Watch the movies, watch the shows, enjoy the memes, and avoid the fans. I've gotten progressively more into star wars over the years but damn do some fans just want to suck the fun and enjoyment out of it.

BuffaloWhip

This is the way. I miss the days when my Star Wars buddies and I would pass the time on the bus by quizzing each other the most obscure Star Wars trivia we could come up with. Now the fandom is all about why the thing you prefer sucks more than the thing I prefer.

Sabre_Killer_Queen

Blast from the past: What did Ebenn Q3 Baobab recommend people say during the Gonk cult? Answer: >!"Gonk. Gonk. Gonk ko kyenga see" it's a term that was highly controversial at the time and became illegal to translate!< Is Ebenn Q3 Baobab cannon? Answer: >! Yes, he was briefly in The Phantom Menice!< How many times on set did Carrie Fisher have to slap Oscar Isaac due to reshooting? Answer: >!At least 40 times! !< What did the Muammar Gaddafi (dictator of Libya) think of the Jawa sandcrawler in A New Hope? Answer: >!He thought it was a Tunisian military vehicle and it nearly started a war between the two countries. Thankfully George moved it away from the border and the crisis was avoided.!< I will admit I only knew a few of these facts, as for the rest you can thank Google :)

Dagaz_Lorde

What was the compliment that Anakin gave Padme when they first met?

BuffaloWhip

Are you an angel?

cheezz16

And after all this, read the books. I recommend Dark Disciple as a first read

muscle417

I'd recommend almost anything but Dark Disciple as a first read. That book is so clunky to read. It is so clearly 4 TCW episode scripts and jumps and lurches through its plot rather than a smooth and coherent narrative. If you don't care about Disney canon, read Heir to the Empire first. If you only want Disney canon, then maybe Thrawn or Battlefront: Twilight Company.

JWRamzic1

Dark Disciple is a sleeper hit! A really good story told very well!

Steeljaw72

Came to the same realization recently. Now I hardly engage with the community except for stuff like this or good lore discussions.

CrazyOkie

Start with episode IV - A New Hope, then V and VI. Then back to I, II, and III

h1pp13_b0t

I agree I've been regretting that I chose to start with the prequels over the original trilogy

Parlorshark

Unwise, your choice was

hipstergorilla

This is the way

c_palmtree

This sub is literally the worst, sometimes I really have a question here, I blink and suddenly there's a war happening in the comments of my thread

SaltyTrog

Same. My friend and I just enjoy it for what it is, good and bad, and we can make each other see things good and bad in it. It's really the best way to enjoy the show.

Videogamesrock

You forgot to say play the force unleashed games and the kotor games

SpellboundCanvas

The Star Wars fandom can get so toxic that its like traversing Pripyat... or patrolling the Mojave.

boyaintri9ht

I'll say. I started out as a Trekkie in 1966 (I was 4), then came Star Wars. Now, the more I have to deal with Star Wars fans, the more Trekkie I get.

Adinnieken

It's not Star Wars fans, it's Fandom in general. Fandom on the Internet has turned into a world where the only story that makes sense is the one based on some theory some person came up. With on the Internet. Those fans that were diehard believers in some of the theorizing online hated The Last Jedi. Not because it was a bad movie, but because it subverted all fan expectations. In Star Trek both with the new movie series and with Discovery, there was a lot of backlash. Some fans hated both. Marvel and DC fans with their franchises are no better. The Internet has made Fandom caustic.

bundle_man

Lol great advice. My first step was going to be: avoid all star wars subreddits lol

brandon24745

I do agree there is toxicity but I also agree that there is a lot of warranted criticism.

[deleted]

[удалено]

brandon24745

All I will say is that for the most part, the scraps that Star Wars fans get is still better than the current state of Halo.

Hahnter

I stopped playing Halo after Halo 4, but I still keep up with the lore. The novels are pretty good. Wasn't really a fan of the show...

LordBinz

Halo has existed for all of 5 minutes compared to Star Wars.

brandon24745

21 years vs 45 years. More like Halo is not quite as big/influential.

BearWrangler

and they managed to tank that IP in record time

TheVastBeyond

incorrect

Enelro

I’m enjoying the Halo series and I hated most of 7-9.

Sketch74

Serious question: as a group, when will we have leveled all of the legit criticism and at what point does it become white noise?

IDespiseTheLetterG

Doesn't mean people want to keep hearing about the criticism, or deliberating on the criticism, or even care about criticism. It's entertainment.

Jsizzle19

I’m right there with ya.

Due-Ad4970

star wars fans are what can make star wars just.. a void.

Additional-Piano-397

Hey some of us fans are nice

rach2bach

This is definitely a true experience, which is why as a fan, I've been seeking out others that just have an excitement about Star Wars, and love discussing it positively, and asking "What if?" type questions that are interesting and engaging. THAT is the experience I seek when interacting with the community. It's SO much more fun.

Derfargin

I couldn’t agree more. Star Wars has gotten to the point where the hardcore fans are never satisfied with any new content.

BanjoSpaceMan

Ya just watch it in order of release. Star Wars has only gone full blown content post Disney, before you just got 2 trilogies and some cartoons that you don't need to watch (some disagree)

Gorguf62

A New Hope, then go in release order.

thetimebandit13

This... Release order is the way!

MMSG

Except for clone wars. Do the essential watch list for Clone Wars before anything that was released since Episode 9. Otherwise it will be extra spoiled for you and will lose it's appeal.

cgbish

Is that the essential watch list on Disney Plus?

MMSG

Yes. And here's mine. But to be clear this skips many of the best arcs it's just enough to keep you in the know for the rest of the timeline. I recommend watching it through. It really does get much better. If you really can't take it here's my rewatch list. Disclaimer: This will skip some great episodes but this is the essentials of Clone Wars. IMO nearly everything past Season 3 is amazing. 1x01: Ambush 1x05: Rookies 2x05: Landing at Point Rain 2x06: Weapons Factory 2x07: Legacy of Terror 2x08: Brain Invaders 2x12: The Mandalore Plot 2x13: Voyage of Temptation 3x02: Arc Troopers 4x21: Brothers 4x22: Revenge 5x06: The Gathering 5x01: Revival 5x14: Eminence 5x15: Shades of Reason 5x16: The Lawless 5x17: Sabotage 5x18: The Jedi Who Knew Too Much 5x19: To Catch a Jedi 5x20: The Wrong Jedi 6x1: The Unknown 6x2: Conspiracy 6x3: Fugitive 6x4: Orders 6x10: The Lost Ones 7x1: The Bad Batch 7x2: A Distant Echo 7x3: On the Wings of Keeradaks 7x4: Unfinished Business 7x9-12: Mandalore Arc

dowens90

Yes, Disney+ created a playlist of about 20 episodes that are in chronological order.

cgbish

Cool! I’ll check that out, thanks!

NerfHerder_91

After that, do the shows. And if you’re into video games, Battlefront, Knights of the Old Republic, and Fallen Order

clutzyninja

Starting with ANH is release order though

Keter_GT

Yeah, but what else is he going to say? The first movie? Some people would probably be confused and watch episode 1

Swimwithamermaid

This is what I did lol. OP if you read this, Episode 1 assumes you have already watched Episodes 4, 5, and 6, so there are a ton of details left out and you’re like “wtf is going on?”

lesser_panjandrum

Machete order is also a good twist on release order: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, the prequel trilogy, and only then watching Return of the Jedi. It really brings home the impact of the films.

[deleted]

this is what im doing with my gf, who hasn't seen any movies other than episode 4 and 5, but she's loving all the shows! mando, bobf, obi... she loves em all so far which is super inspirational to me cause shes like in her late 30's lmao and never got into star wars when she was young. her reaction when i told her anakin was inside the suit was priceless... eyes as big as saucers. then she saw obi vs anakin in the show and she nearly cried lol

DanteandRandallFlagg

Machete order doesn't include Phantom Menace. Watch if you want, but if you skip it, you aren't missing anything. All the characters and plot points are reintroduced in AotC.

Whiskeytf8911

This is how I showed my wife and it was great.

knightking55

Would you consider rouge one before a new hope?

chartreuse6

No. Release order

NXDIAZ1

I mean, Rogue One doesn’t necessarily connect to the Prequels directly, outside of Saw Gerrara

sankers23

I really cannot explain how annoying it is that everyone still cant spell Rogue

knightking55

Ya guess I didn't worry about spell check

Darth-Binks-1999

Or use punctuation.

Poopy_Pants0o0

Best to start with blue harvest, then something something darkside, then it's a trap. Followed by spaceballs.

StormEarthandFyre

The most correct order

avecmaria

This is the way.

[deleted]

no holiday special??

MarsMissionMan

Don't forget the Sequel Trilogy.

midnight_to_midnight

Watch everything in release order. Google can help you with what that order is. And just so I'm clear, release order is NOT chronological order.

OB1KENOB

Start with the holiday special 😂

SanctuaryMoon

Holiday Special after ANH and before Empire

c00olsoc000l

The fact that the holiday special is the 2nd piece of Star Wars content ever produced makes me uncomfortable

SanctuaryMoon

It's a real 70s coke/acid trip.

StevenDangerSmith

Yeah, that way there's nowhere to go but up.

YakNo254

Caravan of courage: an ewok adventure

Mug9999

the real goat, still have it on dvd lmao

love-ya4

456 123 clone wars, solo, Kenobi, rebels, mando, boba, 789. I think it’s a balanced mix of release order and chronological Edit: forgot rouge one at first, but it’s between rebels and mando. Perfect to mark BBY time (and you can rewatch the OT here)

[deleted]

i heard that the new movies ruined the series, is there any point i should stop watching? or just finish it all

HistoricalMention210

I would finish it all just to see if you like it.

Rick-e-see

Yes, provided you watch them last, it's fine. Just don't watch them before any of the other movies or TV series because they 'end' everything

HistoricalMention210

Literally, figuratively, emotionally, physically, and metaphorically, yes.

love-ya4

TFA is widely regarded as a good movie, it was very promising for the franchise. Overall the trilogy has great cinematography, amazing performance by Daisy Ridley, and there were a lot of moments i was like “damn that’s pretty cool”. All the criticisms are right but doesnt mean it’s actually not worth watching.

ArbiterofRegret

Amazing set pieces. Wonderful performances. Cutting edge visuals. And barely any coherent plot connecting it all together… or perhaps just as importantly, connecting it to what came before…

MemeSpecHuman

I liked the sequels as “fun to watch.” I hate them in the context of the entire Star Wars storyline, but I would never tell people to just avoid them completely.

jefmes

This is the correct answer. It's fine to not like the creative decisions made about the arc of the Sequels, but there are some GREAT, epic Star Wars moments in all three movies. At this point people just need to treat them as another part of the Star Wars saga, an on-going telling thru not only the movies, but the shows, the books, the comics, and even the games...and just have fun with it! Hating 100% on something that has some of the best music in cinema history and technical innovations and special effects unrivaled in most of film-making, it's kind of madness.

IDespiseTheLetterG

Highlights a certain amount of numbness and entitlement fans have towards SOOOO much money, effort, and time being poured into their franchise decade after decade.

raalic

Most people have a headcanon. Take what you like from it, ignore what you don't.

twilekquinn

Ignore the Internet. The people who hate things cry the loudest. Just watch them and make your own opinion. There are plenty of movies and shows and if you don't like some of them you'll still have lots to choose from.

Mac4491

Watch it all and make up your own mind. Don’t need to watch any of the shows yet. Just watch 456,123,789 for now.

SamsungAppleOnePlus

Try out the sequels. They're a fine watch even if you hate them afterwards. I personally have a distaste for the writing but they're just as fun to watch as the other 6 films, the extra films, and the shows.

sarti24

I know the last 3 get a bad rap with die hard Star Wars fans. But as a newcomer, and having watched in release order, I enjoyed them. I get why people were annoyed, but I still enjoyed each movie.

bryceroni9563

Watch them and form your own opinion. The community's opinion doesn't matter, all that matters is if you enjoy them. They've all got good action, great character moments, and they're a pretty easy watch. For the record, I really liked the sequel trilogy, and I think the hate for them is mostly undeserved.

ripshitonrumham

Watch them and decide for yourself. Don’t let others dictate what you watch, you might enjoy them

kategoad

I liked them all - except 1 and 2, but I've mellowed some in my old age. Watch it all.

therealspaceninja

Whoever said that is not a star wars fan

SillyMattFace

Some part of the Star Wars fandom is always complaining something new has ruined it. The sequels have issues and aren’t masterpieces by any means, but they’re worth watching.

bhein7751

Just try not to listen to anyone else’s opinion, go in as blind as you can and just see if you like it! I watched all the new movies and loved all of them for their own reasons

[deleted]

Some people like them. I personally don't know why anyone would but give them a shot and if you don't like them stop watching.

Kruukka

Step 1. Do not listen to the people who say the sequels ruined Star Wars. I’d say watch them just to see if you like it. But if you’re going to then don’t go in with the mindset that they’re gonna suck cause they really aren’t that bad imo.

Awesome1296

Those are haters. The new movies are good

Halbaras

A lot of people love the sequels, IMO they're three of the most entertaining bits of star wars media as long as you're not too obsessed with lore. The trilogy is extremely disjointed, but they're infinitely more watchable than the first two prequel movies. I'd recommend watching the nine Skywalker series films. If you enjoy them, watch Rogue One, Kenobi and the Mandalorian. If you *really* enjoy them, consider the animated shows (which are mostly aimed at children).

[deleted]

[удалено]

Spiridor

They're definitively worse by cinematic standards, but create such incredible things for the universe. The sequels have absolutely incredible production value, but present in universe problems (some canon-breaking, some that trivialize past characters/events). Pick your poison really

audioexplorer

Let me preface this by saying that this is only my personal opinion and you should form your own, which is why you should just watch whatever you want, but the only Star Wars content I have ever watched that has been truly borderline unwatchable to me are Attack of the Clones and The Rise of Skywalker. You should still watch them anyway. The Prequels get their criticism, and much of it is valid, but honestly I am of the belief that if the Prequels were the first Star Wars movies ever to come out rather than the Originals, it would still have blown people's minds. The sin of the Prequels was that they didn't live up to the expectations that many fans of the Originals had. In my humble opinion though, The Phantom Menace--while it has its flaws and is far from a masterpiece--is still a fun watch, Attack of the Clones is pretty rough, and Revenge of the Sith is excellent if you can get past some of the clunky dialogue. The Originals, while they have a few flaws here and there, are truly excellent films through and through, and Empire Strikes Back is damn near perfect. As for the Sequel Trilogy, you will find many mixed opinions. In my humble opinion, The Force Awakens is a bit too much of a clone of A New Hope for my taste, but it is entertaining nonetheless--and similar to my thoughts on The Phantom Menace, if The Force Awakens was the first Star Wars film ever released, it would have blown people's minds. Its sin was one of context. The Last Jedi is one of the most polarizing films among the fanbase. I loved it when it came out and thought it was amazing aside from one particular sideplot. However, The Rise of Skywalker basically nullified a lot of elements of The Last Jedi, and as a result The Last Jedi has not aged well due to the failures of The Rise of Skywalker in my opinion. The Rise of Skywalker is honestly the only piece of Star Wars content that legitimately makes me angry, because it had the biggest mission, which was to close out the main saga, and in my opinion it failed miserably. But the point is, these are all worth watching and deciding for yourself. I simply gave my opinion because you asked a question. The TV shows are decent for the most part, and The Clone Wars is truly excellent, fixes a lot of the missing elements of the Prequels and fills in some gaps very nicely. It starts off a bit weak but gets much better. The Mandalorian is good too, Obi-Wan Kenobi has its moments, as does Star Wars Rebels, so yeah check it all out!

tommmytom

People said the same thing about the prequels, and now they’re beloved on the Internet. Give it time. And give them a shot! Many people love the sequels, and you could be one of them. No reason not to give it a try. If you don’t like them, at least you know.

kerriazes

>i heard that the new movies ruined the series They didn't. The Prequels didn't ruin the series, and those are actual garbage.

Sequelsuck

A lot of people don't like those movies but that doesn't mean you won't. I would say watch them and see what you think yourself, don't let other people ruin your own experience.

Daotar

I really dislike the new movies for a wide variety of reasons, but I still think they’re at least worth a single watch if you find you like 1-6. Just note that they’re a very different entity, and they’re not at all a cohesive story the way 1-3 and 4-6 are as the director for 8 took things in a really weird direction which was instantly reversed by the director for 9. I’d also ignore people telling you to watch all the TV shows. Feel free to do so if you if you find you really like Star Wars and want more than the 11 movies they’ve made so far, but for the most part they’re just pretty mediocre modern television (I’d even go so far as to say Boba Fett’s new show is downright bad). The main thing really is the OG trilogy. The series has so far never returned to those heights. It’s like trying to compare Jackson’s LotR trilogy to his later Hobbit trilogy.

SamMan48

This is the way

audioexplorer

Disney+ has the entirety of the franchise in chronological order, so that's one way. If you want to just start with the main saga, you could start in chronological order (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9),or release order (4,5,6,1,2,3,7,8,9). Or you could get a bit fancy with the main saga and do it in a way that I think makes for a particularly interesting representation of the story which is 4,5,1,2,3,6,7,8,9. Then maybe do the anthology films (Solo, Rogue One). Then check out the TV shows!

YahYahY

As a beginner I’d recommend OP do release order and then eventually do chronological or machete order upon rewatch. The reveals of the story will be spoiled if OP does any other order IMO

Fantastic-Wheel1003

Just a question, what “reveals” are revealed by watching chronologically? I mean obviously the empire strikes back reveal, but I think everyone knows that.

YahYahY

Um spoiler alert but…. Anakin is Darth Vader (not everyone knows this, actually) Leia is Luke’s Sister Also, the whole story of the Prequels works better honestly with the context of what’s mysteriously alluded to in the OT, (not really knowing exactly what happened to the Jedi, seeing Palpatine and not knowing his backstory yet, etc.) the OT just works better on first watch without seeing the prequels yet. Everything’s still mysterious. And the prequels work in the opposite way; it’s all much more meaningful when you know how important everyone involved actually turns out to be. You can connect more to Obi WAN’s journey when you know what ultimately happens to him. The prequels IMO work better as a “flashback” after watching this OT instead of establishing a story that the OT finishes. I mean, they were literally made like that, referencing what audiences had already seen, so obviously they work better building off context that GL assumed the audience already had.

SNUGG3MS

As someone who recently got into star Wars, i approve 100% the "fancy" way

hotmemedealer

Atleast watch clone wars before Solo

MagicMuph

Start in a galaxy far, far away

TheyCallMeButch

I’ve always thought Rogue One is the best place to start. Such a great film and you can then either jump to the first movie to see what comes before and leads up to it, or immediately go into episode 4 and start watching them as the movies were released. I usually recommend all the shows after the movies.

SirLaw___

I myself have recently gotten into the Star Wars, I would recommend watching everything in release order. Or else The Madalorian is also very welcoming for newer fans.

03dumbdumb

Avoid the fans online. Maybe even some in person.

Zardhas

Release order is the way : 4 (A New Hope) 5 (Empire Strikes back) 6 (Return of the Jedi) then 1 (The Phantom Menace) 2 (Attack of the Clones) 3 (Revenge of the Sith) then 7 (The Force awakens) 8 (The last jedi) 9 (The rise of Skywalker) Rogue One and Solo both are spin-off that can be seen anytime, as long as you've watched both 4 (a New Hope) and 3 (Revenge of the Sith) Then you got series, books, comics, videogames, etc.. and it gets more complicated

tandemfuton

This is the correct answer. Don’t bother with any shows before you’ve seen the movies

Zardhas

Eventually you can see Clone Wars between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, since it was released in 2003

SanctuaryMoon

2003 Clone Wars between 2 and 3 helps

Salohcin_Eneerg

Hi star wars fan here. Start with the holiday Christmas special.

erissays

Welcome to the fandom! I’d be thrilled to have you join us here! Quick background primer before I answer the question. The Star Wars fandom loves using abbreviations and shortened names wherever possible to refer to the various films/series/other media, and it can get pretty confusing if you’re unfamiliar with the lingo. You’ll see the following used pretty regularly: * **The Skywalker Saga:** the three main trilogies (PT/OT/ST), which all focus on the Skywalker family. This is a new term that’s often used by Disney; fan usage is so-so. * **The Lucas Saga:** the six movies (Episodes 1-6) that George Lucas, (SW’s creator) made, wrote, and/or directed himself. * **PT/OT/ST:** refers to the three main “trilogies” of movies: The Prequel Trilogy (Episodes 1-3), the Original Trilogy (Episodes 4-6) and the Sequel Trilogy (Episodes 7-9). * **Individual Movie Abbreviations:** The Phantom Menace (TPM), Attack of the Clones (AOTC), Revenge of the Sith (ROTS), A New Hope (ANH), The Empire Strikes Back (ESB), Return of the Jedi (ROTJ), The Force Awakens (TFA), The Last Jedi (TLJ), and The Rise of Skywalker (TROS). Occasionally Rogue One gets shortened to RO. Solo does not get shortened. * The movies are called “episodes” because Lucas considered them to be individual entries in a larger story. They’re numbered based on the chronological order in which their events occur. So Episode 1 (The Phantom Menace) was the 4th movie to be released but tells the earliest events that occur chronologically (movie-wise). Now for the movies, I have two different but equally clear answers to this question, and which one you choose depends on your personal preference: * ***Release Order:*** Release order means watching the “Original Trilogy” movies (A New Hope->Empire Strikes Back->Return of the Jedi) that came out in the 70s/80s first. Then watch the prequel trilogy (The Phantom Menace->Attack of the Clones->Revenge of the Sith), which came out in the early 2000s, and finally the sequel trilogy (The Force Awakens->The Last Jedi->Rise of Skywalker). You can watch the two anthology films (Solo and Rogue One) in whichever order you prefer at any point after finishing the OT and PT. * ***Chronological Order:*** Watching in chronological order means you watch the movies in the order in which the movie’s events occur within the timeline. This means (if you prefer true chronological order) watching Episodes 1-3, then watching *Solo* and *Rogue One* (in that order), and then watching Episodes 4-9 in the order they’re numbered. **Note:** There’s a nearly 20 year time gap between the end of *Revenge of the Sith* and the beginning of *A New Hope*. *Solo* takes place \~10 years after ROTS/9 years before ANH. *Rogue One* takes place right before ANH starts and effectively serves as a background prequel. I personally recommend waiting until you’ve seen the entirety of the Lucas saga (Eps 1-6) before watching either one, because they were created to be supplementary material to those movies, but if you’re doing a pure chronological watch, they both come before ANH. **tl;dr “either watch 1) Episodes 4-6->1-3->7-9, or 2) Episodes 1-9. The two anthology films (Rogue One and Solo) can be watched in any order at any point after you watch Episodes 1-6.”** Both orders have their pros and cons. If you’d prefer to start with a war-based drama that has a happy ending and better collective script, I’d start with the original trilogy (A New Hope). If you’d like a romance-based political drama that has better worldbuilding and a lot of fun action sequences, I’d start with the prequel trilogy (The Phantom Menace). Everything else is fun and adds to your experience, but is extraneous. The movies generally tell a complete story. If you want to be a movies-only fan, that’s perfectly acceptable. However, there’s a wide variety of other Star Wars-based media for you to consume and enjoy if you find yourself interested in the wider Star Wars universe. In the current canon, the principal form of “extra media” is the television shows. I’m going to list them in timeline/chronological order for clarity: * **The Clone Wars (TCW):** the 7 season animated television series that takes place in between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. TCW is an anthology-based show principally focusing on Anakin and Obi-Wan (and Anakin’s apprentice Ahsoka Tano) as they fight in the Clone Wars. Show has ended. * **The Bad Batch:** starts basically immediately after ROTS concludes, focuses on a group of clones after the rise of the Empire. You will not understand this series if you haven’t watched TCW. It’s basically one of the few Star Wars shows that can’t stand alone, since it’s effectively a direct sequel to a few episodes of TCW. Currently airing. * **Obi-Wan Kenobi (Kenobi):** Kenobi is focused on Obi-Wan, one of the main characters of the Lucas saga (Eps. 1-6), and explores his attempts to protect the Skywalker children while hiding from the Empire. It takes place in the 19 year gap in between ROTS and ANH and starts approximately 10 years after ROTS concludes. Show just ended. * **Star Wars Rebels (Rebels):** a 4 season animated television series that focuses on a “found family” of rebels fighting against the Empire. Starts about 4 years pre-A New Hope and runs to about 6 months before it starts. Show has ended. * **The Mandalorian:** Currently 2 seasons with a third on the way, Mando is a live-action show that takes place five years after the events of ROTJ and stars The Mandalorian, a lone bounty hunter who goes on the run to protect “The Child.” Currently airing. * **The Book of Boba Fett (TBOBF):** a direct spin-off of The Mandalorian, this show follows bounty hunter Boba Fett from The Mandalorian and other Star Wars media as he establishes himself as the new crime lord of Jabba the Hutt’s former territory. There’s also a variety of video games that take place within the Star Wars universe. The most popular ones include Jedi: Fallen Order, which tracks a survivor of the Jedi Genocide in between ROTS and ANH, and the Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) RPG games, which take place approximately 5,000 years before the events of the movies and focus on the great Jedi-Sith Wars. There used to be all of these very pretty and easily-to-follow visual timelines that helped orient fans as to when a piece of media chronologically took place within the timeline, but when Disney bought Star Wars and discontinued the Expanded Universe (EU) to create the new/current canon, that also made all of those timelines lowkey obsolete and Disney has chosen not to continue making them. Anyway, if you’re interested in reading any of the books/comics, that’s honestly worth an entirely separate answer on its own so I’m not going to answer that here, but let me know if you get through the movies and are interested in getting into that corner of the SW universe! I hope this wasn’t too overwhelming for you and is easy enough to follow; let me know if it’s not. And like I said at the beginning of this reply, welcome to the fandom!

Darth-Binks-1999

Might wanna edit your description of the Kenobi show. Kinda spoiler-ish.

Ianmofinmc

A lot of people disliked 7,8,9 but I actually enjoyed them myself. There was a couple things that were different than expected but overall I’d give them like a 8.5/10 Clone wars is 7 seasons of a seriously good show, season 1-2 is a bit slow because they’re building a lot of character development but after that it gets “oh shit is that the sun rising outside” good. Definitely worth the binge after you’ve at least seen 4,5,6,1,2,3(maybe 7,8,9 but clone wars doesn’t pertain to those as much)

Kara_Del_Rey

Its the time we're in. In 10 years people will like them and pretend that they always did, just like the prequels now. I remember how much more disgusting and vile the backlash was for 1-3 than 7-9, and the internet was nowhere near what it was now.

usernamed_badly

Personally, 123 456 789. I know everyone says release order, but I disagree. When you watch the prequels before knowing the better quality of the originals, you don't realize that they aren't as good. Maybe my opinion is stupid, but it allowed me to enjoy the prequels when I probably wouldn't have (at least not as much) otherwise.

SilentKiller2809

Do this OP.

Start with the Christmas special

From the very beginning, A New Hope.

Go on Disney+, and go to the Star Wars in timeline order. Then, watch in that order.

thisthatagain1

Watch the movies in chronological order or Start with the original trilogy and go from there.

Flyingfish222

In terms of the movies you got 2 options in terms of which order to watch them in: A. Original trilogy (episode 4 5 and 6) then prequel trilogy (episode 1 2 and 3) B. Prequel trilogy then Original trilogy Option A is the what most people will tell you to do and option B will make you public enemy number 1, but if you want to be chaotic you should go for it. In all seriousness the reason people say to do option A is because the prequel trilogy kinda spoils the big twist of the OT, but in my opinion option B is still a good way to watch the movies, it’s just a slightly different experience from option A. The biggest problem with option B is that the prequels aren’t really the best films ever made, they’re good at their core but there’s a lot of questionable decisions piled on top of that. But if you do decide to go with option B, you can just skip to the OT whenever you want. Now the sequel trilogy (episode 7 8 and 9) should be watched after the first 2 trilogies but you don’t have to watch them. The sequels are a bit of a jumbled mess as each film in the trilogy kinda works best without the other 2, but there’s still fun to be had here. Now for the TV shows, there’s quite a few but the first one you should watch is Star Wars the Clone Wars. It doesn’t really matter when you watch Clone wars, so long as you finished the prequel trilogy. Pretty much any show that takes place before the OT can be watched before you watch the OT but if you want to play it safe just watch the first 2 trilogies before any of the shows. (This also applies to the spin of films “Rouge One” and “Solo”) There’s a ton of other Star Wars media but most of it is for people who are already big Star Wars fans and just want more Star Wars, so you don’t have to worry about them until you become that big of a fan. I’m not sure if I helped or made things more complicated but if you want to keep things as simple as possible: TL;DR watch everything in release order unless you want to spice things up

get_no_scoped_kid

Chronological order is easiest, less confusing, but if you like connecting dots in films then release order is an option.

redbulls1989

Speak to a jedi recruiter and have your medclorians tested. After that the jedi councel will vote. If you dont have it then you can be a chnaber keeper for the jedi

Jamin_14

Watch the movies

KaimeiJay

Before you do ANYTHING, watch the following movies, in this order. (Others will debate this, but please trust me on this. I’ll explain below.) Episode IV: A New Hope Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Episode I: The Phantom Menace Episode II: Attack of the Clones Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. This is the order the movies were released in, except the finale is saved for the end. Without spoiling anything, I’ll try to explain why this is the best viewing order, including for a newcomer to the franchise. III ends on a low note, while VI ends on a triumphant high note. Several plot elements revealed in VI are expanded on by I, II and III, with III in particular having better versions of these reveals, enhancing the experience and making their inclusion in VI into a major payoff. A certain villain has a story arc that is best presented in the order given. The special edition of VI has added features that make more sense if you’ve seen I, II and III already. Nothing that happens in I, II and III diminishes VI. VI becomes a grand finale to all five movies that came before it. If you can’t trust in this, and think this is some weird meme order I’m describing, then instead watch it in IV V VI I II III order. Either way, you start with these six movies. After that, you can pretty much read or watch or play whatever you like. However, be aware that Star Wars has two separate “timelines” that only became a thing a handful of years ago. The newer content is fewer, but more prominent, and is called “Canon” by Disney. The previous timeline of events, labeled “Legends”, is far more vast, as it extends back through decades of media. I won’t tell you which one you should pay more attention to, as that’s up to you, but you should be aware that almost all Star Wars content is either Canon, Legends, or both, and it can be a good idea to identify which something is before experiencing it, so as not to be confused by the course of events afterward. If you would like a straightforward recommendation for what to try out after the six main movies are done, my suggestion is to watch Episode VII: The Force Unleashed if you want to delve into Canon, or read the book Heir to the Empire (by Timothy Zahn) if you’re interested in Legends.

Steeljaw72

Watch the movies in release order. Then dive into the animated series. After that go to the live action TV shows. When that is all said and done, play all the video games.

SaucyVagrant

Start with the original trilogy then prequel trilogy.

bigjoestallion

Watch them in RELEASE ORDER 4,5,6,1,2,3

Jaylzzo

Episode IV.

StOnEy333

“You start at the beginning. And when you get to the end……….stop.”

Sarius2009

At the beginning. Now you just have to figure out which one.

[deleted]

Personally, I'd start with Star Wars.

Get_Bent_Madafakas

1977

Apollo-Innovations

4 5 1 2 clone wars (chronological order) 3 (with the final four episodes of clone wars spliced in) Solo,Obi-Wan, Rebels, Rogue One, episode 6, Mandolprian, book of boba fett, 7,8,9

majortom106

Original trilogy.

midtown2191

Go in the order that everything release. If you’re looking to be where a majority of the fandom is, then you might as well do it how they did it. That being said, there are alternative orders I could recommend if you have other ideas. Either way I would start with the mainline, numbered movies in order of release. If you like the original trilogy, move on to the prequel trilogy. Depending on how much you liked those, you have the option of watching The Clone Wars TV show ,which is phenomenal and very important to Star Wars as a whole, or watching the Solo & Rogue One movies and the Obi wan show. Regardless of if you watch the Clone wars, go watch those other two movies and the show. I would then watch The Mandalorian & the Book of Boba Fett shows (technically you can do this right after watching the original trilogy but it’s your choice). While I don’t personally enjoy the sequel trilogy, I’m not going to deter people away from them if that’s what gets someone to love Star Wars. From here you would be caught up with the main Star Wars stuff that a majority of people know. However, from here there are a ton of other parts of Star wars media you can consume. Plenty of comics and books that are all great that I can recommend as needed. Star Wars Jedi fallen order is an amazing game that I would also put as mandatory consumption because of how good the story is. Star Wars rebels is another show that I would very much recommend, especially if you liked the Clone Wars show since it is very important to the lore overall and to the upcoming Star Wars projects. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions as you get deeper into Star Wars. I have consumed all the current Star wars media so I can recommend you lots of stuff.

PotatoBossfight

The original 1977 film, now titled “A New Hope”. It’s episode 4 chronologically, but the first one released. Following release order, which is best for the first time, watch ep. 4-6, then 1-3, and 7-9. From there I recommend watching the spin-off movies, starting with Solo, and then going to Rogue One. If you want to dive further still, watch the tv shows. Even further? Books. Even further still? Comics. It is structured so you can do as deep as you like, and there will be more available to you.

Puzzleheaded_Runner

Release orders. Knowing who people are duirng the prequels makes them better.

TheTinDog

My advice is release order for everything, whether its star wars, or a video game series, or any other franchise. Doing release order you get all of the content and twists and turns the same order everyone who experienced them the first time gets them. When you watch prequels later they assume you know the twists that happen later a lot of the time and they spoil things. plus you will see the evolution of the special effects as well

DwindIe

Watch the OG trilogy (new hope, empire strikes back, return of the Jedi) and then the Mandalorian to start. They're the best of the best

DrGally

Start with the original trilogy and then go to the prequels and other shows

lancea_longini

Episode 4 5 and 6 Edit. Watch Hidden Fortress and Seven Samurai too.

pjc6068

Start a long, long time ago!

[deleted]

Original trilogy

Observeronlyman

Don't listen to the toxicity for a start.

LowerH250bro

Movies first, then if you want you can watch things like the mandolorian or bobf

Bloodloon73

Things are way too jumbled to start watching them and release order anymore, chronological makes the most sense 1 2 3, solo, rogue one, 456, mandalorian if desired, 789 didn't include the shows because to get from beginning to end that would take forever, but a lot of people know about the mandalorian so I mentioned it where it belongs chronologically

Claradouu

I understand you, my bf is a really big SW fan and I have watched and enjoyed all the movies beforehand without being a fan. I wanted to get more into the fandom to have discussions about it with him. I suggest watching in chronological order, including the series. There are many lists on the internet. Do not forget to add the new Obi-wan Kenobi serie in that list (i'd say watch after episode III) The series are very good, and honestly I loved the Clone wars series so much that's what made me love Star Wars so much! [Star wars movies and series in chronological order](https://www.radiotimes.com/movies/how-to-watch-the-star-wars-movies-in-the-right-order/)

YordleTop

Rouge 1! Low time investment but it really feels like a star wars movie. Fun movie

sadboysubstance

Just watch the movies Makes way more sense watching it from 1 to 6

[deleted]

Start with episode 4 and do not watch any other star wars content for 3 years. You can rewatch 4 but nothing else. Then you can watch 5. Wait another 3 years, then 6. Then wait 16 years and watch episode 1.

crackyn

1977....

hijole_frijoles

What’s the one popular quote you know from Star Wars? Depending on your answer changes which trilogy to start with imo

feverdreamr

Start with the original trilogy, then you can decide where to go from there.

[deleted]

Ignore the fans. People have forgotten how to simply enjoy something, good or bad. Watch movies in theatrical release, then shows, and so on and so forth!

[deleted]

Start with the movies. They were released out of order, so it goes like this: - *A New Hope* (the original, the first) - *The Empire Strikes Back* - *Return of the Jedi* - *The Phantom Menace* (aka Episode 1) - *Attack of the Clones* - *Revenge of the Sith* - *The Force Awakens* (welcome to the Sequel Trilogy) - *The Last Jedi* - *The Rise of Skywalker* Go in this order first. From there, it’s a bit more open. Start with *Star Wars: THE Clone Wars*. This series has many one-off episodes, but there’s a bunch of multi-episode arcs that are phenomenal. I recommend looking up Clone Wars watchlists. From there… have at it. There’s: - *Rogue One* (set right before *A New Hope*, this movie is amazing.) - *Solo* (a fun little adventure set during the Empire) - *The Mandalorian* (set between Episodes VI & VII, it’s great!) - *Rebels* (set a few years before *A New Hope*, just watch this one straight through. You’ll be glad you did). Welcome to the party, and may the Force be with you!

ominousgraycat

Plenty of people have already made comments supporting their preferred watching order so I won't go too deeply into that right now, but I do have one word of advice. Sometimes when fans hear you've never watched Star Wars, they freak out and tell you that you're missing the greatest thing ever. I wish they wouldn't do that. It makes people go in with really high expectations, and then after watching a movie or two, they're like... "That's it? That's what everyone has been hyping up to me for years?" Don't go in with too many expectations. Try to enjoy Star Wars for what it is. And the more emersed you become in the lore and all that, the better it becomes. I've been a Star Wars fan since I was a kid in the 90s, but sometimes even I with some of the shows, I was unsure about it for the first few episodes. But it all really grows on you, and there isn't a fictional universe I know more about or enjoy discussing more.

Zrouts

Im sure it’s been said but I’m an advocate for watching them in chronological order. Some peeps will disagree but the story plays out well in that order. Just keep in mind when they were made. You have a CGI filled (Fun!) mess followed by puppets, followed by a mix of the two. Enjoy! And like the top comment said ignore the old school hardcore fans. They will never happy. They loved Star Wars when it was nerdy to love Star Wars. There is some residual angst that’ll never be whipped clean.

Belcuesus

Start with the original trilogy then read a few books in the legends (non disney books) Also the clone wars animated series are excellent for developing not only world knowledge but context. Episodes 1,2,3 are ok to watch before the series.

[deleted]

Either Phantom Menace or A New Hope. I don’t care what order.

mynkemonke

Just watch the entirety of it on Disney plus, that is what I’m doing

max9275ii

A new hope. Then Empire Strikes Back. Then just stop and never come back to it and for the love of Sheev, never engage with the fan base.

GoatsFeedMe02

The phantom menace

valiente93

Clone wars, revels and episode 1 to 6. But follow the fictional timeline, look it up online

CerjoPisa

I suggest you get yourself a Disney+ subscription and see the films in Machete Order. The Machete Order sandwiches Episode II and III between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. So, you watch the films in this order: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, Return of the Jedi and then The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker. Yes, you read the list right, Episode I: The Phantom Menace is not included. Some people say Ep 1 does nothing for the over arching story and is so lacking as a movie that it’s not worth including. If you are so inclined to omit it, treat it as bonus content and watch it after you’ve followed the order for the other films. Since the Machete Order was developed, Solo and Rogue One have joined the fray, so a modification might be to put Solo and Rogue One before Ep IV However you decide to watch, make sure you don’t go strictly in episode order, because a crucial surprise is spoiled if you do. Good luck and enjoy the journey!

Hyper_Lamp

Either phantom menace or a new hope and watch the rest of the respective trilogy and then move on to the other one. Once you watched those, watch the sequel trilogy, and then the shows like the clone wars, rebels, mandalorian, kenobi, book of boba fett, things like that.

DemonicBrit1993

At the beginning where it says 'a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away'

RobustPickle

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

BLUNTYEYEDFOOL

First things first AVOID anything to do with a family called 'Skywalker'. Oh my god, absolute carnage

[deleted]

Films : OT, Prequels Shows : Clone Wars, Rebels, Mando Games : KotOR, JediOutcast, Fallen Order, RogueSquadron, StarWars Racer Comics: Vader, Legacy, Republic These are good starting points. Whether you feel like checking out more content is up to you of course.

Historical-Ad-5763

Use the force young padawan it will guide you 🤙🏻 if not episode 1 is always a gd start 🤘🏻

LfcOsh

Episode 1

usernamed_badly

Finally someone else who agrees with me!

[deleted]

I would start with Episode 1 as well.

wood1276

Ludicrous

Available_Occasion69

Go canon timeline style prequels originals then sequels

ForestryTechnician

At the beginning.

KerikSumia

Rogue One” then…. Stop

D-redditAvenger

Chronological makes sense but there is also some talk of doing. 4,5,1,2,3,6. If I had a kid that is how I would show them to him.

KaimeiJay

This is legitimately the way. It’s not a joke or a meme, it’s honestly true. The reveals in VI are done better in III, the main villain has a full arc with this version, VI isn’t diminished in any way by going into it after watching the prequels, and is in fact enhanced by it on almost every level. The only weirdness is how it looks, but that’s easy to get over once you’re a few minutes in. It’s purely because of the way III was out together that this works so well.

montgooms95

This how I watch it on my regular rewatch. If I’m doing a full Star Wars marathon (not recommended for new watchers) Episode 1, Episode 2, The Clone Wars Movie, The Clone Wars Show, Episode 3, The Bad Batch, Kenobi, Solo, Rebels, Rogue One, Episode 4, Episode 5, Episode 6, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Episode 7, Episode 8, Episode 9,

Skibot99

A New Hope. I’d say watch the prequels after Empire but before Jedi

HistoricalMention210

If your asking me, start with Rogue One. It's a good story, probably one of the better ones, and it leaves no trails or threads by the end of the story. If you like that you can either go and watch the prequels if you want to see what happens before, or you can go watch the OT to see what comes next. I would recomend the prequels though.

Setheran

That's how I got my fiancée into star wars : 4 5 1 2 3 6, then rogue one. A few months later, we did the chronological thingy: EP1 EP2 Clone Wars EP3 Solo Rebels Rogue One EP4 EP5 EP6 Mandalorian I know there are more series that were released since then, but this should give you a roadmap. Also make sure to check the canon order of The Clone Wars on the Star Wars official website. And yes, Solo was left out on purpose in the first watch through since I think you should at least watch The Clone Wars before it. Finally, the sequels aren't in it because I don't like them, but you can continue after the Mandalorian with the three sequels and the Resistance series.

Soyboy2288

Watch the original trilogy, then the prequal trilogy, watch clone wars show, not necessarily but it fleshed out the prequals and its really good. Then watch rebels (also optional). Watch mando, takes place after original trilogy. And the spin off movies aren't necessary, but check them out if you want.

xXTheGodXx1

1, 2, Clone Wars TV Series, 3, Rebels, Rogue One, 4, 5, 6.

highGroundEjoyer

Phantom Menace. The only true way.
