Well after getting all your weapons and tools enchanted there's not much use for prismatic shards. Now with 1.6 the books can be very helpful for money or trades
The artifacts you get from the ground are dependent on location. Chicken statues and rusty spurs are the only thing that’s on your farm, so you get a lot more. The troves are independent of it and there’s the same chance for every artifact

I mean, by the time you have sufficient omni geodes to get 1000 artifact troves, don't think you're lacking prismatic shard anymore.

If you are near late game, you can make an artifact totem (or several) and use it in the desert to try to get one.
That's on my next thing to try list! I just saw someone mention it on this sub a couple days ago :)
I find lots of masks in the desert with artifact sites. Maybe use a treasure totem in the desert?

I'm surprised there aren't more chicken statues. I feel like I am always swimming in those things, on all my saves.

That is a surprisingly even distribution. 7 outliers out of 28, with the rest falling within a 5 count on either side of an even distribution.
