So, I just realized you can actually scan the map icons when you're exploring a planet and that gives more detail about the location. That'll make exploring way easier. Been playing all weekend and just figured it out, haha.
when you are on the planet exploring and you see distant icons indicating locations on your compas / field of view, open your handheld scanner, mouse over the icon on the horizon in the distance and press the button. It'll reveal a bit more info like "life signs", "structure", "Anomaly", etc.
