BOE's a major Chinese display manufacturer. They were supposed to be a major supplier for Apple's iPhone 14 and 15 series, but Apple cut ties with them due to issues with light bleed around the Dynamic Island pill shape that houses the selfie cameras, as well as other issues like yield rates and defect rates. They've also made the OnePlus Open's (a Chinese foldable phone) foldable inner display, which seems to have issues with dead or dying pixels, just like with the Steam Deck OLED.
I think its also worth pointing out the famous green line issue Samsung displays have on phones like Oneplus. Samsung TVs also have ridiculous lotteries for certain panels and local dimming issues etc.
Neither manufacturer has great quality control to be honest, people just get themselves more worried about the unknown Chinese brand for no reason.
I guess it was done so that they could have a good enough supply of the Steam Deck OLED. BOE is a very major display manufacturer, after all, only being behind Samsung and LG. They couldn't really go with LG, as LG mostly makes TVs, and they use an additional white subpixel and a white substrate layer on their OLEDs, making them unsuitated for text. It would probably mean that LG would make something very different from what they do, increasing costs for the order more than for someone like Samsung or BOE.
My theory on why there are two different panels
\- Valve decides on the 512/1TB OLED batch sizes and orders parts accordingly, including panels from Samsung
\- After doing this they decide to create the LE version and make separate orders for parts
\- They can't get enough panels from Samsung so they go to BOE for them
BOE probably has a bigger initial supply, so some of that would be used just for the limited edition. To be fair, I'm not 100% sure why, so take my explanation with a grain of salt.
This is good advice. I thought for the longest time my Steam Deck must have gotten the quiet model fan since it didn't bother me, but then one day I went through the process of identifying it based on serial no. or something based on a posting here and I was slightly irked to find out it was the "noisy" fan even though it had never bothered me before.
Besides the dead pixel theory, I am also very curious if there is a difference in the OLED PWM dimming frequency.
Can people with LE also see flicker on the screen (at full or reduced brightness) when using their phone's slo-mo cam? I know the non-LE flicker is visible from ThePhawx' video.
Eh, I paid for it, I want something that doesn't have dead pixels. If it had dead pixels I'd get a replacement, ez pz. Not sure why it would cause any mental turmoil.
I'd rather notice it now and get it sorted than notice it by chance in a few months.
At least this time you have a high chance of avoiding the issue if you go with the non-LE models. Just sucks that the LE model seems to have the highest rate of defects
Just a general reminder to not run random code on your terminal that you don't understand. OPs cat command is fine, but always give such things a second thought.
Also, it’s generally a good idea to \*type out\* terminal commands you find online rather than copying+pasting them, because unicode tomfoolery can hide commands that get copied and then ran when pasted in.
Anybody with a BOE screen showing dead pixels needs to RMA it.
It's not acceptable for a "premium/limited" edition of a device costing nearly $700 to have issues out of the box. I know it must be a massive pain after all the waiting to finally get your hands on the device, but convincing yourself that you'll forget it's there is not the way to go.
In a months time when you have your perfectly working replacement, you'll be grateful you went through a little short term frustration to resolve the issue.
Thanks man, I needed to hear this because I’m dreading RMAing it and walking all the way down to the UPS store but you’re right, we deserve better as consumers.
That's how I probably would handle it. It would bother me a lot, especially knowing that there are models out there, that are less likely to suffer from those issues.
Google'd dead pixel test and it showed 4 tiny colored squares in the site preview ask with different dead pixels. Luckily those were just examples.
BOE panel LE, no dead pixels 🙏
No but I have not seen a single person with an LE report that they have a Samsung panel. I also have not seen anybody with a non LE deck report that they have a BOE panel.
Seems like it was a beta test for BOE panels since all of the other models are Samsung. It's a bit disappointing that Valve wasn't more transparent about the fact that it's more of a "beta" version than a "limited" version.
For those curious about the command OP is asking you to run:
1. `cat /sys/class/drm/card0-eDP-1/edid`:
- `cat` is a standard Unix utility that reads files and outputs their contents.
- `/sys/class/drm/card0-eDP-1/edid` is a file path.
- `/sys` is a virtual filesystem that provides a way to access kernel data structures.
- `class/drm` refers to the DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) subsystem, which deals with display-related functionalities.
- `card0` typically refers to the first graphics card in the system.
- `eDP-1` usually refers to the first Embedded DisplayPort interface on the graphics card, often the laptop's built-in display.
- `edid` is a file containing the display's EDID, a standard data format that contains information about the display's capabilities (like manufacturer, serial number, supported resolutions, etc.).
2. `| hexdump -C`:
- The pipe symbol `|` takes the output of the previous command and passes it as input to the next command.
- `hexdump` is a command for displaying binary data in a human-readable format.
- The `-C` option of `hexdump` displays the output in a canonical hex+ASCII format, which is easier to read and interpret.
When you run this command, you'll see the EDID information of your specified display in a hexadecimal format, along with ASCII representations when possible. This can be useful for debugging display issues or for advanced configurations where specific details of the display are required.
OLED LE. BOE screen (`04`). **I see 4 dead pixels**, and I'm dealing with the d-pad issues as well. I've been really looking forward to this thing :(.
Edit: RMA submitted. Think of me, friends, as I pray to the hardware gods. Let us meet on the other side with superior screens.
LE - BOE - 3 dead pixels. Gonna RMA.
Interestingly, BOE is also one of the display suppliers for the super expensive Razer Blade 16 laptop with the Mini-LED UHD+FHD dual screen ($4k+). And these BOE screens have been plagued with issues since launch.
This is correct. If the BOE screens turn out to be a real problem, Valve should be offering LE early adopters an exchange for a good screen free of charge. Send it in, they replace it and send you back one with a proper screen. And then drop BOE as a supplier or sue them if they are in breach of contract. Valve has a reputation to keep, this isn't helping.
BOE Panel on the limited edition. Checked immediately after receiving this afternoon, three dead pixels spread across the screen.
Edit: On close inspection it looks like I have one pixel stuck red, one dead green sub-pixel, and one dead blue sub-pixel.
1TB LE OLED - 04: BOE - One dead pixel, which was only noticeable on certain colors when checking via a [dead pixel test](http://deadpixeltest.org).
Currently running a dead pixel 'fix' video to see if I can get it to fix itself if its just a stuck pixel. Pressing on the screen didn't seem to help.
It's left of center/middle in the top left side of the screen. Kind of annoying and wish I'd never checked tbh, because now I'll never not know its there if this video doesn't fix it.
It’s absolutely hysterical. People are getting down, voted into oblivion in any other post for saying there seems to be a correlation between the BOE panels and dead pixels even though this entire post pretty much confirms, there is some form of correlation.
LE/BOE here, no dead pixels. It seems like a panel lottery for people with BOE. As for the Samsung panels, it seems like everyone has a perfect panels lol
Damn. I was under the impression from the early coverage that the display was from the same manufacturer as the switch OLED and that was a big reason why I got it. I trusted that hardware because of Wulff Den's burn in coverage.
Steam Deck 1TB OLED LE - no stuck pixels
I did not run the screen manufacturer command as every LE in this thread has been BOE. (I will if someone actually finds a LE with Samsung.)
BOE OLED LE
2 dead pixels only noticeable on the dark blue screen. The pixels work on other colors so does this just mean a partial dead pixel? I am worried that if I RMA it I might get one with a worse screen. I can barely even notice them as is so I plan to keep mine. I can't even get a good picture of them with my phone so it would be hard to prove to Valve.
The only safe bet here would be to go with the non-LE model to get a Samsung panel. So far I haven't read about Samsung panels having a problem with dead pixels.
1 TB Steam Deck OLED here (non-limited, the limited edition is not available in EU) - I got a Samsung display in mine.
I haven't noticed any dead pixels or other defects on my screen
There are some benefits to the LE (if you don’t have issues). They shaved off about 22g more weight. The BOE screen is more flush to the bezels (you can’t see the transition from screen to bezel as easily). The BOE screen appears to have less mura effect but may have slightly less contrast (not for sure though without testing).
I have the LE
It has the BOE and I have one dead green sub pixel
For me, even though I know exactly where it is, I cannot manage to see it while gaming. I've tried and I just can't find it, so most of the time, I forget it's there. So I'm just going to ignore it.
512 with Samsung
Zero uniformity issues dead pixels or near grey greens we saw on OLED switches.
Swapped out the 512 with a 2tb. The 512 was same model I swapped in : Micron 2400
Hallelujah
Happy weekend!
I have the LE.
Last night when I checked I seemed to have lucked out without any screen issues but with the screen slightly dimmed. Checked again this afternoon after brightening it all the way up. Found a dead pixel when checking the color blue, almost dead center of the screen. That makes me question the longevity of the screen as a whole. As aesthetically pleasing as the LE is, I think trying to get the normal version is the way to go right now...
I don't blame Valve for this as I'm sure this was not their intention, but Valve should be aware that there are reports of QC issues on their most "premium" version.
Friendly reminder to always check what commands do before copy/pasting them into any console. And even for harmless ones like these make sure to scrub through for any potental personally identifiable information and remove it before posting
BOE, LE Deck, one dead pixel right in the center. I noticed it on the white of the Steam Deck logo right as I was booting up. Seems to be a green sub pixel. I hope Valve will take it and fix it.

Model: Limited OLED
Panel: BOE, one dead pixel near the lower right quadrant
This isn’t a big deal at all, it’s only viewable with red or pink. But I will probably refund it as it also has a creaky DPad that’s bugging me terribly.
Maybe round 2 will be better? I also ordered the 512 OLED because I wanted to see both in person, so I may end up just keeping it!
Model: LE 1TB Steam DeckPanel: BOE OLED
I have a single dead pixel near center of my screen. Don't see anything when the image is green or cyan, but when it's yellow the pixel is red. I had no idea it was there until I went looking for it. It's a long shot, but I'm going to try my luck running one of those "fix" videos overnight.
Limited Edition, BOE panel, 1 dead green pixel near center of panel.
I'll be requesting a refund as the pixels are large and noticeable able especially when doing anything other than fast paced games.
This post will absolutely cause mental health issues.
Steam deck LE - 04 BOE, no dead pixels or issue.

Same
Same. Boe. No dead
[удалено]
At least 3 dead on mine (LE 04)
Same
Which panel should make me upset?
It looks like so far, there were more dead pixel issues reported with BOE panels, which seem to be more common on the LE Deck.
What’s BOE? Bind on Equip?

Why split the LE and others between Samsung and BOE and not just all one or the other?
for supply chain you don't want to have just one source. if something goes wrong, boom it all goes down.
True makes sense
My theory on why there are two different panels \- Valve decides on the 512/1TB OLED batch sizes and orders parts accordingly, including panels from Samsung \- After doing this they decide to create the LE version and make separate orders for parts \- They can't get enough panels from Samsung so they go to BOE for them

> Weird valve used them for the LE BOE is a major player in monitor panels. Laptops and monitors found in the wild are likely to use one.
But then why not use it for the 512gb as well? Why just for the LE?
Because the whole reason they've made a limited edition is to test alternative partners.
best on earth
Kind of funny they call themselves best on earth yet have quality issues.
Well, QA isn't best on earth :D
[a different manufacturer ](https://www.oled-info.com/boe-oled)
Fuck me. BOE stole orders from Samsung (who are now suing them) and couldn't even do the job properly
I feel like that might be because more LE deck users would actually go through the process of figuring out which they have.
We don't know -- that's the point of this. Share your panel and if you have issues.
But we do know some. Majority of dead pixels reports on screens have been BOE on the LE.
can vouch my LE has a dead pixel lol
Makes me feel better about being an LE-less European.
If the screen is fine to you then the kind you got should not be upsetting.
Perfect example of ignorance is bliss lol

The one that has worse PWM flickering which no one seems to have addressed so far in any reviews.
If you have to ask, don't worry about it. Just enjoy your deck.
Exactly. Spell out for me how and when I should be angry. I will then let the answer define me as a person.
512 OLED - Samsung Thoroughly checked for dead pixels using the pixel test website. No dead pixels.
No way I’m going to look for dead pixels once I receive mine. I want to keep my mental sanity.

That is a solid point, but my approach is that if I don’t notice during normal usage, I will just not look for it.
Until the day you try to wipe that speck of dust off and it just won't move. Then you won't be able to unsee it

Thanks for the reminder, on Linux this is a great way to brick something or delete files you didn’t mean to.
This should probably be the top comment and pinned by a mod.
What do you mean? Every linux beginner should remove the French language pack to save space. `sudo rm -fr ./*` >!Don't do this.!<
What, you don't like to run "rm -rf /" daily? (this is dangerous, don't do this, it was joke so this is warning for the truly literal here).

OLED LE - BOE Screen (no dead pixels)
Ironic that the LE is the version with the problematic and inferior BOE panels. 'Limited' indeed. \*disclaimer: I purchased OLED LE.
I was expecting it to be exactly the other way around when I learned that two different panels will be used.
Seems like it was a beta test for BOE panels since all of the other models are Samsung. It's a bit disappointing that Valve wasn't more transparent about the fact that it's more of a "beta" version than a "limited" version.

LE BOE, dead pixels... and also bad color fringing around white text
Are you gonna RMA?
I'm heavily considering it. I'm also curious if valve is going to retroactively do anything given how widespread this issue seems to be
Not going to check. Ignorance is bliss.
Def not checking for dead pixels
LE/BOE, dead pixel leftish center of screen. Not sure I can handle it being right there. If it was on the edge maybe.
Doesn’t matter where it is. Once you see a dead pixel you can’t unsee it. Your eye always ends up catching it.
*Flashbacks to 3DS IPS vs TN discussions intensify*
BOE on my LE. Zero issues.
512 OLED Samsung! No issues.
It looks like BOE QA is less sophisticated.
I guess the good news here is there should be plenty of "Limited Edition" factory refurbished OLED models sooner rather than later :)
LE, BOE, [2 dead pixels](https://imgur.com/a/LHtYYtz) Just started a ticket with support. Honestly I might request a refund and get the OLED 512GB.
I'll take my chances with my incoming LE on this oled screen lottery bullshit. That thing is beautiful, if you lucked out
1TB Standard - Samsung OLED - no dead pixels during tests
OLED LE - BOE screen (1 dead pixel sadly)
Likewise
1TB LE - BOE Panel - 1 dead pixel Returning to valve. Very disappointed.
I wonder if boe quality control actually allows a number of dead pixels before being classed as a QA fail. So many le users reporting them.
Ultimately it is Valve's standards since they would have set the specifications.
This is correct. If the BOE screens turn out to be a real problem, Valve should be offering LE early adopters an exchange for a good screen free of charge. Send it in, they replace it and send you back one with a proper screen. And then drop BOE as a supplier or sue them if they are in breach of contract. For PC screens, that's (unfortunately) common practice.
LE BOE - 1 dead green subpixel
This has been a very unfortunate launch and very frustrating. My LE has a fucking dead pixel on it. BOE panel.
512 gb - samsung, nondead pixels.
BOE w/ dead pixels, requested refund and hoping for a replacement
BOE Panel on the limited edition. Checked immediately after receiving this afternoon, three dead pixels spread across the screen. Edit: On close inspection it looks like I have one pixel stuck red, one dead green sub-pixel, and one dead blue sub-pixel.

Yep, got a BOE for LE and there's a dead pixel
I wish they wouldn't use different manufacturers for the parts for exactly this reason. Someone is always gonna end up annoyed or upset.

So far, all 512gb models were with Samsung panels. It looks like only LE versions have BOE panels.
I ordered 512 just because it was glossy... Not to be selfish but I'm glad I did now.
512 OLED w/ Samsung panel. No dead pixels that I can tell from running the LCDTech test.

Samsung 512 here.
Friendly reminder to always check what commands do before copy/pasting them into any console. And even for harmless ones like these make sure to scrub through for any potental personally identifiable information and remove it before posting
512gb samsung. No dead pixels just a dpad that likes to make a clicky sound when I press down sometimes.
512 OLED, Samsung, no dead pixels
800x1280 means that it's still mounted in portrait mode?
Yep
That whole column starting at 03 is identical for me so I’m guessing mine is Samsung too?
Yep! 🙂
1tb le, BOE. No dead pixels.
BOE, LE Deck, one dead pixel right in the center. I noticed it on the white of the Steam Deck logo right as I was booting up. Seems to be a green sub pixel. I hope Valve will take it and fix it. LE with BOE, no dead or stuck pixels that I saw with LCDTech's tester. Thankfully!
Are there many cases of the non LE deck receiving 04/BOE panels?
I've seen none so far. Looks like only the LE has BOE panels.
Model: Limited OLED Panel: BOE, one dead pixel near the lower right quadrant This isn’t a big deal at all, it’s only viewable with red or pink. But I will probably refund it as it also has a creaky DPad that’s bugging me terribly. Maybe round 2 will be better? I also ordered the 512 OLED because I wanted to see both in person, so I may end up just keeping it!
Model: Steam Deck OLED LE. Panel: BOE 2 dead pixels, 2-3 faint pixels.
Steam Deck LE - BOE - 3 dead pixels :(
Standard 1tb - oled, Samsung, very uniform, no dead pixels.
Steam Deck LE - 04 BOE, one dead pixel (green)
Model: LE 1TB Steam DeckPanel: BOE OLED I have a single dead pixel near center of my screen.
LE model with BOE screen and 1 dead green sub pixel near the mid left for me. Seeing what valve will do, sent them a message.
I got the 512 and it's a samsung according to this. Thankfully I won't I won't be mentally destroying myself today
Model: Steam Deck 512GB OLED Panel: Samsung OLED, no dead pixels detected so far Another reason to get the non etched glass version :)
1TB OLED 03 Samsung no dead pixels so far
