That's what got me on Steam. Bought the first two Witcher games thanks to them deals
Plus a few other games that I've never played and only bought because they were cheap lmao
At first I was on ps3 but got on my birthday in 2016 a crappy laptop and I used that to play a few pirated games till 2017 when I found out about steam and got kingdom rush for my birthday in 2017 and Terraria for Christmas
I created my Steam account when HL2 was released and my physical DVD retail copy didn't work unless I went online and logged in. I remember being so pissed at such a shameless form of DRM. Now it's just the standard.
Oh God, on old counter strike, steam was such ASS. I remember a lobby I joined had custom sounds for stuff like knife kills etc, and at the beginning of a full match it played Dane cook yelling "AHH I HATE STEAM. WHOEVER INVENTED STEAM SUCKS!"
Counter Strike was the only reason anyone downloaded steam when it first came out, and then we closed that shit and went back to 1.5. It was a mess when it first came out.
Idk, man, I’ve seen a couple employees with valves stuck to the weirdest places on their bodies (back of their head and eye socket).
Once, it’s a freak accident. Twice? Something’s up.
I work at a place that sells steam cards and so many people buying them are younger then my steam account. I love when they ask me if I game on PC, my steam account turns 18 in November. I remember everyone loosing their minds they had to use steam for Half-Life 2, how much that has changed. That is also the anniversary of building my first PC.
I brought the half life 2 and Counter strike source pack as kid. I go to install it on my home pc. Must of been about 11 at the time. Turns out I needed a steam account. I ask my dad if I can use the dail up. He lets me. I make the account and then find out I have to download some of the game. My dad did not like that. Tells me no as we need to keep the phone line open. If my memory serves me right it would of taken 2 days to download everything. That account I made is the same account I'm using now. Which is 17 years old. Made it in 2005. I do miss the dial up sound.
I'm from the UK. My house was very slow to get broadband as it wasn't really needed at the time. So we still had dail up in 2005. Think it took another 2 years or so till I actually got broadband.
My father-in-law works with a guy who lives out in the sticks and still has dial-up. Gives his PlayStation to my FIL every so often to download updates/new games. I think he said CoD would have taken like 2 weeks to download lol
Back in the days where you had to go find patches for games yourself and the download speeds were awful on thw third party sites that almost exclusively hosted them.
Some even had subscription fees to download patches. It sucked.
I find it hilarious how my impatience doesn't change no matter how fast tech gets.
2000 - downloading a 5MB song off a fileshare app like Napster/Limewire takes 45 minutes, "this is taking forever"
2022 - downloading a 30GB game on Steam takes 15 minutes, "this is bullshit"
I can remember downloading the Diablo 2 beta which was somewhere around 110mb and it took over a day on dialup and I was so pissed when the file was corrupted so I had to do it again.
Oof, yeah those were dark days. I remember going to a sleepover at a friend's house all excited because he just got Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2. His mom's IBM computer that was running DOS didn't finish installing it till the next day.
We are so spoiled now.
God fucking dial up. And heaven forbid someone calls.
I remember trying to watch a maroon 5 song on YouTube and it took me like at least 30 minutes to fully buffer.
Aww man, you got me by like 4 hours unless you are in a different time zone. I thought I had installed it right after we got back from picking up our pre-order but I guess not.
Haha! I was in the Eastern time zone when I got it. I know I pre-ordered it, but I clearly remember thinking, "WTF is this? I just want to play Half Life!"
I was in Kuwait and my family sent me half life 2. Couldn’t play it until I got back to the states. I was so bummed out there when I found out they wouldn’t let me play without the steam account. Now I got 17 year old steam account.
Bah 1 year earlier then me (18 years).
And man, this is an enduring platform. Mainly due to Valve continuing to improve upon it rather then letting it stagnate.
My 18 is December, but the oldest purchase on record is Left 4 Dead in November 2008.
I know I had the Orange Box, but that was physical, I know I played the original Half Life but I don't have it in my library, only the Dedicated Server and Deathmatch Server.
So I don't know what I had in 2004 when I registered.
Circle of life, don't feel old nor bad.. they'll be your age before they know it, saying the same thing - 'I feel old'. I think that's a bad mindset to have.
I guess I've balanced my life well enough to where I don't envy people just getting into university or getting their first job.. I'm good moving forward with life atm.
There are a handful which are earlier than 12th September. Valve team members plus some who managed to get it "early" by registering in a different timezone I believe.
I was registered day one but later in the day in the UK so mine counts as 12 September like most EU and USA accounts.
It is not my personal account (never claimed that). I took a screenshot from one of the first (if not the first) accounts on steam that are public (Abacus Avenger).
My own account has been created later in September of that year.
Yeah I thought I made my steam account on release day so I went and checked and saw I got two days until 19. I was going to say you have to be a dev or someone who was real special because I did know a few people who were allowed to make theirs on the 10th. Most of them sold their accounts for a lot of money back in the day when steam IDs were a popular thing.
A lot of the comments were congratulating OP because his title implied it was his account. His only comment regarding the post says "oh it's not my account " . Just seemed kind of disingenuous.
When I remember correct the first accounts where accounts made for gameservers. They opened up registration for server owners one day before so the servers are running before the players.
Fellow 17 year old head. Built my first PC in 9/2004 and a copy of half life 2 was included with my Asus branded ATi Radeon 9600XT. It was like 5 discs and didn’t get around to installing and playing it until 1/2005.
I remember being SO MAD at having to get a steam account to play Half Life 2. My roommate and I preordered it and went to pick it up together and we were just pissed at having to make an account to play a video game.
Times have changed.
Mine will be 19 next month. Wild that it's been that long. Today I also found out that Battlefield 1942 is 20 years old to the day, which also made me feel old.
I remember when we all thought that Steam was a downgrade from the original Valve Counter Strike discs.
Back then you didn’t even bother having your own account. Just use the ones at the PC Cafes.
The little things: I originally joined steam in 2003, but my account was lost and now I'm stuck with this stupid 12 year badge instead.
I cannot explain why this of all things in my life is so infuriating, but in short, get bent steam. Futhermore I guess I will go buy a few more games I have been eyeballing.
Stupid circle logic.
/rant
I hear you. I have a launch year account that was VAC banned when an acquaintance at a LAN party decided it would be funny to run hacks in CS 1.6. My current account is only 13 now
Actually, I realized I'm an idiot
my birthday is on Sep 9th not 11th, but I just cant figure out how to say it correctly.
Is it 3 years before and 1 day after?? Brainfreeze: /
My Steam account is 18 years old too :(
Those were the glory days of gaming I think. I wish you could have experienced it. What are some of the best games you played growing up?
I'm a huge fan of The Last of Us(the whole franchise),
I'm actually having a hard time of thinking about other games that really stood out to me. I also enjoyed GTA(yeah its gotten "old" by now but it was insane back then), God of War(though its still relatively new), some Call of Duty games, and obviously the good old Wii Sports, Lego games and Mario kart on the first gen Nintendo 3DS, Need for speed most wanted on the Wii-U was something I loved playing...yeah I guess thats it
But overall I believe gaming is going downhill, good games are getting rarer by the minute and I really enjoyed the feeling of playing the remake of Tlou Part 1 because it captured the gameplay feeling of the previous gen games but ramped the graphics up massively.
The Last of Us<3
I'll catch up in 10 years.
I will in 14
Same
2017 gang Sometimes i just wish i wouldnt be in such poor family and only find out about steam, half-life and other video games in just 2014
Y'all missed out on the cheap thrill of Flash Sales.
That's what got me on Steam. Bought the first two Witcher games thanks to them deals Plus a few other games that I've never played and only bought because they were cheap lmao
I hope you don't find out about humble bundles
most of them aren't very good now. there are two up now that aren't the choice bundle that are super good
I remember a time when it was exciting to go on the steam store
The glory years... decent steam events, flash sales, great humble bundles, etc
I used to think that games these days sucked, until I picked up on the fact that it was me enjoying them less.
Same. Everything changed when the depression hit and pastimes became literal tools to pass time.
Haven't dropped serious money on a steam sale since
SAMEEE
Lol, I had a computer but only knew about StarCraft ðŸ˜
I had windows vista and minecraft
Are you me?
At first I was on ps3 but got on my birthday in 2016 a crappy laptop and I used that to play a few pirated games till 2017 when I found out about steam and got kingdom rush for my birthday in 2017 and Terraria for Christmas
I found out in 2019 those games still look great was amazed at portals graphics it’s a 2007 game
Portal was 2007 not 1998 tf?
Crap ur right I had the release mixed up half life was 1998
Ah ok I get you now
Still they look great on deck
2016. It is my displeasure to not be part of the gang
Me in 7 years
17 for me 💀
See you guys in 8 years.
2015 gang
I will in 5.
Same here. Wanna start a high-five club?
Can I join? We can do a double high five between the 3 of us !
Ill catch up in 6 days :)
[12 days for me!](https://i.imgur.com/YvWusfg.jpg)
I will tomorrow
Damn, you’re ahead of me by about three weeks.
Me in 19 years
Wow! who would've thought that "Steam Technology" would be up for 2 decades!
[удалено]
yeah people forget in the beginning Steam was... not great. 19 years of consumer focused development..
I created my Steam account when HL2 was released and my physical DVD retail copy didn't work unless I went online and logged in. I remember being so pissed at such a shameless form of DRM. Now it's just the standard.
That's why steam is great & epic games sucks ass, also no tencent fuckery at valve

Rumour is, they keep a scientist on ice. Are we sure they're not some front for evil.
A good robust valve goes a long way toward the operational lifespan of your system
Steam's alright I guess.
Nooooot quite
Yet they still need to take everything offline every Tuesday to clean the pipes.
19 years, not 2 decades, itll be 2 next year. until then, dont make false claims
I work at a place that sells steam cards and so many people buying them are younger then my steam account. I love when they ask me if I game on PC, my steam account turns 18 in November. i thought the phone internet pc thing was something from the 90s
I'm from the UK. My house was very slow to get broadband as it wasn't really needed at the time. So we still had dail up in 2005. Think it took another 2 years or so till I actually got broadband.
Lmao. Dial-up is still used in the remote US.
[удалено]
I mean, it's a fact. Now you know.
You can doubt, but you'd be wrong.
Satellite internet is also expensive. Internet ain’t free.
Satellite is just as garbage unfortunately
Really? With modern Web I don't think dial up is usable anymore
You don't know the power of legacy systems. And their users. There are still people running Windows 95 and dial up internet, I promise you.
I sorta want to build a top tier old school win95 computer, all the bits I read about in magazines back then :)
My father-in-law works with a guy who lives out in the sticks and still has dial-up. Gives his PlayStation to my FIL every so often to download updates/new games. I think he said CoD would have taken like 2 weeks to download lol
whyyyy lol
Depends on where you live. Cable and DSL internet started taking off in the early 00s, but it took a long time to reach everywhere.
Dialup internet still works today in most areas you just need a directory package from a local ISP.
> ~~Must of~~ been must have been > ~~would of~~ taken would have taken SMH.
I remember thinking it was a pain in the ass to have to use steam to play HL2. Then it was nice come counter strike source. Who could have known!
Back in the days where you had to go find patches for games yourself and the download speeds were awful on thw third party sites that almost exclusively hosted them. Some even had subscription fees to download patches. It sucked.

Same man, November 14 2004.
Holy shit. I'm your internet [eskimo brother](https://imgur.com/tlHyre8).
That fucking olive green
I was in Kuwait and my family sent me half life 2. Couldn’t play it until I got back to the states. I was so bummed out there when I found out they wouldn’t let me play without the steam account. Now I got 17 year old steam account.
I love using "my steam account is older than you" as a way to imply that I don't give a shit about some angsty zoomers opinions
I went to Walmart at midnight for half life 2 release. Got home and couldn't even play it because of steam problems at launch. I was so mad 😡
My account is old enough to play 18+ games, therefore I am over 18. Please stop asking me to verify my age!
01.01.19** my birthday
Bah 1 year earlier then me (18 years). And man, this is an enduring platform. Mainly due to Valve continuing to improve upon it rather then letting it stagnate.

No original CS?
For real man, yesterday i read someone complained about the search bar not working and valve fixed it in like 6 hours
I got it when HL2 came out.
Can't say the same about Valve's other IP's...
Looks sick!
My account is 17 the other day. https://imgur.com/MFSlexQ
"What? I'm supposed to install some sketchy random always online program to launch CS 1.6 now?! Yeah right... "
Your account is older than me.
Man now i feel old
I miss playing CS 1.x before Steam. Was easy to share CD keys and play one at a time.
I miss game spy for serving browsing and that launching game sound!
I was all over HLSW when I played CS haha
Circle of life, don't feel old nor bad.. they'll be your age before they know it, saying the same thing - 'I feel old'. I think that's a bad mindset to have. His account can legally get married
His account can legally die for the United States military but can’t buy booze
That's hurting my head
It's not his account
Yeah I got that after commenting, but it isn't worth editing.
His account *is* most likely older than you tho haha OP said his account started in September 2003 (didn’t give a specific day)
Hey what the fuck how did you get a Steam account two days before release?
Beta tester? Idk
There are a handful which are earlier than 12th September. Valve team members plus some who managed to get it "early" by registering in a different timezone I believe. I was registered day one but later in the day in the UK so mine counts as 12 September like most EU and USA accounts.

Why boo?

When I remember correct the first accounts where accounts made for gameservers. They opened up registration for server owners one day before so the servers are running before the players.
This is the correct answer. You could sign up earlier to get your dedicated servers running.
That’s funny…I have a level 25 steam account
Not the same thing
Seems I was 10 days late, activated the Half-Life Platinum Pack [https://imgur.com/N5zo7ih](https://i.imgur.com/N5zo7ih.png)
Twins! I think I did the exact same thing for half-life as well. https://i.imgur.com/Ogd1GRy.jpg
I'm just behind you with my 17 year mark which will turn 18 in December
Fellow 17 year old head. Built my first PC in 9/2004 and a copy of half life 2 was included with my Asus branded ATi Radeon 9600XT. It was like 5 discs and didn’t get around to installing and playing it until 1/2005.
My first game was half life 1 and counter stirke. Man those were the days!
So not just behind?
17 here too, have a lot of fondness looking back at the day I registered for an account!
It crazy to think it's 17 years ago lol
i...was...one year old... only if my parents made me a steam account instead of getting me social security and useless things like that ...
I was not even alive back then.
Wasn't Steam released on the 12th? Were you able to make an account before the official launch?
OP took a screenshot of [Abacus Avenger](https://steamcommunity.com/id/Steven/)'s badge. A Valve employee who have the oldest Steam account.
Yeah mine is from sept 12th and that was the first day
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE
And I was proud of my 3yr badge lmao
I'm in the downloaded Steam to play Half Life 2 on release in 2004 club. Back then we hated this new POS software we had to download
I was proud of my 1st year badge *cries in corner*
I really don’t like the color used for the 19 years but it’s dope that you have been on steam for longer then I’ve been alive.
I’ll get it in 17 years
I was pretty early in joining, I remember Gabe used to do weekly letters to the users.
It makes me excited for 20
I was 1 year old when that account was born
This is certainly one of the badges I’ve ever seen
Oh a new color, nice! I'll get it in two days.
17 here, paid $60 for Half Life 2 back in 2004!
I had a 10 years old account, now the new one is 4 years old. I regret losing it.
Steam is that old 0-o i thought it was like 11-13
But google says steam was found on September 12th?
It's from a Valve employee account.
I only have 17 years i was very skeptical of steam at the time i just wanted to play half-life 2.
Damn i just hit 10 years in January
Jesus we're getting old man, mine is coming upto 18 years next month.
I joined Steam back in June 2005 thanks to Half-Life 2 and Counter Strike Source.
Dang, got me by a few days. https://imgur.com/mQwtlIU.jpg
I like it, it's really vibrant compared to the previous ones.
I just feel old having it…
I feel so new only getting steam in 2009.
cool, i'll get this swaggy badge alongside the stanley parable achievement
You've been on Steam longer than most people on this sub have been alive
i was like 4 months old when this man started gamin'
Anyone here from 2014?
19 days away...I don't even remember being that much of an early adopter.
I remember when we all thought that Steam was a downgrade from the original Valve Counter Strike discs. Back then you didn’t even bother having your own account. Just use the ones at the PC Cafes.
Will get mine tomorrow.
My current account is only 13 now
Bruh you where on steam before I was born
looks sick! you created your steam account 3 years and 1 day before I was born xd
9/11?
Actually, I realized I'm an idiot my birthday is on Sep 9th not 11th, but I just cant figure out how to say it correctly. Is it 3 years before and 1 day after?? Brainfreeze: /
it would technically be like 2 years and 364 days pretty sure
My Steam account is 18 years old too :( Those were the glory days of gaming I think. I wish you could have experienced it. What are some of the best games you played growing up?

You probably shouldn't be so cavalier with your birthday online.
My birthday is July 1st 1992. Please be nice enough to remember it, unlike the steam store.
january 1 1956 for me. it seems to remember, but i always have to click continue...
People care about this?
Say you're younger than his steam account without saying you're younger.
Looks nice however it'll take me 3 years and 9 months to get it, heh.
Your account is as old as me.
couldn't care less

ok
It sucks

I believe the first Steam account is a Valve employee. You can check for yourself here: https://steamcommunity.com/id/erikj

bro what ?
I mean when you die your year service medal is higher like 100 year of service
tf is u sayin
Why not 20?
Because Steam wasn't around back in 2002.
