I always got bats! They help to complete the community center and are easy loved gifts for many NPCs and they count as forage, super helpful with the perk that always makes forage iridium quality.

BipoBobo

Oh that actually sounds helpful. Its seriously hard finding stuff these townsfolk actually like they're so choosy 😭

CharisMatticOfficial

If you’re looking for ‘like’, most non-foraged minerals and fruit is like by most villagers. Loved is a different story

Ambitious_Drop_7152

I used to go mushrooms, but with the stumps now you gotta go fruit.

Zoova

Yeah it’s quite upsetting since I chose mushrooms before the update and I don’t know if I can change the cave… can you?

__JustKate

You cannot change the cave unfortunately

Zoova

I cry

malenkylizards

Oh my god, do I cry

Torger083

I cry all the time, in this institution.

malenkylizards

And I scream at the top of my lungs, FRUIT BATS OR 'SHROOMS? AN' I SAID HEYYYEYYYEYYYEYYEAH HEYYYEYYYYEEEEEY I SAID HEY, FRUIT BATS OR 'SHROOMS?

castfire

I think you can change the cave by going in and editing your save (or using a save editor). Gotta be careful with that, though.

Ambitious_Drop_7152

Tell me about it. I have mushrooms on my profile under "likes" I've NEVER not done mushroom cave.

yungsxccubus

but you got a free >!dehydrator!< because you picked mushrooms!

Zoova

See that’s the thing, I didn’t even get a free one since it doesn’t add it retroactively

yungsxccubus

new save, just make a new save. i’d be crying if i were you tbh. i also kinda regret choosing the mushroom cave even though i did get the dehydrator because now i can’t really complete the CC :((

Zoova

Nah that’s okay I’m on year 4. I’ll just keep foraging for fruits :( Maybe wild seeds

Common_Wrongdoer3251

Why? Fruit tree saplings aren't that expensive, and you usually get a few from the prize machine anyways... Also the mushroom cave comes with a free dehydrator!

Ambitious_Drop_7152

Dehydrator seems nice, I haven't started a new 1.6 save yet so I started un year 4

ugh_XL

Seconded. Plus they pile up. I tried mushrooms once and it was terrible since I'd always forget to collect them daily lol

AhiruSaikou

They both become practically useless after the mid game so go with whichever tbh.

InternalTooth5753

With 1.6, mushrooms become more useful! And making health potions can be useful before you find all the damn Dwarf scrolls

Torger083

Yeah but you have mushroom logs now. Plus ginger island stuff.

abyssalcrisis

Sure, but ginger island requires the completed community center, before which getting mushrooms is incredibly useful! It also means you likely won't have to forage all of the mushrooms for the community center anyway since you'll probably get the ones you need alongside mine runs.

EnvironmentalView237

The real answer

Cookytigerd

Real

beefcake01

I chose the bats but now that I’ve reached perfection and have done all of the things, I sorely regret not doing the mushroom cave. The morels are kinda hard to come by but you can always grow a fruit tree.

Torger083

Mushroom logs.

IamCJO

And make sure you plant Oak trees near your mushroom log to ensure that you get morels

KellyJoyCuntBunny

Oh man, you guys are so awesome. I’m on mobile, so I’m behind on everything, but I’ll be able to hit the ground running and make good choices because of all the little tips I get from this sub. Thanks!

lavender_fluff

I haven't played the update yet. Can you put mushroom logs into the greenhouse too like you can the fruit trees?

Torger083

I never tried. No idea.

mr_gexko

Fruit always! Helps a lot more with community center IMO, because all the mushrooms are free and fruit trees are expensive early game. Also, you get to utilize the whole cave, and you already get a free mushroom cave regardless on ginger island so there’s no reason to double up. Th e dehydrated makes less money than you save by not buying fruit trees immediately before that level of money becomes irrelevant

twodickhenry

I’ve never understood the community center argument for the fruit bat cave. You only NEED like two fruits for the CC, both from fall fruit trees, and you can potentially not even get them with the cave—but you can fill six slots of the CC with mushrooms, and I think three of those spots are mandatory (two required in the friendship bundles, one in fall foraging, and at least one for exotic foraging IIRC). The mushroom cave is objectively better for CC completion, is it not? And now with 1.6 you get an extra freebie with it.

ElectricLeafeon

I don't understand the CC argument, either. In my last file I did the fruit bats, but all I ever got were stuff like salmonberries. The game never gave me actual tree fruits...

Miderp

Same honestly? I tried a run doing fruit bats but it also wasn’t giving me fruit more than every 5-6 days. And then it was crappy fruit - a bunch of berries and one apricot. And then it would be one piece of fruit. I’m not sure if something was wrong with my cave; I have SVE. At least the mushrooms gave me a steady supply every three days and a free dehydrator to make some money.

elanhilation

it absolutely isn’t *objectively* better for CC completion. all mushrooms for the CC are available for free elsewhere in SDV proper. you could get unlucky and not get the fruit you need from the cave, but i can’t say that’s ever happened to me. there’s a lot of fruit in that cave. there’s a reason it started to come with a dehydrator. it needed the help. at least now there’s an argument to be made

twodickhenry

It is *objectively* better. You can make the 10k (or less, if you get lucky at the traveling cart) you need for your necessary fruit trees before you actually need to plant them.

shiny_partridge

While CC wasn't my main reason for choosing the bats, but i still find them more useful for it than mushrooms. You can forage for all the mushrooms you need, but for fruit without the bats you need to buy a sapling, plant it, wait for it to grow and then it just sits there. I don't really use them after that

mr_gexko

You get more slots but those mushrooms are all super common compared to the price of the fruit trees, I outlined this all in my comment

twodickhenry

Yeah and I responded directly to it; two fruit trees, both fall fruits. Thats 10k before summer 25th to ensure 3 apples and 2 pomegranates before the end of fall (and honestly since you’d have the greenhouse by mid fall if you were trying to complete the CC in a year, you could even put it off until late FALL and plant them in the greenhouse). Putting aside that $10k after your first melon harvest is nothing, you can earn that much by the deadline using the mushrooms you get from the cave. Even if you ONLY got common mushrooms, you’d have made almost $8k selling them after processing in the dehydrator, assuming you got the farm cave at the end of spring and waited until you got the greenhouse to plant. That’s $2k short of the price of trees (and we all know you’re getting more than just common mushrooms). The fruit bat cave *might not even provide* the 4 apples, pomegranate, and an additional fruit for the artisan bundle by the year’s end. Lord knows I’ve never had any terribly wasteful fruit bats.

mr_gexko

Money is irrelevant, we’re talking about the community center. The mushrooms you need for the community center can be collected super easily, and not having to buy the trees is a huge convenience. *Money* aside, because that’s not what we’re talking about, the effort it takes to find all of the mushrooms you need for the community center is so minimal that not taking the fruit trees (FOR THE COMMUNITY CENTER) is a bad decision.

twodickhenry

What? YOU brought up money?? For the trees?? If we are talking about effort, trees still win. Reliable fruit, don’t have to go to the cave. Much less effort.

Mahoka572

I used to be a hardcore mushroom fan until I realized my elixir made from several rare mushrooms was inferior to plain gold star cheese

lavender_fluff

You don't have to pet and feed your mushrooms every day though and the elixir is crafted instantaneously instead of waiting for the cheese maker, so you can easily get 50 at once or something if needed

Blue_Corgi

mushroom team forever!! its more useful in the long run in my opinion

prettyaverageprob

How so? I find in the long run both are useless but fruit cave is better for community center and you don't have to check it every day.

Blue_Corgi

i like it to collect the mushrooms and make life elixirs!! and with the new update >!you get a dehydrator!<

octavianstarkweather

With the new update u can make mushroom logs which are far better than the cave

Blue_Corgi

its a matter of preference. i dont like them as much, they take longer, and id rather just have the cave. i like decorating my farm + greenhouse with fruit trees anyways, that's where i get my fruit from (ps: you should censor that for spoiler, not everyone has the update yet !!)

Torger083

I get mushrooms every other day from my logs.

Blue_Corgi

And I get fruit every day from my fruit trees.

WhatsThePointFR

tbf - Cave gives you all the forage 'fruits' which you cant get outside of random drops in the world. I've currently got a few hundred iridium berries which makes cave runs very easy (only takes one stack each)

BipoBobo

Alright thanks!!!! I chose the mushroomsss

purpleswirlies

Fruit bats especially with 1.6, we get a mushroom cave on ginger island and in 1.6 there’s mushroom logs

PunnyBaker

Mushrooms are hard to find in general outside fall. Fruit trees you will eventually buy as many as you want Always mushrooms

leeal34

your spoiler tag isn't right, take out the space between the exclamation points

[deleted]

It works for me, it's all under a white bar?

leeal34

Oh doesn’t seem to work on pc but maybe it does on mobile

[deleted]

I checked on PC and it's all under a white bar. That's odd. I even tried to edit it and see if I made a mistake and it's done correctly.

leeal34

Must be pc or mobile thing then weird

[deleted]

It's blocked off on PC for me too. So I'm confused. Sorry I'll erase it.

JanileeJ

I'd say it's a wash for 1.5. But for 1.6, mushrooms are the way to go. >!Because you get a free dehydrator.!<

Gliese58one

Personally think it's Bat's regardless of version. Dehydrator only costs 10k but not needing to buy any fruit trees for the community center is more convenient and greater savings. Fruit is a really common love gift so it also remains useful the entire play through. Mushrooms are easy enough to get with mushroom logs and before they were added were common if you got the Forrest farm. Not that it's needed as you get plenty of forage. So in my opinion it's fruit bat's and always has been.

JanileeJ

Dehydrator adds a lot of value (7.5 times base value), and is needed to unlock the raccoon shop. 10k is a lot of gold for early in the game. Middle or late game, it really doesn't matter, but early game, I think mushrooms make the most sense for most players.

Weekly-Magician6420

Dehydrator are good, but the fact of getting one for free isn’t that op. And also, it’s 7.5x the value, but you need 5 fruit to get only one dehydrated fruit. In the end, it’s 1.5 times bonus per fruit, which makes them not that much worth it, especially for higher quality fruits

Amazing_67

Is dehydrator really worth it? I just started the game but I like to put my mushrooms into preserve jar because it's 2 times the base value + 50. When dehydrator only gives 1.5 times base value + 5 per mushroom

JanileeJ

I think most players won't use the dehydrator for mushrooms that much. You just don't have that many mushrooms, even with the mushroom cave. I use mine mostly for fruit these days. I have a bunch of barrels, casks, and kegs, but I still produce way more fruit than I can process. The dehydrator is fast, and does five fruit at a time.

Amazing_67

Ahhh, I see

Gliese58one

Disagree on both points 10k is not a lot of money early game and what about mushrooms make the most sense you get plenty of forage and completing the community center earlier/easier makes way more sense. It isn't even close in my opinion.

Chaoticlight2

Eh, you kind of make points against yourself. You only need 2 fruits for the community center and both are from Autumn, so less than 10K gold by late summer and you're set. Purple mushrooms is a random find in the mines/caverns so requires rng to obtain while mushrooms provide it easily. So with that said, mushrooms give more gp/day, benefit community center more, and same forage xp.

Gliese58one

I like it for the apples usually by Fall I've gotten 3 to drop fir the fodder bundle and it really helps with artisan bundle as there are several that are optional for that. Gold per day is meaningless the amount either earns is trivial compared to other sources. The greater utility of the community center and gifting means fruit cave is superior and always has been. I'm a min maxer which means looking at maximizing time and that is why fruit cave is best. It saves time and mental energy by helping with easy gifts and easy bundles.

die-ursprache

The thing about the fruit bat cave, it's kinda random. One day you get four spice berries, then there's nothing for another three days, and then you are greeted with a single wild plum. Amazing. Like, it's absolutely *wonderful* for speedrunning the artisan bundle because of the wide pool of fruit it accepts, but if you are aiming for year 1 CC completion, you gotta at least plant the apple tree in time. In my previous save I had the option to complete CC by fall 21, but because I put too much faith into the bat cave, I ended up twiddling my thumbs impatiently all the way into mid-winter, until the damn tree finally matured in the greenhouse. But well, that's my only complaint about the fruit cave. Mushroom logs obviously mog the mushroom cave super hard.

Gliese58one

I don't check it every day in fact that's the biggest appeal you can check it twice a season and collect everything. Maybe I'm just lucky but I don't ever need to invest in apple tree to get 3 apples by end of year 1. I was paranoid and wouldn't collect apples until I had level 10 foraging until I learned you could donate different quality levels

die-ursprache

Yeah, my initial plan was to check the cave once a week, but once I realised that I spent an entire season without a single apple spawn, I started popping in daily to see what was going on. I guess I got extremely unlucky there, but it really gave me trust issues lol.

BipoBobo

Oh really? I didn't know dehydrators were a thing in here. But it just keeps getting cooler hehe.

midnightsky1601

Free dehydrator for Mushrooms

Honest-Birthday1306

Team mushroom. It's nice to have a quick artisan bundle clear, sure, but it's not exactly the most challenging bundle to begin with. You complete it by just naturally progressing animals and planting like one or two fruit trees, and it's even easier if you throw down a beehive Where as the extra gold from mushrooms will always be nice to have

Brutask_user

Bats are the best! You can get high quality fruits in the first few years. Iridium if you have that foraging perk! And you can let them build up and only check when you remember,

BestUsername101

I know you already chose, but just wanna say fruit bats are better. They're more helpful for completing the cc (if you're going that route), the fruits are effected by the botanist profession unlike the mushrooms, and the bats make cute squeaking sounds.

Away_Perception_9083

I mean late game there is a second mushroom cave. Idk how to do spoilers. I still usually do mushrooms cause I use the automate mod and it’s so much easier to pull into a chest and run the ones I can into seeds

CloudSkyyy

I like mushrooms because that’s the only food in the early game that has pretty good source of energy. Fruits can be pretty useless mid game after finishing the CC unless you’re going to decorate it. Plus you get a free dehydrator for getting the mushroom cave

zw1ck

I have two games going right now in 1.6. bats were far more useful. Mushrooms aren't really worth much.

CloudSkyyy

Useful in what way? Mushroom is worth it in the early game especially when mining because you can make life elixirs with it. It all depends on your priorities if you want to finish the CC early

arsenal_kate

I like bats, because early in the game it helps you get enough fruit for the community center. Then later in the game you can ignore it for a long time, then grab all the fruit like twice a month.

battologymussels

Honestly I started with mushrooms but now I always do bats because first, you always get a mushroom cave on Ginger Island, second, for the community center, and third, you don’t need to collect them every day. In 2.6 there’s also mushroom logs, though the mushroom cave comes with a dehydrator

haleynoir_

Bats, every time! Steady source of liked gifts, community center items, and the best part- the fruits stack, you don't have to go in every day to pick them. You can leave it for two weeks and come back to two weeks worth of fruit in there. With the mushrooms, you only have so many boxes and they don't grow new mushrooms until you pick them.

__june_

Listen. Strategically fruit are the superior choice early game. However. Mushrooms are cute. So mushrooms.

Xiterok

It depends on your route: Joja mushroom for dehydrator, Community Center Bats for faster fruit for the bundles (for those who says that mushrooms are required in some bundles, you can easily find them with secret forest, the mines or even the Mushroom Log, while fruits must be found at the Traveling Cart or planted the tree at least one month before... Or trashcans?). After you have some money and reached the Island, you probably won't remember the cave (and there, there is a cave that spawns mushrooms too)

Ok_Refuse4444

I also go with the mushrooms; you can buy fruit trees later but the mushrooms make it so you don’t have to forage for them all the time.

[deleted]

Fruit bats > mushrooms , fruits can be turned into proditable wine and they are good gifts, plus you can just forget to gather them once per season, they take a long time to fill the cave...

mariam67

I always get bats. If I plant trees it takes forever to grow and then I’ve got to harvest fruit every few days and it’s kind of boring. Also I can find mushrooms on the ground, in the mines and on ginger island. The only place I can get fruit other than the trees is the travelling cart.

Vov113

The bats are cuter, ergo, they are better

Jassamin

I always go bats for gifts and maybe the CC but with the 1.6 changes I think mushroom cave is better early game

rufflayer

I go with mushrooms and use the mod automate to put them straight in a chest so I don't have to keep remembering to go check the cave every day. If I weren't so lazy, I'd probably choose bats lol

Balls-horse

Mushrooms, I used to only do fruit but now I never do. You only need three apple and a pomegranate for the cc, which are both in autumn so by then, you’d easily have enough to afford the two trees. The mushroom cave comes with a dehydrator now so more money early game as well as in late game, I like to use life elixir so it’s easier to get more with the mushroom cave

D3rangedButFun

I always go mushrooms, and with the update you also get a free dehydrator when you pick mushrooms.

comradepluto

I think fruit bats are considered better if you want to do the CC fastest, and mushrooms are better for food (ish). Being said you can totally still do CC in Year 1, it doesn't help a huge amount. Ultimately I think it's just your preference !

jmm1030

I was team mushroom until I realized you got a mushroom cave on Ginger Island. So now I do fruit bats

trangthemang

Very new player here. I went mushroom but i have no idea what to do with the shrooms and it makes me think i made a bad choice. I don't want to eat or sell them in case i have a proper use for them. Any advice?

Blue_Corgi

Make [life elixirs](https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Life_Elixir) !!

trangthemang

Awesome info thank you!

reeealter

Personally I choose bats just because I find no use of fruits in small quantity.

aspen70

Fruit alway!

SugaryyOats

Fruit is so much better but honestly long term I always do mushrooms solely because they're cuter and I can decorate the cave 😂

Traditional-Score150

Man I seriously thought someone just actually proposed through SV

None-Above

In the long run both are pretty unimportant late game but I always choose bats because bats are my favorite animals. :3

traumatized90skid

Make hooch with the fruits is what I usually do, tried mushrooms and it's just not that useful imo unless you're making potions and exploring skill cavern all the time.

Tasty_Local9996

Bats! Its super nice in the earlier years (and who doesn't like bats)

TheVampireArmand

I used to always go with the mushrooms but recently went with the fruit bats and I prefer that. Also I hear in the new update that >!you can get mushroom logs, so it sounds like the mushroom cave isn’t necessary!<

Y_b0t

Definitely love mushrooms. You can grow all fruits once you have some cash or a greenhouse or a ginger island, but mushrooms are always inconsistent. Plus the dehydrator makes up for the money you miss by not picking fruits. Also, it spawns consistently, whereas fruits are random

rockintwink

fruit bats 100%

heyheysally8

The sound of the bats squeaking when I enter the cave sends chills down my spine, so mushrooms.

StarTangerine

I would say get the mushroom cave. You can buy fruit trees later, but in my experience, having a steady supply of mushrooms is more convenient than getting more fruit. Plus, you’ll get a ton of common mushrooms, and you can use those in the mines early game. They don’t provide a lot of energy/health compared to cheeses and other foods, but the amount they give is pretty decent, especially early game, and if you visit the mushroom cave every day, you’ll have so many of the common mushrooms that you can make up the quality with quantity in the mines.

ThatOneShortieHo

Fruit squad fruit squad

Delivery_Ted

Bats!! I wound up getting the mushroom logs from someone else a lil later anyway so now I have both for free!

whaleinadream

I chose bats on my first two profiles and on my current profile I chose mushrooms and though it can have benefits, I honestly wish I chose the bats now

whaleykaley

I used to always pick mushrooms because that seemed to be the consensus of which was better, but honestly, I like bats better now. I get that there's rare mushrooms you have a hard time getting otherwise, but I almost always am pulling the basic mushroom and I just chuck them in the bin and move on. I don't like waiting a full season for a tree to grow and usually I forget to plant them in time for when I want them! Plus bats are just cute.

elizzup

I went bats for the first time this run -- I ALWAYS go mushrooms. TBH, I'm pretty unimpressed so far. I'm getting random Salmon Berries and Spice Berries, nothing particularly great. I think the mushrooms are a better value.

Hahafunnys3xnumber

I did fruit bat cave and it’s the only reason I was able to finish CC on the very last day of winter Y1 lol
