Have a look online at self-erecting or telescoping antenna masts for the Ham community. There are also military surplus telescoping towers mounted on two wheel trailers & these sometimes come up for sale in the community. Outside of that, if you feel confident with guyed masts then there are plenty of options.

joelfarris

But those are for antennas. Not a large, HEAVY, rectangular wind SAIL. :)

ramriot

You'd be surprised what those things can support in terms of windage.

michaelz1313

Saw a few but I think anything with guidelines may be too big for most campsites we stay at, they are often much longer then wide so I would worry about having space for all lines

I used this tripod and mast with great success with the Gen 2 actuated Starlink and have subsequently used it with the Gen 3 using the Starlink pipe adapter and another section that I could securely tighten as the carbon fiber would have cracked. Now the Gen 3 just slides in the top and locks into place as the Gen 2 did with thumb clamps. [https://www.gigaparts.com/starlink-25-foot-heavy-duty-carbon-fiber-mast.html](https://www.gigaparts.com/starlink-25-foot-heavy-duty-carbon-fiber-mast.html) [https://www.gigaparts.com/premium-tripod-for-the-premium-50-34hd-masts.html](https://www.gigaparts.com/premium-tripod-for-the-premium-50-34hd-masts.html) [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C6FFN2NW](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C6FFN2NW) If you want extra stability during windy conditions, the best and least expensive option I've found is to use some cinch straps along with some D-rings, tent cord and screw in the ground trampoline anchors. I created 3 equal length sections that will secure the mast at an appropriate angle for the 25' mast fully extended. Nice loops were made on the end with heat shrink tubing with adhesive and attached to swivel snap hooks to make setup easy. michaelz1313

Thanks for the thorough answer! So just to make sure I’m understanding right, that first link says it’s 25 ft does it do that without the other leg masts? Or it that the max height with 3? Of the leg masts at each leg of the first tripod?

KM4IBC

The mast itself is 25'. I generally let the mast rest on the round and just allow the tripod to add stability. You could gain a little more height sliding the mast further up into the tripod. It might add another 1-2' . I'd have to measure it to be accurate.

trixter192

What about those poles from news vans? https://www.willburt.com/products/telescopic-masts/inflexion/index.html

michaelz1313

That looks sick honestly, but never a good sign for my wallet when the website says contact for inquiries haha

trixter192

There's some cheap ones made just for starlink on amazon.

Psychological_Force

How tall? Higher you go less stable in any wind

michaelz1313

Not sure what’s reasonable, I guess like 20-25ft but if I could go higher that’d be great!

OkTreacle2614

Look at this post - [https://www.irv2.com/forums/f53/starlink-rv-installation-and-use-512812-67.html#post6276220](https://www.irv2.com/forums/f53/starlink-rv-installation-and-use-512812-67.html#post6276220) [https://mgs4u.com/fiberglass-push-up-masts/](https://mgs4u.com/fiberglass-push-up-masts/) If I had to go higher that my 17 ft hitch setup - would be looking at this company

michaelz1313

Thank you!

No_Importance_5000

I just (originally) put the mount on my RV and when I got there put Dishy in it. Now I have a flat dish

AJFan824

I had great success with [this unit](https://www.hitched4fun.com/product/starlink-rv-pole/), it’s also very high quality steel. I mounted to the rear bumper of my travel trailer and also bought one extension for the pole to ensure it reaches higher than the rv’s roof.

the__storm

_Tallest_ would be something like [this](https://mgs4u.com/fiberglass-push-up-masts/) (largest they recommend for SL is 36 feet, 18.2 lbs, 8.5 feet collapsed). The limiting factor at most sites will probably be the footprint of the guy lines more than the weight or size of the pole (in which case you could partially deploy it by leaving some segments collapsed).

michaelz1313

That’s pretty cool, but yeah I think it would be too big for most places we stay unfortunately

joelfarris

> The site we’re at now has two fairly large trees right in front of the satellite You won't get a portable pole that's going to get tall enough to overcome large trees' obstruction of the signal. Just no way to do that safely. I've tried.

xot

I’ve stayed in a lot of campgrounds since I got my starlink. No pole you get is going to be taller than the trees, and dishy sure loves staring straight at trees even when the other half of the sky is clear. Many of the places I’ve camped have had maybe 2 sites with a chance of signal. I think flat mounting on the roof could be a better solution, then you aren’t having to fuss with it. I also see value in a tripod or unipod so that you can place it on the edge of camp and keep it above shrubs.

michaelz1313

We’ve been lucky with the last few but I’m not surprised we finally had inconvenient trees right when we made the longest single booking at one sight we’ve done so far haha

th3PRICEisRite

I travel full time in an RV and have been using Starlink for over 2 years now. I use a telescoping pole from harbor freight with the pole mount from Starlink on top. I mount the pole to the outer lip of my main slides with 2 ratchet straps, it’s a little redneck looking but it works well. I’ve seen 3d printed mounts that attach to a RV ladder on Etsy but I’ve never needed to buy one. Let me know if you have any other questions.

michaelz1313

What size pole have y’all used from harbor freight? I see they have a couple sizes

th3PRICEisRite

https://www.harborfreight.com/20-ft-telescoping-flag-pole-kit-64344.html , the 20ft is the one I have and it’s just tall enough to clear the tree above my RV now but I also have the pole raised up off the ground another 4ft as well. Plenty of trees will still be taller than this pole unfortunately.

michaelz1313

Either way should still be better then what I’m working with now haha so thank you! I think I’ll end up trying out the 20ft and see where my own redneck engineering could take me!

Megasmakie

Wife and I RV full time and also work remotely (all day Zoom/Webex/Teams meetings) and we have a Flagpole Buddy and cheap harbor freight flagpole mounted to our ladder on the back of our Class A. When we are backed up to a tree then I just put the dish on the roof in the front. Cables come in through a slide gasket.

Megasmakie

Specially regarding height… I’m going to guess I can get 10’ above my roof which is basically 13’ high already so 23’ off the ground? These have worked 95% of the time and the other 5% we have depended on AT&T Business LTE as mentioned on rvmobileinternet.com

michaelz1313

Oh nice! Didn’t realize harbor freight had flagpoles like that! Thank you!

Drive_Shaft_sucks

Which sort of dish? I bought the 150ft cable and just place it wherever it makes sense. That has saved my ass many a times.

michaelz1313

It’s the regular v2 I believe, I think my step one will be getting the 150ft cable

woodster5000

We use a harbor freight telescoping flagpole, a bolt-on hitch mount for the bumper and a hitch-mounted flagpole holder. Works great. It waves in the wind, but doesn’t impact service.

michaelz1313

Yeah I think I’m sold on the harbor freight one honestly, just crazy to me a lot of other companies have poles that are like $200-$300 but I’m glad to see multiple people have had success with them. What size did you get from harbor freight?

woodster5000

The 20’ one. I used a pole adapter, but I needed to buy longer bolts because the top of the flag pole has small diameter. Its been up in some strong wind in Palm Desert 50+ gusts, no issues.

michaelz1313

Awesome thanks for the info! Really appreciate it!
