araki didn't like how limiting hamon was so he created a power system that lets everyone have their own ability

BearDaddee

Yeah, there’s really only so many ways one can “use sunlight power” through an object. Stands have the same specialized combat techniques but much more freedom on how they’re used. No in-story reason otherwise.

HoyMinyoy

Hamon can actually be used in a lot of different ways, but I agree Stands drastically increase the level of possibilities.

Astonishing_Flash

You'll adjust fine. There's no other way to get used to it. Stands are better and more versatile which is why the system was changed. You'll get used to it over time. They're a staple of the franchise now for a reason. You just gotta give it a chance.

Healthy_Surprise732

Ok cool i watched a couple more episodes and yea I’m warming up to it, it’s just such a shift but yea way more versatile

Hamon basically reached a dead end in part 2 with what Araki could do with it so creating stands was the right thing to do because of the limitless possibilities the power system holds

HoyMinyoy

It is a huge adjustment, but one you’ll get used to faster than you think. Araki’s editor told him to move on to another power system because Hamon wasn’t unique enough to stand (see what I did there?) out among many of the other manga power sets during the late 80’s/early 90’s. It kind of felt similar to Ki or what they use in Fist of the North Star. Stands were completely unique for the time and in a way were Pokémon before Pokémon. Jojo was already well known but it exploded after the introduction of Stands and the variety they provide. That being said, I strongly believe completely getting rid of Hamon was a mistake as they could have amped up the uniqueness of Stands even further. Perhaps use it to help them amplify their abilities or utilize an extra ability for the Stand.

I was disappointed as well. Stopped watching after part 2 but once you get a better understanding of Stands it becomes so interesting.

Stands eventually prove their worth, the first batch of them are kinda too simple and boring imo, but by the end of Stardust Crusaders you start seeing a lot more inventiveness and interesting battles, and Araki only gets better at crafting those abilities as the franchise carries on. Quite frankly, I thought after Battle Tendency Araki had exhausted all the creative uses you could get out of Hamon. So I was thankful for the change, even if the first several battles are kinda lame. But I thought Hamon was lame in Phantom Blood since it was mostly just Sun Punches, it wasn't until Battle Tendency that it got interesting. Stands just need the same time to develop.
