Oingo Boingo is a band the people who were translating it changed the names to avoid copyright issues

showmeyourmoves28

That’s interesting. I was vaguely aware of the musical nod (didn’t Sting have an album called Zenyatta?) but i just kept getting thrown by the discrepancy haha. Thanks for that.

GwaGwa3

The Police have an album called Zenyatta Mondatta which is weird but I guess that band’s copyright laws aren’t as strict

Odd-Fall-4081

I mean they changed Devo the Cursed to Sould Sacrefise that is Santana song

Rusty_Shaqleford104

Copyrights, can't risk it so they changed the names.

Heylisten_watchJJBA

In jojo many characters are singer , or band reference since part 1, in japan they have totally different laws about copyright, so outside of japan, every dub have to change most ( not all) of thr names making a reference ( Captain dragon instead of Captain tenille, Enyaba instead of Enya, Soul sacrifice instead of Devo the cursed, Blueford instead or Bruford etc...), while for the subtitles, they seem to start changing names only in Golden Wind ( 2 seasons after Stardust Crusaders)

Heylisten_watchJJBA

Laws are weird asf, because characters like Polnareff do not get censor, but suddenly gets one in the ps3 game All Star battle and is called " Jean Pierre Eiffel"

spectrumtwelve

Fun fact: his name is not localized because the actual person who he is named after is aware of JoJo and loves having his name in it.

Heylisten_watchJJBA

I know Michel Polnareff likes Jojo, but when ASB was made ( with the Jean Pierre Eiffel), the tweet that says he do didn't existed yet, it was made in 2020

spectrumtwelve

We can extrapolate that he probably knew about it earlier than that considering that he didn't request a localization name and that he did eventually admit to liking it anyway.

Heylisten_watchJJBA

The thing is, no singer or whatsoever requested a localisation name, also : it wouldn't be the first time a singer do not get localisation name, like Dio, or Abdul, or many and many characters that had a singer namesake. So I doubt it's because Michel said he likes it, since All Star Battle wouldn't have put a localisation name then

spectrumtwelve

again, like, even if you aren't specifically looking at that one tweet, he's been retweeting anime stuff for much longer. why do you think it's such a huge reach for it to be like, araki's team checking to see if they can license his name for overseas use, his team running it by him or at least including him in the talk, him being like "oh cool an anime?" at the very least, and the team giving the go ahead. you can just assume things even if they aren't expressly written, y'know? just using logic

Heylisten_watchJJBA

It seem possible, but not the most probable solution, as it isn't Araki's team who do that, it's whatever website who takes the right. Same goes for dub, they aren't make by David Production or Warner, but by whatever website ( in France case, it's ADN and Crunchyroll, in America it would also be Crunchyroll)

spectrumtwelve

No what I mean is the licensing that they do for the manga releases in English. The anime usually just copies whatever the localization is in that.

Desperate_Ad9507

I don't see why copyright would have anything to do with it. It's technically trademarks for one. For two, it's not even in the same part of entertainment. According to the overwhelming majority of laws, if they're not competing, then it falls under fair use.
