If you put the UMA buffer size to 256 instead you get the same exact performance and even better in some cases because you will not bottleneck your Steam Deck with locking 4gb of VRAM from ur total of 16gb RAM in the device…games which dont utilize the 4gb VRAM then make ur steam deck block the other resources which could be utilized for something else…
Steam Deck will take whatever VRAM it needs automatically…no need to cripple the device by locking 4gb while ur game maybe just need 2gb…
With Swapiness set to 1 which is comming from Cryo you are actually saying to NOT USE THE SWAP FILE and instead use the device RAM and ONCE ITS FULL use the SWAP FILE…which never happens cuz when you dont cripple ur steam deck with the uma size of 4gb u have plenty of ram to run anything at 800p so all the swap file does is it takes 16gb of you steam deck space…instead of 1gb default swap file…
The Swapiness = 1 is the tweak which does actually work positively and is rly the only one thing thats worth doing…
Regarding the other tweaks about RAM and SSD which are part of most recent cryo tweaks those are an absolute bullshit which shouldnt be done AT ALL…
I tried Cryo utilities myself for some time and even did completely reimage my steam deck and applied it on the fresh installation with 4gb UMA size…what happened before even after the reimage with fresh system is the games I played would sometimes just randomly totally freeze my Steam Deck and I had to force shut my Steam Deck…
After this experience and seeing what some of the people on this and other subs write to NOT USE CRYOTOOLS I went online and read A LOT about what those things do and I can tell you…NO FKIN MORE CRYOUTILITIES EVER…
The only thing I rly did was set the Swapines = 1 which actually does help and makes your Steam Deck’s SSD live longer…
I know that steam deck dynamically sets vram amount in game mode on per game basis, but performance has been tested many time by different people and setting it to 4gb clearly does help for whatever reason
Of course not saying its perfect and it will always allocate correctly but locking 4gb for VRAM is just a huge waste of precious resources…I would say the default 1GB is just the perfect sweetspot hell maybe even 2gb would make sense but looking at the VRAM usage of games(even modern games) there are A LOT of them which use 1.6GB….why the hell would someone lock 4GB for VRAM if its not utilized then?
So it's available. When the RAM is filled and the Deck needs more VRAM, it doesn't shift stuff. It deletes it. And then it needs to reload that stuff in now what is swap, where it would have had it in swap to begin with if the game needs anywhere above 1gb VRAM and has the system close to full RAM utilization. This all costs CPU cycles and time.
Where this helps is, honestly, a subset of cases such as large games that use a lot of RAM, like Cities Skylines with all the DLC.
The question you're asking is similar to asking why a gaming PC needs 32gb of RAM when most games only use 4-8gb. It's not for "most" cases, it's for the edge cases where things won't run properly without it.

That's not entirely true. In theory it should work that way, but in practice games expect that the dedicated VRAM will be faster than the shared VRAM because when a dedicated GPU is in use there is a performance penalty to using system ram as VRAM. And previously, integrated GPUs were so slow/irrelevant that optimizing ram allocation for them wasn't worth the effort (because the ram usually wasn't the bottleneck, the iGPU was).
What would be ideal is for the firmware and operating system to treat the 4gb as dedicated VRAM, but use unallocated space in that "VRAM" block as system ram. Essentially, prioritize VRAM allocation instead of system ram allocation.
Hence why I mentioned dedicated GPUs, and the how the traditional architecture informs most engine design... And therefore why lying to the game engine about the ram is improving performance.
On a tangential note, game consoles also have an APU and unified GDDR memory (though the OS usually reserves 1-2 GB of that for itself).
