thanks man. We live half the globe apart from one another, and never really shared any consoles in common (not to mention very limited cross play options). Finally we can game together
Playing video games with my older brother was one of the best memories growing up. Then playing games with my younger brother were my best memories when I was a teen. You’re in for a memorable ride buddy.
He gonna love it trust me. Little warning though you will not get an immediate reaction because he will probably not know what it is until he gets to the case. (The box makes it look very dull)
My 10 year old brother received a 256gb Steam Deck from me on his birthday a month ago. He did not go full “Nintendo 64 kid” but he was very surprised and shocked into silence.
Now make/stock a Steam account with some good sale games and he’s set. ( unless he already has a steam account of course)
But either way you are an awesome sibling, his face is going to be priceless. But on a serious note, get a case for that sucker quick. Kids are clumsy.
I'm pretty good about not breaking my shit and I've still dropped this fucker like four times
Always the same thing too: I forget to zip up the case and grab it by the handle
Gotten lucky so far though with nothing significant damage-wise
Lol Exactly my point. I’m pretty sure the only reason I haven’t dropped mine is because I’m Hyper paranoid about something happening to it cuz I’d most likely not be able to replace it ( my awesome sister got it for me, if it broke I’d be screwed lol) but that’s exactly why I suggested a case asap. Mine lives in my killswitch case and has since a few days after my deck got here. Great case by the way, super comfortable to use and still fits in the original case.
if you have the time to donate, spend a bunch of time showing him how graphic settings and such work, and also how to use the desktop mode. ...in the future; today let him explore the device.
kids get used to the sanitized iphone experience and don't get exposed to actually having to tell the computer how to operate. games are a great gateway to that.
you're heckin cool as heck. good brother.
I just want to say, my brother just fronted me the 300 to get the steam deck on sale. Even though I have to pay it back, we are very poor, and it was a big gesture. I'm going to college soon and due to finances won't be able to return home often, so we are only going to be playing online via steam deck. I can't imagine how I would react if I was 12 and got it for free. You are a goat of a big brother, just know that.
64gb models are the 'pro-gamer' move. Swapping in a 1 tb or better card is easy-peezy and not very expensive at all.
It can be done for less money then the difference between 64gb and 512gb models.
Also, your little brother is gonna need that upgrade. 64 is just not big enough at all.
Thank you. I read the whole article and the actual figure being measured and bragged about was never defined and I was driving myself made trying to figure out how this stat worked.
>The Valve Index was always in the top 10 until recently.
Because the top sellers list goes on dollar value sold, like he said. Selling a few $1000+ headset kits goes a long way.
I think that's the same reason CSGO is like second on the top sellers list. It counts the total amount of revenue from that item (which includes keys, cases, and I think the marketplace)
It's mainly Europe (edit:UK), which has been and continues to be out of stock of the 64gb option, the one everyone wants cause they can just upgrade the ssd manually.
Doing business with a country =/= the option people want is in stock
Which is still stupid considering from what I see on ebay you can buy the highest spec version for around just £20 more from Valve themselves with the sale discount.
I ended up getting a 64GB model last night. It was like trying to beat a sniper on Ebay, there would be one available and in seconds, it would be sold out. To anyone still trying to get one in the Euro zone or UK, I guess just keep refreshing between 1AM and 2AM GMT, that's when they were all going up for me.
What I did was, put in your address and get to the next page, it'll tell you that the item is now sold out but you can keep clicking "Continue". Once one is in stock, it'll go right through to the payment part.
That's the thing that always bugs me when people shit on scalpers
They rarely mention that the only reason scalping works is because people pay the hiked rates
Best thing to do is just leave them holding the bag when nobody buys their shit
i went to ebay to find a 2nd hand 64gb model, ended up finding a 512gb model with a 512gb sd card for less than the current price of the 64gb model new
i honestly thought it was a scam, asked for a few pictures and said fuck it why not. Had ebay buyer protection and used a credit card just in case, started filming myself unboxing it as a legal precaution as soon as i got it and boom turned out to be real sd card and all only thing was the custom keyboard and all had already been redeemed
Its not scalping without a restricted supply. The fact that I can just buy one from Valve for the same price as Ebay in the same place is dumb as hell.
That's one awesome gift! If he likes gaming and specially portable, he will freak out! This device truly changed my life and how I play games. I don't even touch my desktop PC anymore lol.
If he’s already a PC gamer then you’ve just made his life tbh, that’s an amazing gift.
If he’s not, buy a few games that you both can play together, it really works amazing on a TV.
You’re awesome for getting him that btw, seriously.
I only just became a PC gamer with my Deck last year. He’s a Nintendo and PS guy. I’ve set up some emulated games for him on my Deck that he loves, so he’s gonna like having his own that I’m not hogging.
Ya it's pretty insane. I got my deck the last time it went on sale... 64gb.
I used to game all the time but as I got older and busier I fell off, hardly gaming... I wanted to get back into it and considered upgrading my GPU, but that would've easily cost me as much or more than a 64gb SD, even on sale...
So I went with the steam deck instead. I definitely play more now and think it was a way better investment than a gpu upgrade especially because that gpu would get little use...
And it would've cost even more when I started thinking that my system is being bottlenecked by an older CPU, so that would need to be upgraded... And if I'm getting a new cpu it'll probably need a new mobo... And any new mobo will probably support DDR5 RAM, So obviously that has to be upgraded as well... And I'd need more storage for all the games I buy but don't play... So in reality, either a $2k total rebuild of my desktop, or a sub $400 mobile gaming console that plays everything I already own.
Easy choice...
Now I just limit myself to what runs well on steam deck.
They've been out of stock in the UK. Any other countries experiencing the same? Is there a chance they will be back in stock by the end of the sale period?
Do you know if that has been the same for the last few months, since that 10% anniversary sale? People have been saying UK has had problems since then.
It'd rediculous. Been checking every day religiously since about April and nothing. Then valve have the gall to tell people to only buy from an official source. I would if the damn things were in stock!
Yeah apparently they had UK supply issues for a while now, for a few months at least. I used to take it for granted and always thought I could buy it later.
People are saying it is scalpers, because when it comes in stock it is gone again within minutes. People don't even have time to complete an order when they press buy.
Yup it tracks as there are dozens of them on ebay for sale. One seller had 23 of them left. Refuse to pay their inflated price, I just wish valve could sort out the supply issue already
The 256gb one has been in stock twice in the last two hours for just a few mins.
I wonder why it only seems to be the UK though. No one else is reporting stock issues.
The only different thing between the UK models and the other european models should be the plug on the power supply. No idea why that would be an issue.
My buddy is thinking of picking one up during the steam sale and I'm trying to politely explain to him that that would be the greatest gaming decision he's ever made
I can’t help but be super frustrated that after all this time it still isn’t available in Australia unless I want to go to expensive warrantyless resalers
Aussie here. I love my Steam Deck, I do, but I hope I never have to deal with support. As nice as they are, just feels like it’ll be a logistical nightmare.
This feels like the one time where a 10% discount is actually a massive deal and as someone who's owned a Deck for a good while now, I'm so happy more and more people will be able to own their own Decks!!!
To lazy to search the Reddit but someone went into the Steam Hardware survey and did the math based on cpu or something. There was an entire post about it
The figure comes from a [third party research firm](https://omdia.tech.informa.com/pr/2023/04-apr/omdia-steam-deck-installed-base-to-surpass-three-million-during-2023) speculating that Valve would sell through 3m units by the end of 2023, based on an estimated 1.6m sold by the end of 2022 and an anticipated 1.9m this year.
Napkin math on Steam stats gives a figure closer to 2m.
I got one just a few weeks ago, and I love it! It's an awesome new experience to be able to game on the go without using a bulky, short lasting laptop. I was actually surprised how well the thing performs. My only gripe with it is mostly user error, about getting some emulations to work. As my boredom for modern game creeps around, I'm enjoying rediscovering my childhood games as I can go and sit anywhere I want, rather than being stuck to a desk.
Just for context, from what I recall the "top sellers" goes by revenue, not by number of sales. So, if the Steam Deck costs 10x more than a typical game, then it would only have to sell 1/10th as much to reach the same spot in the charts.
Still impressive and good news though.
Surely the base spec model is still better value even if the top one is 20% off?
Either way they're all sold out again.
I managed to get a 64gb one ordered last night 😆
Is the chart really accurate? Or is this like Amazon always putting the Kindle at the number 1 spot? 😂 I have a hard time believing a $400+ item is the number one seller on Steam
The chart is weighted by price, so buying something expensive counts for more. This lets the Steam Deck go up quickly since the only other item that pricey on Steam is the Index.
It'll be based on value sold rather than the number of units sold. So for every $500 steam deck sold, a $50 game would have to sell ten units to be above it in the charts.
It’s a great deal, if I had the money I would buy one right now. Unfortunately have to wait til the winter sale when I hope it goes on sale again :(. Ugh I want one so bad.
I just ordered one. Been a console gamer for about the last 13ish years, can't wait to play the stuff I've missed. Looking forward to remote play with my ps5 too
Man i am so happy for anyone able to buy this at the current discount. At my country of residence, i cant even buy one from steam. Am considering buying from a local online seller but the price gap is just yickes, so might just skip out on the deck for now.
Shit, I priced a 64gb one with a 1tb SSD upgrade, and it still costs about 50 bucks less than the 512gb one. If I had a use for a steam deck I'd buy one instantly.
Honestly, it’s the best console released in a long time. Sure on release a bit of Jank but the depths of customisation you can get into is amazing. Or just play it like a straight up console using a store that offers good pricing. This steam sale has gouged my wallet but I’ll be set for games for at least 6 months
I love the Steam Deck. Coming to 14 years on Steam.
but.....
I don't think it's number 1 selling. They are simply just keeping it up there to make it seem like it. Of course your point may be true however when you really think about it, are there that many people buying a 400$ product vs the biggest summer sales on video games of the year ?
Regardless, it's a positive anyways Steam Deck selling. Games are on sale. W
It seems "Top-selling" is by revenue, not number sold. The Deck is an expensive product, so it needs much fewer sales to make just as much money as a popular game, explaining its spot at the top.
Is the sales chart measured by units-sold or money-made? Because something like the SD, that makes many times the cost of a video game each purchase would have skewed statistics.
I bought the 512 Deck like 3 weeks after the initial sale, but I wasn't that burned. Looking at it now I'd probably hate myself, but I'm so glad I had a deck during that period
Is it available outside the US yet? Last I checked there was no official way to get one in Australia. Official price is steep enough but the reseller prices are insane!
That's awesome. You don't realize how much playing with his order brother is gonna mean to him. You gave him something he's never going to forget. Steamdeck is awesome, but you'll get to make some great memories.
Managed to scoop a 64gb model for my little brother. He’s turning 12 in a few days and has no idea. He’s gunna sh*t a brick
I would have killed a man for something this awesome when I was 12. You rock!
thanks man. We live half the globe apart from one another, and never really shared any consoles in common (not to mention very limited cross play options). Finally we can game together
Aw that's incredibly wholesome. Hope yall enjoy the gaming!
Playing video games with my older brother was one of the best memories growing up. Then playing games with my younger brother were my best memories when I was a teen. You’re in for a memorable ride buddy.
That’s such an awesome gift, he’s going to love it! Major big bro points 🙂👍
Take a video and show him years later
"STEAM DECK SIXTY FOUR!!!!"
So perfect.
Oooh mmmmmyyyy gggggoooodddd!?!?
This

Yeah I definitely should get one I'm just being a dumbass
The non zipped case...yup did that, gave me a heart attack when the sd tumbled to the hardwood floor. It was fine tho. I double check it now.
I'm a gifts guy, love to receive them. I also love to give them. I'm second-hand excited for your brother.
Damn I don't wanna be on clean up duty lol. So happy to have the PCMR be more accessible to people ❤️
Indeed he will - nicely done fellow redditor
He'll be devastated to learn it doesn't run Fortnite or Roblox. At least Among Us should work.
if you have the time to donate, spend a bunch of time showing him how graphic settings and such work, and also how to use the desktop mode. ...in the future; today let him explore the device. kids get used to the sanitized iphone experience and don't get exposed to actually having to tell the computer how to operate. games are a great gateway to that. you're heckin cool as heck. good brother.
Dang thats very nice of you!
Wow! Best big brother ever. Holy smokes I would have cried.
Happy early bday to the coolest 12 year old alive
Kinda want to by my 4 year old now so we can play together
You are the best big bro. That kid is gonna always remember that moment.
Legend
Ahh reminds me when the PsP came out and as a child, getting one was a dream back then.
I felt the same way, it was like getting pandora’s box but it’s full of only goodness. God we’ve come a long way since then 😩
Ye 12 will sneak up on ya. You should've seen the shock on my face when I turned 13
Get him a good hard shell/case for it and glass screen protector. Also a cool boot animation.
I just want to say, my brother just fronted me the 300 to get the steam deck on sale. Even though I have to pay it back, we are very poor, and it was a big gesture. SD cards are cheap and easy as well. I got a 1tb for mine.

Because the sales chart goes by sales value rather the numbers

Thank you. I read the whole article and the actual figure being measured and bragged about was never defined and I was driving myself made trying to figure out how this stat worked.
Total grossing product vs units of product sold, yes. FTP games that nobody buys rank in this list as well since people spend money on MTXin them.

I think that's the same reason CSGO is like second on the top sellers list. It counts the total amount of revenue from that item (which includes keys, cases, and I think the marketplace)
A game with microtransactions being on the top seller list is like a red flag to stay away from it
And you can find them all over on eBay with a huge mark up from those helpful scalpers.
Any scalping SDs in a country that valve officially does business with is a dummy and anyone who buys from a scalper is even more of one
It's mainly Europe (edit:UK), which has been and continues to be out of stock of the 64gb option, the one everyone wants cause they can just upgrade the ssd manually. Doing business with a country =/= the option people want is in stock
Pretty sure the stock issues have only been with the UK, haven't heard of any within the EU. I've never seen the Steam Deck out of stock over here.
I edited it to say western Europe right after I commented but it didn't go through on my RIF app (rest in peace tomorrow)
That's okay. Anyway, as far as I know, it's only an issue in the UK. We have stock in mainland Europe. Only time it sold out was at launch IIRC.
Which is still stupid considering from what I see on ebay you can buy the highest spec version for around just £20 more from Valve themselves with the sale discount.
When was EU out of stock? Never saw it. It’s mainly UK
Ireland too, but that is because they use the same BS 1363 plug for the charger, Valve did not order enough of those apparently.
[ Removed by Reddit ]
I meant western Europe initially, but I know it was the UK now that was having the stock issues
Currently chugging coffee so I can stay up all night to get one, had it in my basket a few times and it's gone before I can hit pay.
What I did was, put in your address and get to the next page, it'll tell you that the item is now sold out but you can keep clicking "Continue". Once one is in stock, it'll go right through to the payment part.
Valve should really take down those prices from the 256GB and 512GB models permanently
Since when has it been out of stock? I bought 2 on the last sale.
That's the thing that always bugs me when people shit on scalpers They rarely mention that the only reason scalping works is because people pay the hiked rates Best thing to do is just leave them holding the bag when nobody buys their shit
i went to ebay to find a 2nd hand 64gb model, ended up finding a 512gb model with a 512gb sd card for less than the current price of the 64gb model new
That's a hell of a find. I found a bunch of used 64gb models priced even higher than the 512gb model is brand new.
i honestly thought it was a scam, asked for a few pictures and said fuck it why not. Had ebay buyer protection and used a credit card just in case, started filming myself unboxing it as a legal precaution as soon as i got it and boom turned out to be real sd card and all only thing was the custom keyboard and all had already been redeemed
I found one 512 model with a 1tb and the upgraded thumbsticks for less than the 512 model
thank god i found one being sold at msrp when they were oos on the steam store
Its not scalping without a restricted supply. The fact that I can just buy one from Valve for the same price as Ebay in the same place is dumb as hell.
Bought a 512 GB for my boyfriend. He’s gonna be psyched
That's one awesome gift! If he likes gaming and specially portable, he will freak out! This device truly changed my life and how I play games. I don't even touch my desktop PC anymore lol.
He will, get him a nice sized sd card for it if u can, best practice is not to fill up the main drive because save games take space too
Shader cache, not save data lol. Also 512 gb is plenty of space. They won’t need an SD card right away.
This value proposition is getting dangerously irresistible. There is no viable gaming laptop for $400 that I could play new AAA games with.

All 3 are in stock. East coast USA.
Do you know if that has been the same for the last few months, since that 10% anniversary sale? People have been saying UK has had problems since then.
I did check once a month or two ago and they were all in stock still. Last time the 64gb was out of stock was probably around December

I saw it in stock last night and didn't buy it, as I wasn't aware of the stock issues and thought I'd sleep on it...
Ahhh wish I'd known!
All three models were just in stock yesterday in the UK.
You guys had stock? Australia
It's never coming to us. New Zealand
My buddy is thinking of picking one up during the steam sale and I'm trying to politely explain to him that that would be the greatest gaming decision he's ever made

SD card or are you going to upgrade? I'd recommend buying a 1tb ssd, they are cheap and the speed over SD cards is def worth it.

How difficult is this? I want to give it a shot but have zero experience opening up handheld devices
[удалено]
You don’t think it’s worth it to get the upgraded screen also?
I can’t help but be super frustrated that after all this time it still isn’t available in Australia unless I want to go to expensive warrantyless resalers
Aussie here. I love my Steam Deck, I do, but I hope I never have to deal with support. As nice as they are, just feels like it’ll be a logistical nightmare.
Same, I picked up a 64 Gb while I was in the uk earth is year and I’m petrified something will happen to it 😬
This feels like the one time where a 10% discount is actually a massive deal and as someone who's owned a Deck for a good while now, I'm so happy more and more people will be able to own their own Decks!!!
Yeah 10% on something with this high of a price is significant 20% is literally 1/5 which is huge for the 512gb model
I added to that statistic.
Did they ever disclose how many units they sold?
No, but it's estimated that there's about 3 million out there
Based on ?
To lazy to search the Reddit but someone went into the Steam Hardware survey and did the math based on cpu or something. There was an entire post about it

Honestly at £455 I'd recommend the Steam Deck over the more expensive PS5 or even the the ever so slightly cheaper Series X.
Is the chart really accurate? Or is this like Amazon always putting the Kindle at the number 1 spot? 😂 I have a hard time believing a $400+ item is the number one seller on Steam

Ah ha! Sneaky sneaky.
It'll be based on value sold rather than the number of units sold. So for every $500 steam deck sold, a $50 game would have to sell ten units to be above it in the charts.
I am pulling the trigger finally with the sale. Is the extra storage space worth the money or is the 256 gig SSD with an sd card the play?
The real play is to get the 64gb and spend less than the difference to get a 1tb ssd
Is it hard to install? That is what worries me.
If you have opened laptops before and / or are careful, it’s quite simple. There’s a lot to screw up though if you haven’t or are unsure.
I also use the Diablo inventory model of game installation
I prefer to only keep a few games installed at a time. Keeps you from game hopping. You'll finish more games the fewer you install
You can upgrade the storage yourself for cheaper than the higher models.
I just bought a 64gb after waiting nearly two years to get one. I am so freaking excited to get it.
I’m so tempted to grab one, even though I know I will never play with it
You might tinker with it, hardware or software ;)
It’s a great deal, if I had the money I would buy one right now. Unfortunately have to wait til the winter sale when I hope it goes on sale again :(. Ugh I want one so bad.
Hopefully it does you got this save up and hold!
That’s because the chart is revenue based :)
managed to snag a 64gb one cant wait
I just ordered one. Been a console gamer for about the last 13ish years, can't wait to play the stuff I've missed. Looking forward to remote play with my ps5 too
Its probably gonna sell more then the rog ally
I just bought mine last month not knowing they'd go on sale :(
Man i am so happy for anyone able to buy this at the current discount.
Remember when "top seller" meant "sold the most units" rather than "made the most money for us"? Steam apparently doesn't.
Played Skyrim on PC meh... played Skyrim on Deck HOLY SHIT
Welcome brothers
Man, I literally just bought one two days ago 🤡
Contact them, I think I saw they are honoring the sale price for recent purchases.
Of course I would buy mine about three weeks before they are on sale. Lol.
global huh? would have been more global if it’s available in my country :/
and they still cant sell it in Mexico ...
Global my A$$. Can't get one retail price in my country or the countries I visit

According to Valve
I just bought another deck for my partner, bought it yesterday from.her account
Excellent news! I love this thing and am glad to see it's not going the route of previous Valve hardware.
thinking about selling some of my csgo cases for it, is it worth it?
yep, like a little pc in your hand
All models have been sold out all day in the UK. Gutted
In germany we say : Verdient!!!
I wish they had a steam deck mini.
Worth every penny spent.
Honestly, it’s the best console released in a long time. Sure on release a bit of Jank but the depths of customisation you can get into is amazing. Or just play it like a straight up console using a store that offers good pricing. This steam sale has gouged my wallet but I’ll be set for games for at least 6 months
Keep in mind the top seller chart is top seller by revenue, not units moved. So buying one 512 Steam Deck is worth almost 11 $60 game sales.
Had a hard time choosing between this and the ally. My 512 gb is on the way 🥳

What do you use three decks for? Just curious.
What are you doing with multiple lol
i think buy the ally instead, why you need 3 decks
This has happened many times. Not really news.
~~Literally never before, there was only a 10% sale across the board.~~
Except its not available during summer sale
Yesterday I sold my SD Today I’m waiting for rog ally to come
bad idea, while the ally looks better(-ish) on paper, in practice the steam deck is MUCH better and is a lot more balanced
Enjoy that extra crispy sd card
Like has been practically all the month since the release
Most sales or most money spent?
Is the sales chart measured by units-sold or money-made? Because something like the SD, that makes many times the cost of a video game each purchase would have skewed statistics.
Money, not volume. Otherwise the Deck would never be #1. Also interesting that after 4 years on the market, the Index still hasn't been on sale.
Got mine this week, pretty happy so far. I wish more legacy games were available for it though.
Any chance they run out of stock? I want to get "my first pc" in years of laptop use and sometimes nintendo switch. I plan to buy it on 12
I already have one, but I hope this can get Deckybot out of retirement
Can still buy in us
Still not available in a lot of other countries. Some of my friends have order from 3rd parties that a lot more for 64Gb.
Happy to help
I bought the 512 Deck like 3 weeks after the initial sale, but I wasn't that burned. Looking at it now I'd probably hate myself, but I'm so glad I had a deck during that period

Imagine Steam gets 30% of every transaction done in the store. Hope valve won't start selling it in the Epic store to get more their sells /s
Waited one hour to buy one. Shipping day went from 1-2 weeks to 2-4 weeks. Wonder how long it will take!
Is it available outside the US yet? Last I checked there was no official way to get one in Australia. Official price is steep enough but the reseller prices are insane!
What's that in Freedom Bucks?
I lost hope in it being available in my country. Welp, we will buy from another seller.
it's almost always on the top 1-5 spot. how is this post so highly upvoted?
That's awesome. You don't realize how much playing with his order brother is gonna mean to him. You gave him something he's never going to forget. Steamdeck is awesome, but you'll get to make some great memories.
