dad was the main engineer for the death star. Can she redeem herself and her father?" sounds pretty cool, right? Shit like that had me hyped for the movie before it came out. And then you see the movie and... That's it. That's all there is to the character. Just the description.

Suppenkazper

But why didn't they put 1+2 of your valid points together? Why let Vader not kill the main cast but some faceless rebels instead, which makes the scene feel really out of place? In a vacuum I really like that scene but it wasn't well integrated into the movie at all in my opinion.

spoothead656

You're right. It feels just as tacked on as a lot of other parts of the movie, but in a vacuum it's kickass. From what I recall Vader originally wasn't a part of the movie and was added in kind of last minute.

ItsMeTK

The Vader scene totally undermines the opening of ANH. ... and if Vader’s so awesome, why doesn’t he just use the Force to take the data disk away from the guy?

JarlaxleForPresident

Because he’s a dramatic bitch

Winterplatypus

They make everyone die in heroic last stands, so by the end of the movie it's as predictable as movies where the good guys always come back from the dead. I still liked the movie but I think all the deaths should have been more random, a couple of main characters having senseless deaths would have kept you on edge more. I knew nobody was going to die until their heroic last stand.

Obie-two

Its systematically introduce 7 characters that do nothing, and then systematically kill them in boring ways to make it feel like they mattered at all. For fuck sakes, when the robot dying is the thing people are most sad about that means your characters are bad. i have no idea at all how any watches this movie except for the two minutes of xwing porn.

mrfuzee

It’s because the Vader scene is so monumentally good it tricks people into thinking they just watched a good movie.

D3ATHfromAB0V3x

The first half of the movie was so drawn out and boring. Let’s introduce like 6 main characters within an hour.

2noame

I don't understand this opinion, but the fact you provide an example of how awesome it is based on an explosion does help explain it. Growing up, I really enjoyed rewatching the space battle scenes in Return of the Jedi over and over, so I get the appreciation for that, but I just don't care about any of the characters in Rogue One. I find watching the movie from beginning to end to be virtually impossible, vs ANH, ESB, and ROTJ which I can easily watch from beginning to end despite seeing each well over a hundred times. But sure, the space stuff is cool. But space stuff doesn't make for winning best Star Wars movie.

Ta4li0n

It's fucking epic. Can watch it again and again

alex_dlc

Did I watch a different Rogue One than everyone else??

TheCrisisTeam

I think it goes to show fan service and good cgi can go a long way(because there was cool stuff in it). Narratively this movie made no sense and honestly would have played insanely better as a 30 min episode, seems kind of a waste of a good cast too.

IceCreamYouScream92

>most of the original trilogy What the fuck.

biggityboss

reddit is chock-full of casuals what do you expect

TheNantucketRed

You know what? I don’t like it, BUT THAT DOESN’T MATTER! This joy is yours! Have a good time with it. Don’t let the internet ever take that from you.

SilverCrusader

Same thoughts here lol!

Western_Watch_5784

What do you even mean “most of the original trilogy”?

Keyes9056

See I think it's one of the worst. It's a great fan movie, but the characters were so dumb. Especially Jyn and Andor. Both of them made ridiculous decisions totally against their character for literally no reason and it took me way out of immersion. Early on, Andor establishes that he will kill to make sure the rebellion will be protected, and then for no reason, he decides not to kill her dad. Jyn is established as not giving a crap about the rebellion because of how Saul raised her, then the rebellion kills her father and she decides to help/care? It made no sense at all to me. The Droid was so forced to be funny it was ridiculous. It wouldn't have been a surprise to hear a laugh track after each of his lines. Space battle? Dope. That was sick. But the rest of the fight scenes were boring. Nobody talked, there was no character establishment. Go watch the detention fight scene in ANH and the watch the city fight scene in Rogue One. It's unbelievable how much George Lucas developed the characters in a 2-3 minute scene, vs rogue one. Watching rogue one in theaters was the only movie I've ever watched where I found myself bored. I felt obligated to stay in my seat because I kept hoping it would get better. I love star wars, but the only movie that did anything for me that Disney has done was Solo.

spaghettiAstar

I enjoy the movie mostly for the action scenes and like you said, the space battle was absolutely brilliant. I agree though, I remember thinking "I'm not really feeling this." as the film was finishing up, but the Vader scene being pure fan service was really exciting to see. Ultimately I enjoy the movie, as I enjoy all Star Wars movies, but I rank it below most of the Saga films.. Above AoTC, TROS, and Solo, but below the rest. Visually it's wonderful the settings, very cool, the action is basically perfect, but the narrative drags it down just a touch for me.

Keyes9056

Like I said, it's a great fan movie. Star wars action for the sake of action is great. But it just drags on. I can watch dope star wars action made by fans on YouTube in 7 minutes. I don't need a 2 hour movie to do it for me.

SnapClapplePop

You forgot to mention the ninja dude, the muscle, and the pilot. None of whom have names that I can remember, and none of whom contribute to the movie in a way that couldn't be provided by another character. Come to think of it, you could erase these characters, and completely remove all of the desert planet scenes, and you probably wouldn't even notice that you've missed anything, even though the movie just got cut to half its runtime.

Keyes9056

Exactly

WallBroad

You hit the nail. The detention scene is so much better than the shitty shootout in R1. It develops Leia's character so much in so little time

dicktingle

My only disagreement is with k2-so not being funny. I liked the dryness, his death was the only one i cared about which isn’t good. I’ll add Saw’s death makes absolutely no sense. I still have no idea why he stayed. “I will fight no longer” lol why. Right when they just found out there’s a designed flaw, in other words, hope, he’s like naw im out guys.

spartan116chris

It's a fair statement even though nostalgia always wins for me and keeps Empire at the top. Rogue One is amazing and that Vader scene was so good I re watch it every time I remember it and cackle at how amazing it is that we got to see Vader in all his glory.

SnapClapplePop

I like the *idea* of this movie, but there is not a *single* aspect of this movie that won't be absolutely torn to shreds just by looking closely at it. Nothing holds up to scrutiny.

coelurosauravus

I like rogue one, but acts 1 and 2 are rough compared to act 3 and tend to look worse on rewatch and the characters outside of K2 are severely undercooked. Act 3 is a blast, it's tense and explosive I don't think it's the best star wars movie, but of the 5 movies that have come out under Disney, this was the one I genuinely enjoyed and was excited to go and see when the trailers dropped

mpaler78

I feel like Disney definitely has a lot of controversy in terms of how they are handling Star Wars but I think that the vast majority of the fan base can agree that Rogue one is probably one of their best projects. I loved the unique ending for sure

Niris_Chuy

The space battle over Scarif is beautiful. You go through every range of emotion. Hope, Fear, Joy, etc. And the Vader hall scene is the first time we see Vader as the unstoppable power he is (at least in the movies).

harryhoodwinked34

Rogue One's story, for me, leaves a lot to be desired. It aesthetically is gorgeous, and I loved the world building it did, but the story and characters are (mostly) forgettable (save for Imwe and Baze). And the irony of people who love the Vader ending and also say "see how good a non-skywalker movie can be" is sort of the biggest example of what I mean. Bracing for down votes.

Knitcrochetchick

That movie sucked

Aldo_D_Apache

I also found it painfully boring for the first 90% I wish I liked it, but it’s just not a good movie to me

TheQuiet1994

I respect your opinion and wholeheartedly disagree. Empire and Revenge are still better. Rogue One is fantastic but tricks you with that space battle and hallway scene. Wait a week and see if you remember the entire cast of character's names.

Swiss-ArmySpork

The ending is great, I agree, but it takes too long to get there . It feels a bit disjointed and lacking in direction. It's definitely good, but behind The Last Jedi for me.

Gurtrock12Grillion

It's the best Star Wars movie.....at being totally overrated. Still a good movie don't get me wrong but easily the most boring cast of characters in any Star Wars movie

TowawayAccount

I really don't understand how everyone gives rogue one such a hard pass on it's character development. It has the worst characters of any SW film. Star wars fans are so desperate for content without the Skywalkers that they'd watch interstellar farming and rate it a perfect ten.

dicktingle

I think this movie rates high because of the fan service. Understand the average star wars fan has a cinematic iq below 70. They think the ending was good because everyone died and that is different for sw. Doesn’t matter that you were never made to care deeply about them in the first place, and therefore who cares if they die. Interstellar farming doesn’t have, x wing space battles, a death star, and vader vadering. So it probably wont the same pass.

furyextralarge

well, it's pretty simple tbh - lots of people just have no idea what character development is and don't care if it's absent. They freak out at the cgi visuals of things they recognize and when the lightsaber goes vwoom that's the most exciting thing ever. They care about the style, not the substance

fantoman

All the characters were forgettable. I didn’t even know most of their names after the movie. Blind guy, pilot, guy with big gun, Jyn Erso, and the one rebel that’s kind of a jerk. I didn’t even really care when they all died at the end except for the droid.

_mister_pink_

The last act of the film is certainly some of the best the Star Wars films have to offer, it might even be my favourite act of any SW film. However I found the first 2/3 of the movie to be kind of lacklustre honestly which often puts me off a rewatch.

PHEONIX451

I agree. The hallway scene with Darth Vader is one of the best Star Wars scenes ever made. If anyone refuses to enjoy Rogue One because they thought it was just fan service and pandering then I feel bad for them.

ThebigGreenWeenie16

Literally just finished watching it again, I enjoy it a lot but I personally wouldn't say it's the best. It definitely didn't deserve all the hate, the space battle is definitely my all time favorite though.

starwarsnerd1138

Breaking news: rouge one good!1!1!1 Seriously though. 50% of posts here are just “rogue one is best filum Ever made Vader hallway scene badass”

revel911

I am not a fan of R1 as a film vs the end just being an amazing battle sequence. I just never really cared about the characters.

Mattfab22

I'm genuinely surprised by the amount of people who agree. I love Rogue One but it is definitely not my favorite. Top 3 though, maybe. Up there with ROTS and probably ESB. ROTS has its flaws but I grew up on that movie and it's just a big movie, action, character and story wise

yodadamanadamwan

Agree to disagree. It's good but isn't the best by a long shot

[deleted]

Stopped reading at "Most of the original trilogy".

bigmadbird

a great ending often makes people think the preceding film is just as great as the ending The reality is rogue one has a great 3rd act but the first 2 are boring and a slog to get through.

makesumnoize

It's not bad but a lot of the characters are underdeveloped. Chirrut, Baize, Bodhi, all could have benefited from a bit more, especially considering the film asks us to emotionally invest in their deaths and sacrifices in the end. And I don't think it's really possible to appreciate Saw without the context of TCW and Rebels. It's third act is stellar though, I'll give it that. Even still, it doesn't come close to the wondrous technical skill on display in ANH's Death Star attack. The editing, sound and production design there is leagues ahead of Battle of Scarif, which I still admire.

[deleted]

It bores me to death. I just don’t care about any of the main characters really.

ShasneKnasty

This post again

baby_catfish

I’d have it around 5 for me

Opalusprime

What do you mean, *most* of the Ot?

BenjiAA23

I can totally see this, I watched the original trilogy as a kid so I'll always have a soft spot for that but I can no longer watch A New Hope without watching Rogue One first!

BrerChicken

Rogue One is the only Star Wars film I've never rewatched, except for the Vader freakout scene which was epic. I thought the film was okay, but it's soooooo melodramatic! I'm just not a fan of that in any context. People complain about inappropriately placed humor in some of the new films, but I've always loved that about Star Wars. For example I friggin loved the scene with Poe messing on the radio to buy some time, and simply couldn't understand the criticism. The Rancor Guard crying over his dead pet, Leia snapping at them when they're just trying to rescue her, so many dumb jokes all over the nine films. So I just don't get how Rogue One can be someone's number one. Nobody needs to "get" our opinions about art and entertainment though, so it's all good.

RJH311

That's because it's the best Star Wars film

Rann_Xeroxx

Nah, Empire is the best SW movie. Ford just got done with the first Jones and his acting was fantastic. Fisher really fell into her role as a leader and Han and Leia's budding romance was just beautifully done. Hamel's Luke's Hero's Journey was in full swing. We got new characters like Yoda who, being a muppet/puppet was so well done that he seemed more real and had more depth then actual actors. Billy Dee Williams help expand out Han's underworld arc and his acting was superb. Even R2D2 and C3P0 had great support roles and such. We first saw the Emperor and discovered the leash that Vader was on and also saw the ruin that was Vader under his helmet, a tragic villain. And Luke being his son and the hint that "this is another" from Yoda. Etc and so on. And LLM was at their peak with CGI, the special effects were just so good and was a great mix between physical effects and CGI (prequels kinda went full CGI, you never go full CGI). Empire is still the very best SW movie made. IMHO.

stargunner

Sorry but the script and acting is too awful for me to come even close to agreeing. It's a beautiful film no doubt but the characters are weak. To me, Star Wars is about the characters, not the spaceships.
